29 South is a chic, neighborhood bistro perfect for dates, a quick bite or a casual dinner with old friends and family. This eclectic bistro has it all; great ambiance, fantastic food, an extensive wine list. The menu can best be described as extraordinary casual farm to table cuisine, where Chef Scott Schwartz paints a playground for the palette using the freshest ingredients sourced from local fisherman, farms and our own onsite garden. Three time winner of the "Best of Jacksonville" 29 South was recently awarded a "Snail of Approval" and "Spirit of Slow Food" by Slow Food USA.
"Great food, atmosphere and service. I had the brook trout and endive and my husband had the fried chicken. Both excellent. Lemon tart was to die for!"

"Love this place for it's ambience & outdoor porch seating. The wait staff was great and the food we had, pork chop w mac & berry sauce & bbq short ribs, were cooked perfectly. The menu is small but feel there is something on there for everyone. Strongly urge anyone going to make a reservation as they can get very busy. My husband & I think this small restaurant in Fernandia is a little gem!!!"

"Great beer list. Enjoyed the pear cider. I started with the smokey tomato broth mussels - delish! The daily special white bean soup with inhouse sausage was excellent too. Husband had the tea brined pork chop, which was delicious. I had the scallops. We both really enjoyed the coffee & donuts dessert. We were originally looking at the foie gras burger but after seeing someone else order it, it was too much food after a late lunch."

"As a couple constantly seeking great dining and culinary experiences, we rate 29 South Eats on our top 10 list. The freshest, farm to table ingredients are used in creative recipes yet remaining approachable. We visited for dinner twice during our four day visit to Amelia Island. We must say it saddens us that we cannot visit this establishment on a weekly basis in our hometown :( chilled creamed pea soup with lobster...oh my goodness...one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. Another fav dish was the shrimp & grits, just a hint of sherry in the sauce was perfection. Plenty of shrimp both sautéed & fried with bits of sausage decorating the plate. Ieft my wine selection up to the server on both occasions and was not disappointed."

"We visited 29 South Eats last year when we were in Amelia Island and loved it so much that we returned. I remember how much I loved the pork chop with mac & cheese/preserves. I ordered it again and it didn't disappoint. It was just as amazing this time as it was last year. See you again next year 29 South Eats."

"The menu was exceptional, creative, and included many choices from sandwiches to full dinners. We loved the options. And, I loved the burger with foie gras and duck egg.... have never seen that on the menu anywhere"

"Had very high expectations and was somewhat disappointed. Staff seemed hurried, but it wasn't that busy. App. of artichote was tiny. Entrees of scallops was good. Entree of Carbonara was poor with little flavor. Our waitress was good though. Needs some management help to meet expectations."

"Had a great meal on our first night on amelia island. The servers were really friendly and explained the farm to table concept. We had the fries green tomato stack and smoked trout salad. I had the scallops which were perfect and the bf had the special which was a hefty portion of pork shank. The chocolate disaster was only okay but everything else was delicious."

"The service was excellent and well paced. The salmon was delicious but could have been enhanced with a few thin slices of sweet onion (but who knows -- I'm a New Yorker). We did a "surf and turf" concept; sea bass special and sweet tea pork. Both entrees were outstanding! For dessert we split the warm donut special which was a bit disappointing. The interior space is small so I would recommend eating on the porch. 29 South was one of the most memorable meals I've had in awhile."

"It was the best food we had on Amelia Island. We enjoyed the fried grouper sandwich, soft chicken tacos, shrimp and grits and pizza. The desserts were awesome and very large. We shared two desserts between five of us and left some dessert on the plate."

"The food was great. Amazing almost. But the server was horrible. He couldn't answer questions about beer on the menu. We didn't see him after he dropped off the appts until he dropped off the check. And when he did he said "Yeah I kinda abandoned you, didn't I." If it wasn't for the food I wouldn' t recommend it."

"My wife and I had one night to out on the town from a conference and picked 29 South. We had never been there before. Chef Bret blew us away with some of the finest dishes. We had the simple crust appetizers, pulled pork egg rolls, followed up by the pork chop in an apricot sauce which was over the top good. My wife had the shrimp and grits a local favorite which was just as great. Our server was cool and had loved upstairs in the house many years ago. Great time great service .....keep it up and we will be back!"

"29 South has a small porch which is very nice for lunch and warm evenings. The inside is not much to look at and the seats are not particularly comfortable but the food makes up for all of that. We especially enjoy the fact that they use their own garden and local vendors. The help is all extremely friendly though a couple of glitches came in the wine ordering department (forgotten glass for one guest and had to go looking to order second glass). Other than that there were no complaints. Definitely would recommend it to others and certainly will go back many times."

"Normally I wouldn't write a critical review, but 29 South is one of those places with pretensions and awards tacked up on the wall. So, here goes. We reserved for Monday night in mid-March. Not expecting a huge crowd, we were surprised to see the place slammed. We were seated immediately, but that was about it for the service. Fifteen minutes to see a server and another ten minutes after that to get water. We ordered drinks and food and then went into a serious wait state. Appetizers arrived after another twenty minutes and finally some rolls. Entrees eventually arrived. Smoked duck salad: dry and not very smokey meat. Shrimp/grits: OK shrimp, watery grits. Cannot recommend on any level."

"I wanted to love this place and hopefully caught them on an off night. I got their suggest signature pork, mac cheese, blackberry sauce entree. Waitress suggested it mid rare, pink throughout. I agreed, it came out totally overcooked and dry. The boyfriend got their fried chicken. Nothing special besides local honey drizzled on top. The only perfect plate was the smoked trout salad we shared. Wonderful dish. Got the cheese plate for dessert. It was so, so. For the expense and hype I expected a nicer all around experience. Maybe a bit less dinerish look to the place especially when it looks like your walking up to a victorian gem and food worthy of all the hype. I needed a little more to make it worth the drive from Jacksonville."

"We eat here yearly and have enjoyed it each year. The food and service has always been excellent. We eat here during one of the busiest weekends on the island and even with the added hustle and bustle they don't seem to miss a beat. I must say this year my meal was the best yet! The chef's special NY Strip with whipped potatoes, haricots verts, and a horseradish crema. Yummmmm! All of the dishes that my husband and I have tried over the last several years have not disappointed. This year we had friends with us that aren't foodies - they were leery of the "fancy-pants" menu - and they each cleaned their plate. This is a wonderful establishment with a focus on locally sourced, sustainable, quality food, with an excellent wine & beer menu"

"This is the first time my wife, Fawn, and I had been to Fernandina and I booked dinner reservations at 29 South just from what I read and saw on line. This place well exceeded our expectaions. The food was fantastic and the service and atomosphere were extraordinary. The restaurant itself is totally unique from its struture to its interior design to it's menu. I highly recommend this place to everyone. We will most definitely be returning to 29 South Eats very soon. The entire dining experience got Fawn and I off to a great start, in what eneded up being one of the best weekends of our lives! Thank you so much! Roland and Fawn Henderson"

"Great farm to table restaurant. Husband loved the shrimp & grits, I loved my NY strip. Only complaint, strip came with ridiculous amount of (delicious) rosemary fries...and literally only 4-5 green beans...would've liked a better ratio :-) Seriously...it was A LOT of fries."

"We were first time diners and will definitely return. The scallops and pork belly was a very good small plate. Scallops were perfectly seared and translucent on the inside. Our salad, the grilled romaine, was one of the most flavorful salads in memory. Small pieces of the romaine were grilled and with the pecans and blue cheese it had a wonderful smoky flavor. Our main dish, sweet tea steeped pork chop on macaroni and blackberries was outstanding. The chop had a great flavor and the blackberries were intense and wonderful. I don't know how the chef creates such intensely flavored blackberries. For desert we shared a great chocolate sin cake. Both of us thought all 4 dishes were excellent, great ingredients and talented chef."

"Our appetizers at 29 South were among my favorite plates of our getaway weekend trip. Fried Green Tomatoes are a staple in the south, but the addition of goat cheese takes the dish up a notch! And the “Simple Crust of Bread” was anything but simple with perfectly braised short rib meat. My husband ordered a menu item I’ve not seen anywhere else: a burger made with Waygu beef and Foie Gras. He loved it! I enjoyed my Duck Breast Salad, but it was not a Wow meal. Our server, Ian, on the hand was a Wow server; his never-ending smile brightened the room and our evening. We sat at a table near the pass and enjoyed being able to watch the action. It also allowed us a very gracious conversation with Chef after our meal."

"First time vacation diners went for Valentines Day, couldn't have been better. True farm to table restaurant, extremely knowledgeable staff and excellent wine list well paired with the entrees. Save some room for their signature desert: coffee and donuts. I won't spoil the surprise, but you will be talking about this desert and possibly creating your own."

"I was very excited about coming here after reading reviews but it did not live up to my expectations. I had the fried chicken which was good but not great. I did like that it was a boneless breast. The mashed potatoes didn't have much taste so not worth the calories. It came with 4 beans laid on top for color on the plate. When I asked the server if there was a vegetable I could sub for the potatoes, why didn't she mention they have green beans? The server didn't come over to check on our food until halfway through the meal. My husband had the shrimp and grits and enjoyed them."

"I was lucky enough to dine at 29 South twice the week of January 28th.The food was great. The fried green tomatoes are a must! The Southern fried chicken was fantastic. Two people in my party had the pork chop and the presentation was amazing. The Mahi Mahi came out looking like a dish out of a 5 Star restaurant in New York. Good recommend! Oh and Bob our server was perfect!"
