"My dinner, this past Friday, was outstanding.I had lamb, beet salad, gnocchi...superb. However, the noise level became unbearable. We were sitting near the grill and in front of a large table, that became filled with very loud women. I had finished my meal, but needed to leave because of the noise. It appears that sitting near the street might be quieter. I loved the food and would return."

"This is a fun place to go for dinner, but pricey. We were able to keep the cost down by bringing our own wine - otherwise count on at least $50 per person. The menu is fresh, and it has changed considerably since I was last here. My biggest complaint is that the tables are close together, so there is little privacy, and it is noisy."

"I thought this was just a gem! What a wonderful experience. Food was excellent, as was the wine and the service was great. "The food was mostly delicious, loved the pommes frites and the special of chanterelle mushrooms on potato puree, disappointed in the crispy chile relleno - the batter overwhelmed it all. And, for an expensive restaurant in the Bay Area - they have no emphasis on organic or sustainable - when asked, the waiter reported chicken is still coming from Foster Farms. The wine flights are very fun - tried the bubbly this time, yum. Aside from spotty service (ranging from very attentive to ignoring us for long stretches), the overall experience was very good, I'd happily go back."

"Very disappointed. It was my father's 92th birthday and no mention or acknowledgement from the staff. The prices were too high for the product( the Sysco delivery of meat and other products occurred during our meal). "I have been to Va de Vi over 20 x. It is really good and the price points are spot on. I felt the service was a bit over the top for such a casual restaurant, but ok. It is no place to have an intimate conversation, but most time when I go there I don't expect it.
The sweet potato look alike sushi roll was ridiculous to start. The short rib wasn't, it was a skirt steak or something wrap, but the ahi and salad were delicious.
I will go back."

"Va de Vi is one of my favorite restaurants in Walnut Creek. I will always choose to eat at the counter becuase I really enjoy watching the food being prepared. We were at the end of the counter which would not be my first choice but the host did save the spot for us. Which we totally appreciated since you can reserve those spots. Our service was outstanding and the food was fantastic. It was a tad noisy for our paty of three - hard to communicate slightly. Do expect to spend some money but the food is totally worth it. I love coming here and will be back again!"

"We were very disappointed with our dining experience. With the exception of the chopped salad, the remaining dishes were all over seasoned and very salty. One of the dishes we ordered was short ribs and they brought us pork ribs. We just assumed it was their version of short ribs. The ribs were accompanied with kim chee and my wife cannot tolerate spicy foods and did not eat it. After finishing the ribs, the waiter told us about the error and offered to bring us the short ribs, but we were through eating and declined. He did not offer to remove the charge nor did he offer any further reduction of the bill. The tables were too for any private conversation. The restaurant is very convenient to our home, but we will not be going back."

"This is a small restaurant with close tables. The food is excellent! I have been 3 times and only once did I order something that wasn't quite up to my tastes - the lamb skewers. They were a little pricey for what you get and not that appetizing. On previous visits they had lamb chops that were fantastic. Being as it is small plates to share the rest of the food made up for one so-so dish. I would recommend only ordering half of the dishes at the beginning and then adding additional items when you are ready. Our last visit they tended to bring them too fast and we were done in 35 minutes. It is slightly noisey and a little cramped but well worth it for the food and desserts. This continues to be one of our favorite restaurants"

Would be nice if got a little crisp on the outside. Mole Tacos,not spicey enough;not very flavorful meat texture mushy Short Ribs,so tender you can cut it with a fork but bland. The rissotto seemed a little over cooked and could use more flavor. Dessert: Chocolate souffle great, Bread pudding tasty but too dense. "Va de Vi is great, you order small plates for everyone on the table (5 this time) to share.This works out especially well if you want room to order desert, which is delicious, too.The pomme frites are a wonderful appetizer(we had 2), we also ordered rock shrimp carbonara, hanger steak, lamb strips and crab pot pie.Every entree was terrific and left us wanting more.But since we wanted chocolate souffles for dessert we did not order anymore.Be careful the chocolate souffles can be overdone.We requested the inside be liquid on our souffles and this time they were adequate.One of my daughters had bread pudding that she said was very good.Nice thing is they refill cokes from bar for the kids for free.Servers usually seem rushed, but ok otherwise"

Also, the GF menu item wasn't GF --- so some care needs to be taken there to avoid dining disasters. There was no option of anything by cow's milk for the coffee, so none of us had the coffee -- but we would have otherwise. The portions were ridicuously small, even for a tapa place. "From the moment we were greeted the service was excellent. This is a small plate restaurant and is intended to allow visitors to sample lots of taste sensations. Every item was top notch. Vito, our waiter, even fed the parking meter for us (I was lucky to get one of the spots behind the restaurant) As usual, we found new treats and old favorites on the menu. New favorites on this visit were the tacos, gnocci, and even the garden salad.
Dessert was a wonderful chocolate souffle' with a side of gelato.
Thanks to Vito, Ryan, Alberto, and Stephanie. Each of them were very friendly and efficient and still had a few moments to say "Hi" when we greeted them. (PS Sorry I didn't remember Alberto's name on the last review)

"The best!
This is the place to go when you want a fun, creative, and unique taste experience.
Their Elderflower Gimlet was a great way to start. This drink was perfectly balanced.
The mushrooms on the creamed polenta were so amazing that I almost didn't notice the delicate flavor of the polenta itself.
The fried rilleno was spectacular. Just enough fire to make it exciting.
Every other dish was just as special and deserves credit.
Tim, our waiter, was fun and informative. Ryan helped insure that our food arrived quickly (still quite hot) and even offered a little hot sauce which was a great compliment to an old favorite dish (Rock Shrimp Lumpia). Even ?Guillermos? busing added to the experience.

"We generally enjoy dining at Va de Vi. However, we have noticed a negative trend during our last few visits. First, service is declining. We work for a Fortune 50 company and have managed large organizations. We understand the difference between employees who are not satisfied and those who are happy. Your servers do not seem happy and let's face it - they are your direct interaction with your customers. And in this economy you need repeat business. Our server was somewhat rude and had a cold personality. At one point she basically dropped our plates on the table and stormed off, to the point where the people at our table wondered if she was mad at us for some reason. Secondly, the wine list has not changed in a long, long time."

"2 weeks ago when I had lunch here I felt that the quality of food was noticably down. This time I was very pleased with everything again, so were my 2 friends."

"My wife and I decided to try Va de Vi one Sunday evening and although we enjoyed the food, we were disappointed at the price compared to the size of the plates. Now I understand they serve a tapas style menu, but I have been to other similar restaurants were the price was reasonable for the portion size and the food just as good. For example, we placed an order for Manchego Cheese and were given a small 1oz wedge to share between the two of us and the cost of this slice of cheese was five dollars. Lofty considering many stores carry Manchego cheese at lower prices. I did also try the Spanish Wine flight and was also disappointed with three mediocre wines that were overpriced. If your willing to overpay for good food, Va de Vi is for you."

"Usually I just love this place...I must say this is the first time I went and really thought the food was just ok...I mean in most cases, less than ok. I don't know if they have a new chef, but it really seemed different. Not sure I will be going back any time soon. For what you pay and what I got...not too great at all."
