EN Japanese Brasserie
Experience traditional Japanese dining in a beautiful, authentic Japanese restaurant located in the West Village of Manhattan. We offer the rich traditions of Japanese home cooking with Chef Abe Hiroki’s modern approach to Washoku, a relaxed style of dining centered around a procession of small plates. Like we do in Japan, we cook with the seasons, and savor the peak flavor of ingredients.
We adhere to the fundamentals of Japanese cooking: respecting the ingredients and their natural flavors, cooking in the moment, and not doing too much. We have created an extensive menu, featuring dishes as fresh tofu (prepared six times a night), Saikyo Miso Black Cod, stone grilled Washugyu steaks, an assortment of sashimi and sushi and a signature EN Kaiseki set menu, a sequence of eight extraordinary presentations. To compliment your dining experience, we have developed an extensive list of small-batch, artisanal sake and shochu to complement your dining experience.

"This restaurant is always crowded, and the food delicious. Although it is beautiful, and some of the accoutrements are really spectacular, there's a comfortable ease about it. I think that's why people feel free to converse in tones that are not "hushed". I've been to En 10 times in 1 year. The staff is professional and not intrusive. This is my go to place for eating great food, without having to be fussy about what to where."

"It's located on the corner of Hudson & Leroy. $220 for a dinner for 2 - I expect more for this cost. Restaurant is very nice inside - very high ceilings. Open kitchen was interesting. Service was subpar for the price. Sashimi spicy tuna roll was nice, mixed sushi a bit thick, flounder mostly bones (it does say that on the menu but I expected more fish), edamame cold (I prefer it hot) etc. Chocolate dessert was very nice. Overall it was a bit hit and miss. This is a block away from where I live so I expect we'll go back, but definitely not in a hurry. Nobu in Tribeca and Lure in SoHo are better. The latter being far better for food but noisier - that's the preferred choice out of the 3."

"I always go here for the kuroge washugyu yaki shabu. i love the interactivity of having to grease the hot stone with the cubes of fat. Mmmm. The beef is delicious together with the yuzu sauce. It is perfect in every way. Also, our server Taro is the best. Everything they do has a certain ritual to it. We felt very taken cared of with him as he attended to our every need and even apologized for taking too long to take out desert order. Will come here again for many years to come."

"This is the second time my girlfriend and I went to this restaurant, and the second time we've had a wonderful evening. We each ordered a different tasting menu and our waiter anticipated that we wanted to share everything before we even asked. Every course came with additional silverware and bowls as necessary to accommodate easy sharing of each dish. It just made our night that much nicer. We'll definitely go back again."

"It was empty on an early Sunday night. We had one room to ourselves pretty much the entire dinner, which was a quickly served tasting menu upon our request as we had 2 young boys. The Kaiseki menu was good with 7 courses and really large portions per course. But I was bummed to have missed the fresh tofu. It's supposed to be great, but I couldn't possibly eat anymore. Every dish had a sweet component to it, which I was done with after the first 2. Each dish had a distinct taste, which was nice. The foie gras/waguyu beef course with daikon was a bit too rich. I think one or the other would have made the dish great as both the foie gras and the beef was delicious on its own. I'd go back and try the a la carte menu (and order fresh tofu!)."

"We were seated for our 9:15 reservation by 9:40 not too bad for Saturday night. The food was delicious as always. We want to try other things but every time we go we get the tasting menus. Its so nice to sit back and see what comes next! The daikon, beef and foir gras was the standout of the Sakura menu. My only complaint are the tables. Way too close to your neighbor to enjoy the zen of the food. Also the bench seating is too high and the tables too low for comfort. I am short and my legs were hitting the table, can't imagine how over 5 feet could sit there."

"We had the special cherry blossom dinner which had a certain novelty. It was a bit too many courses and while most were well prepared and presented, it didn't include some of the special fish on the menu. It was lovely sitting under a large mass of cherry blossoms and the servers were friendly. Definitely pricey & would order off the a la carte menu next time."

"Although the restaurant was virtually empty when we arrive 5 mins before our 6:00pm reservation, they made us wait..... The sushi is OK! The "18 types of rice dish" was worth the 40 min wait!!!!!

"My Wife did a booking for my birthday as she was away and I was alone with my Sister and my two kids. one of the dish we ordered was Wagu beef, and they had 8, 10 and 14 ounces at market price. We chose 10 ounces. We started with sushi, good, but nothing exeptional, and 45 mins to an hour into after our order, our waitress came to us telling us there was no more of the 10 ounces Wagu, we then had to chose between 8 and 14. I told her they could take a 14 ounces piece and cut it to 10, and she refused. $360 for 2 adults and 2 kids, I felt we did not have the food and service we paid for. Finally my Wife mentionned my birthday when she book, nothing special, not even a mention to it. Wnet there many years ago, will not be back"

"Went here with a friend who'd also lived in Japan, as have I. In Japan, En is a chain that's so-so. Here it is a lot nicer, actually. Food isn't bad but avoid the sushi (at least the aburi toro salmon); it was awful. The atmosphere is nice and most dishes aren't bad. Good neighborhood for going out in after. The service was poor because there was no coordination among the waiters. They were so eager to clear your plate that even while you were still "working on it" they'd bug you every 20 seconds (someone else) to take your plate away. Like, please, chill out a bit. Once we found one Japanese lady to take care of us, it was a lot smoother. I'd go again, but book ahead. It isn't worth a long wait."

"The ambience is exquisite. I love the high ceilings, lighting and table configurations. We didn't feel at all cramped, and they manage to merge cozy with elegant in the most sublime way.
The sake selection is huge, so be prepared to take time to decide. It's served in a bamboo container on ice, which is a nice touch.
En is known for its freshly made tofu. It's delicious alone and perfection with a dash of soy sauce. The miso cod was cooked with a light carmelized exterior and served with grated with radish. The maki is the best in town in my opinion."

"Unfortunately our experience in En restaurant was damaged by the bad hospitality when we arrived. Though there were free places they made us wait exactly even beyond the hour-time of the reservation (we came about 20 minutes before). The person in charge of the sittings was not collaborative...to say the least...when the time for our reservation passed by 10 minutes we had to go to him and personally argue for our places which were the same unoccupied places we have seen an hour before....when we were finally already angry there were many other empty places and when we asked the waiter, he admitted this was the case for the last hour....it is pity that in a nice place like that they are ruining the experience by not being nice to the guest"

"Brought out fried chicken instead of stone grilled chicken. Brought out an additional dish which we didn't order. We ate it thinking it was complimentary then they charged us!
The waitress spoke so softly she couldn't understand us.
Had been recommended this place by many friend and was so disappointed."

"This is a regular place I like to frequent at least once a month, but lately the service level of seating has not been very accommodating. We had to request twice to be seated at a corner for a seating of 2 at 7pm on a weeknight when the restaurant was not very busy. Seems like the front of house needs to keep tabs on their regular diners better. Besides that, service from the wait staff and food are always good, which is why I gave the service level a lower score than I would normally."

"I made a reservation at EN based on the recommendation of a super foodie. I'd asked for a place with excellent food - 2 persons - special occasion. Tues night - 10 PM. Greeted warmly on arrival . Huge, gorgeous lighting, nice feel. Informed quickly that only part of the menu was available this late & that the kitchen was closing in 20 min. When we asked about the "Kurobuta Natto" (ground pork mixed with Natto (traditional fermented soy beans) waitress said this was an "acquired taste" & recommended against it - 3 times! (It was great!) Throughout the meal she seemed perturbed & rushed us. Food was truly delicious. But at MN, the owner or manager asked us (politely) to leave. Attitude colored a special dinner - but food was fantastic."

"The food was fantastic, however the experience was slightly overshadowed by our rude and curt host. Then, while waiting for our table in the bar area we had overheard the 2 couples next to us had similar interactions with him and they initially wanted to leave because the host had been condescending and inhospitable. In the end, the food was excellent, however at that price point I would hope for more in terms of a warm reception."

"This place is a gem for those who love Japanese food not just sushi. If you're looking for Tokyo or Kyoto style fare in a beautiful upscale setting, then this is it. The space is beautiful, the scene is energetic but not overly loud or frenetic, and the food is quite simply fantastic. Word of warning that this is real japanese food, not americanized, so if you aren't open to that the bulk of the menu may not be for you (although you may find comfort in the pork and beef dishes or fried chicken). Their home made tofu special is superb, and the duck mochi croquette my favorite!"

"Outstanding selection of Japanese cuisine with a dangerously delicious selection of Sake and Shochu. Took my bride for our 21st anniversary. I was looking for a fun spot, rather than quiet romantic and we found it. We felt 21 years younger. Reika and her husband have created a wonderful elegant and energetic place to dine on great food. I spent 5 years in Tokyo and the ambiance was refreshing. Tasty sushi and very good tempura were the highlight with the Shirou Shochu.
