A bustling eatery in the central eastside industrial district serving Italian inspired local, organic, seasonal, sustainable fare. clarklewis has received many honors since opening, including restaurant of the year (the Oregonian), 10 most notable new restaurants of 2004 (Wall Street Journal) and 10 hottest new restaurants of the year (msn.com) Dinner reservations are highly recommended, however most evenings we have walk-in availability on a first come first served basis. Bar counter space is first come first served as well. Online booking available up to a party of 6.

"first time dining at clarklewis. the overall experience was very nice. the polenta/porcini soup was wonderful as was my dining companion's roasted beet salad. she also got the roasted leg of lamb, which was delicious, but i got the pork shoulder and although the flavors were good, the pork was so tough it was almost inedible. the meal ended on a positive note with the apple torte. our service was very good also."

"Excellent food in a chic renovated warehouse-style restaurant. Fun to watch the open kitchen at work, though the wood smoke can be a bit much if you were sitting close. Overall, though, very enjoyable."

"I recently dined at ClarkLewis for the first time on Valentine's Day. The fixe-prix menu was in place so I will base my review on that. The food for the price was not what I expected. The quality just wasn't there for the price point. Service was good but not great. Overall the food and service were not top notch as prices indicated."

"Beautiful meal. My only regret was that we didn't have quite the appetite for the chef's prix fixe menu, so settled for a lighter set of dishes. Beautiful food, with a particular emphasis on use of very high quality ingredients treated with great respect. A special request for a piece of parmesan cornbread paid off with a wonderfully omelette-like texture and flavor. My oh my - I can't wait to go back!"

"By far our favorite restaurant in Portland. Light, flavorful cuisine. We travel the world and we always look forward to returning to the food we love at Clark Lewis. "The food was excellent. Everything was cooked perfectly. The only complaint I have is that the open grill they have sends smoke into the restaurant. We had to move tables, because the smoke from the grill was hurting our eyes, and you could smell it throughout the restaurant. Our clothes smelled like smoke, and we had to wash them after dinner. If you have any type of breathing problems or allergies, you would not want to dine here."

"The menu is small but well executed, however it lack any real true innovation. NY steak, Lamb, duck confit all prepared well but nothing which would strike me as a dish I could not get in 5 other restaurants in the Portland area. The wine list is not large but very very good with a nice mix of NW , French and Italian wines. It was good but nothing to write home about."

"ClarkLewis has great food. There is not doubt about the quality of the dishes brought to the table. They are works of art as they sit on the perfect size plate. As you go through the courses of the meal they increase however, the portion sizes stay the same.
It is the portion size and the feeling that is more than you deserve that we could have done without.

The chef makes it so you can experience each flavor. Give me a break. Its all about taste not just appearance. While the food does taste good it just leaves you wanting more."

"second visit was just ok. Nice vibe, service was a bit pretentious but attentive. Salads were good (endive and dungeness + organic green), wine was a short pour for price, entrees were just ok. Chicken dish was not that flavorful but cooked well, wife had striped bass which was a small portion and dried out. Overpriced for the food result."

"Cl has consistently provided good service, excellent food and great ambience in the four times I have been there. This last occasion was similar except for one issue. The bruschetta at $9 was ridiculous. It was a piece of bread (exactly like the one in the basket) covered with greens and apples. It was impossible to eat, tasted like a piece of bread with greens and apples, and had not been thought through at all."

"What a great restaurant this is. We'd heard about it but had never been able to find a moment to have dinner here on previous trips back to Oregon. We were finally able to have a celebratory, pre-christmas dinner here and it was fantastic. The food is excellent, the wait-staff possessing of a preternatural memories, the proportions perfect. Even the location, made me remember those moments wishing for an industrial loft in this rough, warehouse-rich neighborhood under the bridges.

The menu changes constantly so there's not much point in recommending items but the lamb with semolina gnocchi was great."

"A colleague who lives in Portland (and knows good food!) recommended clarklewis, so I had pretty high expectations. The restaurant definitely did not disappoint, from the excellent quality of the dishes to the wonderful service to the accommodation of my sister's dietary restrictions (it was her 30th birthday). On our way out one of the chefs in the open-air kitchen actually took the time to thank us for coming, which caught me totally off-guard. Don't miss this gem!"

"Nice place. We wanted to try it out with another couple. Felt like it was good but not great -- not memorable. Seemed pricey for what it was...or put another way, we were expecting more. Certain dishes were better than others. Excessive focus on local and menu phrases like "a gathering of..." seemed stereotypical of the whole "northwest" food scene. Its probably one of those hit or miss things since menu changes. Service was very good/excellent, but hostess seemed rather unfriendly so bad first impression (guess being attractive gets her by in life). Atmosphere was good but our table was too close to the kitchen -- eyes started to burn and we all smelled like the kitchen for the rest of the night. Don't imagine that we will be back."

"We've eaten here several times previously. It seems like the entree portions have decreased in size. The $27 black cod was at most a 4 oz piece of fish and the entree featuring a whopping THREE scallops wrapped in bacon comes in at $26 or almost $9 per scallop. Ouch. Rather over the top in this economy.
We also thought the desserts were uninspired. A couple of sorbet/ice cream selections, a creme brulee, etc.
The best value on the menu is their burger. $12 and no complaints."

"The food was good but not great. The presentation and flavors were very good but my New York strip tasted a touch overdone even though it was medium rare. My wife loved the monkfish. We both thought the entree menu was a tad thin on selections. The service was excellent and they had a nice bar. On the way out I think every single person thanked us for coming in. All in all it was pricey but a good experience."

"Great Food, Ultra Modern Decor, personable service that is not obtrusive. The only negative is that it is in an industrial section of Portland and Cabs might be hard to come by! Great NW Wine list that the waiter actually was knowledgable about!"
