"The food was superb - excellent fried asparagus starter and the scallops were delicious. The one disappointment was the halibut which had been smoked. You couldn't taste the fish because of the smokiness. Unfortunately, this wasn't mentioned on the menu."

"Third visit to this fabulous restaurant and never disappointed in ANY dish we've tried. The dungeness crab and avocado salad was outstanding as was the halibut; fresh fish - perfectly prepared. They also have an incredible wine list. We took our waitperson's advice on wine and were not disappointed. This is a must visit place whenever you're on or near the Monterey peninsula."

"We loved everything about this restaurant. We had been eating a lot of fish recently and wanted something different. Couldn't just cold turkey the fish so started with the trout ceviche. spicy wonderful dish with cashew pesto and firm tostaditos. Then went with the curried greens, gorgonzola salad which was a perfect match, spicing up our taste buds. To move to a fish less entree went with the duck confit which had a honey reduction and chile potato cake. crispy skin with just the right amount of sweetness to make this delectable. My wife had the 12 hour lamb breast with meyer lemon tajine. Melt in your mouth good. Our server recommended the Pisoni pinot noir. Intense color and mouthful of flavor with good structure and balance. great match"

"We quit having dinners here for a couple of years as the last visit was disappointing - the fish was undercooked and instead of taking back the plate, a pile of cooked fish was given as a side dish. Expectations were disappointed again as a crab salad was drowning in dressing, and it was really more a crab dish done tuna salad style. The waitress felt responsible and took the item off the tab, which was considerate of her. Feel this restaurant has gone downhill since we started visiting it years ago - most dishes are over seasoned (they obviously like to use a lot of chilies) and over sauced. For the price, there are other places that serve better seafood at more reasonable prices."

"I just want to say that my experience was phenomenal. I put in a special request for a nice white wine to be out waiting for us when we sat down and your wine person picked out the perfect one. Our server was a lovely waitress Mara, and she was extremely attentive without being intrusive. I truly didn't want for anything here and the food was truly spectacular. I love bringing my fiancee here for romantic evenings, and this restaurant never ceases to exceed my expectations. Thank you so very much."

"The service and environment at Passionfish is lovely. It is one of the better places to eat in Pacific Grove, but most of the dishes we got were a little too forced.
Passionfish is trying to think a little too outside the box. Everything tasted good, but the combinations were a little odd. Case in point, the spatzle with wagyu beef sugo, burnt chard and asiago cheese. The spatzle was nicely done, but it wasn't really a sugo that was served with it, it was a mix of little chucks of beef and chopped chard. Also, they covered the dish in fried potato skins? The dish itself was already rich, so the potato skins were unnecessary and rather ugly.
The 12-hour spoon lamb "breast" was lovely. I would highly recommend it if you are dining there."

"This restaurant has great food with excellent dishes. The only thing I did not like was sitting so close to other people eating. I don't want to hear another couples conversation when I'm trying to have a night out with my husband. Other than that it was wonderful!"

"Had looked forward to this place for a long time but would never go back! I guess we thought it was a little more upscale than it is. We were squished into a table 6" on either side of other tables and yet the restaurant wasn't packed and there was no waiting list. My Idea of dining out has never included time trials, but we were finished our starter plates and our entree's 35 minutes after sitting down. Granted the portions of food are not large, they were good but the kitchen is trying too hard to be fancy with sides when basic fresh food will stand on it's own. As soon as the starter plates were picked up our dinner was plopped down in front of us. The Chardonnay was delivered at room temp & didn't even have 5 minutes to chill."

"We thought local fish would be more of a specialty...(but several of the meat dishes sounded intriguing.) We ordered fish (slightly overcooked) and so were a bit disappointed, but the warm bread, reasonable wine prices (no markup over retail) and great service made for a pleasant but not outstanding dining experience."

"The name of this restaurant implies you will be eating seafood. There is great seafood, but much more. Two in our party of four had lamb and beef dishes. I tried them both, and they were superb.

"I am a carnivore. I desire thick juicy fillets or big beautiful porterhouse steaks when going out to dine. Passion Fish restaurant in Pacific Grove Ca. has changed my palate forever. I never liked fish, then I had the pleasure of dining here a few years ago and am now making this my highlight restaurant to go to on vacation. Just shared this place with my two best friends who adore seafood and they said it was some of the best they ever had. Very reasonably priced as well!"

"jantei numa 5ª feira. Nos hospedamos em Pacific Grove em passagem para Big Sur, eu e minha filha de 17 anos. Optamos pelo Passionfish pela boa recomendação no TripAdvisor e pq queriamos comer peixe e frutos do mar. É um restaurante mais requintado, com pratos bem decorados e muito bom atendimento de pessoal. O ambiente é tranquilo, uma carta de vinhos pequena porém com bons preços. A comida foi servida em tempo adequando e era saborosa."

"Recommended by a local. Building was unprepossessing so we left it until our last night in Pacific Grove/Monterey then checked them out on-line. Their website piqued our interest so we reserved for about one hour hence and found they had room but not a lot. Food was super - imaginative, fresh, beautifully prepared, service was leisurely but very knowledgable and approachable. Wine list was vast and when we ordered something a bit (I would suspect) unusual, there was no hesitation or any "I'll see if we have it" ... and their wines seem to be 'market priced'. I will remember this meal and the server for some time to come. A most pleasant evening."

"I've visited Passion fish several times in the past. Perhaps this was an off night. I ordered the sea bass special, which came out with what looked like a glop of green drywall paste on top. I would still visit the restaurant but hope they do better next time."

"seafood restaurant and Passionfish was highly rated. We were so glad we came. The area we were seated was small but cozy. Our waitress was helpful and suggested the gorgonzola salad for starters. It was amazing! The combination of sweet chutney with the curry flavor worked well. There were so many interesting textures in the salad - crunchy and creamy. Highly recommend this salad. The scallop entree was melt in your mouth good. We had a nice 1/2 bottle of wine which was just right for us. Huge wine selection too! We will have to eat here again on our next trip to this area."

"Everything from appetizer to dessert was amazing. Loved the wine list. A little noisy on a Friday night, but not overwhelming. Restaurant was contemporary and beautifully lit -- very bright and sunny. I will go back next time I visit Monterey. The waitress was sweet and professional. My husband and I had a great time. "I took my mother here for a little mom/son get together. We had reservations for 6:30 pm on a Saturday, and were seated promptly. We had tremendous service and were able to get the advice we needed without pretension or pushiness. The atmosphere is energetic, but it was not overly noisy. It has the food of a "stuffy" restaurant, but the atmosphere of a casual bistro. The wine is great, plentiful in glass or half/full bottle, and very reasonably priced. The beer list is small but still good. All the food and beverages were served at the right time (a few nice minutes between courses), and the tastes and textures were outstanding. The best part, for me, is they do all of this with sustainable seafood and great heart. I highly recommend."

"My husband and I ate at Passionfish in 2011, and it was exquisite! We were looking forward so much to our visit last weekend. Sadly, while the food was good, it didn't meet our expectations. Two of the four entrees were lukewarm when served. Our waitress did take the plates back to the kitchen for rewarming, but really.....warmed up fish? I feel sure this was a fluke on a very busy Friday night and will probably give them another chance, which hopefully will be much better."

"I read reviews about Passionfish on Yelp and Trip Advisor and thought I would give it a shot for my significant other's birthday dinner...I am a self proclaimed foodie and love a restaurant with good food & wine and Passionfish did not disappoint! Everything was fantastic starting with the 'happy birthday' message on the table, to the friendly service, the wine recommendation and of course the food. We began with the smoked trout ceviche paired with some bubbly, than on to the Dungeness crab & avocado salad for the salad course (highly recommend!). The entrees were wonderful and the wine pairing even better. This restaurant knows what it takes and has got it down in my opinion...we will be back with our friends!"

"Nice ambience, good service and delicious food. We had the salad with stuffed squash blossom and marinated grapes. It was interesting and good. So was the spicy shrimp and andouille sausage risotto and the scallop dish. Would definitely come back."

"It has all the makings and pretensions of a great restaurant, but the food just wasn't that special. We had the sturgeon entree, and the sauce was complex but not that tasty. The trout and scallop appetizers, though good, were also strange new tastes that might appeal to experimental foodies. It did not hit our palates that way."

"This restaurant came highly recommended to us, however they failed to mention that it was very, very noisy ... so much so that it's difficult to have a conversation. The dining seats are so close together it feels like cafeteria style seating and does not lend itself to any intimacy at all. We found the food to be too complicated. The actual piece of fish I ordered was very good quality but it was coated with something and then a sauce was added on top that conflicted with the simple taste of the fish. Way too much going on. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in a trendy, vivacious dining experience where you're not interested in any intimate conversation; more of a loud group experience."

"We ate at Passionfish our first night in the Carmel/Monterey/Pacific Grove area. It was by far the stand-out of our trip. We enjoyed the unique combination of flavors, including the panko asparagus fries and the salad with pickled grapes. Our bottle of wine, recommended by the waitress, was $31 and excellent. We all enjoyed the fish entrees that we had: trout, talapia and halibut. I wish we'd tried it out another night. Great fun and energy."

"Monterey/Pacific Grove area is definitely tourist driven, but this little gem of a restaurant is just off the tourist path and apparently popular with the locals. Specializing in sustainable food and local produce, everything is fresh. Wine list is good, although quite small wine by the glass selection - be prepared to buy a bottle if you want a good selection. My husband tried an heirloom tomato soup w/ cheddar cheese crisp and it was WOW, so flavorful the tomatoes burst in the mouth. I had a scallop appetizer that was excellent. Entrees were good, although I thought the appetizers were the real highlight of the meal. Serving portions were quite reasonable and prices were surprisingly reasonable considering quality of the food."

"As locals who frequently dine at Passionfish we have noted on more than one occasion that their excellent product, although selections differ by season, are remarkably consistent in quality. Each dish offers a unique flavor, and all beg to be tried. My foodie sister-in-law proclaimed the Gorganzola Salad to be the best salad she had every enjoyed. And don't pass on the Asparagus Fries if they are in season."

"I usually rate Passionfish much higher - unfortunately two things dimmed my experience this time - 1) we had a 15 minute wait for a table even with a reservation (that generally doesn't happen through Open Table), and 2) a couple of my party's dishes were overdone. My shrimp in my stew was way over-cooked and rubbery, and one member of my party's halibut was overcooked (which was funny since another of our diner's had the same dish and it was lovely). I will chalk it up to an overbooked Saturday night and go during the week next time."

"The food was very good. The preparation was good, the chef prepared the food with contrasts such that it brought out their unique flavors. My only complaint would be the noise level which was excessive and made it difficult to have a conversation (this can easily be remedied through the installation of soundproofing - it would add to the dining experience)."

"We had a wonderful dinner overall, but I will say I was slightly disappointed with a) the wait I had when we arrived even though we had a reservation and b) two of my parties dishes were not prepared well - my shrimp was over cooked (otherwise, the stew was really good and had a nice spice) and one of my party's fish (halibut) was overcooked - funny thing was, someone else at my table had the exact same thing and it was delicious."
