Blue Ginger, located in Wellesley, brings urban dining and sophistication to the suburbs. In celebration of its 10-year anniversary, Blue Ginger expanded with a Rockwell Group-designed renovation, creating a chic, feng-shui inspired space with three distinct dining options. Enhancements include an updated main dining room in which to savor Ming's signature East-West cuisine, three private dining rooms, and the new Lounge at Blue Ginger, complete with cozy banquettes and a 10-stool granite bar. An Asian Tapas menu is served in the Lounge, featuring casual, shareable dishes like "Ming's Bings," Ming's East-West take on the burger. "We found the menu not as focused as we would have liked; pan-Asian can be such a catch-all of spices. The food was pretty salty. But it was good. I liked the bouillabaise, but my fiance hated the taste and that it had nothing in common with a bouillabaise."

"Chef Ming Tsai never fails to delight. The black pepper lobster has been on other peoples' plates too many times and I've suffered from plate envy. This was my turn and it was ever better than anticipated. Now that I've tried the lobster, my old favorite sake-miso marinated butterfish will now have to compete for my attention. There was not a single bite among the four diners that wasn't completely satisfying. Thanks for your consistency over the years!"

"Ming Tsai is often there, sharing himself as the most gracious of hosts, making every diner feel special ... especially if you let your server know you are there for a special occasion. "Although not inexpensive, the food, the service and comfort are all worth the price. There is parking behind the resteraunt which is a little hard to find but the street parking is a little crowded. Definitely worth the trouble to visit. The chef came to our table and was very game for photos and interactions a real plus for the member of our party who sees him on TV all the time."

"everything was great except that the noise level was a bit high. Well... there is no one to blame because everyone likes to talk at the dinner table. the food was awesome not because it was something i like, but because it was a flavor that you cannot taste anywhere else - distinctive flavors that make you wonder as you enjoy... we ordered the veal chop, organic lamb, steak, and butterfish, and the veal chop was our favorite of the night. overall it's a very great place to be and I appreciated that Chef Ming was trying to meet everyone possible upon request. certainly i would like to visit once again in the future when i make more money. good job!"

"I had dinner with 3 officemates and found the food to be excellent. I ordered the rack of lamb which I thought was perfect. The others in my group tried some of the seafood fare and they enjoyed it. The service staff was excellent and very helpful. I'll definitely go back if I have the chance to do so."

"Blue Ginger's food is outstanding, no questions asked. It's a bit hard to get to, but worth the trip. The few times I've gone, I've almost always seen Ming (the chef) himself, and he is very gracious and warm. On this most recent visit, however, our waitress was pretty cold and hurried which is too bad. It doesn't defeat the entire experience, but it did detract from it."

"Blue Ginger is normally one of my favorite restaurants but it seems that following their expansion, they are pushing their capacities to unreasonable limits.

I had a reservation, but had specified the lounge would be OK since I expected the dining room would be full. In the past, I could count on at least having a table to myself in the lounge. No longer. I was seated literally in between 10 people...I had to remove their coats from my seat, they were that close. it's not reasonable to seat someone like this with an expectation that they will order food...drinks, maybe...maybe. Also, I was given a BAR menu, which was pretty much the last straw. I had a dinner reservation.

Not what I expect from BG. I balied and went to Boston instead."

"We had a wonderful lunch, with the food creatively prepared. Presentation and service were excellent, and the desert (Asian pear cranberry with cardamom ice cream) was phenomenal. All the cliches were there, including a self-important job seeker, a mother with a neurotic daughter who couldn't sleep and the ladies who go to lunch. Overall, an excellent choice for a special meal--if you tune out the locals."

"Dining at Blue Ginger is always a major treat. I have never ordered anything I didn't love! The waitress this time was not up to the same standards as all the other times we have been there. "We celebrated my husband's birthday at Blue Ginger on Saturday evening. We were seated immediately upon arrival and had excellent service throughout the evening. We enjoyed the lobster and hanger steak as our main entrees. Both melted in our mouths and were paired with amazing sauces. Our server added a birthday candle and birthday cookie to our dessert which was a nice touch. An enjoyable experience."

"My daughter and I have been fans of Chef Ming for a long time, and we happily discovered Blue Ginger was less than an hour away from Providence, where my daughter attends college. We very much enjoyed our lunch while on my recent visit to see her.
The only thing that i didn't thoroughly enjoy was the veggie burger, and not because of the taste...it was very soft, more like a filling than a burger. Very tasty, just not a burger. Don't miss the taro chips or the red bean buttercream lovely little cookie gems!"

"I had great expectations having followed Ming's TV program for some years. It was a disapointment. The visual dress up of the plates do not cover for the confusion of tastes. The dishes have too many components of not very harmonious associations. The complexity of the production impact negatively the performance. It is crowded and noisy, thus may be a succesfull suburbia restaurant. PS: The service and the dessert were great."

"This was my first time for lunch at Blue Ginger. I was shocked to learn they only had one vegetarian option on the lunch menu (even the veggie looking dishes had a fish stock in them, other than the veggie burger, which is not the type of meal I went to Blue Ginger for...). They would not make anything off the dinner menu for lunch, although they did offer to make me a veggie stir-fry, which also was not what I went to Blue Ginger for.). Finally, they offered to prepare an appetizer from the dinner menu that was good but not what I wanted. The music also was too loud. Although I may try it again for dinner, I won't do lunch there again."

"I may have the wrong pick of food of the day. My friend and I did not like what we had, I had the sword fish with fried rice, it tastes a bit sour in general. The Paella was too watery, and the rice was not well cook (too dried and hard). We also ordered the calamari and sweet potato fries as appetizer, and they were okay, very generous in portion! Overall, it's just an average experience."

"I had the rack of lamb and my friend had the signature butterfish. We sampled each other's meals and both were delicious. "Excellent restaurant to take a date, celebrate an occassion, or even impress an important work client. The food is tasty and unique. Our server was perfect, knew the menu, was prepared with recommendations and was able to talk up the menu without any hesitation. "We had the greatest dining experience ever. We were celebrating a birthday and while we were waiting for the birthday boy to arrive (who loves Ming Tsai) we noticed that Ming was there. We fixed it (with the help of Jeff who works the floor there)so Ming would deliver Sean's birthday present to him. Just before we got our desert, Ming came to the table and gave Sean his bday present and wished him a happy birthday. Ming also posed for a few photo opps and then signed Sean's birthday bag. Everyone there (from Jeff who worked the floor, to our waitress, to Ming himself) made Sean feel like it was his night which was wonderful."

"Prior to dining at Blue Ginger, I had heard from a number of friends that the food was fantastic. I had no idea the overall experience would be so amazing! It was very busy when we arrived on time for our reservation, but that did not seem to phase the hostess. She was friendly and in control of the guests the entire time. I even asked if we could sit in view of the open kitchen and she made it happen. Once seated, our server was very attentive but not intrusive. We never felt rushed or forgotten. As for the food... each course was outstanding. The presentation was beautiful and creative- it also tasted delicious. My husband and I can't wait to return! PS- It was very cool to see owner/chef Ming Tsai greeting guests and working the pass."

"My husband and I went to Blue Ginger for dinner on Valentine's Day. The hostesses were very welcoming. Our server was very knowledgeable and offered great suggestions from the delicious menu. The overall meal was fantastic. Everything from the appetizers (we had the yummy tuna poke and shrimp tempura cocktail), to the divine entrees, (Alaskan butterfish-heavenly!!! and lamb chops) right up to dessert and coffee were wonderful. "Our lunch was outstanding, as always. There is a new menu item, the potato leek soup, which I would very highly recommend. This is not like any potato leek soup you've ever tasted. "The food was outstanding and the service was very good. I think they should work on their hostess station - not very helpful. They don't make you feel very welcome as if you've somehow earned the privilege of eating there. We had to wait for our table so we went to the bar. Ordered a bottle of wine, and when our table was ready, we had to carry glasses and bottle to the table. One of those small things that help distinguish the great from the good. There was a very loud gentleman at the table of four next to us, and that ruined the atmosphere. Because tables are so close and crowded, nothing could be done."

"Everything was perfect, except the bland sesame caesar salad. 4 of us split appetizers- foie gras shumai an the poke were extraordinary. I can't order anything but the butterfish and am never disappointed. The lamb, the duck breast all perfectly cooked, flavors blending beautifully. Ming Tsai spoke to us for about 15 minutes and later brought 2 of our meals.

"Decor and ambiance tasteful and trendy. Tables are situated and balanced so you don't hear the next table's conversation. My second time around and would become a regular if I didn't live in NJ. The appetizer of beef tenderloin atop salmon was a different combination of sweet and savory. Delicious. The butterfish was crusty on top and delightfully succulent. The veal chop was tender and juicy, cooked perfectly. The wine list is extensive and our waitress was knowledgable in helping us in our selection. Service was impeccable and of course having Ming come to our table was the icing on the cake. I may have to relocate for this gem."

"This is the third time I've dined at Blue Ginger, and it's quite a trek for my wife and I, as we live in CT. But the food is worth it. We've never been disappointed with the appetizers and main course, and Ming Tsai and his staff are the rare foodsmiths that craft a menu that is both thought-provoking and fatiastically appealing. The complex and creative pairings of ingredients and world cuisines provide an emotional and intellectual as well as gustatory experience. One caveat --the desserts. Here they seem to have abnadoned their east-west fusion idea and settled on rather plebian desserts. I had the bittersweet chocolate cake. While it was delicious it was not unlike something I'd get in any run-of-the mill hotel restaurant."

"We had a rather miserable experience at Blue Ginger. We arrived at the bar at 7:30 for a drink with a 9 pm reservation. We weren't seated until 9:25 and that after asking multiple times about our table. The food was mediocre and the prices ridiculous for what they were serving. We are used to eating at high end restaurants but won't bother going back to this one. Service was slow and the staff unapologetic."

"Although I rated the food very good, as it was well prepared and presented, we found the 2 entrees we ordered "the signature dishes" good, but not spectaacular. Maybe a victim of all the hype about this place. Glad we went for a special occasion, and we happened to be in the area, but would have been disappointed at the lack of 'wow' factor on the high priced entrees. The calamari appetizer was as advertised-great-with its oil dip sauce, and the desserts were excellent.
For anyone who really loves lobster, the touted Black Pepper lobster was a major letdown-rich and tasty sauce would be better used on something that doesn't have such a wonderful flavor in its own right. Couldn't taste lobster at all-sauce totally overpowered."

"Our reservation for four included three first timers. Blue Ginger was everything I had remembered it to be and a very new and unique experience for the rest of my party. Our waitress was easily capable of handling all questions and making recommendations, including both signature dishes and recent additions. We made sure to enjoy the entire menu. Beginning with the Shiitake-Leek Springroll appetizer and salads. We then moved on to the main courses: Crispy Skin Salmon, Grilled Asian Marinated Hanger Steak, Pan Roasted Milk-Fed Veal Chop, & the Grilled North African Spiced Rack of Organic Lamb. All excellent choices. To finalize the evening the enjoyable Petit Four Plate & Ice Cream with doughnuts were savored by all. Thanks!!"

"Although we came for a special occasion, it appeared that Blue Ginger has many guests who come more frequently. This surprises us somewhat, given the limited (nay, almost unchanging menu), even if well executed. Celebrities do appear, as does Chef Ming Tsai himself--although he restricted his visits to more prominent tables than ours. No real complaints, but we emerged more blase than ever before. It may take some changes--or some elapse of time--to get us to come back again."

"The food was fabulous! Love the lettuce wraps the most. I only wish we could have eaten from the main menu in the bar area. Our server made an exception for me and brought an item from the Bar menu that wasn't on the Main menu, so they were very accommodating.
The Bar was packed, fun and very lively. Its an energetic place that is lots of fun. Decor is gorgeous in the front of the restaurant, but the back end of the dinning room seems to have fallen flat on decorating.
All in all, a really great meal and one that I will remember fondly for a long while!"

"We have not been to Blue Ginger since the expansion of the restaurant and I was a little disappointed to see that the tables for 2 were still very tight and difficult get in and out of the booth. Our food was still excellent, very enjoyable. Service was great though there was a long delay between our appetizers and our entrees. The couple next to us who were seated after us were already done with dinner and we were just looking around for our server. The host station did see the note that it was my birthday and gave me well wishes as well as passing along the info to the waitstaff who slipped a cookie with a handwritten "happy birthday" onto our dessert which was nice."

"IMO, they would be better off following the "less is more" rule. Fried calamari app was very good.Proteins in the main courses (one veal chop,one shrimp) were excellent. However, there was just TOO much going on on one plate. The flavors almost didn't work together, and made for some odd textures.
My biggest complaint was the dessert menu, mostly for the kids, but for the adults as well. I like intersting flavors,but SPICE just doesn't work in dessert.If you're a fan of items like ginger ice-cream,this place is for you...i don't know, maybe my palate isn't sophisticated enough..lol. The worst was the kids' dessert menu, containing cardamom cookies and ice-cream,and spiced cookies. Why bother w/the pretense of a "kids' menu?"

"Given the New York prices for dinner(even for Wellesley, MA), not New York quality food. Dinner entrees ranged from really good to really mediocre. Collectively, appetizers were much better as a group.

Since we drove an hour and a half just to eat there, collectively (six of us) were disappointed.

Chef Ming was in NY for "The Today Show," but doubt if that made much of a difference.

New bar was terrific. Bartender was really nice, letting us "taste" one of the sakis before actually ordering it."

"Everything was impeccable. The food is really ellaborate. Everything that we tried (veal chop, butternut fish, plus the tuna and carpaccio appetizers) was very tasty witha lot ingredients that didn's really stand out on its own but as a whole. My veal was cooked to pefection. The tuna appetizer had one of the most sensational flavors that I've tried. The portions were great too.

The only thing that wasn't so great is the wine that I tried which was the house Merlot. I probably should've gone for the Cabernet."

"Frankly, it was a little disappointing. It wasn't very Asian, it was overpriced, and the food was just ok at best. Most items were over-salted. "Maybe because it was a Monday evening, but I thought Blue Ginger came down a notch from the what we usually get. Since we live on the Cape, we only get to go to BG two or three times a year, normally on special occasions. This time it was to celebrate my daughter's birthday (she was visiting for the holidays from Charlotte, NC). While I thought everything was very good this visit, we didn't walk out wowed with what we had just experienced. It has been so good for so long at BG that I hope this time was just an off night not a permanent change."

"The reason we went to Blue Ginger was because it was my birthday. I love going to this restaurant and always have a fabulous meal. Our server was one of the best I've/we've ever had. She let us linger and truly enjoy ourselves. We actually drove up to Massachusetts frm Connecticut to have dinner at this wonderful restaurant. I was only sorry that Ming Tsai wasn't at the restaurant. About 7 years ago he was in his restaurant and took a picture with my then, 2 year old son, Luca. To this day, we have it framed."

"The food was very good, but the service was very poor. Our orders came very late Fortunately or unfortunately we had stuffed ourselves with bread (two orders). I am not sure that is a good thing, but we averted hunger pangs!!!

"Every few years someone ropes me into going to Wellesley to Blue Ginger. And every time a swear I will never go back. This is an amateurish restuarant masquerading as a place for fine dining. "We had been trying to get Blue Ginger for along time with our good friends...our schedules finally meshed and it was well worth the wait! The food was fabulous and our server made our dining experience even better. Her knowledge of the menu, suggestions for food and her overall attitude was refreshing.

Something else that impressed us was that I recently had foot surgery and had some restrictions to my mobilty. The staff was wonderful and made me feel "at home" and not a burden."

"My fiancee and I celebrated our anniversary at Blue Ginger over the weekend. The food was delicious and very creative. My fiancee had the Thai noodles with coconut crusted jumbo shrimp... simply amazing! And my entree was the steak with hoisin and tamarind sauce, also great. We went on a Saturday night, so it was very busy and a bit noisy (there was a large party sitting next to us and they were quite animated). But overall, we had a great time and would go back to celebrate another special occasion. Our waitress was great, checked on us often, and was extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine/beverage selection. Truly a must-try if you've never been there!"

"I rarely get down to Wellesley area, evidenced by my desire to get to Blue Ginger for at least five years (used to work close by), but it was definitely worth the trip last week. Urban atmosphere in the suburbs, nice ambient lighting, lively atmosphere (at lunch), great cocktails and fusion menu with delicious seafood, salads, even gourmet mini burgers on the lunch menu, all delivered by friendly & efficient staff. I would highly recommend Blue Ginger and look forward to returning for dinner. Great place, Ming and Company!"

"One can rate the meal compare to tastes and what you cook for yourself when you try hard and use best ingredients, and then there's the rating normalized by the menu price. I rated the food fair from the value/price point of view, actually somewhat lower, though not quite poor. Two of our party had the shrimp in three vinegar sauce, basically just a brown salty mess, just a hint of color by way of some asparagus. I had the curry with shrimp, another big mess to look at, though the overall flavor and shrimp were pleasing; I was hoping to see and eat less-mushy greyed-out veggies. One of us had the "butterfish", which we all tried and liked, and presentation was attractive. Spring roll good, mushroom soup more brown salt."

"It was amazing! I had always wanted to go there, and it was definitely well worth the hype. We had the spring rolls which were delicious. I had the lamb, which was wonderful. My dining partner had the shrimp which was very tasty. It's one of the more pricey restaurants in the area, but well worth it! And Ming Tsai was there and he was the nicest most charming guy. He was kind enough to sign a cookbook for me that I bought there. As wonderful as some amazing restaurants I love in the Boston area."

"Since this is a Ming Tsai restaurant, I will be somewhat picky. I am a great fan of his food and had not been to Blue Ginger for awhile; so I was looking forward to it. Although the food was quite good, I was disappointed since it was not exceptional. My wife's springroll plate was a bit of a mess and the springrolls were an unappetizing monomorphous brown. My poke was good but the flavors were not exciting. Our main courses were fine. Sake was served in large wine glasses, which makes it warm up too fast. Investment in some good sake glasses would be good. Having just had some very good sake in Japan, I was disappointed. The seats were uncomfortable. Service could have been more attentive and less full of herself - too pretentious."

"A dinner at Blue Ginger is a "dining experience" at its best. As above rated, everything about it was outstanding. We had in our party a strict vegetarian and one who cannot eat gluten. The staff was very helpful and supportive to make sure EVERYBODY in our party received the necessary considerations. "We expected to have a great lunch and we did for the most part. Laurie, our server, was very attentive and accommodating. After pointing out signature dishes, as this was our first time, and unsure of which wines went best with our selections, she presented us with a tasting of four wines that she recommended. Our starter, leek spring rolls, was artfully presented, flavorful and fun, but slightly overcooked. The butter fish was exceptional, while the paella, addictive and enormous, could have used just a touch of heat. Our dessert, sadly too full to order any, was seeing Ming himself in the open kitchen. It was such a pleasure to see a hands on celeb chef. We look forward to another enjoyable meal here when visiting the MA area."

"We took an out-of-town guest and really impressed her with the wonderful combination of great food and unpretentious ambiance. The service is efficient and unobtrusive.

The expansion of Blue Ginger makes it more possible to get a reservation where in the past you had to book weeks in advance.

"We went to this place with very high expectations. The food fell way short on this and we and three of the four items we ordered were considered their "signature" dishes. The Mushroom rolls were bland and gross, the calamari was nothing to rave on and the two fish dishes were average at best. The only good part of our meal was the wine.
