Blue Ginger, located in Wellesley, brings urban dining and sophistication to the suburbs. In celebration of its 10-year anniversary, Blue Ginger expanded with a Rockwell Group-designed renovation, creating a chic, feng-shui inspired space with three distinct dining options. Enhancements include an updated main dining room in which to savor Ming's signature East-West cuisine, three private dining rooms, and the new Lounge at Blue Ginger, complete with cozy banquettes and a 10-stool granite bar. An Asian Tapas menu is served in the Lounge, featuring casual, shareable dishes like "Ming's Bings," Ming's East-West take on the burger. "We went to this place with very high expectations. The food fell way short on this and we and three of the four items we ordered were considered their "signature" dishes. The Mushroom rolls were bland and gross, the calamari was nothing to rave on and the two fish dishes were average at best. The only good part of our meal was the wine.

"The Blue Ginger is definitely worth going to. The service is excellent and the food has both a beautiful presentation and superb flavor. There are a few things to note, however: The first is the fried calamari appetizer which, compared to most other items on the menu, surprisingly lacks flavor. I've had much better calamari at pub-style restaurants. The second item to note is the $8 petite four dessert. This was $8 for 8 tiny sweets, 4 of which were cookies no bigger than my pinky finger that I could have purchased at my local supermarket, and that other restaurants serve you complimentary when you order a cappuccino! In my opinion, BG struck out with these 2 menu items."

"Been a huge fan of Ming's through his television personal and own a couple of his books. Creative, well thought food and I look to his ideas for inspiration when in need.

The staff was prompt and friendly. The restaurant sparkled and has a great design

The food, or maybe the execution of, didn't live up though

Shiitake soup: Salty and soggy 'crisp' veggie cake
Mussels: out of this world
Rack of lamb: Small 3 bone portion, meat and sauce on plate cold, but flavorful
Lobster in Black Pepper: Lobster lost in all the heat
Cheese platter was great
$88 for a bottle of Shafer good deal

"Food was excellent with a wide variety of offerings at lunch. Light hand on the tiller, and food came quickly and hot. Only downside was overly-persistent waitstaff who pushed the highest-priced items on the menu, and wouldn't give us sufficient time to decide. They returned to the table every 2 minutes despite being told we needed some time, and we'd ask them as soon as we were ready."

"I've been here over 6 times, and have found the food to be consistently very good, while the service remains consistently hit or miss. This time was a miss, as there was no doubt our server was trying hard to turn our table. But the food brings me back."

"This was my second experience at Blue Ginger and call me a minority, but I am just not wowed! Six of us dined and we enjoyed our meal, but no one was ready to scream... OMG, you have to taste this....! We were also seated in the back dining area which is just bleak, you miss the experience of viewing the working kitchen, the experience! Our server was terrific; attentive and helpful. This is expensive dining and I think Ming has to revisit and bring back the WOW factor!"

"I had been looking forward to dining at Blue Ginger for many years. Finally when I found myself in the Boston area for Halloween weekend for work, I immediately made a reservation there. I took my step daughter, a college student, and we had the best time. I am familiar with the cuisine and Ming Tsai, however, my step daughter can be a bit finicky. She loved the leek mushroom spring roll and the Curry Pasta. It was the best noodle dish she ever had. As for myself, I relished in the fact that I was finally dining at Blue Ginger, after reading about Ming, cooking from his books and watching him on TV for years. Thank you for a wonderful evening of conversation stopping food!!!"

"We're huge fans of Ming and love his show, "Simply Ming". We live in Providence and had been wanting to drive up to Wellesley to check out Blue Ginger for some time. We had just received good news that my fiance has passed one of his Board exams, so we decided that Blue Ginger would be a great way to celebrate. The experience was wonderful! "Phenomenal experience & the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. We were stressed & running a few minutes late for our reservation but the friendly staff immediately put us at ease. The setting is relaxing, and while there are quite a few tables, the layout & acoustics are such that you are able to enjoy an intimate meal. Our waiter was helpful & friendly & the wait staff struck the perfect balance of being very attentive without being intrusive; we were told both at the start & the end of the meal that there was no rush & to just enjoy. Every dish was pitch-perfect: foie gras shumai & tuna poke apps, 5-spice duck breast & crispy skin salmon entrees, cardamon ice cream/bittersweet chocolate cake and creme brulee desserts. Divine!"

"The service was unbelievable, the tables where to close together. My dish was fantastic, steak was cooked perfectly and the empenada was superb all topped off with an avocado sauce. "The restaurant is modern in style and seemed quite popular. The menu is filled with interesting and unique combinations of flavors from the cocktails and appetizers to the entrees. We tried two cocktails, signature appetizers. One of us has the signature Alaskan Butterfish, the other a small game hen. Perhaps our palates are not sophisticated enough, but everything we ate and drank tasted just OK. Nothing we would order a second time."

"We live nearby and this happened to be our 40th anniversary. Sisters from Louisiana and Ohio were at the next table and had planned for this visit for a year, having watched PBS. Ming Tsai came to their table at the end of the meal and thanked them for coming. He chatted for a while and made their vacation even more special. Of course, their dinners and ours were fabulous."

"My wife & I were there for a birthday dinner. We had delicious ginger martinis with excellent calamari to start. Entrees of Sake-Miso Marinated Alaskan Butterfish and the Garlic-Black Pepper Lobster were sensational! These are our favorites and we have them on every visit. For dessert we chose the Sesame Macadamia Caramel Nut Tart with Toasted Coconut Ice Cream and Housemade Hot Fudge and Gosling’s Rum Caramel Bananas. Ming Tsai came to the table with a happy birthday wish & we had a nice chat. Our waitress was superb and this was an outstanding dining experience."

"We had a wonderful meal at Blue Ginger Wednesday night. Food (duck breast and Butterfish; cranberry tart; salad and mushroom appetizers) was delicious. "This was our first time to Blue Ginger and we had very high expectations due to all the reviews we had read. From the moment we arrived, all those expectations were exceeded. Parking was conveniently located. The restaurant was very clean and the decor was tasteful and soothing. The service was friendly, well-timed and efficient. The food, most notably the Butterfish, was outstanding. And Ming Tsai was wonderfully kind and gracious.

We are extremely pleased with our experience (which was the highlight of our vacation) and will definitely be returning as soon as possible."

"We loved our meal...we sampled the chef's tasting menu of 5 chef-selected dishes. All of them were outstanding with the exception of a steak and lobster dish. The steak was lovely, the lobster divine... the sauce was... salty?!? Too salty to eat and I love salt! However, the Hawaiian Tuna Poke and grilled Butterfish dishes made up for it! So aside from the salt blip, we had a memorable dinner in a gorgeous restaurant."

"Dinner at Blue Ginger was the highlight of my birthday celebration. The waiter described the menu items and made everything sound wonderful. The butterfish was cooked perfectly, flaky and moist. "We were there right at 5:30. It was almost empty yet they gave us a table that was right in front of where the staff was having some kind of a meeting, which was distracting and unwelcoming. The waitress never smiled, had a snobbish attitude and went down the "list" of menu without any regard whether we understood or not, obviously just reciting from memorization without any understanding of food served. We actually picked an entree and appetizer she recommended. The entree was excellent but the appetizer was mediocre. I think the food was worth the money, but who wants to pay so much for dinner if the atmosphere, table location and service is so poor? I made a reservation to celebrate the anniversary and stayed there barely an hour."

"The matradee was very nice and greeted us at the door. We were quickly seated in the corner. It seemed really tight, so good thing I'm skinny. The waiter came over and didn't even tell us his name, just mumbled something with his french accent and asked if we could wait for bread service. We did not have time to look at the cocktail list before he was asking us what we wanted. There was no music just people talking really loud. The waiter explained the menu somewhat, but the busboy was more helpful. He actually explained how we should eat our spring roll appetizer. The food was very good. I had the lamb with massaman sauce. The portions were small enough that you can finish the whole thing. The bar makes strong drinks."

"I have been to Blue Ginger at least 15 times over the last few years.
Now that we have moved to California, the visits are less frequent.
I was surprised this time to find many of the dishes to be extremely salty. We had 2 appetizers and 4 different entrees. The only entree that tasted as good as I remember it was the black cod.
Service was still top notch and their expansion makes getting a reservation more reasonable. I would still recommend the restaurant."

"My wife and I had heard of the Blue Ginger when we were living in Providence a few years ago. We now live in Newton and were eager to visit. The food was spectacularly delicious. Our server was routinely adequate, but polite and very attentive--perhaps we were mistaken in presuming to get a more fine-dining experience; the atmosphere was more like a bistro. The Saturday night we were there was busy and "buzzy", the sort of energetic ambiance which we like at a restaurant. Full dinner from seating to dessert was a quick 90 minutes, with no unusual delays. An overall very good experience. We will certainly be back and will recommend it highly. Make reservations!"

"Dining experience was excellent. We had reservations, but I'm a baseball fan and there was a playoff game on TV, so we decided to dine at the bar. The bartender was top-notch. He let us order from the main dining room menu, and was very helpful with the food selections and wine pairings. I had the Butterfish, since I had read rave reviews on-line - it turned out to be some of the best fish I'd ever tasted. The crab rangoons we had for an appetizer were unlike any I've ever had - nothing but real crabmeat. Even the gimlet I had before dinner was exceptional. Overall a 5-star experience!"

"Times were that I'd dream about meals at Blue Ginger. The unique mingling of tastes and textures that characterized the neo-Asian dishes was well worth the traffic up route 9 and across route 16. However, this last visit left me feeling like I didn't really need to go back. Signature dishes like the mushroom spring rolls are almost unrecognizable -- overfilled, not as flavorful. What would be a fantastic smoked salmon and beef carpaccio is so laden in the center with stuff that you lose the salmon entirely and the delicate beef is overwhelmed. Other dishes were typically very good, but over-sauced. These are still really good recipes in capable hands, but it's no longer the stuff of dreams."

"Wonderful Dining Experience ... on a recent Sunday evening! We live in Maryland, and have been trying for years to work Blue Ginger into our schedule. This was our first visit. As Foodies who have worked in the industry, we were very pleased. Someone in a previous review had recommended Megan, so we reserved a table requesting Megan. Megan is The Best! She even "humored us" and went on a quest to answer all of our questions. Do you know what the MA State bird is? The service was impeccable. We highly recommend the Calamari, Gazpacho, Lobster and Chocolate Cake. The Crispy Skin Salmon was delicious, but we did not care for the wetness of the clam corn broth with risotto, so we removed the salmon and had the broth like soup."

"We were, quite honestly, disappointed. Blue Ginger has gotten so much hype but the food was definitely a little ho-hum. The fried calamari appetizer, a "signature dish" had breading that was nice and light, but the calamari were so small as to be overwhelmed even by that light breading. My husband had the duck as an entree:"good, but nothing special"; I had the salmon, which was just not that memorable. We had been given a gift card to the restaurant and we agreed that if we had had to pay the very high prices (each entree was $35+) ourselves, we would have been even more unhappy. Table service was excellent, but we waited half an hour after our reservation time for a table. Room was VERY noisy and the wine list just uninspired."

"I requested a table along the back wall in the first dining room opposite the kitchen. I told the hostess on the phone that it was a birthday and that if we couldn't get a table along that back wall anywhere in that dining room would be great. Our reso was @ 6:15pm and unfortunately the traffic was heavy. I called at 6:10 and explained we wouldn't arrive until 6:30. We didn't get there until 6:40pm. She took us to the very last table in the back of the restaurant. I asked her for something in the main dining area and she said "Since you were late this is what's available. I'll check and see if anything else is open". The restaurant was 25% full. I was angry and it started off the night on a bad note."

"Celebrated anniversary friday night 9pm seating. We had to wait a few minutes for our table but every so often a different staff member would check up on us attentively and wish us a happy anniversary. Tea-smoked carpaccio & calamari were excellent appetizers. Crispy salmon in a summer vegetable broth topped with crispy clams was very good especially the broth which was outstanding. Hangar steak with tomatillo sauce and avocado cream was excellent and cooked to perfection. Chehalem pinot noir paired wonderfully with both. Sesame macadamia nut tart was a perfect finish. We've been here many times and except for the previous two visits which were a little disappointing, we've been very pleased and will continue to frequent this establishment."

"Overall the food and atmosphere was great. However out the 4 appetizer and 3 entree's our party tried. There were two dishes worth mentioning. For appetizer the Foie Gras-Shiitake Shumai in Sauternes-Shallot Broth one must definite try this rich and flavorable creation.
As for entree the Sake-Miso Marinated Alaskan Butterfish was flawless and amazingly good.

We were however was a little disappointed in the Lobster. It was cooked perfectly but the sauce was a bit salty and strong which overpowered the Lobster natural taste. Absoultey a must go to place. Ming was charming and humble fella."

Of course the view is a funeral home, but that means it is a quiet place, right?

"The Blue Ginger has been on our wish list for many years. We finally made it to Boston to get there. While it was an adventure driving to find it, we were not disappointed. The blending of the food and spices and flavors was amazing. My husband had the Shiitake-Leek Springrolls with Three Chile Dipping Sauce for an appetizer and the Mom’s Famous Three Vinegar Sautéed Organic Shrimp. His tip is to be sure to roll up a piece of the mint in the spring roll which finishes the infused flavors together with the chile dipping sauce. Definitely a worthy of a repeat"

"I've been to dinner here several times and the food is always wonderful. Saturday's visit was exceptional in this regard, but this time, the service was spotty. There was an unacceptable delay between placing our order and getting our first course. Eventually, I asked the waitress "why?" and she said that the kitchen was backed up by the order from a large party. I good excuse--but my first course was Asian Gazpacho. Seems like someone could have shown some initiative and found a ladle ;-).
Only other complain was the ventilation seemed to be not working correcty. I sat with my back to the prep area--but at least 20 feet away from it. When I got home, I smelled like I'd been working in the prep area!"

"I'm sad not to have loved this place. The food was very good, but for the price I guess I expected just a little bit more. I took my wife here for dinner on her birthday, we've been dying to try it out for over a year. Took WAY too long to get a drink, I was stunned. The restaurant is LOUD and the tables are on top of each other, which shouldn't have surprised me after reading reviews on the web, but I was a little turned off from the get-go.

Food was spot on for the apps and the entrees (shiitake-leek spring rolls, calamari, chile 5 spice duck, and crispy striped bass), but really not that happy with the dessert, we ordered strawberry shortcake. It was difficult to eat, and flavors were weak ... just left me feeling a little disappointe"

"We have never had a bad experience at Blue Ginger. Everything was superb, although I'll admit I always have their signature butterfish and wonderful accompaniments so I haven't ventured throughout the menu. Their spring rolls are also a must have to start! Ming and Polly continue to show their deep appreciation for fine dining, excellent and unique ingredients, talented chefs, personable waitstaff and dedication to ensuring a wonderful experience. "I went on a Wednesday for my birthday dinner, and the restaurant was pretty much full of energetic, jovial customers. I had the tasting menu with wine pairing, and the food and wine combination were excellent. Also, the waitress made great subtle efforts to make my birthday dinner feel special. Personally, I would like the noise level to tone down slightly, but I guess I can't really complain about the liveliness within the restaurant since I also appreciated the fact that the restaurant's relaxed casual dress code made me much more at ease than some of the other higher-end restaurants."

"This was my third visit to Blue Ginger. The visual presentation of the food was great and it tastes good. I ordered a salmon dish, which was a little too salty. One of the party pack the leftover chicken dish, which was also quite salty when I tasted it later. There was a significant delay in serving the main dish, though the restaurant was not busy as it was a little late for the meal. The waiter apologized for it, but it happened again when we ordered a glass of wine later. Don't know why."

"The high ex[pectations that we had for Blue Ginger were not met. House special spring rolls were bland and messy to eat. Shumai was terrible. We eat shumai all the time and this was almost unedible. Ficve spice duck was tough. Rack of lamb cooked perfectly but the spice combination and sauce were not pleasing. Deserts are somewhat mundane. Kitchen was extremely slow. "Wow. I went to Blue Ginger with VERY high expectations, an was slightly worried that I would be disappointed. I am in the restaurant business, and a dining junkie... I was visiting New England on a trip with my wife an we made it a point to try Blue Ginger, as I've been a fan of Ming Tsai for years. I can't think of a meal I've enjoyed more in my entire life. Truly stunning food. We had a little 2-top in the back, certainly an unremarkable table, yet the service was flawless and the food was breathtaking. I'll gladly trade any "romantic view" for the best fish I've ever eaten. (The Alaskan Butterfish, recommended by our server, was unforgettable.)"

"Ming Tsai came over to the table to greet us, which was the highlight of the dinner really, apart from the food. The food is delicate, clean, fresh, and you can eat and eat and roll out stuff, but the next morning, you do not feel like you overindulged. Maybe that goes to the quality of the food and the way it is prepared. I have been there several times with groups and we share from each others plates to taste and I have never been disappointed with anything that I have tasted! That said, Blue Ginger exceeded my high expectations; really was one of the 10 best meals I can remember. "This was the second time my wife and I attended Blue Ginger. Our first dining experience was delightful as the food was outstanding and the service was first class. Unfortunatley the latter was not the case this time. It took at least 10 minutes for our waiter to take our drink order. It then took another 10 minutes to reeceive our drinks. While waiting for our drinks, I observed the two tables next to us. Both couples were seated around the same time as us and neither group had been waited on. We were seated at 8:45 and did not leave the restaurant until 11:30. I do enjoy a relaxing dinner were you can savor each course but this was definitely not the case here. Hopefully the service was an abberation...."

"I had a very disappointing dinner at Bue Ginger -- with very poor service, arrogance, topped off with a mediocre meal. We had a reservation for 8pm with some out-of-town guests. When we arrive the desk indicated that everything ws running 10 minutes late. We went to the bar and at 8.30 no one had even updated us on the status of our table. I approached the front desk at 8.40 and was told that "Ming" was readying a table and that there was nothing that they could do to have avoided. In the meantime, we had ordered an appetizer. We finally got seated at 8.45 and Ming brought over the same appetizer we had just eaten at the bar - this was an insult as he did not even take the time to find that out. I mentione, and he rudely snapped back"

"The only negative we experienced is when we first arrived. The maitre d' greeted us with "Oh, you're late". We were indeed 5 minutes late, but not the greeting we would have expected. He then told us "any other night, we would have cancelled your reservation - But, we can seat you now." I turned around, and the place was 3/4 empty. I thought it was not a positive way to begin our evening. Once we were seated, things turned around for the better - Excellent food and service. But, the first 10 minutes of our dinner was spent discussing the maitre d's comment."
