Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. "I've been to Il Fornaio in Beverly Hills and in Pasadena and had delicious food and excellent service, so I thought it was safe to take my family to the Manhattan Beach location for Mother's Day. However, the food was very mediocre. It lacked flavor. The seafood platter special in particular was bland. The cannolis were basically just a lot of whipped cream. Our server was very nice, but she was so exhausted from a busy day that she was a bit forgetful and frazzled. The restaurant clearly needed more servers on call to assist. I definitely expected a comparable experience to what I've had at other Il Fornaio locations, but was sorely disappointed."

"Il Fornaio-Manhattan Beach is a long time favorite for our family, consistently good food in a big, friendly, comfortable space. The entrees are always good, but the dessert cart is breathtaking. I never tire of the affogato's espresso poured over vanilla gelato and my lovely wife adores the zabaione with its fresh berries and sorbet. Glad it's in our neighborhood. The addition of sea-salt caramel to the list of gelati makes me happy. It's terrific."

"This is the second year we have celebrated Mother's Day here. We had a great experience last year, both food and service were good. We were disappointed this year because the quality of food did not match up to this restaurant's standard. Both the veal and linguini were over cooked, the Arnold Palmer's were not refilled properly, we had to tell the waiter to start with the moms when talking orders, we had to ask for the dessert menu, etc. We had 5 people last year and this year was 12. Maybe that was the problem."

"It's a decent restaurant with great decoration and outdoor area. Service is okay, our waiter is swamped in a busy night, although we would like to get more attention from him. Food-wise, I'm disappointed with my own dish as it tasted bland, and not much ingredients, but the other 2 dishes that we ordered in our table are okay."

"We have been going there for years and have recently been avoiding it due to the wheat products. When I was searching online for gluten free restaurants, I was surprised to see that there was a gluten-free menu. If not for the website, I would have never thought we would be able to enjoy your restaurant again. Thanks for the gluten-free pasta. The gluten-free pasta was good not over cooked and mushy like some gluten-free pastas that I have experienced. We will be back!"

"It had been a while since we ate at Il Fornaio. We certainly had missed a lot. The restaurant was very busy on a Tuesday night. We sat at one of the side rooms. Calamari fritto was excellent - light, crunchy coating and tender calamari. The three of us enjoyed a delicious cannelloni, rigatoni with spicy sausage with a creamy tomato sauce, and the pasta with seafood, also with a tomato sauce. Service was attentive and unobtrusive. We've been to Italy twice and it reminded us so much of the restaurants there."

"I was a very disappointed in the Easter brunch menu and perplexed at the explanation of why the menu was so different than the normal weekend brunch menu. Easter brunch is a common outing and to have one maybe too breakfast like items was disappointing . Our waitress was very nice and tried to accommodate us but was limited by the kitchen apparently . That was very nice of her. Overall wouldn't go back except for their happy hour or to use the big meeting room dinner space."

"I definitely won't return here. Their Easter brunch menu included exactly two breakfast items and the children's menu had none. It took over 30 minutes to receive a glass of water and see our waiter (and it could have been longer had I not gotten up and asked for a waiter). All in all a disappointing Easter meal."

"Absolutely incredible. Had the most wonderful server who took care of all our needs. The food was well presented, tasty, tasty, and just the right amount. Would recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for something special to celebrate. The hostess was friendly and made sure we received a free appetizer as we were first time diners at Il Fornaio. Loved the whole experience."

"I ordered off the regional menu and was very pleased as usual. The black cod entree was very nicely done and the bean soup was delicious. My wife also enjoyed the soup but was disappointed with her calzone off the regular menu. It could have used more cheese inside and some marinara sauce (which our waiter did bring her when requested)."

"We attended the night of the Carnevale promotion. I made this note in our reservation - due to the fact that the promotional e-mail that was sent said, "reservations recommended". We were originally seated in the main restaurant - which did not participate in the Carnevale menu. We had to be reseated in the bar, which was fine. Our waitress, however, was very unattentive. We had to flag her down every time we needed a refill or to order. Even when we were ordering, she would stop mid-way through our group and deal with another customer, instead of focusing solely on one group.
To finish, we settled our bill with the bartender, not with the waitress. Just easier and less of a troubled wait.

"Before dinner we had a drink at the bar and the bar tender was attentive and fun to talk to. He offered us tastes of the different regional wine specials for the month, making our choices easier. The food was excellent as always. This restaurant prepares some of the best Italian food around. Unfortunately, our waiter seemed inexperienced or tired or overworked. We were there on a Monday night and it was not busy. He forgot things we ordered, we had to ask for silverware after the meal came and couldn't find him to get the check. It was my birthday and I wanted it to be perfect. Maybe next time."
