The Best of Baja in the heart of Newport, SOL Cocina offers an upscale, yet inviting dining experience on the water in Newport Harbor. Executive Chef Deborah Schneider, a 2009 James Beard Foundation Book Award Nominee, has created a menu of contemporary and gourmet interpretations of Baja street cuisine,

"Great bay view and started off nice. Server seemed happy and energetic and from there went down hill. He took drink order and 15 min later came back and asked us what we would like?? So we ordered drinks and appetizer and he took our food order. 15 minutes later our drink order and entree came. No appetizer. We asked about it when he finally came back and he said he forgot and would be right back we asked him to cancel and he seemed surprised. REALLY??? we were done eating! We quickly paid and left. This is a place for bar people and large groups. That seems to be their money maker and it showed. The fool was flavorless. and very American Mexican fair. :("

"SOL is our favorite restaurant in Orange County. Any time we are in the area, we make sure to eat there at least twice!!! We're so excited that a new location has opened in Arizona, and will be frequenting that location on our yearly trips to the area. "It was my first time at SOL, though I had heard some positive reviews before I dined here. I took some very foodie friends who were visiting from Bermuda. We all love Mexican food and really were hungry. We absolutely LOVED this restaurant!! The food was so tasty -- definitely made of all fresh ingredients and with the best blend of spices. We shared a flight of street tacos and really savored the chicken mole entree. Even the rice and beans tasted special. The margaritas were made of fresh lime juice and that made all the difference. It was also an electric atmosphere with lots of buzz and attentive service. But it was also down-to-earth with views of both boats and water. I can't wait to go back again. You can bet it WILL be soon!"

"Five family members attended to celebrate my wife's birthday. We enjoyed the location, the food, and the view. Enjoyed everything in fact except the energy level of the server. Great guy, very competent and knowledgeable about the food items. However, we were there to slow down, relax, and enjoy some family time. He on the other hand was operating at a much faster speed. Has us looking at each other when he left our table and wondering what was so urgent. I'll chalk this up to just being "one of those days" for the server. We'll definitely be back, and I have already recommended the restaurant to friends."

"Loved this restaurant even though we had a rocky start. We had made reservations through OT and had requested a window sear for our anniversary. We were seated right away but at a bar table that happened to be outside. When we explained that we did not want to sit on stools next to the bar, the young woman clearly had no idea what to do even though there were empty tables that would have met our request. We were finally seated and the rest of the evening was great: wonderful server (Tony), great food options (the chicken and cheese enchiladas were a riff on enchiladas suisa and were delicious, my strawberry basil martini was amazing, the dinner salad was great and the comp dessert of sweet chips with chocolate and whipped cream was divine."

"Fabulous street tacos with many different margaritas!!! We had a great tableontheporch to watch the sunset for happy hour and then swung right into dinner. We had a sleepy four year old who had a lovely nap on tow chairs and woke up to find a delicious quesadilla. We were celebrating n engagement, taking the bar, grandparents visiting from the East Coast.. Motley but cheery crew all of whom are foodies. "Loved every minute of our brunch here. We both had perfect bloody marys in tall glasses with extra kick. I loved the huevos rancheros with carne asada and my dining companion finished up the shrimp and crab cake benedict with rave reviews as well. The homemade tortillas and homemade salsas (with salt and lime on the side to use your taste) were tasty and hard to resist. Our waiter was a true gem. Loved his personality and attention to everything we needed. Marina view and open kitchen ambiance as well as hand made ceramic plates and dishes added another element of style and ambiance. Would go back for an early brunch in a heart beat and hope we get to try for dinner soon too!"

"We dined during Newport Restaurant Week at Sol Cocina. The menu choices were good as was the food. The service was excellent. The atmosphere, however, is way too noisy to enjoy conversation with the meal. Noise from the large bar area is overwhelming. Perhaps, something can be done to close off this area from the main dining room."
