El Gaucho is the Northwest's steakhouse legacy focused on elegant old-school, tableside service for people celebrating their lives. Located in the heart of downtown Portland.
"With acoustic music played at just the right level and low lighting, this is a great place for a special occasion. It is pretty pricey so check out the menu so you don't get sticker shock. The steaks, crab cocktail and drinks are all amazing."

"If you are prepared to spend a lot for the best service and teriffic food, then this is the place. They take care of you from the moment you walk through the door until the moment you leave. It's pricey, but you know that going in. Great for special occassions."

"This is an outstanding restaurant for perfectly cooked meat and for excellent service. It definitely is a special-occasion restaurant unless you are very rich. The prices are very high. We knew that before we went, so we were not surprised.
I wonder why all the males waitstaff were bald-headed."

"We have been here before and it was excellent. The last two times were lacking. We like the oysters Rockefeller until this time. They added bacon which took away the taste of the oysters. We commented on it and they said this is the true recipe. We looked on google and it did not include bacon on any of the recipes. We will ot order them again. I had the steak El Gaucho and thought the hollandaise sauce was to salty over the lobster. Both my husband and I ordered our steak medium. Mine came out medium well, His was good. The difference of cooking a 14oz with a 6oz. I would ask that they have a better wine selection in the $50 range."

"Great food and service as usual. It is spendy, but worth it for special occasions. The pepper crusted filet Mignon, cooked rare, was just about the best beef I have ever tasted in my life."

"The food was good, but not superb. The service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and took the time for small talk and to explain menu items. The restaurant was a little dark, but it created a good mood for a romantic dinner."

"Having experienced the vast majority of the elite dining experiences in Portland, I can say with certainty that El Gaucho is a cut above the rest. We are never disappointed in anything. It is a true dining experience, and our very favorite in all of Portland."

"The food was excellent! Our server was very good at matching what our tastes to the menu items. The only drawback for our dining experience was the noise level. As the restaurant filled up and the live music was playing, it became increasingly more difficult to hear each other. We definitely will return, but probably for a more casual evening."

"El Gaucho is the best steak house in Portland and that's saying something because there is some stiff competition. It is also the place to get the best steak tartare in Portland. It is everything a steak house should be. Like any stellar steak house, leave ample room on your credit card before ordering, it is expensive, as in five dollar signs. My only complaint is with their wine list. It has some excellent vintages, but it is very aggressively priced in the mid-range (I cannot comment as to whether the $1,00 to $2,000 bottles are fairly priced). They could significantly improve the quality of their $60 - $100 choices and still make 100%+ on their mark-ups."

"We scheduled a nice evening out to celebrate a milestone birthday. El Gaucho was recommended by friends, so we gave it a try. It was a fantastic evening! The service, wine, meal, and dessert were all very, very good. We had such a good time that we're going to schedule another evening there for the next birthday. It was worth every penny spent. Don't hesitate to spend a special evening at El Gaucho!"

"Steaks were tender and cooked to order, however too salty. Scalloped potatoes were nicely done. The "traditional" Caesar salad was a disappointment, and side vegetable fell short of expectations."

"My wife and I were given a gift card to El Gaucho's a few Christmas' ago. We finally had a night to ourselves and decided to go and experience this restaurant. I had placed reservations about a week in advance through Open Table. When we arrived we were greeted immediately and I told them we had reservations. They took our coats and showed us to our table. My wife had the 8oz Filet Mingnon and I had the Baby Back Ribs entree. The Filet Mingnon was outstanding!! The ribs were fantastic too, but the only complaint I had was that the BBQ sauce was not very appealing. If the ribs had been naked and the BBQ on the side, it would have made the experience much better. Overall it was a great place and great food."

"I took my boyfriend there for his birthday. Neither of us had ever been there, but it was recommended to my by a close friend. The food was superb and the wine was excellent. When we walked in two men were playing one of my boyfriend's favorite songs, just by chance. It was Michael Jackson's Human Nature. We had a great time and it was really nice eating somewhere where we truly felt spoiled. Just wish we had had enough room in our stomachs for the delicious desserts offered."

"While we were sitting at our table, my husband got a phone call from the hostess asking if we were going to keep our reservation. Apparently she didn't recall sitting us. She first took us to one table and then had us move to another. I would have thought she would have remembered doing that. She did come over and apologize for leaving the message on his cell phone when she realized her error.
The food was excellent but the wine was not worth $18/glass. I just ordered a chardonay. We had let our server know we were going to the Blazer game at 7pm, our reservation was at 5:30 and we were still late. We spent over $200 for just two of us. Our friends also spent almost $200. Very expensive! Definately a special occasion destinatio"

"We have visited this restaurant several times and our party enjoyed the dining experience, but more by intention than the service received. We were there on a Friday evening, and the restaurant was somewhat busy. The service staff made a gallant effort, but we experienced several long lapses in attention between order placement and serving, as well as the long wait with dessert menus in our hands. My clam chowder was good, but not great. Similar with the steak - cooked to the correct temperature but lacking recognition of any promised secret spices and the sense of proper aging. This evening seemed to have slipped since our last visit both on the quality of food and service received, a poor result at premium prices."

"Food was good but overpriced. Waiter was nice, but misapplied our gift card and then the manager came over to "explain" it to us (that our bill had $50 taken off of it), and we had to explain that the gift card had much more than $50 on it and it was incorrectly run. He checked it and then corrected the amount, but not before making a big scene in front of our guests initially (acting as if we didn't know how to do basic subtraction), and then didn't apologize. Service should be better than that when you're paying $400 for one meal. Honestly, the food is better at Stockpot Broiler and they treat you like royalty every single time, so I'd prefer to go there next time."

"My husband and I dined at El Gaucho late in the evening prior to Valentine's Day. We were offered the use of Valet and Coat-check service upon entering and greeted warmly. Live classical guitar entertained us while we dined and provided quiet and stimulating background music. Our server was knowledgeable about the food and wine menus, offering advice and suggestions. Our meal pacing was comfortable and the food prepared exactly as specified. We particularly enjoyed the filet mignon and bananas foster, prepared table-side. My husband also enjoyed the Ahi tuna appetizer, a special for the evening. Overall, a wonderful dining experience to celebrate a special occasion. This was our third time at El Gaucho's and we've never been disappointed."

"We've dined at all four of the El Gaucho restaurants and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. This experience was good, but fell short of what had previously been a perfect record of extraordinary dates. The service was good but not impeccable which, for us, it had been every other time - just a bit slow. Still a fine restaurant - just not their best night - or ours."

"Wonderful old time steakhouse atmosphere. The background music was a little too loud which made the conversation level higher. Would have like a few less tables squeezed into the room. Otherwise, it was a wonderful experience."

"we were very excited to try this restaurant from the reviews - what a let down. The service was attentive and somewhat deliberative, but lacking. A positive was the caesar Salad - table service which was fantastic. However, the beef was a let down - the preparation was pedestrian and not prepared to order. over priced and pretentious. A better bet is the Prime Steakhouse or Ruth's Chris"
