In January 2003, Vince Morlet opened Tapenade Bistro with the idea of bringing an urban bistro to the historic fishing village of Steveston, BC. Over the past several years, Tapenade has earned the reputation of being an exceptional neighbourhood bistro with great food, outstanding service and fantastic wine. The menu is steeped in French tradition, though is updated with west coast sensibility and is presented in an approachable and informal setting. The "simple, yet elegant" cuisine showcases the natural beauty of local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients in an appropriate and sumptuous manner.

"We booked for 6 people with a high chair and almost everything was accommodated, (except for the request for a window seat, but you can't have everything). The staff, from the owner Vince all the way to the servers, are always warm and welcoming and makes us feel nothing cannot be overcome. Our brunch items came out quite quickly, and with the Top Chef Candidate behind the line, the meals were extraordinary and delectable.
It is the best spot in Steveston for Brunch and we are mildly anxious to return to try their regular menu."

"The warm, friendly greeting as soon as we arrived at the door make us feel very welcome. The young woman who greeted us made us feel immediately that we had arrived at a good place . . . . . the beaming smile and cheerful greeting from the man at the bar (who became our wait person) give us the feeling we belonged.
Excellent food, friendly staff. . . . the only minor negative was that the service tended to be a little slower than usual - however it made us feel part of that important movement - the slow food movement. . . . . . We will definitely return."

"My husband and I hadn't been to Tapenade for over a year and there has been a change in Chef in that time, so we really weren't sure what to expect. Fortunately, we had an amazing dining experience. It was one of the best meals we've had in a long, long time. Kudos to Chef Kayla Dhaliwall and the wonderful staff at Tapenade Bistro."

"Tapenade is the venue of choice for lunch for a friend and I. We love the location, the food, and the service. They are very accommodating of food allergies and the service is friendly, attentive, and informative. Food is very good, featuring unusual combinations that really work together well (e.g., the beet salad with hummus and watercress), and is presented beautifully. Try the lemon tart for dessert. It's a unique take on the lemon meringue combo."

"Service was friendly and efficient. Decent ambiance but was food was an extreme let down. Not worth going out of the way to dine here as there are many better options and less expensive too.
Dishes that disappointed:
1) Roasted Bone-in Pork Chop entree - where was the bone? All we received was a fist sized centre-cut, which makes the meat more dry
2) Root Vegetable side dish - 3 brussel sprouts, 8 pearl onions and a few slices of asparagus for $7????
3) Lemon Meringue Tart- the lemon curd was runny and there was hardly any meringue...a teaspoon that was blow torched for a second
4) Callebaut Chocolate Pudding - if Bernard Callebaut knew what his chocolate was used to for, he'd pull this dish. Spicy...no...more like a volcano of chill"

"A decent restaurant. We don't live in steveston, if we did we'd go back and give it a second try but it didn't blow us away enough to have us drive from downtown vancouver. Our waiter was clearly a bit over stressed with a few large tables that night so service could have been better. Food was ok. French onion soup was described as having a bit of an extra kick with some chilis but in fact it was rather bland. I had the prawn dish and the prawns were overcooked and the sauce tasted a bit like it came from a jar. I tasted my partners chicken and it was quite tasty. The lemon meringue tart while tasty, was quite runny, not really set. The texture could have been better. All in all, just ok. Will still cheer for chef Kayla on top chef Canada."

"Food was good with their new chef. But the dessert - hmm... I was very disappointed with the vanilla creme brulee. We had the earl grey creme brulee before and it was by far the best brulee I have ever tasted. The vanilla creme brulee was quite a disappointment. Not only was it dense, there were not any specks of vanilla bean (though it was NOT mentioned in the menu). It was flavorless as well. Plus it did not come with the sable cookie as mentioned on the menu. The waiters were too busy with the party of 30. We were actually quite disappointed with the waiter as he told us he would need to table back by 8pm. Our reservation was at 6:30pm. Even if our friends were not late, we would not have managed to finish in 1 1é2 hours."

"We were a party of four. We arrived at 5:30 and the hostess was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was not very busy yet so we had excellent service from our waiter. Unfortunately the first information he gave us was that they had run out of mussels. So we had the pimento mac & cheese croquettes as an appy. They were delicious. The best bite of food of the meal. While the others quite enjoyed their mains. I had a bit of a struggle to cut my fillet. It was cooked to the right temp, just not butchered very well. Over all a pretty good meal. I think Chef Kayla's food is interesting and flavourful. Just a few growing pains of a young chef."

"I had very good memories of Tapenade food 3 years ago. Last night my daughter wanted to have steak for her birthday, and she was left to only one choice - Filet of Beef. I had Brick Roasted Chicken, my husband had the Porkchop, my other 2 daughters got the Chicken, and the Linguine. My 11 year old son was excited to eat the the Poutine when he ordered. When all the orders came, there was just a small portion of the beef like 3 inches diameter, 1 inch in height. Save on's Roasted Chicken tasted better without their sauce. Linguine was bland. Worst, potatoes in the Poutine seems to have been cooked many times - its burned! ~ with very little cheese. My potatoes were soggy, and veggies were too hard to chew! Not going back."

"We were at Tapenade's first Family Night. It was great. All food was served family style (on a platter that you served yourself). We began with a delicious wedge salad which included bacon bits and blue cheese. We were then served a very delicious rotiessiere chicken with stuffing. The side dishes were lyonnaise potatoes and broccoli with cheese sauce. We finished with sharing a mini rhubarb/blackberry pie with vanilla ice cream. The food was delicious and as everyone was having the same meal it was delivered hot and in a timely fashion. All of this for the low price of $25./per person. What a deal! We thoroughly enjoyed it all and are hoping Tapenade will make this a regular event."

"Pleasantly surprised that Tapenade has a new brunch menu (as of Jan 2013). I couldn't pass up the Chicken & Waffles as it was the first brunch entree listed on the menu. Inventive take on a classic. Nice taste overall but there's room for improvement (subjective, of course): yogurt batter was slightly powdery and the maple cream cheese syrup could use a little more oomph. Beets and Greens' beets...sweet and delish. Excellent charred lemon dressing and I do like them pine nuts. Bit more beets and a little less greens and perhaps some bread/pita (we were given bread -- yay) on the side to polish off the yummy hummus would take this over the top for me."

"Valentines Day dinner was supposed to be special but the food was not that great. The waiter was too busy, rushed and not polite. Sometimes kitchen staff had to bring our food to the table and they did not know how to be gracious in setting the plates on our table. At the end of our meal when I left a nice tip, the waiter did not seem pleased as if it were not enough. He just dropped our receipt on the table without handing it to us, and he did not say thank you. We probably will not return to Tapenade."

"First time there. Customer service was fantastic from the hostess who greated us, to Vince at the bar and the engaging server we had. Food was interesting and delicious. Desserts were probably the weakest of the courses. One we had was a bit off, we commented on it and they brought us out a different one...we didn't ask them to, they just did it. Tasted good, but it too was not quite to the caliber of the first two courses. Bottom-line would definitely go back, the menu is interesting and good, they know their stuff and did everything possible to make our experience a good one, we had a really enjoyable evening."

"We loved the new menu, and really enjoyed the soup of the day (potato leek), the sous vide pork chop, and the brick chicken. We are looking forward to trying the duck carbonara and the shepherds pie on our next visit. Service, as usual, was excellent, thanks to the attention of Franck. It's obvious that the new chef de cuisine, Kayla, is confident and creative, and we are excited to see so many wonderful changes to the menu."
