Va de Vi Bistro & Wine Bar
Va de Vi translates to "It's all about wine!" in Spain's Catalan language. Of course, it's all about food, too! Executive Chef Andy Phillips' menu encourages diners to explore and share a variety of eclectic, international small plate portions. Bold tastes encourage diners to explore the large international wine list, easily navigated by tasting notes. Many wines are offered by the glass in addition to pre-arranged flights to allow diners to compare different wines and discover new favorites. A warm, casual elegance defines the ambiance. "I may be at my 100th trip to Va de Vi. It always is wonderful. The wine tastings allow for sampling new interesting varietals. I always love the Ahi Tar Tar and the Sea Scallops with cauliflower was inspired."

Service was embarrassingly rude. The main courses were just dumped on one side of our table. When I saw this, I tried to tell our server where the plates should go but be was already walking away even though he knew I was talking to him. If this wasn't Mother's Day I would have spoken to the manager but my Mom was with us so I didn't want to further embarrass her."

"I have been to Va de Vie many times in the past. The food has always been "good." This time, it was disappointing. The crab rissotto was tasteless, and the grilled yellow tail was overdone. We also had avocado and shrimp lumpia which was okay. The best dish was the hanger steak which was tender and cooked just right."

"An interesting and eclectic menu of "small plates" - four or five will make dinner for 2. The food is consistently well prepared - but if you want it served in a particular order, you've got to ask - or else it'll be delivered in an order set by the chef's deranged imagination. For a place that bills itself as a "Wine Bar," the wine list is unadventerous - but the 'flights" can be fun. Service is friendly, but rather perfunctory. The room is pleasant and you can eat outside in the Walnut Creek heat if that's your preference. The "quality to price" ratio is reasonable."

"After Va de Vi being our favourite restaurant in Walnut Creek for many years, its seems to have changed quite a bit. The empty tables compared to the earlier crowds might be testimony to this. The food is not of the same quality of good ingredients and freshness anymore, and portions have shrunk. It's a real shame."

"We had a bad table in the back; the kitchen was really noisy, and there was a table with active kids. We were meeting a friend from out of town, so it really wasn't good, since it was hard to talk with all the noise. I wouldn't go back for this reason. I dislike being given one of the worst tables in the house.
The food was okay, but overpriced. We had some grilled asparagus which were pretty good, and a very small portion of grilled yellowtail tuna, which was also tasty, but the pork dish was dry and flavorless, and the chard was salty and overcooked. I do like that I could order taste-sized glasses of wine, so I could sample more than one with my meal."

"Went there with my husband during Walnut Creek gourmet food week. He had the slider with truffle fries, generous serving and very good. I had the Gnudi which is like a large gnocchi except it's made with cheese rather than potato. It had a light creamy sauce that was wonderful. I also had the beet salad with fennel and a citrus dressing that was very good. They have a great selection of wines at various price levels. Overall, it's a very nice place to eat."

"In spite of my noting on my reservation that this was a special occasion lunch, we were first shown to a table on the street before we asked for a quiet table in back, by the tree. The food was fine. The service was not. THe food was virtually thrown at us by the servers. A salad for two was shoved between us in a bowl ... with a serving spoon! Our waiter placed two glasses of water with ice on our table and when asked for water without ice and a glass of warm water, emptied the glasses into a nearby planter, spraying us with water. I ordered tea with dessert and it came without sugar or milk, both of which I had to request. Nice ambiance, good food, terrible service by waiters who gave the impression that the diners were a bother."

"I have been to Va de Vi many times now and I love the concept of small plates and international food. The food is local for the most, well presented and creative, but the portions remain too small for the price tag. They are big on fancy sauces, I would prefer less of them and more vegetables. The wine list is extensive, I really like how they group the wines by theme/region and have flight options. The gluten-free menu is a little restrictive and the dessert options are even more limited. I love the ambiance, very European. The service was efficient, a little hasty."

"I have been to Va de Vi three times and on each of those occasions I was impressed with both the food and the atmosphere. This is a wonderful place to share small plates. My friend and I ordered just three plates, a delicious beet salad, a scallop dish and their signature mac and cheese. The portions are nicely sized and we both felt the amount of food we had was sufficient. We did order a gelato for dessert, which we shared. We sat outside and enjoyed the beauty of the spring day and the delightful Va de Vi experience."

"Went for lunch menu during Restaurant Week. Wife and I both ordered the beet salad and gnudi, and went separate ways for dessert -- chocolate tart for her, bread pudding for me. Salads were surprisingly bland, vegetables and vinaigrette both lacking flavor, and the cheese therefore overpowering. Gnudi was divine -- flavorful and hearty, coming out in what seemed a small portion (maybe 8-9 pieces each), but in the end heavy enough to fill up for lunch. Bread pudding was sublime and gives us enough reason to return -- totally outshined the tart, which on its own was tasty but couldn't hold a candle to the pudding. Will return when new menu items pique our interest, particularly the vegetarian items."

"Visited Va de Vi for Walnut Creek restaurant week, initially I was disappointed that the special menu was different from what had been posted on-line, but I will say that all the food was excellent. Getting seated and getting our drink order was timely, but it was far too long between receiving our drink and having someone come back to take our order. If a restaurant is going to operate that way please serve bread or something when I arrive. Once food started coming the pace was great. Warning that this is a very noisy and farily cramped space inside."

"I came to Va de Vi to have lunch with a friend. The food was great. We ordered 4 plates and split them all so we could try more food. The atmosphere was nice for a mellow conversation, we didn't have to raise our voices to hear one another, and the weather was perfect for sitting outside. The one complaint I have is that when the waitress was bringing one of the plates to our table she tilted it enough that it spilled a ton of oil into my lap. Luckily I had a napkin in my lap, and the oil all landed on the napkin. If it had gotten on me I would have been upset, but she did apologize and did help clean it up. Otherwise the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I would come here again in a heartbeat."

"This has been my second time in Va De Vi, and I have been very happy with service and food. One thing that was completely missed this time, when I made my reservation through Open Table was a special accommodation note in which I asked for the staff to sing happy bday to my friend, with whom I was, and the message was not even read. The waitress brought out our deserts and apparently didn't read my note. My friend was very sad, and was expecting a bday song and maybe a candle, as I do this for her every year in different restaurants. I feel like I cant rely on OT reservation and will have to call every restaurant going forward and make reservations via phone so an important message like this doesnt get lost."

"My boyfriend and I went here for a nice date night and had a wonderful time. The only thing I would have to say is the dunganess crab risotto was a little too salty. Besides that the wine was great and everything else we had to eat was delicious!"

"I have been to Va de Vi a number of times and always thought the food was good. I was a little disapointed last saturday night. Most of the dishes were ok not great and the shrimp and grits was sub par. The shrimp were small and grilled way tooooo long with a charcoal taste the grits were to loose to get on the fork. I had recently had the dish at Esin and it was fantastic . I have to say the wine was GREAT though $19 for a glass is a bit high."

"Nice surprise on the food, the ceviche and the Riesling from the discovery flight were probably the best things I had so far this year.
It was Wednesday night, so not too crowded, but after the first order, we had a hard time getting the attention of our waiter to reorder."

"Va de Vi's new chef had not quite kept the cutting edge culinary achievements that we're used to. The best items remain the beet salad, pork bellies, & pommes frites.
On the other hand, the "jumbo prawns were very tiny shrimp and rather tasteless. The sliders were OK but not that appetizing. The chicken tacos are better at a good Mexican restaurant.So many things kind of tasted the same.
The drinks are now in tiny bar glasses that needed refilled about 3 times during our meal. They need to kick up the menu if we're to come back.....

"This is one of my husband's and my favorite restaurants to go to. We have been here several times and I can honestly say that every time we've visited, we've had impeccable 5-star service and 5-star FOOD!
Unlike other wine bars that only offer the most minimal selection of small plates for snacks and appetizers, Va de Vi offers a full-course dinner selection ranging from salads, soups, vegetables, cheeses, meat and poultry, pasta, and fish. Everything we've ever tried has been delicious.

"Fabulous food and would definitely go back just for that. Went for wife's birthday and the restaurant did not do anything to acknowledge it. No candle, no keepsake menu, nothing. It is a happening place so noise level is up and service can be slow at times. Had to ask for bread three times before we got any. Would return as a foodie, but would skip for any special occasion."
