Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. "Went for Mother's day. Very nice view of the bay and downtown SD. Our server barely spoke english so it was hard to understand anything she was saying. We asked her if the salmon was wild or farm raised and she had no idea what that meant. We asked her if she could check with the chef and ask and she was gone for a good 30 minutes and when she came back she still didn't know. Just kept saying it was "fresh" but when she finally waived someone over, the other person said it was farm raised. As for dessert, she didn't know about a special menu that was inside the regular menu we were given and therefore didn't know about the dessert that was on there and had to ask somebody. Overall it was okay."

"We had two outstanding ravioli dishes, the Italian names escape me but one was stuffed with butternut squash, the other italian sausage. We had the full order, so our lunch the next day was outstanding as well.
Excellent, attentive service, with a very nice visit from the manager, and gifts of tiramisu and orechette. We had a view of the harbor and skyline, sailboats and jetskis. Lovely."

"Came here for Mother's Day and pretty happy with the place. Amazing view of San Diego, good service and great food. The only downside was that when they brought us the pasta we had to fetch down the cheese guy so we can have some parmessan cheese and when he came over he just seemed to be all over the place, but beyond that the experience was nice and I truly recommend this place for those that want to have a nice lunch or dinner with great view."

"While we are from San Antonio, we never miss the chance while in San Diego to go to Il Fornaio and bring along a friend or 2 or 3+++. The food is always delicious. The only problem is there are so many choices. The waitstaff is excellent and someone is always at the ready to assist you whether it be the person who seats you, your waiter or the person bringing your food. We had a vegan in our group who does not eat dairy and they happily accommodated his request on one dish to prepare it without cheese. He loved it and the butternut squash ravioli and seafood pasta dish were raved about by all who partook.. Our only complaint is that there is no Il Fornaio in San Antonio!!"

"We had our wedding at the SD county clerk, and right afterwards we went to IL Fornagio. Spend a wonderful time with our families and obviously my wife and I were delighted.
The scenery of SD Bay is breath taken, the ambiance perfect and food superb.

"The location is gorgeous on the bay looking at the city. The menu is full of detailed, artful surprises. Excellent wait staff. Some concerns: The wine list was extensive but seemed very pricey with NO "starter" priced selections. No dress code for diners means you and your sharply dressed date will dine next to hip-hop kid in sweats and a flashy baseball cap. Seems a little disappointing, but keeping your eyes on your plate or out the huge windows puts it all in perspective."

"All too often restaurants in any city that have a spectacular view can easily be mediocre when it comes to the food and service. "Food was amazingly served very fast! Was really impressed! Great job! From serving the appetizers to the main menu, our server was excellent, even the bus boy was very efficient and quick to clear up used dishes..was here last year May 2012, then I already had an excellent service...had to come back as I know I wouldn't be disappointed to celebrate another, memorable occasion with my loved ones and special friends...and definitely, the food tasted so delectable..I definitely would recommend this place to others!!"

"The food was just ok, disappointingly so. There's no reason that this place shouldn't have the best food. My veal dish was good, but not great. The sea bass was delish--that dish was the best of the four. The chocolate creme brulee was the best dessert pick too, although the masrsala wine dessert with fruit was very good as well.
We brought our own wine, and the corkage fee was only $15, which was nice, considering i've seen it as high as $30.
Great atmosphere and ambiance, but the food is...eh. :-("

"We ordered the wrong meal- we had the free range chicken- it was just not good at all- and the mashed potatoes were served cold. We should have ordered pizza (they have what looks like the best pizza ovens) and pasta- that is what to order there. However the bread was the best I ever had-my family lives in san diego and they will try again as the view is so spectacular- they will just order what you really should."

The wait staff was less than attentive since they had a large group to also attend to in the adjoining room so placing our order took awhile. "The food did not live up to the expectations, the waiters inability to speak english was unexpected and he did not seem to be very interested in explaining to us the key dishes made there.

"of all the years I have been coming to Il Fornaio, this was the worst because of the service. We had a party of 12 and the waitress was more interested in taking care of her other smaller tables than us. We saw the bus boys more than her. She never took any initiative in asking if we wanted refillls or other beverages and we waited and waited for the dessert tray which never came so none of the group had any.
It was a special occaasion and asked her to take a photo of the group out side on the restaurant lanai, we waited so long for her to come and take a photo that a guest at another table came out and took the picture for us.
After bragging about how great Il Foraio was prior to this event, it was very embarrassing and aggravating."

"We had a party of 16, and rather than seating us at a long table they put several together side-by-side to form a square table with four per side. The result is that we could talk to anyone at the table without shouting and hear everyone at our table, too!"

"We ate lunch before going to Lamb's Theatre for Damien. The waiter was helpful, and gave us lots of time to decide from the menu. The food was freshly prepared and delicious. We all agreed it was a good experience, and we would come again."

"We haven't eaten at an Il Fornaio for awhile but have always enjoyed it in the past. This visit was just so-so. The waitress was detached from the start, maybe even ticked off about something. We weren't extremely hungry and knew we wanted just salad, pizza and wine, so we were ready to order pretty quickly. We ordered a cheese pizza with an additional topping of sausage because my son is picky about vegetables and fruit. Oddly, the sausage came in a bowl separate from the pizza, so we just poured it on the pizza. We gobbled up the salad and pizza. We ordered chocolate mousse for dessert, but the waitress didn't mention it contained raspberries, which my wife and I loved, but again my son didn't."

"The restaurant has a magnificent view of San Diego Bay and skyline. Considering how ritzy Coronado can be, the menu items were reasonably priced. The only criticism I could offer is the "small" menu portions are too small. You either get the regular portion, which is gigantic, or the small, which is way too small. Still, this is one of the classiest, most personable restaurants we've visited in San Diego. We will definitely go back!!!"

"We've been to your restaurant many times in the ten years we've lived in San Diego. It's our "go-to" restaurant for regular dining, special occasions, and surprise guests. Because of our enjoyment there, we've also made Il Fornaio in Carmel a "must"!
However, our last visit was a bit disappointing. Despite it being a Thursday night with few customers, our service was extremely slow, and the food cold when we finally received it. During desert, my wife never did receive the latte she asked for (twice!)along with her creme brulee.
When the bus boy keeps apologizing for the slow service and missed items (but not the waiter!), something is wrong.
We will continue to frequent your restaurant, but we hope you solve the recent problems!"

"We arrived a bit early but the restaurant had no problem seating us right away. It had a nice ambience to it, including a great view of metro San Diego. Appearances at our table by our server seemed perfectly timed and unrushed. Our server answered all of our questions about the various dishes quite knowledgeably. Our entrees were absolutely fantastic(Cannelloni al Forno & Petto di Pollo). We asked our server to recommend a wine for each dish, and his choices were right on the money. He brought out the requested dessert tray, explained a couple in detail, then returned with our desserts(Crema al Doppio Gusto & Crespella di Mele -- both stupendous! Our bill was less than $100, which, given what we ordered, seemed like a steal."

"They easily hosted our group of 9, and gave us a choice of dining outdoors or in. We chose inside, as it was a bit chilly. Our waiter was helpful and friendly. The food was great all around, though I expected my lasagna to be more tomato-based. It was great none the less. The prices were very reasonable, and we were able to dine without greatly exceeding our expense limits."

"We had the best time. Our waiter was fantastic. We are Italian and so was our waiter, he treated us so nicely, attententive and thoroughly explained the menu options. We all had the three course options and they were very good. The homemade bread was delicious.
We will definitely be back....the food, the service and the view, you can't beat it!!!"

"Always one of my favorite restaurants! Especially for out of town guests and celebrations. I enjoy the variety of selections and their pasta is exceptional. I like the fact I can order half of a pasta dish and do not fret about calories. Service was great for our party of 8 and no one was left waiting or wanting for anything. The house chianti was pleasantly exceptional.Only one complaint- if you are having a before dinner drink during happy hour they won't let you take the drink to your table when your name is called (a just instituted policy). I'm guessing many people took advantage of the great happy hour prices. Still, it just doesn't seem right for such a fine restaurant. Felt sorry for staff having to tell us to go back to bar!!"
