Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch.

"My husband and I had different dishes and both were delicious. I had spinach ravoli stuffed with sausage and cheese. The taste was almost like homemade. The wine was great, and if you want they will bring you a sample to help in your selection. Our appetizer was a piiza like crust with delicious mild cheese, slices of tomato and herb. The butternut squash soup was great. The view of the San Diego skyline as the sun goes down is wonderful."

"I have dined at this restaurant multiple times. The food is generally good but it is ALWAYS TOO SALTY. They need to do something to reduce the amount of salt. They are ALWAYS heavy handed with salt."

"Went for the regional menu, as we do every month, this time with two friends. We sat in a nice booth, but without a view of the harbor. The service was a bit rushed until I told the waiter to slow down. Everything was fine after that. Food was excellent, as always. We ordered the tasting menu, and brought back about half the food – it is way too much for one evening."

"Horrible Service. I had a reservation for 7pm and they made me wait over an hour to just check in. What's the point of having a reservation if you still have to wait over an hour to be sited? I didn't make my reservation for 8pm by choice, I had a plane to catch in Los Angeles that night and couldn't afford to be waiting to just sit down. We couldn't wait in line any longer and had to leave and found anything that was open for dinner. This restaurant ruined my girlfriend's and my Valentine's day. In the future, try not to overbooked your reservations - every other restaurant we went to hadn't done that."

"We were a group of six on Valentine's Day with a longstanding reservation. They could not seat us indoors and offered us a patio
table. We were hesitant but once seated it was a beautiful setting.
Patio heaters, a lovely view across the bay to San Diego skyline.
Very quiet (probably much quieter than inside). Despite the busy
evening, service and food were very good (could have been hotter). I do not usually prefer eating out on busy occasions like Valentine's Day but it was a very nice experience."

"Started with hostess wanting to seat us away from window, wife said no , hostess hesitated then sat us at window. Jerry our waiter was fantastic along with his busboy. The food was good with exception of brothers noodles weren't cooked right. My daughter and nephew had ravioli dishes and thought no big deal. The rest of us had good meals and portions were filling."

"Service was slow and terrible, had to ask, and find the waiter for every request we had, definetly not attentive. Other tables were also complaining, and when the manager arrived at the table, he did not even apologize or make them feel like they were heard. Terrible cunstomer service."

"We had reservations at 8pm.. we showed up 30 minutes early because it was valentines day. We had to wait in line for 30 minutes just to tell them we were there. We got seated 20 minutes later. The waiter was good, but are food took forever and it was not good at all. My pasta was not done. All in all I might go back on a night they were not so busy.."

"They completely screwed up Valentines dinner for many people. We finally got in after waiting in line for an hour (even though we did reservations a month in advance). The reservations were meaningless, it was first come first serve. But what was worse was how they sat us at a small banquet table packed among others like sardines, which was a huge downer. You can't spend that much on dinner and get cramped into a small rickety table in the hall. Not going back again ..."

"My husband & I went for Valentine's Day & we think the salad was ordinary, the food selection is limited considering it's Italian Dishes - such as there was no Chicken Piccata, etc. The service is okay but we like more enthusiasm and smile from our waiter. The view is fantastic. This is my second time to visit this restaurant and I could say that I am not too excited to go back."

"Il Fornaio was a great experience for my first time there. I was disapointed that they were running about 20 to 30 min. behind on reservations. I was first sat at a very bad table. It was right next to the kitchen, it was a very busy w/ alot of in n' out. They did move me to a great table with an awesome view, but I was again dissapointed that I wasn't offered that table first. Service ran slower that I would expect. I ordered lamb, but was never brought a steak knife. That was annoying. This place is great, but I would recomend they try harder on reservations seating on time and filling the good tabels before sitting someone next to the kitchen door."

"We went on Valentines day so like other restaurants it was a very busy night. We had to wait in a 15 min. line just to check in for our reservation. We were sat about 35 min. after our reservation time, but they informed us they were a little behind and we waited at the bar where they gave us some bread to hold us over. When we were finally sat the service great and the food delicious. Although the wait time was inconvenient everyone was very nice and we enjoyed our evening. THE VIEW IS SPECTACULAR!"

"I have to I was disappointed in our service. Our bus boy payed more attentijn to us than our waiter did. Our waiter forgot to out in our salads and appetizer. When he returned to the table with our dinner we asked about them and he told us they were not avaliable. Our food that we had was good but our waiter, Carlos, really dropped the ball. Nothing says romance like being forgotten."

"I reserved a table for brunch on Valentine's Day. After we were seated we waited 20 minutes and had to stop somebody to ask to take our drink order. I didn't expect the service to be so poor for such a nice restaurant. Unattentive. When we finally got our food after an hour, it was a dissapointment. Very bland, no flavor, not well cooked. We also order a plate of fruit which was bad and old. Overall the experience was unpleasant and in my opinion we got overcharged for the bad service and food. I would not recommend this restaurant."

"I booked this restaurant at 4pm on Valentines Day and I was delighted to get a booking for 6pm. We arrived with a few minutes to spare and were seated within 5 minutes. We have 2 young children with us who were provided with crayons and menu to color. The children's food arrived with our appetizer as requested. The food was fabulous. The scallops and shrimp are a definite must have. Service was excellent and our server was very attentive. The view from this restaurant is amazing, especially at night with the lights of San Diego lighting up the skyline.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will plan a return visit on our next trip to San Diego."

"We went off peak...at 3:30 so the lunch crowd was gone and dinner hadn't started yet. Of of course we got a great seat over looking the bay with the beautiful view of the city of San Diego. The wait staff was very attentive and the food was excellent. We enjoyed it very much. The restaurant is very large and open. Not sure how quiet it would be when busy. There is also outside dining which looked very inviting. Overall a great choice."

"I have always loved Il Fornaio & was eager to try the pre-fix $29.99 three-course menu; unfortunately it left much to be desired. My 3rd course was phenomenal (lamb), but the 1st two were fair at best. On the plus side, our waiter suggested a really wonderful wine that was a great match for the lamb. The food came very slowly, course, by course."

"We love Il Fornaio but this visit we had a 7:00 reservation. We arrived on time and checked in with the hostess. We were told that it would be "a few minutes". Half an hour later we still had not been seated. The front staff did a poor job of managing expectations for us and other guests - just be honest about the wait! It was a cold evening and at about 7:40 we were asked if we would be willing to sit outside. Because we were getting very hungry we accepted. It was chilly but the outdoor heaters helped. They did comp a round of drinks after I asked to speak to the manager. As usual the food was very good. The view was excellent in spite of the chilly weather."

"Everything was fantastic! I was worried that the portions would be very small, & it would be the "atmosphere" we were paying for- Not the case at all! This is the FIRST restaurant where I wasn't disappointed paying a slightly higher bill. The price of the food matched up fantastic with the amount & taste! The service was incredibly friendly & it was so romantic with the view. I found this place through a friend at work & when my boyfriend was trying to find a romantic but not too expensive place for the weekend, I told him. Il Fornaio was absolutely perfect & by the end of the evening I felt so at ease & blissful. It just happened that evening after we left that my boyfriend proposed! I'm glad we spent our evening there beforehand."

"The food was not very good. Salad was heavy and without fresh veggie flavor and heavy on the cheese. Lamb was not well prepared. Part of it was hot and part of it was cold. Neither my wife nor I felt very well the next day which is a sign of low quality food for us. I cannot comment on the wine list because we did not drink any. Veal was ok. Potatoes and side veggies were good. Lasagna was ok but a little salty."

"Had a great time. Suggest make a reservation a head of time if you want a table with a San Diego Bay view. Pasta is great, as the rest of the food. Wine list is extensive. "My husband and I LOVE Il Fornaio in Coronado. We were a little disappointed that we made reservations and not only had to wait but we got seated in an area with NO view. "We went there to celebrate our 20th Annversary and were in San Diego on vacation. This is one of the few restaurants that has a view of downtown San Diego instead of looking out away from the city and was fairly accessible from downtown.
The spinach salad was quite good but even the two of us couldn't finish all of it. We ordered the raviolis stuffed with sausage and different cheeses and accompanied with a spicy sauce (Ravioli alla Lucana) - we both rather enjoyed the dish and I felt that it was quite unusual and nifty for an italian restaurant. We also split the beef tenderloin (Tagliata Chianina) but the sauce with pepercorns and balsamic vinegar made me think of (and taste like) A1 instead being a great italian dish."

"We love Il Fornaio restaurants, but the one in Coronado is extra special - especially if you dine outside. The noise level is very low outside, and the view across Coronado Bay is extraordinary. There are plenty of propane heaters outside to keep you warm at night. And the service, as well as the food, is always fabulous. :-)"

"We made reservations for 7:45 on Xmas Eve and we arrive 1hr early expecting any cancellation so we can dine early. Restaurant was full, and we proceed to the bar to wait. Bar was full and service was slow since the guys in the bar not only served patrons on site but prepare the drinks for the tables as well.

We were not called until 8:30 and food was ok and service at the table rushed our order but ok.

Overall fair to good, I wil give it a try on a regular night to see I service improve."

"Our experience was very disappointing. Poor service! First of all we waited quite awhile to even get our water. This was a Tuesday night, not busy. Then we didn't get our appetizer. Then I was very disappointed with my food because it had a smoky ham taste to it. I have had that flavor in food there before so I made sure to look at the ingredients in what I ordered and I didn't see prosciuto(sp)in it at all so I thought it would be without that flavor. I didn't like it at all but was hungry so ate some, then asked the waiter to box it up so my husband could eat it the next day and explained to him my dilemma. They brought some pasta and marinara sauce which I ate. In the end when I asked for my leftovers they had thrown it out."

"My husband and I went to Il Fornaio to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. It was just what we were wanting. There's not many places you can enjoy a late night meal outside, on the water, in December. It was a cold night, but we were perfectly comfortable on the patio, enjoying the outdoor fire place and the ocean. The food was great and the service was very good as well. Overall, we had a very enjoyable experience and would highly recommend Il Fornaio."

"We always go to the regional dinners, but this was the first time we tried the tasting menu. It was a wonderful experience, but the portions are very generous – be prepared to take home some dinner.

Service was better than average. No mistakes, the courses were well-paced, and our server was attentive without being intrusive. Il Fornaio is almost always a great experience, but this was wonderful. If you've never been, make a reservation today!"

"We go to Il Fornaio every month for the regional menu. This was the first time in a couple years that we enjoyed the regular menu. Service was excellent, the food was fabulous as always, and we had a nice chat with the manager. Another great experience!"
