"We had been to Karyns with a vegan friend once before and decided to try it again as it is a convenient walk from Union Station. I had the faux crab cakes and my wife the porabellow mushrooms. Both were excessively salty and greasy. Could be we are just not vegans, but we were not impressed."

"I was astounded by Karyn's on Green. I initially brought my friend here because she is of the vegan lifestyle. That and no one has ever brought her to a restaurant like this. I myself am not a vegan nor a vegetarian. What's more is that I enjoyed it immensely. I didn't know food could be this good! The staff was knowledgeable about the dishes and helpfull with suggestions. What really caught my attention was that my water glass was never empty. I've been to places where I couldn't even get a refill in a timely manner even if I ask. The overall feeling of the place was peaceful from the start. The noise level was perfect. This is a great place to eat and take a friend or date if they're vegan. Even if they are not i still recommend it."

"Had high hopes after several people told me how good and how much dishes tasted like meat, but I did not find this to be the case. The food was very inventive and for vegans, I'm sure it's great if you want a reminder of what crab cakes or chicken legs taste like. But if you're an omnivore, the faux meats probably will not satisfy you. Brownie was good for dessert and small plates risotto and flatbread were both delish. Great service from Gamble."

"2 vegans, 3 vegetarians and 3 omnivores enjoyed a birthday feast that satisfied all and was fitting for a special occasion. The omnivores who are newbies to Karyn's made many audible yummy sounds as they completely devoured their food. Needless to say, we will all be back!"

"It was very good food in spots, others not as much. I think the use of the processed soy didn't sit terribly well after eating it in a couple of the dishes. That was a bit disappointing. But the creative use of potato and greens was wonderful in the appetizer. The salad we had was marvelous. I think, as a vegetarian, I might prefer trying Karyn's Raw instead."

"I am not a vegetarian, but I brought a friend from out of town who is. The server was great. The cocktails were notable (I had one of the gin ones- fantastic). The wine list was decent, if not short on budget-bottle offerings. The food was fine. My vegetarian friend liked it, didn't love it. Maybe I'd go back, but I prefer meat."

"Karyns has been a favorite of mine for a while. But the last several times we have been there, we have found the food to be very salty. When I contacted Karyn about this once, she replied that they are catering to mainstream tastebuds. I find it difficult to believe that most people want salt in a quantity that makes you stop eating. I'm vegetarian, my husband is vegan, both for fifteen years. And sadly we will not recommending Karyns on Green anymore... Sorry. Try Karyns raw instead!"

"I was looking for a vegetarian / vegan place to take a business college. Karyn's caught my attention but I read comments that the atmosphere was a bit "snooty" and worried that it might be uncomfortable for the non-vegetarians in our party.
Our experience was completely the opposite of "snooty". Our server was very friendly and able to relate to all in our party, including those new to some of the cuisine. The recommendations he made we outstanding, and everyone in our group, hard core vegans to hard core carnivores left Karyn's feeling completely satisfied."

"I may be biased as a vegan, but Karyn's just took regular dishes and made them vegan. I was hoping as a raw, vegan restaurant, I would get the choice of some exciting vegan entrees that were uniquely vegan. I was disappointed. Also, we went early in the night and they started seating all of the people there is the same 1/3 of the restaurant. It would have been nice to have some privacy, but I guess they wanted to make the restaurant look bigger. Overall, for the price, I wasn't impressed. There are definitely better vegan restaurants in the city."

"I am doing Karyn's raw food detox so I went to this restaurant with a friend since there are both raw and cooked vegan options. However, I was quite disappointing by the raw selections on the menu. There was only one raw main entree and the restaurant was out of it. So I ate soup and salad, which was not the satisfying meal I was hoping for. My friend's cooked vegan meal was really tasty, according to her. I would recommend this place for cooked vegan food but not raw vegan food."

"I was looking for a healthy dinner, so tried Karyn's for the first time. I loved that everything was vegan and there was a wide variety of healthy items on the menu. I started with the kale slaw, but I don't think there were any cashews at all in my salad like there should have been. The flavors were ok, but nothing special, and I love kale. The roasted portobello mushrooms our waitress recommend as her favorite entree. Portobellos were juicy, the root vegetable hash was good and I liked the tempranillo reduction. However, the sauteed rapini were way too oily and there was also too much olive oil drizzled on the plate."

My only quibble is with the value: The entree's are priced pretty fairly, but the salads, sides, and wine are all $2-$3 over what I'd expect. "Our dining experience was very good. The ambience is peaceful and the staff is friendly. The food was excellent - we didn't leave a bite! I had the butternut squash soup, roasted beet salad and carmelized brussel sprouts. Absolutely delicious and filling!"

"I enjoyed our visit to Karyn's on Green, but would probably only give it 3 stars. It stands out in Chicago as one of the few vegan fine-dining options available. It is really nice to have a vegan option that feels high-end rather than grungy/hippie. However, when we asked our waiter how much to order (the menu consists of both small and large plates) his advice was poor. We followed his suggestion and were completely overwhelmed with way, way too much food. Also, there are a large number of "fake meat" options on the menu, which seemed unnecessary. I would rather eat an excellent, inventive vegetable dish than a soy/wheat product cooked to approximate pork or chicken. The best things on the menu are the vegetable small plates."

"As a non-vegetarian I found the dining experience at Karyn's to rate with some of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The flavors and presentation were fantastic and our server helped navigate the menu with great recommendations. The cocktails were also unique and delicious. I will be back!"

"Highly recommended for vegans and non vegans! Every dish was delicious and served so quickly. I think one of the best parts, besides the food, is the amazing bar! The bartenders clearly know their stuff and have a lot of attention to detail. I suggest having something from every section of the menu. The ambiance is so calm and made it easy to talk, no need to shout."

"I love this place! I had eaten at Karyn's other restaurants before but never this location. I made reservations ahead of time via their website for my belated Valentine's dinner, and everything was set up for us. The only problem was the location they chose for our table, which was a little too close to the front door. I was hoping for a more private location but everything other than that was perfect! The food is absolutely delectable. I haven't had one thing that I didn't like. I could eat here every day of my life!"

"I have been to Karyn's many times. While I missed the pizza, the flatbread was delicious and a good replacement. This round I did not care for the risotto. I was also disappointed at the changes in the dessert menu. The former desserts were fabulous, while the two cake choices were just OK."
