The Copper Onion is one of the new additions to the growing Utah foodie scene. Former NYC chef (and native Utahan) Ryan Lowder now brings his personal take on New American cuisine to his own kitchen with an approach inspired by his passion for Utah’s outstanding farmstead ingredients and his experience as a chef cooking his way through Barcelona, NYC and South America. The Copper Onion serves a wide array of vegetable side dishes and a menu designed to explore and share, with plates such as Ricotta dumplings with lemon, sage and brown butter and Braised Pork Belly with shaved Brussels sprouts and pickled celeriac. Entrees include Fresh house-made papparedelle with lamb ragout and Duck Confit with butternut squash and roasted mushroom caps. An insistent focus on the freshest and best is paramount; sausages and burgers are ground daily, bread is baked and ice cream is made in house, offering casual diners an exceptional experience at affordable prices.
"I had heard about this place on the local news, and had read about it in the Trib and in the SLC magazine. We were able to get in on Saturday night. Tiny wood chair made for eating quickly and getting out; like you'd find in a deli. The food was good (I had the fried goat cheese salad and meatloaf, my husband the salmon). I didn't like the bread, and it was a miniscule amount served in a tiny metal pail (?). It was really crowded, so obviously it's doing well. We like to support neighborhood restaurants and avoid the chains whenever possible. I would compare this place to ZY - which has a better wine list and better food, but for some reason is less known. Basically no real complaints, just not what we expected based on all the hoop-la."

"Once again, we had an incredible meal at Copper Onion. From the bone marrow, and salads, to the halibut, strip steak and pork chop...not a complaint was heard. Everyone loved the flavors!"

"Second visit to the Copper Onion - the menu was very fresh and featured local meats and cheese. I ordered the steak (medium rare) and it came out on the medium well end. The steak was definitely a larger serving size versus the trout filet, which two of my coworkers ordered. They had room for dessert though. Overall, lovely dining experience. The outside seating looked to be great if the weather was fitting. Definitely recommend for a nice dinner in SLC."

"Excellent place for Sunday brunch. this place was highly recommended by several locals. I had the huevos rancheros--it was amazing. Nice portion-size, delicious. Definitely recommend getting reservations because this place is very popular."

"My wife and I were a bit disappointed. The food was generally good except her salad was overly salty. Mine was great, outstanding really. So good I recreated it the following evening at home. I am a CIA trained chef. The mussel dish with toast points is usually really good but mine was unpleasantly gritty this time. But my beef really isn't with the food. When I pay for a nice dining experience I expect nice surroundings. This space is uncomfortable both from an intimacy standpoint and just plain physically uncomfortable. The chairs are awful, tables small. Looking around, I saw no really "good" table where I would rather sit. I felt too crowded to be at one of SLC's top restaurants which is the billing Copper Onion receives."

"This was a fun place - great atmosphere, amazing service. We found the Food really salty (halibut dish and mushroom pasta) and it was REALLY noisy - that is why I only rated the experience as good."

"This is the second time I have been to this restaurant, and once again I was not impressed. Service was great, but the food was terrible.
We started off with the Pork Belly, which tasted like it had been cooked earlier in the day and reheated. Certainly not "melt-in-your-mouth" delish as I have experienced elsewhere with Pork Belly.
My Goat Cheese salad was swimming in dressing, mostly oil and salt. The Goat cheese was deep fried, as expected, but freezing cold in the middle (still frozen).
And finally, I had the Halibut, fish of the day. The halibut was severely overcooked and over salted. The fingerling potato's were overcooked as well.
Sadly, I will not be returning to this restaurant."

"I guess I was just expecting more from this place since it has got some great reviews. I had the trout and my friend had the market fish of the day (monkfish). The trout was well done but I felt like the braised greens were really greasy. Our mushroom appetizer was delightful and the Brussels sprouts were okay. The food just didn't live up to the hype. It's not bad, it's jut not amazing"

"Service was ok but the food was NOT good. Normally the Copper Onion is great but my pasta was dry & undercooked. It was a VERY small portion & plopped on the plate all stuck together as though they had scraped the bottom of the pan to get the last of it. The sides were ok but they too looked like it was thrown in a dish from a cafeteria worker. My mom's pasta was the same way, mediocre & lacking taste or presentation. My boyfriend's burger was sub-par & I felt really bad because I had been raving about the burger for so long & then it was disappointing. Our server was really nice but one of the bus boys seemed to be having a bad day for he threw our food on the table without a word or eye contact. Won't be going back anytime soon"

"As always, a dependable neighborhood gem! The table ordered trout, pork chops, steak for two, bone marrow, and a cheese plate. Everything was cooked to order, hot, and tasted good. Except for the the stinky cheese:)"

"We really wanted to try this place for dinner but could only fit in brunch. I was a little nervous because of the rave reviews on all the rating sites but it lived up to the hype. We arrived at 11am on a Saturday to a mostly empty restaurant that was 3/4 full by the time we left an hour later. I had the Huevos Rancheros and it was the best I've ever had including my own (and I've had A LOT). My partner had the egg over mushrooms and potato sticks and while it was good, we're not sure why it gets all the reviewer attention when they have Huevos like that! The service was perfect - quick, polite and helpful -- and the decor is a kind of stylish rustic that's done just right."

"My wife and I wanted a nice night out. We made reservations at the Copper Onion and were not disappointed. The food was incredible. For the first time in my life I ordered duck off a menu with confidence and I was not let down. My wife ordered meat loaf and it was not your mother's meat loaf. Very well prepared and the food looked appetizing before even eating it. The seating is a bit cramped, but well worth it. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for great food at about $25-30 a person. (excluding alcohol)"

"This was my 5th time to this restaurant. They have always been popular, but they are now extremely busy. We booked a week in advance and could only get a 5:15 pm spot. The restaurant opened at 5pm and our server was completely frazzled by 5:20. She recovered fairly quickly, to her credit. I ordered the fish special of the day as it was a favorite of mine: monkfish. It was very dry and overdone. My husband ordered bread pudding for dessert (also one of his favorite dishes) and it was so dry he did not even finish it. That has never, ever happened in his life! He ordered Tri-Tip beef, which was good. The mushroom side dish is excellent, and I would recommend this. The Brownie sundae was also divine. We made all these comments to our server."

"I was super execited to try this place! I was a bit disappointed when we were seated - I thought it would be a little fancier. We were seated by a couple with two crying infants. I thought "oh great"! But as the place filled up - we forgot about the crying kids! The food was fabulous - we loved it!!"

"We had asked for a quiet table for two as part of our reservation and we were seated very close to and in-between two other tables. In any case, the restaurant was very noisy overall and we had to shout to even be heard by the other party. It was early in the evening, about 6 pm, and when we tried to order the special for the night, we were informed that the restaurant was already out of it for the evening, both for the entree and the dessert. The service was rushed and the food was fair, although certainly not a good value for the quality of the basic food items and their preparation."

"I have visited The Copper Onion several times and have always had wonderful and a great dining experience. This was my husband's first visit. He isn't much of a food adventurer so I was a bit nervous and prepared to recommend the burger if he couldn't find something he was comfortable ordering. He had the steak fritte and couldn't stop raving about how delicious it was. We also had the warm apple cake with house made maple icecream. As usual, the food was extremely delicious."

"I've dined there many times, somehow it seemed louder and more crowded Saturday, especially since we arrived for any early dinner. The service was excellent, though. I had the trout; good, but I'd like more veggies with the fish. My husband had the beef stroganoff and enjoyed it. I think the overall ambiance of the restaurant is better in the summer when they have the outdoor seating available, it just seems less crammed and noisy."

"Located near State St and 300 south, the location is great for pre-show dining. The menu is varied and has a good selection of appetizers, salads, plates and entrees as well as desserts and a good drink and wine list. My wife had trout and I had the pork chop plate. both were very good. Service was prompt, attentive and the bill came within minutes of its request. Definitely a great place to dine."

"Copper Onion is hands down my favorite restaurant in SLC. Never gets boring with different or special items on the menu every few weeks. Love the drinks too. Only thing that needs work are desserts. Really a shame since that's the last thing your customer puts in their mouth before they leave. Grab dinner at Copper Onion and desserts elsewhere."

"This was our first visit, our Valentine's Day dinner. We wanted to try something new, different, and fancier than your average every-day restaurant. The food was amazing! We were floored. The place was pretty noisy but the food totally made it worth it. Slightly pricey but overall it was WELL worth going for a special occasion. We got an appetizer (Sautéed Mushrooms), dinner (Wagyu Beef Stroganof & Crab and Jalapeno Fettucine) and dessert (Chocolate Crepes with raspberry sauce). The portion sizes were perfect, we didn't feel like we had to roll out the front door. We will definitely return!"

"We decided to go to the Copper Onion based on a friend's recommendation. She and her husband went there for brunch and said it was delicious. We are foodies and love any time we can find a place that brings created from scratch items and farm to table, well, to the table. Our server was very experienced and the restaurant itself has a very good policy in place of food runners and other staff taking care of patrons. We decided to take a walk through the menu. We experienced the pork belly and pickles for an appetizer, the duck breast and snake river filet for our entrees and the cheesecake with Montana honey for dessert. We also decided to partake in the suggested wine pairing and a baileys cappuccino. We will be back for sure!"

"I've been to the Copper Onion twice now, and the food has been great both times. I have had the pleasure of eating at a number of upscale restaurants and believe that the food I've had prepared here is close to on par with many of them - in my opinion, it makes it a great value for the prices. The ambiance and noise and informality do not make it an overly romantic place - I'd use the phrase 'Urban Chic' to describe it - I enjoy it. Not any true weaknesses that I've experienced - I've told myself that I have to make a point of eating here more often."

"One of my favorite downtown restaurants! The service was wonderful, they offer unique "adult" beverages, and a large assortment of creative, flavorful dishes built around fresh. My sister and I each had a pasta dish - next time I think we will both return to the other entrees as the pasta was not tender (perhaps too al dente?). Service was outstanding."

"Sadly my husbands dinner was so salty that he only ate it b/c the server came back before we took our first bite and then didn't return until we were done eating. He was hungry and would have had to wait forever to get a new entry. He had the special that night and it tasted like they salted everything, and then salted the final dish before it went out."
