Please visit our website for more information including menus, reviews and photos, or stop at our bar to smell the roses. Jackets required downstairs, not upstairs... and for those days when gentlemen may not wish to wear jackets, lunch is also served upstairs under the skylight or by the fireplace. Electronic Devices, Cell phone, Blackberry, Laptop Computers... and misbehaving children are not allowed to annoy our guests. We recommend the care of a loving babysitter for the latter, and as for the use of electronic devices, we recommend another restaurant.

"If you want a first class meal with first class service this is the place. We had the three-course prix fixe theatre menu (with the wine pairings). The service was friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. The food and the wine were fabulous. We felt a little bit rushed between courses but we would have missed the start of our show if we hadn't been."

"I had not dined here in a long time but i remember the souffle being outstanding. However, I was totally impressed that the rest of the menu was very good. Everything we ordered was excellently cooked, to perfection."

"Evocative of times past, when New York City used to offer more traditional grand cuisine and dignified service, not just the "hi, I'm Susie, your waiter" experience. The lunch crowd was mixed - at one end elegant ladies enjoying quiet celebrations and at the other tourists in blue jeans who had to be told by the host not to remove their coats, as jackets are required. The latter type have no respect for protocol and insist on imposing their always-too-casual apparel, mobile phones and substandard table manners on the rest of us. Nevertheless, the food and champagne were too enjoyable for these minor annoyances to cause undue distraction. I wish La Grenouille remains steadfast in honoring tradition and quality for many more years."

"This is a good overall restaurant. Both the ambiance/decoration and the service was very good. The food was fine also but not exceptional. I have to comment that the service (including food) was overpriced, you would for example have a better overall service quality for a lot less in Paris. We paid about 400 USD for two people including 3 drinks (glasses) and water."

"Overall, the food was bland. The steak au poivre was good and mushroom risotto was excellent, but pike quenelles did not have any flavor, however the texture was very light and pleasant. Leek soup was also very bland. They do not use any herbs/spices. Grand marnier souffle had a faint hint of orange - not worth the calories. Oeufs a la Neige were great."

"This is a true classic restaurant. It is hard to find French cuisine that is not adulterated by "nouveau" attitudes or attempts at "fusion" with another cuisine. We enjoyed a quiet evening in their private dining area upstairs. The service was strong, and not at all intrusive. The food was expertly executed: first courses of foie gras and veal sweetbreads were prepared with precision and with a clear eye to highlight the flavours of the main ingredients. Second courses of oxtail and of veal topped with foie gras were clear indicators that this grand old restaurant in the heart of midtown Manhattan still knows its roots. A Grand Marnier souffle was a delicate and delicious end to a wonderful meal."

"The last of its kind in New York... classic French cooking with gracious French service. The food was superb -- the best ris de veau I've had in NY. The service was as lovely for a couple of nobodies (as we were) as for those who were clearly regulars. Oh, to be able to afford being a regular here! The only quibble is with the surprisingly high price for a cocktail and glass of wine -- $22 for a single glass of champagne, and $18 for a single white wine. The waiter might have suggested simply getting a bottle of wine which would have gone a bit farther and not cost much more. It was an unpleasant surprise when the bill came -- and moved an otherwise lovely lunch from a treat into the exorbitant range."

"I took a friend for lunch to celebrate her birthday and couldn't have had a better experience. The service was impeccable from the moment we arrived until we left. The pace of service for the courses was perfect--it was almost like they were mind readers. Cuisine is formal, old school French which is a dying breed in New York. Everything impeccably presented and delicious. It was an incredibly luxurious, cosseting experience."

"The last of a classic breed of French Cooking - if you don't like butter and cream, stay home.

We went for a surprise special birthday lunch for my wife with our son and daughter-in-law and were incredibly pleased with the quality of the food, the service, the wines, and the unusual nature of the other restaurant patrons (including a beautifully-turned-out older couple who clearly eat there every day!!!)

NOT CHEAP. If you don't drink you will save a lot of money, but then why go?

For a special event and a taste of older times, save up your dollars and try it."

"First time we've dined at the restaurant, and the overall experience was very good. Immediately greeted upon arrival and seated at one of the corner tables to celebrate my wife's birthday. Since the dining room is relatively small, important to know where the best tables are located so you can have some semi-privacy to enjoy the evening. Food was excellent, with nice presentation and sufficient time between courses . Captain and wait staff were very attentive. Although the wine list is not extensive, nice selection, including half bottles, which is our preference for each course. Our only minor compliant is that the lighting could be soften to enhance the ambiance and romantic setting of this much publicized location."

Unfortunately the first course of leek and potato soup was tasteless.
The red cabbage under the char was lacking flavor.
The char was very good as was the tart tartan dessert.
Only one menu for the $29 prix fix.
Great atmosphere and low sound.

"La Grenouille satisfied our craving for the classics:- confit de canard, quenelles de brochet, oeufs a la neige. The staff was attentive and pleasant. The service was prompt and efficient. The seats were comfortable, the noise minimal, the decor warm and traditional. As we were dining early, we benefitted from the pre-theatre $59 prix fixe menu, whose selection had everything we wanted. We had a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience."

"Our table captain checked in so infrequently, we waited 15 minutes before we could ask for a check. We almost stood up to get attention. It almost completely ruined our relatively positive dinner experience.

"As a treat...maybe not every week or month, but it still has the same charm and enjoyment as when I went for the first time almost 40 years ago! And NOT stodgy. I still don't know what formula to use when breaking out the service between the captain and the waiter. The captain seems to do everything except clear the plates. This is, in my mind, the best restaurant in New York City! An absolute gem. From the moment, you set foot in the restaurant you feel transported - almost a vacation for the evening. "Le Grenouille has been around for quite awhile and there is good reason for that...its great!
It never stops...everyone works together, they are professional, attentive, knowledgeable
quick to please. The food is as outstanding as the service...the ambiance is wonderful, romantic,
easy on the eyes. We were fortunate that there weren't any clients seated to one side of our table till the last 20 minutes we were there, which is quite unusual I've heard so we had
privacy for most of the evening. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much but it doesn't matter, it didn't happen. I just hope it keeps going for a few more decades!!"

"If Sam Sifton had ordered our dinner, he would have given La Grenouille 4 stars instead of 3. Just outstanding. My wife, who usually does not eat kidneys, had more than one bite of my rognons because of the amazing mustard sauce. Amazing hibiscus soup dessert. Only flaw: slightly hurried service, taking away our less than empty wine glasses."

"We were looking for a place to enjoy our 47th anniversary. La Grenouille was perfect. It was near an earlier meeting and had fine food & courteous service. It is a really classic French restaurant, not innovative but updated in sauces & concept,impeccable and very gracious. There is a nice celebratory feel with bountiful beautiful flowers, colorful and interesting fellow diners and care in many details. ( I was hoping to see an engagement ring appear at a young couples' table across the room, but we had to leave before that moment and will never know.) We are even thinking of a party with friends in one of their upstairs rooms for our 50th. I enjoyed a perfect red snapper fillet & scallops with a citrus sauce. The Tart Tatin was fabulous."

"After a glowing review in the New York Times we were looking forward to a wonderful lunch in one of New York City's few remaining temples of French cusine. "Food was spectacular, particularly the varied hors-d’ouvres and the chicken grand-mere (wish my grandmother had cooked it like this). Only downside was that they initially tried to seat us in the upstairs room (maybe a mixup, they said the reservation had requested it — we hadn’t). "I have been coming to this restaurant since the '80s (as a teenager). It is one of my parents' favorite restaurants. Every time we come to NYC for a long weekend, my Dad always says "Let's go to La Grenouille". My parents passed away and in their memory, I promised myself that I will start "re-tracing" our restaurant experience (little by little). The food experience was as I remembered it a long while back - the foie gras was like eating a piece of heaven.......the steak was just the right "medium rare" and the souffle was delicious.The service is very civilized and ambience is beautiful. Overall, one of the best!!!"

"La Grenouille is an old-school, classy, expensive restaurant. Good food, excellent service, an atmosphere of wealth. This is the kind of place where you can spend $200 without realizing it. We had the fixed price meal. I had an endive salad and the lobster/monkfish main course. My wife had salmon tartare and roast chicken. We split a chocolate souffle for dessert. The food was good but not unbelievably so. Definitely a special occasion restaurant."

"It's holding up well for its age (and so are its immaculately groomed, well seasoned patrons). Great frogs legs, of course! And delicate, savory sweet breads. For the less adventurous, lobster and monkfish, sole, lamb and beef dishes are all expertly prepared. I read that it was the last restaurant of its kind, and I believe it."
