"I happened to notice this place while doing other business at the shopping center it is located in. I took my parents here for their anniversary last year, and this year I had the family meet here for my birthday. The spatial layout is great for anyone with a loved one in a wheelchair. The food was excellent and the staff very accommodating. The decor is country French, so it's a nice place for lunch or a special occasion dinner or romantic evening. Plenty of parking too. Bravo!"

"Market Place Grill is a quaint restaurant nestled is a small shopping center off Pomerado Rd. We enjoy the wine list and it has great food. The only draw back is that the service can be short handed at times. So be prepared to wait on your food."

"Its a nice place to god for some great food. Its a bit overpriced for the location and the view of a parking lot. Service is pleasant but not too attentive because it was busy. Busy is always a sign of something good. The good food allowed me to overlook the slow service, no view, and lack of glamour at glamour pricing. Would I return? yes but not often."

"Our server was lovely. There was construction (repairs) being done...distracting, as they seated us right next to kitchen and the restaurant was empty. At first the server said she didn't notice the noise, and then she fessed up..... The sea bass was dry, the scallops were good my husband said. Overall food was salty. Our final visit, with so many good restaurants here in Rancho Bernardo, they need to step it up a bit and be more welcoming and friendlier to all diners if they want someone to become a 'regular'."

"The food was excellent. The crowd was down when we arrived. We sat on the patio and didn't need the heater on at all. Our waitress was excellent and remembered us from the last time we were there. All in all it was a great dinner and a great night."

"quite an older crowd. Server wasn't very spot on and didn't communicate well - language and understanding barrier - but he was very nice. The place is old and outdated - could really use a facelift and an update but it seems to cater to the retired crowd more. We all enjoyed our food and I would go back for the lunch."

"We (a small of ladies) went for a special occasion for lunch. The food was elegant and very good. Two small complaints: The lunch menu items were a little overpriced for the amount of food they served (which was, in my opinion, a little skimpy). The waiter also didn't bring out a wine list for those who wanted wine with their lunch, didn't ask if we wanted to see a wine list, instead promptly took our order so the people who wanted wine just let it go (I think they were embarrassed to ask). Otherwise, it was very good and a very nice place to go for a special occasion."

"We arrived for our 7:00PM reservation only to be ignored by the 4 or 5 people working there. After about 10 minutes without so much as a greeting we left. This was our 2nd visit there and was the complete opposite of the great time we had on the 1st visit. Unfortunately, we will never be back. All they had to do was greet us and tell us they would be with us shortly."

"Everything was delicious, even the steak ordered medium but served medium-well. Since I used to order all meat well-done, I was okay with it. While we really enjoyed the salad appetizer, the scallops were outstanding the last time we were here. I didn't care for the sea bass, however. We had the chocolate mousse this time and the warmed blueberries over ice cream last time; both were so good. Water is always so difficult to keep filled; my only complaint."

"Loved the atmosphere and the staff was friendly and informative. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to our expectations. The short ribs seemed to be a low grade meat and lacked the true rich flavor and tenderness associated with the dish. When the dessert list arrived we were informed that 3 of the desserts were unavailable and when my husband ordered a glass of Port we were informed they were out. If the restaurant was prepared to serve everything listed on their menu the evening would have been much better."

"I thought the salad was very good, however a bit small. My husband and I live in the neigborhood, so we go there fairly frequently, and we've seen the size of the salad decrease. Also, we know that the owner has another restaurant downtown San Diego,which we also visit, and he seems to spend more time there than in the one Rancho Bernardo, thus his personal touch is missing."

"The food is always good at French Market grille. But the service is always very strange. Nothing is offered, you have to ask for most everything. The waitstaff always acts like they would rather be anywhere then serving you. Even getting a root canal. I can't figure it out. As I said, the food is delicious, and the ambiance lovely. "This was our first time at this restaurant. Reviews were very good. I was very disappointed. The service was very mediocre. There was only one other couple in the restaurant and it took forever to even get a drink. The salad was good as was the soup, but the soup portion was very small for the price. We split our dinner at a charge of $5.50, but the accompaniments were extremely skimps, 2 different types of potatoes and 1 little carrot each. I could only get 1 bite out of my steak. The rest was grizzle. In fairness, our son had salmon which was very good. Between the service and the food, I would not go back."

"I was very disappointed in the French Market Grille. We had not been here before and went for Valentine's Day. While the restaurant could have taken this opportunity to win new customers, they seems instead more interested in maximizing the profits from this one day. They added extra tables which made the room feel very cramped. They did not have adequate the wait staff so service was slow. And portions were small, especially given the price. I will not be returning."

FMG has no bar service . They actually have a very nice bar but they use it as a large set up station. I was told to go across the parking lot to a Chinese restaurant as they have a bar. We did that, no good it was full. Ugh!

They served us cold bread. Really? C'mon.
We ordered the rib-eye. Comes with mash pot and veg medley, no options.
Food arrived, couldn't see any mash pot. It was under the meat, must have been at least a tablespoons worth. Meat was ok.
Got our check for around $140, I felt totally scammed.

"I have been to this Resturaunt many times and have rated it excellent for food and service......unfortunately on Valentines day my wife and I were disappointed.....service was slow, they put us at a very poor table right near a doorway where people were constantly walking by.
I ordered duck and it was dry and tastless. My wife had steak and said it was good but not noteworthy. I know that on a special occasion like Valentines the resturaunts are very busy....but I have to say I was less than impressed. Once again, this was too bad because my ten previous experiences had been excellent"

"They were not aware if our reservation ev en though it was made thru OpenTable.
Once seated we were ignored for 15 minutes before anyone acknowledge we were there, another 10-15 minutes before we got water, anoter 10-15 minutes before waitress came for our order. The final straw was when we tasted the scallop dinner. VERY salty and strange herb combo. In the past this dinner was excellent but this time it was the pits. Mentioned it to the waitress who offered a free dessert. We don't eat dessert. I think they should have compted the dinners - they were so bad."

"We'd been here before but not since the owner opened a sister restaurant downtown. The owner's nephew was our waiter. Could not have asked for a more inviting, attentive server. We were interested in the twilight prix fixe menu. We then found their weakness which was in the wine offerings. Most of their French wines had been taken to the downtown restaurant. There was only one Burgundy left, but it was a superb Chambolle Musigny. Now I admit a great wine can lift mediocre fare. However in this case the food was the equal to the wine. We left very pleased with the overall experience and hope the French Market Grille will find a way to keep French wines around to go with their superb French cuisine. And superb French service."

"We picked a slow and quiet evening for dinner at FMG. The service was very good, server gave us a reasonable wine recommendation that we really appreciated. We enjoyed French onion soup, the crab cake in filo apps, and beef tenderloin and the duck confit entrees. All were excellent except the soup was too salty (with the caveat that FOS is often made too salty). Cheesecake and chocolate bomb were also quite good. We enjoyed the quiet and the fire in the fireplace. Will come again."

"We decided to try this for lunch as we were going to be in the area. I had a lunch steak with frites and my wife had scallops. Both were done just right, but both were extra salty and thus not "perfect". Just a word of caution if you do not like highly salted foods. Hopefully this an anomaly, but since we do not live in the area we might not be in a position to find out."

"My first time at your restaurant, although not my last! Food was very good; enjoyed your table wine - great for the price. Our service was good; they did not "HOVER" which we appreciated, but provided us with just the right service. Thought the food presentation was excellent!"

"A neighborhood restaurant that would have otherwise been very acceptable, was ruined by horrible service. Our waiter was brusk, bordering on rude. When my order of beef tenderloin was served, it was well done, or worse, instead of medium rare as ordered. When we couldn't attract our waiter to complain, I tried to atract the attention of any waiter, as my wife's entree (served as ordered) was getting cold. The waitress I was able to attract said, from some distence, "In a minute", and of course never came over to our table nor contact our own waiter. Later, we managed to attract our waiter, and my entree was replaced by one cooked as ordered. Sadly, we will not return."

"A very good French Continental restaurant at a very good price point. Started with a vegetable soup that was light and had a very nice flavor. The wife had the apple walnut salad, dressed perfectly, and with nice fresh chunks of blue cheese that were creamy delicious. I had a double order of steamed clams, done perfectly with a broth that was soup worthy(yes I drank it all and sopped up a lot with the bread.) The entrees were calfs liver done just right and as tender as could be, with the perfect sauce. My filet was medium and quite tasty with a nice garlic salt crust(lightly crusted). The crepe suzette was spot on as the Grand Marnier sauce was light and smooth. My wife had the apple tart tatin, and proclaimed it the best she ever has had"
