Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

"Had eaten here before, but never had such an all around bad experience. Mother's Day at 4:30pm. Disorganized from the get-go. NOT very crowded, but for some reason the wait staff-both waiters and bus boys were on another planet. No bread for us(but ok for the other tables) no clearing of used dishes and just about as worse service we've ever had anywhere. As for the food, it was so nothing that it did not make the aggravation any easier. Everything was either too spicy or too bland. Flavor was missing on all counts. Obviously, no returns here."

"I have always enjoyed the view from the deck of Il Fornaio - still do. A wonderful place to sit and watch the sunset over a meal and a glass of wine. However, the food the last few times I have been there seems to be getting mroe mediocre. The service has remained constant (good but not outstanding) and the wine list is above average. But the food will keep me from returning any time soon unless bringing out of towners for the view."

"We went here for Mother's Day lunch and sat on the patio. This is my third time here in the last year and will be my last for a while as a lunch or dinner choice. I had to ask several times for our wine and the food hss not been very good. Thre servers were very friendly, but not efficient. I recommend Il Fornio for drinks and appetizers with friends or Happy Hour, but not for lunch or dinner."

"We went there during the Mother's day weekend. It was busy but not specially overcrowded. The service was very good but the food left something to be desired. The kids' pizzas were somewhat soggy. My fish was mostly skin and the veal my wife had was too 'gamy', as if it was not marinated at all. Beautiful view though!"

"We sat in the coverd patio area and normally this is fine, but we sat next to large party and they were loud enough that we had a hard time talking. The people that worked at Il Fornaio were courteous. The restaurant seating was fine. The food and wine were excellent! I'm sure we will dine at Il Fornaio again and we would recommend it to others."

"By and large, my experiences at this restaurant have been good. But I have 2 complaints about our recent visit: first, a nearby table had a family with three young children that they were doing very little to keep from disrupting the rest of the diners. The screaming and running around lasted some time (15 minutes?).
Second, I ordered a decaf espresso after dinner and discovered, much to my chagrin as I lay awake for hours, that I had been served regular espresso. Live and learn. If you order decaf, be sure to verify that is what they are serving you. My husband ordered regular decaf coffee and had no problem."

"I went here with my fiance and both or our parents so they could meet for the first time. It was very loud and hard to hear everyone and we were squished into a tiny little table that would have been better for 4 rather than 6. The bread was good but overall the food was mediocre. I had just been to Vigalucci's recently and had a very similar dish (the butternut squash pasta dish) and it was much better."

"Definitely necessary to get a reservation. It was very noisy but the service and food were excellent. We live in Santa Barbara and always go to Il Fornaio if we are in the area. The food is consistent and servings sufficient to satisfy our family of 4-6'5" men and me. The waiter's assistant was on the spot with more water, bread, olive oil, etc."

"We have been to this restaurant several times. It isn't great but good enough so we return. Had lunch there on Monday. There were only 3 or 4 people in the dining room overlooking the sea. I ordered fried calamari & the house salad. The calamari was cold & the salad was tasteless. I was going to tell the waiter but I had already asked for more iced tea & had forgotten to mention I needed more salad dressing. I was joking & said sorry to have you go back & forth twice but at least you're getting exercise. He gruffly said "I get enough exercise & don't need to go back &forth". Set the tone for a bad meal. Won't be returning."

"Mozarella and tomatoes as appetizer were not well presented and cut way too thick. Portion was not worth the money. Pasta was too soft, sauce was too rich...kept our stomach busy for hours. For a sunday lunch it felt quite empty. If it were not for the view, the atmosphere on the covered patio compared to a hall in a train station. This is an evening spot, tables inside were set up very well. Overall rather disappointing, feels as if the quality of the food deteriorated over the last couple of years."

"Our experience was great - Matthew (Matt) our server was delightful and Georgia, who has served me before, was lovely to come by and visit. Our meals were great while the noise was very loud! As we stayed quite late (diners that we are) it quieted down after 9pm.
I always enjoy this place and especially love that they have Gluten Free Pasta and other options."

"I have dined at Il Fornaio before but it has been a couple years. The food was incredible! Even more so than I had remembered. There were some young children seated at the back. Toddler and baby. It got a little noisy but that's more due to parenting differences. (I always brought coloring books, activities etc...)Also think the tile floor creates more of an echo. "This review is a hybrid of 2 visits. The first time was on new years eve 2013. We had a great time, special menu was pretty good. I got a duck ragu, which was tasty but didn't have any flavor that was distinctively "ducky". My fiancée got a seafood pasta that was very good. Dessert was excellent as well as the cappuccinos. Overall the experience was a 4 out of 5 stars.
As for our last visit (3/8), things weren't quite as good. The polenta was cold and clumpy, not smooth and delicate as polenta should be. The veal was tough and the dish was underwhelming in presentation and overall quality. The prosciutto pizza was great, however, as well as their wonderful cappuccino. Service was pretty slow as well. Overall score 2 out of 5 this trip"

"Don't go there for a reservation at 7 or so PM Saturday night. The place was packed, and clearly they are not set up to angle such a growd at peak times. While our waitress was nice it took forever to get drinks, food etc. the bread was great!.. The veal was terrible, sent it back and the pasta and seafood was just blah. No view at night

"I took my sweetheart for a special evening. We were seated in a remote location with very low lighting, no space heater and poor service. I've eaten there before with excellent service, so was quite surprised at the complete reversal. I won't be returning."

"It was the worse service I ever received there and I do not plan on ever going to this location again! Our waitress was rude had no edicate at all! I would not recommend this place to anyone especially if they get the waitress we had! I believe her name was sevanya. My daughter asked for a straw and she did not bring it to her so I asked if she could ave one and she final brough it half ways through our meal and she grab the straw with her figures and placed it in all of our drinks! If I want to have fast food service I would have hit to McDonalds! Then she ordered the wrong salad, got the wrong drink! I go out to nice restaurants 2/3 times a week and I will not be going here again nor will I take any of my large parties here ever!"

"We have dined at this restaurant a number of times, though mostly for lunch. The food is consistently good and a great location. We were there for Valentine's Day Dinner and it was crowded. The hostess could not find our reservation, though it had been made on line well in advance. That was of some concern to us since there were so many waiting, but we got in after a short wait in any event."

"The ocean views from the third-floor enclosed patio are positively stunning. One of the best spots for watching the sunset in all of Southern California!
The menu is amazing, featuring very authentic and regionally-specific Italian dishes with a creative flare. The quality of the food was truly outstanding. I took advantage of the Special Umbrian Menu being featured in February 2013, which featured imported black truffles. One of the best Italian meals of my entire life!
The service was mostly excellent and attentive, and the ambiance was pleasant and quiet. But as the place filled up on a Saturday night after ~ 6 PM, the restaraunt became packed and noisy, and we hardly ever saw our server again. Go early to avoid the rush."

"The food was just okay and we were very disappointed with the server. She was not friendly, answered me with "yeah" and didnt even bother to pour our wine from the decanter. She actually walked by as my boyfriend picked it up to pour it, and kept walking. She offered a "free" dessert for the birthday boy, and brought 2- one of which I was charged for. Very disappointing."
