Domenico Cornacchia, chef/proprietor of Assaggi Osteria, taps into ages of ancestral Italian cooking each time he steps into his kitchen and brings a rich love of the cuisine that he so skillfully nurtured through the years. “Assaggi means tastings in Italian,” explains Domenico, “The concept of my menu is based on a variety of items that may be ordered in smaller portions.” Before deciding to pursue his dream of operating his own restaurant, Domenico was corporate executive chef and partner at Café Milano, for more than 15 years. His culinary umbrella also covered Café Milano’s two sister restaurants, Sette Bello in Clarendon, VA., and Sette Osteria in Dupont Circle. For those who love Italian cuisine, Assaggi Osteria features homemade pasta’s, fresh seafood, veal and scrumptious beef. Assaggi Osteria sources whole fresh fish from worldwide sustainable sources,offering the finest bounty the sea has to offer. Produce is purchased from Amish farms and all desserts are homemade.

"Excellent - Surprisingly busy on a Monday night with inclement weather. Several items on specials menu were depleted but that's OK - Glad this restaurant is doing so well - It's an asset to this largely residential area with limited fine-dining options. "We had a gift card, so we went to use it. My husband doesn't always like Italian, but this isn't a typical pasta & sauce menu. Lots of interesting options and the grilled octopus was the best I've ever had. Service was impeccable but not uptight. We had a great date night- very adult and great food!"

"We enjoy exploring Italian restaurants in the NoVA area, especially those featuring northern Italian cooking. Osteria Assaggi is one of the best that we have found. Unlike many Italian restaurants, it has remained true to Italian regional cooking without apparently Amercanizing its menu to suit American tastes. One of the best in NoVA. This was our second visit and we will return."

"The only objection I had was that the table behind us was a party of people who talked very loudly. Perhaps if there are large groups you could separate them from the rest of the restaurant."

"I had my usual potato croquettes and raviolini. Good as usual. Seems a new spin on the raviolini: served with asparagus instead of mushrooms. Both are good. Hubs had crab with pasta. It was okay."

"There was a slight seating issue guest was seated away from me in the interior room and when I arrived I was seated right by the door. We ended up in the interior room which was cold as the arctic. Fortunately, waiter was very kind and moved us to the main room where it was like the tropics. Salad had absolutely no flavor or dressing or if it was on the salad it had no taste. Arancini = frightfully boring. There was no delight to eating the first two courses at all. It was not worthy of the price or any restaurant. The pasta were OK. Semi-freddo was over- rated."

"This gem in McLean satisfies my foodie palate when we feel like a relaxing night. The fresh mozzarella trio is fantastic and thier pastas and fish never disappoint this primarily pescatarian.
Save a little room for dessert as the freshly made zepole is fantastic!!!"

"We arrived at 5pm and saw half of the staff eating at the bar and half watching TV. They looked at us as we were the aliens, but seconds later remembered to "great us with a smile". I would understand their reaction if we walked in without a reservation, but we had it so why they were surprised is a mystery to me. BTW they work 11:30am - 11pm according to their website. This experience was really bad. Food was ranging from OK to awful, service was inattentive, ignorant and sometimes rude, and value even with Prix fix was not worth of spending for this quality of the meal. Last drop was them putting "no show" on our opentable account and us spending time to strait it out.
We will not return to this place and don't recommend it to anybody."

"The wonderful lunch option ($14 for an entree and salad/soup/dessert option) is perfect. The vegetable soups are fabulous - no cream, made in house daily, and sooo good. Wanted to add salmon or chicken to a salad and make that my entree, but they said no. (Note to restaurant - this would be a good idea!). Had the panini instead. Soup - great, salad - great, panini - so so. Wonderful place to have lunch with friends."

"This place is a bit pricey and the food is merely adequate. For a place with a menu full of delicious sounding authentic Italian cuisine the delivered product was simply disappointing, bland, and lacking anything to recommend. My party trued two different appetizers, both lacked flavor and I've had better versions of the other at Olive Garden. Entrees were the same, totally lacking flavor and with overcooked pasta and vegetables. There's better and cheaper all over DC, don't waste your time or money."

"This visit was for Mother's Day. Everytime we come to Assaggi Osteria, we are treated like friends/relatives. The food and service is always remarkable. All three of us are always pleased. Wilson, our waiter, always recommends a wonderful wine for dinner (also seems to remember our last choice). Our time and money are always well spent at this restaurant. The owner makes his rounds to every table and speaks to everyone at the table, (including our 10 year old son). Every patron is an important customer to Assaggi Osteria."

"Long wait for our drinks. My gold margarita was not drinkable, way too sour. I sent it back and had a glass of wine instead. There was excellent bread served with good olive oil. Long wait for menus. The veal meatball appetizer was okay, not delicious. After I ordered my seafood risotto, the waiter came back and told me they were out of it. I ordered the halibut instead which tasted good. My husband ordered the whole fish Branzini which the waiter filleted for him and deboned. It was good but not wonderful and lacked a nice presentation. His potatoes were overcooked. The semifreddo dessert was very good. The whole experience was so-so, and I doubt we'll return. There are plenty of other restaurants around that are better."

"The food here is fabulous. However, the service always leaves me cold. They are very rushed and almost make you feel as though you are annoying them. We ordered appetizers, a pasta to split, and entrees. They brought our pasta as a side to our entrees. I thought an Italian restaurant would understand that we wanted it as a separate course, or at least ask if we did. Again, the food is absolutely wonderful and makes me put up with the annoying service."

"I have previously rated Assaggi Osteria and I still believe it's a "Neighborhood Gem" -- but with a few minor glitches. The meatball appetizer on a bed of spinach, although still very good, was not quite as good as, and the amount of spinach was less than, on a previous occasion. The chestnut tagliatelle with rabbit ragout were still very good, but we thought they were outstanding on a previous occasion. Had these two dishes been as good as we thought they were previously, the food would have earned an "Outstanding" rating."

"We love Assaggi Osteria & have been several times now. We've lived in Mclean for 30+ years & until a couple of years ago, had no idea we had such a gem in our backyard! The food is wonderful & is consistently so and the service is outstanding - everyone is very friendly! The Seafood Cioppino is full of flavor and really delicious - I like mine on the spicy side and they always accommodate. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his duck dish & our friend had the seafood rissoto special -OMG, it was one of the best I've ever tasted - so creamy, so flavorful, so ridiculously yummy! Will definitely keep an eye out for that dish! We shared the Calamari Fritti, which is really good and not greasy or overly breaded. The best is the Olive marinate, try it!"

"Food was prepared as expected. Authentic Italian menu and preparation. Excellent taste. Atmosphere was comfortable. Service was excellent and attentive. Chairs at our table looked different (and felt less comfortable) than those we observed at other tables in the back room. Minor point. Would recommend."
