Blue Ginger, located in Wellesley, brings urban dining and sophistication to the suburbs. In celebration of its 10-year anniversary, Blue Ginger expanded with a Rockwell Group-designed renovation, creating a chic, feng-shui inspired space with three distinct dining options. Enhancements include an updated main dining room in which to savor Ming's signature East-West cuisine, three private dining rooms, and the new Lounge at Blue Ginger, complete with cozy banquettes and a 10-stool granite bar. An Asian Tapas menu is served in the Lounge, featuring casual, shareable dishes like "Ming's Bings," Ming's East-West take on the burger. "Food was moderate considering the price - Not sure the cross-over style fully works when you have light flavored food and strong sauces. We had the salmon and ths lamb - bth were overpowered and that is hard to do with lamb."

"This is a perennial favorite. Ming Tsai is genius, and each time we visit, we come away with new taste memories imprinted. Not only are his plates well-balanced in terms of both taste and texture, they are beautiful to behold without putting your eye out. Ming's palate is extraordinary, and we appreciate his classic sensibilities and feel that it is this level of craft which sets his food above others who never quite master the reinvention of pan-asian tastes. The drinks menu is smart, and the wine list shows surprising range for its trim size, and the prices are reasonable. This restaurant is an excellent value, and care is taken at each point on the dining experience. Downside is the tremendous noise, and on our last visit, smoke."

"Not only was our food totally fantastic but the service was incredibly quick and gracious!! I also appreciate NOT being rushed out and even when the restaurant is full, it doesn't feel cramped or loud like some places. That kind of atmosphere makes the food even more enjoyable. "The experience did not live up to the expectation. Service was very uneven with long periods of time between visits from servers. The food presentation was excellent, but too much salt in the sauces. Our server had a problem opening the wine, but replaced the bottle with a new one which should have been decanted and wasn't. The wine had a lot of sediment which was dumped into our glasses at the end of the bottle, even tho I attempted to stop her. It was a slow night, no excuse for the slow and uneven service.

Won't be back. Very disappointing. Where are you Ming?"

"I was most appreciative of my waitress' concerns re: my allergies which would have knocked out most of the offerings (no soy or other fermented sauces, no mushrooms), but she worked with me to make a change to the wonderful pea soup. "First-time diner at Blue Ginger. Loved the tasting menu - most especially the butterfish and the lobster/steak. Dessert was so-so but I was full from the 4 courses, which were delicious. "This was not my first visit to Blue Ginger, and although the restaurant deserves its popularity, I think it is rated more highly than it should be. As a result of Ming Tsai's celebrity, I think his restaurant has become to some extent complacent and not as attentive to detail as it should be for these prices. The food was delicious and beautifully presented but the service was was uneven and the wine list somewhat uninspired. I have read that when Ming Tsai is in the house, everything is kicked up a notch; I would loved for him to have been there the night we dined at Blue Ginger."

"I've been waiting years to eat at this restaurant, and it certainly did not disappoint. Everything was outstanding, from the service to the ambiance to the food. I sampled each of the dishes ordered by my party, and each one was incredibly creative, well-presented, and absolutely delicious. The appetizers and desserts were wonderful as well. "My wife and I loved our first experience at Blue Ginger! The food was outstanding - the butter fish was particularly delicious - and the service was extremely attentive.
It's certainly not cheap, though: our tab came to $225 for everything. This included two appetizers (steak and salmon carpacio, tuna tartare), two main dishes (salmon and butterfish), and half a bottle of pinot blanc. So it's definitely on the expensive end of metro Boston dining, but we'll definitely return to celebrate a special occasion or to spoil visiting friends."

"We had high expectations for Blue Ginger which were not met. The service was just OK - including the waitress taking away the wine menu when we said that we didn't want a drink before the meal. (Isn't one allowed to order wine WITH dinner?) We tried two of their "signature" dishes: the lobster and the butterfish. The menu said that "all the work is done for you" on the lobster, but my husband had to fight with the shell to get at the meat. He also found bits of shell in the rice portion of the dish which made it difficult to eat. The butterfish just wasn't anything special. In the end, we thought the entire meal was exceedingly overpriced for what we got. We won't go back there any time soon."

"Blue Ginger is a good restaurant but not excellent as I heard. We thought that the food was fine but it was over-priced in our opinion. Maybe we were expecting more because of the hype.

They were aware of their ingredients and catered to food allergies which was very nice. Our waitress did a good job and timed the food to arrive correctly but took the check before we got up to leave, little tacky.

Overall, it was worth a try but probably not a second visit."

"It was an absolute wonderful night. We took my brother and his wife for dinner the other night.....a Monday night...and it was a perfect evening. I suggest going on a weeknight. The only other time we went to Blue Ginger was on a weekend night (Fri or Sat, can't remember) and although the food was fantastic, the experience/ambiance was rushed. "This was my third visit to BG and my first for lunch. My previous experiences (dinner and an event) were better. I would rate the food for those as excellent. The dish I chose, salmon with a wasabi crust, may not have been the best choice. The fish was a little too oily and over cooked for my taste (I should have ordered medium). The staff, however, were wonderful. The waiter was very knowledgeable and I should have gone with his recommendations. My bad. The coffee was very bitter. I was here to celebrate a friend's birthday and even though we didn't order dessert, she was given a plate of delicious cookies one with Happy Birthday written on it. I will return order the Butterfish!"

"After watching Ming Tsai's cooking shows on TV for several years, my wife and I had always wanted to visit Blue Ginger and last Friday for lunch was our first. "Fairly good food well-presented, but not of spectacular quality. "Asian-lacquered poussin" was dry, and v. difficult to cut from the bone (no steak knife offered). Pre-dinner cocktail (vodka & tonic) was mostly ice and tonic.

Noise level unacceptable. Tiled floor didn't help (esp. when nearby toddler dropped cutlery, to spectacular effect). For a special-occasion dinner (spouse's birthday) with advance reservations noting same, I hoped for better than a tiny table in a loud, overcrowded room directly next to an aisle w/waiters constantly whizzing by (and my chair jammed against a nearby diner).

Overall, this was a disappointing experience and did not live up to high expectations based on hype re Ming Tsai's reputation. Will not return"

"We love the ambiance and vibe of the restaurant. It was great to see the Chef himself making his rounds in the dining room. Unfortunately, he should keep up with his cooks because we were served two entrees that were extremely salty (lobster fried rice & curry noodles). It was almost unediable. For the price we paid for the entrees it was very disappointing. Our waitress didn't come around to check up on the plates early enough so we never got a chance to comment on them. On the up-side, the appertizers were really good and the menu was inventive and interesting enough for us to make a 5 hour drive up there. Otherall, it was a good experience to visit a celebrity chef restaurant but it is not worth it to go back again."

"Went on line to look at menu and decide what we wanted to eat.We arrived at Blue Ginger and were promptly seated.The waitress handed us our menus ,took our drink order and explained about the multi-course meals options.We were shocked and disappointed,to see that the menu was not the same as on line.(The entrees we were most interested in were no longer available).We made other selections and had a great meal.The service was terrific!and the food was outstanding(as usual).(try the pork loin with pork belly)Go early,if you wait until later in the evening,it can get crowded and very noisy .(the tables are too close together and you can't carry on a private conversation).We will go back again again next year."

"A 5:30 Reservation was the only one available on June1,2009. This was a very difficult time for our party to meet. I called twice on June 1,to see if a later reservation might be available and was told no. All the tables around us were empty until 7:30pm, party felt this was outrageous. We also had a party of 6. 4 of us had two mixed drinks at the table. When one of the members of our party asked for another mixed drink,the server told us our table was shut off due to the fact that each of us had two drinks. If the Blue Ginger is going to impose a drinking limit(i have no problem with that) they should identify that on there Web page so patrons know this and can avoid being embarrassed."

"After hearing so much about Blue Ginger, my husband and I were very excited to try out the restaurant. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. We were sort of squished in between the tables, and felt rushed. Our reservation was for 6:45 p.m. We arrived a few minutes early, was seated immediately. Our waitress Megan came and served us right away. Food was okay. The dip for the calamari was a bit too salty. I had rice paper wrapped salmon, and my husband had grilled blue fish. All in all, I think there are better ways to spend my hard earned dollars."

"Blue Ginger's food was excellent, although figuring out what the actual dish was under all the descriptive elements was challenging. Service started out well, but went downhill once dinner was served. Once the crowd began to build (and it wasn't yet full), noise level was distracting. "This was my 2nd visit to Blue Ginger and my husband's first. Our waitress, coincidentally the same one I had on my first visit, was excellent: knowledgable, attentive and friendly yet not cloying. We started with a shared appetizer, the spring rolls. They are accompanied by lettuce leaves and a spicy cole slaw both of which are wrapped about the roll and then dipped in a spicy 3 chili sauce. A bit messy, but delicious. My entree was the 3 vinegar sauteed shrimp. The portion was perfectly-sized and the shrimp grilled perfectly. The garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus were a great accompaniment. There was a bit too much sauce. My husband enjoyed the Sake-Miso Marinated Alaskan Butterfish. It was delicate and tasty."

"The butterfish was probably the best fish entree i have ever had in my life. The salmon wrapped in something with risotto was good, but not great. appetizers of mussells were good, not great, calamari wasnt even good. at $65 a person with only 3 drinks total, not sure if I would go back for anything except the butter fish - service was attentive and solid - pacing was good, the waiter was still attentive even after he realized we werent going to be ordering a tasting menu or a $400 bottle of wine, which isnt always the case at high end places."

"We had been there many years ago, soon after it opened, and found it pretentious and with some attitude, so I stayed away for many years. But, we finally decided to try again.
To say as an understatement, I'm glad we did.
I'm happy to say that everything was superb! Fron the smiling, courteous hostesses to our friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and efficient server, all the personnel were terrific.
And the food was great! A flavorful blend of "east meets west" that we hope to enjoy again before too long.

"I've eaten at this restaurant many times in its ten years of operating in Wellesley. I used to crave the charred-sweet flavor of the sake-miso butterfish. I now try other items on the menu. I'm not usually a dessert eater, but Ming's sense of flavor is especially wonderful in his desserts. But honestly, a menu updating would be nice. (To that end, I now prefer the bar, with its small plates, over the dining area).
I think what I appreciate most about the Blue Ginger, over the long haul, it the sensitivity of Ming Tsai--his presence in the dining room, his willingness adjust orders to allergy needs, the attentiveness of the wait staff. (Once, he even gave one hour to my 12-year-old son, who interviewed him for a school project!)."

"Frankly the lunch dishes at my table were weird--combinations of foods & cuisines (Thai, Portugese, very little true Chinese) that don't make sense together. The noodles with shrimp had a curry sauce that was positively dry & drying (hairy lemongrass didn't help), and my friends got the paella with too much red (tomato) sauce, drowning out the seafood flavor. Appetizers were the spring roll (too bitter & just not good, never mind awkward & messy to eat) & sweet potato fries that were the tastiest item we had. Even my green tea wasn't high quality--all around disappointing. Big name, but no one home minding the store. I'm tired of "famous" chefs...."

"We have beeen trying to get into Blue Ginger for quite a while and had high expectations. The food was okay but not worthy of the high prices. "Our dining experience was mixed. My husband loved it. He is a foodie, and thought the food was fantastic. I, on the other hand, was not impressed. I am allergic to seafood (and give them STELLAR marks for accommodating my allergy - they were awesome). The non-seafood options were rather dull, and my meal, the lamb, did not have a lot of flavor. The meat was cooked with skill, it was juicy, but it was not particularly interesting or flavorful.

If you love seafood, Blue Ginger is an excellent choice. But if there is a non-seafood eater in your party, consider another place.

Again, however, kudos for their care in dealing with my allergy. I wish other restaurants were as accommodating."

"The food was beyond excellent. However the layout of the tables in the main room is not optimal. The tables along the wall are organzied such that some face the wall and the others face outward providing two very different dining experiences. Wait staff were very knowledgeable about the menu items. Pricey but worth it and I will definitely return."
