Macello
Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.
Macello was recently rated as the "BEST PIZZA" in Chicago by Chicago Magazine (July 2010)

"The restaurant is bustling, colorful and informal. We did not have the pizza, which may be their forte--but what we had was not excellent. Grilled vegetables were underdone, although the dressing was flavorful. Sausage was good, but not a destination dish. The desserts were quite good. Our server was excellent. Probably will return at some point to try the pizza."

"This was my second time at Macello and I got the same results. The food just isn't worth going back for. The ingredients are high quality, but the output is sloppy. Twice we've ordered pizzas and both times the crust was soggy and the toppings instantly slid off. The pastas were over cooked, over salted, and not well drained (lots of water in the bowl). With so many great Italian restaurant in Chicago I don't see myself going back to Macello."

"Very cool place, eclectic I would say. Friendly like no other. Laid back, courteous service just loved it. In the middle of the block under the "L" tracks what an experience. I am a white linen table cloth kind a guy . This place is not but was totally ok because of everything else. On street parking was no problem for us. Food was excellent. Worth visiting."

"Delectable, authentic Italian food served by friendly and knowledgeable staff in a gorgeous setting. We were delighted by the handpainted light fixtures and murals on the walls, not to mention the soft light pouring through the skylights. The wood-fired pizzas were outstanding, and the pasta dish I had warmed my soul. Best canoli ever and the semifreddo was to die for. A very special night with girlfriends. I can't wait to go back with my husband for date night!"

"This place is under the eltracks! I didn't hear a train the entire meal. The wood burning stove gave just enough heat to make one of our seats nice and toasty. The bright colored balls and open wood and skylight ceiling with drive shafts/machinery suspended gave this restaurant an old world feel. The staff was very responsive and pleasant. I requested a meal of the waiters suggestions and couldn't of been more pleased. Great preconcert or pregame venue for the UC or UIC. Let full of great food, so I saved a TON on overpriced United Center after dinner drinks."

"I am not sure where the other Macello reviewers went - or what they ordered - but it clearly wasn't the Macello's that I visited on a Friday evening. My date and I were seated in a table in the flight path between the front and the back of the restaurant. Every single person that walked between the too-close-together tables would bump and rotate our table a few degrees. We asked to be reseated.
The calamari fritti was tasteless. It literally tasted like fried flour. The red sauce that accompanied it was similarly bland. Our cocktails were expensive and so-so. My date got the seafood risotto. The risotto was undercooked and the seafood overdone. My roasted chicken was dry and bland. Terrible food."

"Food was so-so, ambiance and service nice. Most portions are huge.
Pizza bianca was VERY crisp (almost like pita chips) and seemed to have been cooked too long with only olive oil on it and then adding cheese after taking it out of oven -- so cheese was cool and hard rather than melted. Sausage with fava bean puree was okay, tad on the bland side."

"We found Marcello when we were looking for a last minute Saturday night dinner reservation before seeing a play. While this restaurant is outside the loop, it was easy to get from there downtown in time for our 8 pm show. We called ahead for a parking tip (suggest you call for that insider information!)
We were seated immediately and the service began before we were totally settled in our seats. From there, the wait staff never missed a beat - timely, unobtrusive, and well orchestrated service from beginning to end. The food was amazing - two of us had tuna with saffron/shrimp risotto - grilled perfectly and like butter. My son had a sausage and fava bean risotto that was very tasty. Hazelnut gelato for dessert that took me back to Italy"

"Our experience at Macello's was delightful. The service was excellent and wait staff friendly and knowledgeable. The food was fresh and served out of the kitchen piping hot. They don't have a big menu, but their selections are excellent across the board. I would recommend this restaurant to any Italian food lover!"

"I loved the Decor of Macello, it looks beautiful at night. The food was outstanding, we loved the stuffed eggplant. This restaurant is good for a date night or with a group of friends. "Was looking for a good place to have some Brick Oven Pizza and this place popped up being a 2010 winner. We got there at 1:30pm and we were the only customers since it was late. We ordered a brick oven pizza and was surprised with the speed they were able to make it. The sauce and toppings were phenomenal. The italian wedding soup was also great. We finished our meal with the Cannoli with Mango Ice Cream and it was such a great choice."

"I really enjoyed our dinner at Macello's. We went during restaurant week and did the tasting menu, which allowed us to try multiple courses. The homemade pizza crust and pasta were both particularly good, and everything was fresh and flavorful. I would recommend the tartuffo for dessert!"

"We took my in-laws here for Restaurant Week and it was fantastic! Our server was ideal...he was very attentive but not overbearing. The meal consisted of FIVE courses, and each one was delicious. And the portions were quite generous. I will definitely be back for the wood-fired pizza, it was phenomenal!"
