Halyards
Halyards on St. Simons has been redefining Island Cuisine for 11 popular years. The Island's unrivaled see-and-be-seen dinner spot for locals who know and for coastal visitors who've heard that the Seared Tuna with a Plum Wine Reduction and the Prime N.Y. Strip with Soy Lime Butter will make your evening. That's not to say you should skip the Creamy Blue Crab Bisque or the nightly specials. The atmosphere is casually elegant(coozy lounge furniture in the courtyard and under the awning), the welcome warm (usually by name), the service crisp and attentive, the wine cellar vast (7 Wine Spectator Awards) and the comfortable bar hip and hopping. The menu is the brilliant handiwork of Chef/Owner Dave Snyder that changes seasonally and is bold, creative and gloriously rewarding. To be sure you're pleased, Dave roams the front of the house for comments when he's not out fishing for your dinner. As you would expect at a restaurant of Halyards' caliber, reservations are a good idea.

"We made our reservations on line. Which was great. However, we wanted a 7 30 sitting. The only availability according to the site was 5 30, 6'30 an .8 30. We choose 6 30. We arrived right on time and was sat promptly. The place was not crowded at all. Only us two an maybe 2 more couples. The closer it got to 7 30 the less people. With all this said....I'm just wondering if we had called would there have been a 7 30 sitting. It was no big deal...we still enjoyed our meal and we will visit again. You just may want to check your web site. Could be you may be loosing customers."

"The food was very good and they give you plenty! The service was very fast and friendly. I really liked the environment, but it was very loud. There was a large group sitting behind us and they were all trying to talk over each other! Decent wine selection. We were celebrating our anniversary and we received a beautifully decorated dessert. Nice place, recommend it."

"I'm not a food critic, but I know a top-notch restaurant when I eat at one. Chef Dave's meals are both creative and mouth-watering. The service was impeccable and above all else my wife was happy with the evening. I couldn't have asked for a better meal."

"We went to Halyards this weekend to celebrate our 39th anniversary. Of all the places on St. Simons, we feel we will never be disappointed with the food or service at Halyards. We had briefly flirted with the idea of making reservations at another local place that touts an ocean view, but in the end, decided to go with what we KNEW would be great. Oysters Rockefeller, and two different fish dishes were chosen along with cocktails. The place was packed, but the servers and rest of the staff worked so well together that we never felt neglected even though our waitress was forced to spend quite some time with another party that brought their own fancy wine to decant and yap about."

"This was our first time dining at Halyard's and we had a great meal here. The food was delicious and the staff was attentive but not overbearing. Our fish was cooked to perfection and the side dishes we ordered(boiled peanut succotash and grits) and banana cake dessert were fantastic! Woud definitely dine here again!"

"First time visit to Halyards to celebrate an anniversary. Best " higher end" restaurant we've found in the area. Food, service and ambience were all excellent. Waitress was attentive but not obtrusive. We both had one of the specials which was a grilled fish fillet served on a bed of Gorgonzola grits and perfectly al dente green beans. The ingredients worked together perfectly. Definitely will pay a return visit."

"We were so pleasantly surprised by the quality of Halyards cuisine. The menu is not extensive but everyone in our group of six thought their dinner was either excellent off superb. New sampled many different dishes from the catch og the day and my flounder on a light garlic sauce was to die for. Only thing I would ding them for we're the desserts -nothing special so I saved the calories."

"While the food and service were excellent as always, we were disappointed to find waiters in casual dress which seems to be prompting patrons to follow suit. We've always thought of Halyard's as a special place to dine and feel the new "ambiance" doesn't fit with the lovely surrounding décor. We do appreciate the small plate items and the reasonable portions on the larger meals - a real plus in our book."

"Our favorite restaurant on St Simons Island where we spend the winter. We have been twice this week and will go more before we go home for the summer. Be sure and try the pot stickers along with th catch simply but perfectly prepared in Georgia Olive Oil and herbs. Then save room for the Grand Marnier White Chocolate Lava Cake.. There is a private dining room where seven of us had a superb Valentine's Day Meal. The side dishes are even superbly welll done."

"Excellent food! I had the filet of flounder special and it was beautifully prepared and luscious. The appetizer salad was also delicious. Everyone in our group was pleased with their food. Usually when the four of us go out, at least two of us bring home food for another meal. But not at Halyards. We all practically licked our plates clean. This restaurant is a real find -- especially for people who like the best in fresh seafood."

"The Kale Caesar Salad was local, tender and delicious...a culinary marvel. The ambiance was comfortable and inviting with excellent service. Since my father was a chef, I especially enjoyed meeting the warm and welcoming chef/owner Dave Snyder. The only let down was the bland calamari. It was fresh & tender without being greasy, but the coating & dipping sauce were both unremarkable. Adding the occasional jalapeno didn't really help alleviate the blandness since my husband will not eat them."

"This is a very good restaurant. Overall the food and service are both good. I think this is one of the better nice restaurants on the island. The Tuna Tartar and the short rib egg rolls are fabulous!"

"We went there for our 20th wedding anniversary and requested a special table. Well, we got it, along with some special treatment. The waiter was friendly and informative. The clam chowder was scrumptious and the pork special was to die for. I liked how they informed you of the prices of the specials, since nobody wants a financial surprise when they get the check! We felt Halyards had great pricing for their wonderful food. After getting several recommendations to go there, we were very glad that we did. It is obvious that Halyards is clearly an island favorite. The icing on the cake was the fabulous dessert with Happy 20th Anniversary written in chocolate on the plate!"

"We visit Halyards whenever we are in SSI. This trip, we introduced friends to the restaurant and they enjoyed it as much as we did. Thanks to Chef Dave for stopping by our table. That was special. We will be back!
The food was wonderful. My wife had the crab caked and called it the best in the world! We enjoyed two bottles of good wine with our meal. Our server was very friendless and attentive. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience."

"My wife and I choose Halyards for our Valentines evening dinner. Chief Dave had catered our 60 person wedding reception at the restaurant and it was wonderful so I thought returning would be a romantic treat. It surely was!
We had a crusted snapper and shrimp and grits. I can honestly say that the fish was the best that I've ever eaten and, while I didn't get a bite, the plate was cleaned next to me. :) Halyards has a four page wine list that will please most anyone, the servers are quite friendly and professional and even though in a busy area, the valet parking solves any issues with finding a spot.
I can recommend Halyards without reservation!"

"As a corporate meeting planner, excellent service along with excellent food quality are of utmost importance. Our group was seated promptly...we had a specialized menu printed for our group. Appetizers came out right away - every single entrée was delicious. Overall it was fantastic. Would highly recommend this restaurant for any groups or individuals visiting The Cloister or The Lodge at Sea Island. Great experience."

"Hit and miss. 4 of us went for dinner. Salads were good, although dressing on mine could have used a little more tang. Stir fry and trigger fish dishes that our friends ordered were good. My tuna tartare was good but the potstickers were doughy. My husband's cheeseburger came overcooked (he likes it pink in the middle; server did not ask how he would like it and he failed to tell her). The restaurant manager offered to get him another burger but he refused and ate the burger anyway."
