Everything about the MacCallum House Restaurant and Grey Whale Bar & Café is warm and inviting, from the sunny wrap-around porch to the convivial bar and romantic fire lit dining rooms. Combining the town's charm, history, local life and flavors into one tasty package, the "Mac" is a great starting point for getting to know Mendocino. An exceptional staff makes you feel as if you've been invited over to dinner by friends.
In the restaurant dinners are served in the former library, graced by two river-stone fireplaces, candles and garden flowers on the tables or, informally, in the sunporch café.
All food is prepared to order with an emphasis on the use of sustainable meats and seafood along with organic produce to create delicious fresh cuisine.
The food is complimented by an extensive wine list featuring local and regional bottles at reasonable prices.
There is a full bar and innovative cocktail list with seasonal cocktails and creative concoctions.
"while the food was good the wait-staff needs training: reaching in front of diner to pour water; the maitre d' seems to be an errand runner and doesn't know much about the menu or wine list. there are plenty of other places for fine dining in Mendocino..."

"Everything was good until our entree came. We took a little long with our appetizers so when the rack of lamb (especially) came, you could see the fat starting to solidify. My husband's sturgeon's sauce had a film over it (sitting too long under the heating lamp in the I think). I insisted having the rack of lamb redone cos of the fat and the meat was over cooked. I had to wait 1/2hr while my husband ate."

"The service in the restaurant was not as friendly or attentive as in the cafe! Food is the same, except fot the tasting menu. Salads are wonderful. Vegetarian options slim. However, in the cafe they feature great sieds that a vegetarian can make a nice meal out of... I highly rec one of the tables in the cafe...airy, views, unpretentious!
Since we did not order wines or expensive dishes...wonder if that made the service poor....we did order the 29 dollar saffron rissotto, and it was not worth the money.
Disappointing.
We'll stick to the great options in the cafe here!"

"This quaint little place is tucked under a hotel in an old-style home in Mendocino. The service was top-notch and they took care of me on a day that I wasn't feeling particularly well. The food was just incredible: a risotto that had a great balance of flavors with just enough acid, a steak cooked to a perfect medium rare with a sauce that helps it be better, with out stealing the show itself. The desert was just as good. We love this place and we always look forward to our yearly visit."

"Considering we were the only people in the restaurant at 8:00 PM, the ambiance rating may not be fair. We ordered the popular fried chicken from the cafe menu which was fine, but uninspiring, as well as a special, a duck ragu that had just a hint of duck and lots of different vegetables. There was no discernible sauce. The staff was warm, welcoming and accommodating, but that didn't make up for the rather dismal evening."

"Excellent service, however, the staff tends to run around too much although the restaurant was not even half full. It was disturbing to the otherwise romantic ambiance. Food was good, but not great or innovative. Wine list used local varity. We stayed at the hotel and had a very good breakfast there."

"Our table was okay. Food okay. There were two nice tables near the fireplace that the hostess said were reserved. No one was seated at them during our meal. I later heard her tell a customer that they did not reserve tables!"

"This was a treat for us- as a Valentines Day- weekend dinner. The food(oysters, roast duck and crab cakes) was well prepared with excellent presentation and we were set in a corner table- quiet except for the traffic on the way to the kitchen. The wait staff was very attentive but not intrusive."
