Dafni Greek Taverna
Dafni Taverna, conveniently located in the heart of Times Square and the theatre district, provides a dining experience reminiscent of a small village in Greece. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, from the beamed ceiling to the wood plank floor, from the exposed brick wall to the soft Greek music playing in the background.
Guests enjoy the hospitality and fine home cooking that the country is famous for. The restaurant serves authentic Greek cuisine, prepared simply and deliciously, using only the freshest and purest ingredients. The menu starts with a large selection of hot and cold meze, and an array of classic salads, as well as a few innovations. Entrees include many of the traditional dishes, a selection of charcoal-grilled meats and fish, and a few intriguing additions, such as grilled quail on a bed of spinach, and braised lamb shank with hilopites (a type of pasta). Delicious, homemade baklava, galaktoboureko and rice pudding are prepared fresh daily in our kitchen.

"We went for brunch with two youngsters. We had asked about a high chair and booster seat: the high chair was broken and the booster seat was not there. Food was slow. This may have been an off day; I hope so. Because the food here is good and it is a good neighborhood choice."

"Everything about our evening at Dafni was A+! Our waitress was excellent, very friendly and helpful with a selection. I had the grilled octupus, mouthwatering! My husband had daughter had the slovaki (excuse my spelling) and I had the Aegean pasta (full of seafood, scallops, shrimp and salmon). The pita you start with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar was also tasty. We ordered two desserts which were huge (should only have orfered one)! The prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food you are getting! My next trip back to NYC will definitely include another evening meal at Dafni!"

"We were a party of eight, and stayed with the appetizers, lots of appetizers. The service was prompt. The food was very good. And the price was by reasonable. Seven of the eight were Greek, so we know Greek food. I would definitely go there again."

"Went to dinner here before seeing a Broadway show. The restaurant is inviting and clean and wait staff was nice but not overly attentive. I had a salad with salmon which was tasty. Not sure how some of their other dishes are but people in the restaurant seemed to be enjoying their meals. Food is priced well and the pita they serve it really tasty. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of this restaurant."

"Times Square is not exactly a foodie mecca, so I'm always looking for someplace pleasant to have a meal. This Greek restaurant is an oasis on a terrible block, across from Port Authority, next to a Burger King, you get the picture. Inside is a pleasant, comfortable, stylish dining room with fresh, healthy choices, along with all the Greek specialties you could want. I had a fabulous salad with vine leaves and eggplant puree topped with grilled salmon. Prices are reasonable. Right near many of the theaters and the jazzy movies on 42nd St. I expect to become a regular, as my office is just a few blocks away."

"This is a charming place on a crummy looking block right across from the bus station. The location is very great for lunch or dinner before the theatre. "This is a place right on 42nd St across from Port Authority Bus Terminal. It's an odd location, but for the theater crowd perfect. The restaurant looked good, nice tables, decor, etc. The food was really good. Very traditional Greek dishes and American Greek dishes as well. The service was the issue. Our waiter was a tad too quick. He never stayed at our table more than 30 seconds. He never got my wine order, when he did I never got a refill. Bottom line - food great, not $$, service okay."

"the reason to eat in Dafni is that it is inexpensive. If the waiter forgets to order your appetizer or serves you with mixed up entrees, you must overlook the transgressions. If the whole fish has less than three ounces of meat do not get upset. After all the food is inexpensive."

"I have eaten here many times. Food is consistently good but the wait staff is incredibly rude. When I asked for clarification of a menu item the waiter responded "what does the menu say?" Rather a poor response to a normal question. When challenged on his response the waiter shook his shoulders and said "sorry if you thought that my response was rude". My daughter, a lawyer wanted to leave immediately, but we had show plans and we were waiting for a third person to meet us there. So very disappointing!"

"Our food tasted fine but was literally thrown at us. The service was just rushing, rushing, rushing. We were asked to order literally as we say down and then every couple of minutes until we finally did. The food was there immediately and the 2nd course was presented while we were in the middle of the first. We were asked if we were finished a few times while we were still eating. It was not good service. And it was so noisy that we could barely hear each other speak."

"The restaurant doesn't look much from the outside, but it's really nicely decorated inside and the tables aren't too close together. Greek music playing, so if you didn't look outside, you'd think you were in Greece.
Staff were very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed breads & dips to share and then opted for a chicken souvlaki and a lamb souvlaki. Both were cooked really well and were served with tsatsiki (excellent!), potatoes or rice and onions. The portions were fairly large.

"A little piece of Astoria dropped next to the Port Authority. Because it is in a funky neighborhood, it does not get too crowded, but it is a good choice for before theater or to catch up with friends from New Jersey. Terrific fresh fish grilled to perfection. I have not had a bad appetizer. The baklava is excellent. Very reasonable for midtown."

"I was really pleased with the restuarant. The gyro and potatoes was fantastic. Loved the tsiaki dressing and pita bread that comes with the meal. Lamb kabob was also very tasty. Portions were large and good value for the money."

"Wonderful choice for a quick pre-theater lunch--food and service never disappoint and very affordable. Convenient to Port Authority and Times Square. You can't go wrong with the wonderful gyro, spinach pie or other Greek specialities. Warning: portions are very large so order small!"

"Food was good. Service was OK. Our server was a little too matter of fact and did not welcome us or ask how we're doing, just basically asked for our order.
As someone else mentioned (either here or another review site) I was told their credit card machine was not working so we'd have to pay cash. I didn't fight it since I had enough cash but thought it was a bit suspicious since I read about it happening before.
Probably would not go back based on this experience"

"We had dinner at Dafni Greek Taverna before attending the theatre. It has a good location on 42nd street, with a small and intimate room lined with terra-cotta colored walls. The acoustics got progressively louder and more distracting as the place filled up and combined with the music that was playing.
The service was efficient but indifferent and you felt like they were doing you a favor by serving you.
The food was hit and miss. We were brought a plate of hot pita wedges but were surprised that they were not accompanied by any hummus. We shared a hot appetizer of zucchini fritters with tzatziki. The fritters were heavy and dense, although the tzatziki was bright, creamy and delicious. My husband had the braised lamb shank which came on"

"We had a 6:30 reservation which we thought was enough time to have dinner before an 8:00 show around the corner. After repeated inquiries to the wait staff we finally got our food at 7:25 hardly enough time to enjoy our meal. Waiter was totally lame. Bottom line only go there if you have a lot of time."

"The food here is excellent. My husband and I shared a Greek salad (better than most), fried zuccini pancakes with yogurt (delicious), and a whole fish (grilled simply,but I like it that way). The service was very good but you have to open and debone the whole fish yourself. I like to do that. We arrived early -- 5:30 p.m., got a choice of table and had a few moments of quiet before the roar of the crowd began around 6. I would definitely return."

"We continue to enjoy this choice in the theater district. However, we were disappointed with the service this time. Our entreés came with a salad and the waiter delivered one salad for us to share....without consulting us. He did not provide another salad plate so we were left to use our appetizer plates for our salad. To our surprise, the same thing happened when both of us ordered the rice pudding. The waiter plopped down a large serving of rice pudding with two spoons and just left. Although my husband and I shared the dessert, we felt that we should have been consulted as to whether we wished to share. We noticed that this did NOT happen at other tables. Is this a new policy? We have frequently been to Dafni's- new policy?"
