Herbsaint Reviews List

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"While the food was very good, it was not as good as the sister restaurant Cochon. Service was particularly undewhelming. We were told of a wonderful sounding special and the server indicated that there were limnited quantities available, howwever he never returned to take the order and when he finally did, none left. While the meals were solid, the desserts, Bread pudding and a chocolate concoction were both just average. Skip this one and call Cochon"

Review 2 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Each menu item made us curious enough to want to try it! The roasted beet salad was quite delicious, and paired with a small plate and dessert, was an excellent meal. Like many of the best restaurants in New Orleans, you could easily drive right past it - there nothing pretentious about the place - but it is all about the food!"

Review 5 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I thought the food was excellent, but the server and the hostess were rude and not very accommodating. We had a child with us and it seemed like they thought it was a burden. I may eat there again, but the service really took away the quality of the food. The next day I went to Cochon, a sister restaurant, and had a better meal in terms of service."

Review 6 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Menu selection wasn't extensive but we found the food good. We were first put in back area which felt like a dungeon and asked to move to another table. We were then sat at a two-top by the bar. It was a little crowded, small table space but we did have a view of the outside which made the ambiance a little better.I recommend sitting outside weather permitting."

Review 7 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Food was good, but the service was rushed and the place was exceptionally loud. We were asked to sit at table in the bar that was crammed into a corner despite having a reservation for a month. Potions were on the too small side. Small is OK but food wasn't delicate enough to be that small."

Review 8 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was great but the wait staff rushed us and even when we tried to slow them down, they just kept rushing us. Food was removed before people were finished and we had to say no. When we said we were not ready to order, the waiter just went to the next person at the table. It was very disappointing. And, they were not busy, we got there early and was seated early and no one was waiting for our table when we left. I told the hostess/manager how displeased we were. She apologized, but it was too late.

Won't go back. Too bad, cause the food really was great.

Review 13 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"As a San Franciscan foodie for almost 25 years, I was most at home in this wonderful restaurant. It’s named after an anise-flavored liqueur made in New Orleans as an absinthe replacement in the 1930s. Chef Donald Link trained at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and won the James Beard Award in 2007 at Herbsaint. Other San Francisco connections include working with Loretta Keller at BIzou and opening Jardiniere with Traci des Jardin. The wine list is impressive and extensive, covering the world and focused on the Burgundy region. Very limited California wines. The food was outstanding, layers of flavors, simple elegant presentation, small plates. Wonderful experience and knowledgable staff."

Review 14 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Susan Spicer is right, Donald Link makes the best gumbo in New Orleans. It was great to see that the spaghetti with guanciale is still on the menu, and the pork belly was delicious. We're grateful for Herbsaint, a restaurant with consistently good and imaginative food. We'd be there every month if we didn't live in San Francisco."

Review 17 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Had another very good dinner at Herbsaint during our recent trip to New Orleans. As usual the food was excellent. However, this time we were rushed through. Appetizers arrived during cocktails and main arrived seconds after the appetizers. Entire dinner was 75-80 minutes. This was on a Thursday evening and there did not appear to be anyone waiting. Service was a little bit too efficient! Maybe Herbsaint needs to slow things down?"

Review 22 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"First of all, very pushy waiter. This didn't stop me but swayed my husband. Moules frites were absolutely out of this world - the sauce - if no one had been around I would have drank it. Then downhill. "Crispy" salad was soggy w/ tough pieces of bacon & blan dressing. The "housemade" spaghetti that the waiter raved about was a mushy pile of pasta- from Pasta 101 class.

Entrees were strange & interesting -- you have never tasted the tastes chef puts together - ever. But, are they great tastes? not so much. You will find ingredients you can not identify. I was craving a steak a thick ribeye..but for some reason the chef thinks you only want the tender side part - so I ended up w/pre-cut pieces of fatty meat.

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Without a doubt, this is our favorite spot in New Orleans. The food is simply perfect -- always beautifully prepared and presented. The Creole/Cajun touch is never heavy handed; instead the dishes are infused with the regions best flavors and colors. The fish is local, fresh and perfectly cooked, and the gumbo is the best anywhere. And, of course, a glass of absinthe only makes all of the flavors even better!"

Review 25 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I cannot express how disappointed we were with our experience at Herbsaint. This is a James Beard award-winning restaurant, so I was shocked to receive food that frankly was inedible.

We started with the gumbo, which was average (rich roux but miniscule pieces of chicken and sausage). I had shrimp and grits (passable-shrimp were what you would get in a po-boy not at a high-end spot and beef short ribs (overly fatty and over cooked). My wife ordered the ribeye (absolutely worst piece of meat either of us tried to eat- just horrible). The fact that our server said nothing when the entree sat uneaten was shocking. Chalk it up to a bad night, but there are far too many great spots in N.O. to waste a dinner here again.

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Chef Donald Link, once sous chef for Susan Spicer of Bayona fame, is the genius behind my favorite New Orleans restaurant. A native Louisianian, his food runs more towards innovative Cajun / Creole, unlike Spicer's more French flavor. But trust me - the food is unforgettable. You MUST try the grits in tasso ham sauce. And if there is anything with pork belly on the menu, GET IT."

"I have been to Herbsaint numerous times and loved it. This visit was subpar. The food was lacking in something. It was sort of blah. I raved about the Brown Butter Tart and it tasted stale and not up to the normal standards. Some of my guest didn't finish their food which has NEVER happened before. Bad night for the kitchen?
I also hate that they have removed frog legs from the menu. I would always get those because they were amazing.

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Terrific small bistro with excellent food. Wide variety of wines in the $50 range are a steal. The wine steward made a great recommendation at a lower price than the wine I was considering. Classic dishes had unique twists such as a citrus duck confit and a panko crusted quail egg on homemade spagetti. We had a rookie server who keyed in the wrong entree by mistake, and we really didn't care because he had a great attitude. The manager expedited and comped the entree even though we told the server's teamate that it was no big deal. You need a reservation. Enjoy!"

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My husband and I were in New Orleans for the weekend and were lucky enough to get a reservation. The experience was great! I had a salad with a blue cheese- delicious and the shrimp and grits. My husband had the short ribs- the sauce was very flavorful. Great cocktail list; we each had a salty dog. We split a banana tart with the best caramel sauce I do believe I have ever tasted. I highly recommend Herb Saint and would visit again when I am in New Orleans."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food is excellent and the service is very professional. Prices are in line with other linen-table cloth restaurants. The only negative which has kept me from making many more reservations with Herbsaint is that the tables are so close that I can't tell if I am eating my foood or my neighbors."

"Excellent interpretation of traditional Louisiana cuisine using local products. Some attention to the needs of patrons who do not eat meat would have been welcome. We would like to see more than a single salad that is suitable for us, e.g. soup and risotto based on vegetable stock."

Review 45 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Service was on point but we felt a little rushed. Arrived at 7pm and were back out on the street at 8:30 which is a little quick but not ridiculously so (and we did have three courses). Check was dropped on the table (literally) before it was requested which is a bit jarring for a fine dining environment. That is the sort of thing that wouldn't annoy me in a more casual place but with the white tablecloth atmosphere and prices at Herbsaint the waitstaff should have a little more finesse.

The food, as always, was excellent.

"Caveat re service. Wait staff awesome but in an odd twist bartenders surly and not the best.

Fortunately, you are not going there for the cocktails. Food is delicious.

Review 47 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Herbsaint is a small and hopping restaurant close to the convention center that does a wonderful job of conveying local cuisine with attentive service. The tables are small and very close together and the volume inside is quite loud, but the food is excellent, the wine list extensive (and expensive), and the vibe just right."

Review 48 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"The food was great, however I had a 9:00 PM reservation and was not seated until 10:15. When we arrived ON TIME the hostess said they were running 20 minutes behind and to have a seat at the bar. There was no bar room so we had to go to a next door to get a drink. After 40 minutes with no word from the hostess I went to ask when our table would be ready. She said just another 10 minutes. We finally got a spot by the bar but still have to wait another 35 minutes to be seated. I understand a 20 minute wait with a reservation on a busy night but an hour and 15 minutes is unacceptable. They called to confirm the reservation and could have easily called to say they were running late."

Review 52 for Herbsaint

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I started with the bass, lightly cooked with a crispy skin, Louisiana brown rice gratin, and satsuma-red onion salad. The fish was perfectly done and the sweet orange-grapefruit taste of the satsuma complemented it well. The gratin was a little overly cheesy for the light fish, but I still loved it. Dessert was grapefruit sorbet, and it's good they told me what the flavor was because I could barely taste it. Wines: I had a spanish cava and a domestic sparkling wine, but they would have done better with an inexpensive prosecco. Still, I give them points for excellent service and would be more than willing to try them again."
