"It had been a little over a year since my last visit to Tamari but the overall dining experience two nights ago was nice. Once my guest arrived and it was apparent that we needed more room, the management moved us to a larger table which was appreciated. Our dinner selection was good but not as tasty as it had been in previous times at Tamari. Still a nice place to dine."

"The service was wonderful, our server was willing to help with suggestions. She checked back often, but no so often as to be annoying. The food was excellant; the combinations of flavors and the presentation were great. My only complaint is because it is small and the tables are close, it can be noisy making a more intimate conversation difficult."

"After we found a place to park on the street (not always an easy task in Lawrenceville) and walked into the restaurant, we loved the decor and were blown away by the menu. Tamari is one of the few truly creative restaurants I've seen in Pittsburgh, a combination of Asian and Latin (mostly Argentinean) dishes, served mostly tapas style. They also serve a more traditional maki (larger plates of sushi and other rolls).
The robata grill isn't well explained on the menu, but it's fantastic. The prices are cheap because it's just a single skewer of meat, but they were delicious. The beef teriyaki was particularly good.
The maki was also outstanding (definitely check out the TNT for a nice Asian/Latin fusion) and the wine list was fantasti"

"I used to love this place but I am, at best, liking it now. Service was lackluster and disinterested most of the evening. The ambiance on the second floor (my first time seated up there) was a little worn and unattractive (seated next to a wall that was covered with dings and scrapes at a table that was really too small for tapas service). Diners seated after we were received their cocktails well before we did, but then food service was so fast we felt rushed - pretty much each tapas item arrived within a few minutes of the order, which means that nothing was made fresh, I suppose - most of it was good, tho, although the mussels were sandy. All in all, a dinner that cost $150 for two people was served and cleared in 50 minutes!"

"Creative ingredient combinations and presentations give this restaurant a "WOW" factor. Roger Li is one of the most talented chefs in Pittsburgh. While the food is very good, the service really doesn't measure up - servers are not forthcoming with the specials and can be slow to bring drinks, pick up food. On the other hand, they are quick to try and take your order even if you have obviously not even looked at a menu. And for as many times as I have been there, they never recognize me nor rarely acknowledge me as a returning customer - even with their Open Table notes."

"I would love to endorse Tamari for brunch, but in all good conscious, I cannot. Love their sushi and evening seating, but just not the right menu or atmosphere for brunch. The tempo was set when there wasn't a pleasant place to sit because there was a large, loud group in there and the blinds were closed, not allowing any sunlight into the back of the restaurant where the seating is.
I had high hopes for the food because we love their sushi but the brunch menu is too heavy. Shrimp toast good, but not great. The beef bulgogi was lacking flavor and overcooked. The salmon Benedict was good but again lacked some light flavoring, like lemon. Overall the meal was heavy and lacked flavor. The best was the sweet roll and cocktail."

"If there is ONE thing I liked the most about TAMARI, it was the food. The walls and bar backdrop were hip, but the dining area failed to match the vibe. It cannot be called a special occasion place, even though our bill was not small. But the FOOD was well worth it. The kitchen did a great job of creating culinary masterpieces of Latino Asian fusion. On this Friday night, it was busy, noisy on the same level as bars and clubs. The entrance to the restaurant gives a sophisticated feel that gives way once seated on the bare wooden tables in a cramped dining room. I am not sure how to classify TAMARI, a great restaurant or a hectic bar with great food. Maybe this fusion is intentional but I will definitely be back!"

"The evening we were there, the bar was hopping! This was the first time we had sat upstairs and although it was pretty loud, the atmosphere was great. Service was a bit slow though. Maybe that was because the bar was so busy that the staff couldn't get to the tables. We had a reservation for 6pm and concert tickets for 8pm so we didn't stay for desert and we were late for the concert:(:( Great food and cocktails though."

"It was a delightful surprise for our first time. Plan to visit again. We were delayed by traffic (rush hour)but we called and asked if they could push our reservation back by 20 min. "I found Tamari on a lucky Google search, and I am so very glad I did! The tuna tartare, the angry lobster, the TNT, the cinnamon cardamom churros - everything we ate was incredible, and the Ninth Ward and St. Germaine's Rosé were both fantastic drinks. "The selection of both Tapas and Sushi/Maki dishes was, as always outstanding. The tuna tartar is the best we've had, and the shrimp tacos were excellent. It is great to keep ordering a selection of small plates and even with a full dining room the food service was uninterrupted. When it is full the dining room/bar is a bit loud for table conversation, and a broader wine list would be a nice add. We'll definitely be back soon, probably when outdoor dining is open."

"My husband and I had four courses consisting of small plates and sushi, and really enjoyed everything we ate. Our server did a great job of coursing out our food as we always had something to eat in front of us but never felt rushed.We sat in a booth facing the sushi bar. We really enjoyed watching the food coming and going and people watching. We were pleasantly surprised that it was not too loud. We were able to converse at a normal volume and were able to hear everything our server said. He was knowledgeable about the food menu as well as cocktails, and I always enjoy getting the server's opinion on various dishes when asked. He gave great recommendations, was friendly, and really added to our experience. We will definitely be back soon."

"While the staff was friendly and the ambiance was nice, I felt that the food was way overpriced for what it was. The portions are tapas sized, but barely enough for two people. The portions sizes go up as you move down the menu. I wish i would have known that before we ordered the ceviche. For example $9 for a simple tuna ceviche (and it was incredible how little we got) compared with a larger portion of average tasting chicken further down the menu for $10. The pork cheek was bland (like no salt or pepper) and the empanadas were average. I really didn't walk away thinking the food was that special to justify the exorbitant pricing."

"We never got the mushroom salad that we ordered. We asked about it twice and were told it was coming, but it never did. When my husband told our server that we never received it, she said that they took it off our bill because it was on the plate and we just didn't recognize it. Really??? We know mushrooms and there was not one on the plate! We have had this salad several times in the past."

"Most dinner fun I have had in Pittsburgh in a while. Really interesting offerings and preparations. Next time I go I will bring a group along, order tapas plates, pass them around, and just enjoy all the different stuff they prepare here. (And if my waiter is Will, all the better.)"

"As suggested by quite a few other reviewers, sit at any one of the bars during happy hour and graze the tapas style menu. Some food items are discounted at the bars so you can be a little more courageous with choices, and cocktails. There is a very nice attention to each plate and everything was delicious and quite unique, coursed out well. Do not expect a traditional entree, salad and dessert experience."

"Very unique and enticing fusion menu. Enjoyed everything we ordered and appreciated the unique mix of tastes. Everything on the wine list is by the glass or bottle, reasonably priced, and a a nice range of options. Servicee not the fastest (however the place was packed) but very friendly and helpful. Will return and look forward to trying the location in Warrendale."
