5 Napkin Burger is an upscale restaurant devoted to the art of the hamburger. The signature is 10 oz of fresh ground chuck topped with rosemary aioli, caramelized onions and melted gruyere on a soft white roll. "The food is delicious. Our table all ordered burgers but everyone had a different temperature and they were cooked to perfection. The location of the restaurant is also nice. Close to Zabars and a quality movie theater.
The service was poor. There are free refills, but half the fun of having a free refill is not having to ask every...single...time if you can have some more soda.
I would recommend this place if you have people visiting from out of town and you want a NYC type experience that is a reliably good time. It's in a prime location with lots of things to see and do in the vicinity. Otherwise I think there are better options in the city."

"Predictable experience. Great food. Service a little slow and wanting, but friendly and good. Have to say, this trip to 5-N we experienced the most uninviting hostess. Not sure what that was about. Nut sure I've ever seen such an unfriendly or unprofessional person before. Luckily, that didnt affect us one we were seated."

"They have really good burgers! I came here when i was a meat eater, and since becoming a vegetarian, i still come here for their veggie burgers. They are delicious! The staff is pretty friendly, and sometimes stressed out, but so far they have never taken that out on the customer. My only complaint is that the space is big and is pretty cramped, and it can get very noisy at times. I wouldn't come here for any romantic dates, but it's a good place to stop in with a friend or two."

"Great burgers, atmosphere a mix between restaurant and upscale diner, friendly service, I highly recommend it. I like my steak medium rare so ordered my 5 napkin burger that way and was a little bit unnerved by how bloody it was in the center. It was charred nicely on the outside though and grew on me after the first few bites. Might order it done medium next time though!"

"As always, terrific food with terrific service. They really go the extra mile to make sure that the customer comes first. "I go to 5 napkins pretty regularly and like the food there, though it's not consistent. The service is never fast, especially on weekends. This past Thursday I've had the slowest service on a weekday, with only about third of the tables busy.
When the food finally arrived afte 45 min, the burgers didn't seem to be exactly the ones we ordered but we started eating. After 5 min the waiter came, said it wasn't our food and took the burgers. 5 min later, our real food has finally arrived. The burgers were over cooked AND cold. The table next to us, whose food we were served first (who arrived 15 min after we did, btw) receives newly made burgers and seemed happier.
It's a hit or miss."

"From the snarky and rude hostess to the disaffected server, Five Napkin Burger made me regret my choice the moment I entered. The resto was hopping-- families, dates, etc. -- but there's no sound absorption so you cannot hear your dining companions very well. The food was fine. Doesn't it go without saying that it's not a good value? There are countless better places to spend $15 on a hamburger. Our server was less than pleased to be there, and as a former waitress myself I know that has more to do with the management than the individuals waiting your tables. Silly gimmick, this place. The best thing I can say is that they have a solid beer list."

"I lived in the neighborhood for many years and never seemed to make it to Five Napkin Burger. The burger was as one would expect and came as ordered. The appetizer was very MEDIOCRE to "eh". Fried calamari was on par with what one would get from a TGIFridays or the like. Gummy, nothing that stood out. Great for kids, ok for grownups. Service was very good and very attentive."

"We enjoyed all the food. Ordered the tuna appetizer and it was delicious. Ahi tuna burger was great. Mahi fish tacos were good. Visited because several reviews listed the veggie burger as one of the best around. Upon ordering we were informed that they ran out. "I made a 6:30 reservation & called to tell them that we would be 10 mins late. They said that we would have a wait when we got there. Got there about 10 minutes later & was told we had a few mins wait. The restaurant, which is small, was full & the bar was full too. So, needless to say I was waiting near someone's table. About 8 minutes after we were waiting, 2 tables were cleared off & cleaned. 5 mins later our buzzer went off. The hostess never realized that the tables were free & the same thing happened to someone else as we were eating. The waiter was prompt & the food was decent. I had the 5 napkin burger which was good, and the fries were ok. Only thing is that it was so crowded that people kept walking into my chair."

"Okay, so this isn't the 'best' burger I've ever had, but it did the trick when my desire for one kicked in. The restaurant is small, very crowded and loud. And, if you get lucky like me, you'll have a screaming baby at the next table. I didn't care for the fries and their appetizer pretzel roll with cheese is too soaked in butter. All in all, an okay experience, but not one I'd repeat. There are just too many other burger joints in town."

"First time here and I was impressed. Went on a date and thought it was the right mix of casual & trendy. We both enjoyed it.
Food: Burger was juicy & delicious. I got the Original Burger & he got the Avocado Burger. Both recommended. Comes with a bowl of fries which we both couldn't finish. For $16 a plate, you get your money's worth.
Service: I've never had faster service in my life. The waitress took our order and not 5 minutes later brought our burgers. She was very sweet & attentive.
Ambiance: Like I said, perfect mix of casual & trendy if you're looking for a laid back environment for a date or group of friends. Busy on a Friday night, definitely make a reservation. Can be a little loud, we sometimes couldn't hear the waitress"

"Three stars = good. This is a solid UWS establishment. It's a safe bet if you're hankering for a good burger. Nice beer selection to wash down the burger. Tasty appetizers. We went on a Sunday evening, and it was busy. We made reservations on Open Table, but even so, we weren't seated until 15 minutes after the reserved time."

"First time at this place. Was immediately greeted upon entering and did not wait to be seated at all, I did have reservations but non the less as I observed throughout the night people were being seated immediately without much wait, which might be due to it being a Wednesday night. Our waitress was fantastic, bubbly and very helpful. She went over the menu with us and recommended some of her favorites. We had the Bevarian Pretzel as an appetizer which she recommended and it was delicious! I had the Churasco skirt steak which was fabulous and my daughter had the buttermilk tenders with waffle and gravy which was delicious! We finished off by sharing a 7 layer devil food cake which was yummy. I would definitely return to eat here."

"We've been here many times and like the place and the food. We took my son there for his birthday the other eve and were saddened to find certain things were recently dropped from the menu including THE dish my son wanted and has come to love there: the fish and chips! The only reason I can imagine why it was dropped was that it was a kids favorite ad try we're looking to disincentivize families from making it a place for kids. Oath wise no clue why such a popular dish was removed. Otherwise we had a nice time ad will come again."
