Nel Centro (Italian for "in the center") explores the classic dishes of the Riviera and chef David Machado's passion for grand culinary traditions and locally sourced, seasonal food.
An open dining room seats 115. The bar seats an additional 34. A beautiful outdoor patio seats an additional 50 in season. Private parties, meetings and banquets are available in our five attractive private dining rooms. Valet parking is available adjacent to the restaurant at the Hotel Modera, 515 SW Clay Street.

"Go early when the sun's out to grab a table for a delightful al fresco happy hour. Lively patio scene offered on a first-come first-served basis. Service is prompt and friendly and the happy hour menu is extensive and its offerings well-prepared. The perfect spot to enjoy Portland's summer weather."

"My food was fabulous - I had the benedict with sage hollandaise, however my friend had the brioche french toast which was nothing to write home about and pretty average. The service was VERY slow even though they appeared not to be that busy. Overall it was ok for me, but my friend will never return."

"I really enjoyed the Baked Goat Cheese appetizer. It was such a delicious appetizer. The Mahi Mahi was an excellent special on the day I was there. I would recommend and brag about this restaurant and the prices are good as well, not overpriced. Bon Appetit!"

"Traffic was at a standstill and we were 30 minutes late for our reservation. We had called to tell them we would be late but it didn't seem to cause a problem for the staff at Nel Centro. We were seated immediately, our dinner was served and we made our lecture at the Schnitz on time. The dinner was delicious (pasta with wild boar ragu for one of us and ravioli nicoise for the other) We still had time for salad and two glasses of great house wine and never felt rushed. Great job Nel Centro!"

"The food was delicious and the service was great. It's not the kind of restaurant you'd expect to find in the lobby of hotel. It's upscale food is a welcome surprise. Particularly appreciated the space between the tables it gave you a more intimate and private feeling. For that reason, it would also be a good spot for a business lunch. Oh and there's an outside area with fire pits that looks quite inviting."

"We were off to the Keller and needed to be out the door by 7 PM. My husband and I arrived in plenty of time for our reservation, but our dining partners were late; no problem, we were seated at a table large enough to accommodate our party when all arrived. We had appetizers and wine, keeping our server informed as to our deadlines and how late our friends would be - she made sure that she got to our table immediately as my in-laws arrived, got their order in and on time wiht ours, and we walked out the door right on time. It was a fabulous evening, made better by the folks at Nel Centro! Remember you can valet your vehicle in the hotel, and with the proximity to downtown theaters, it can cut lot of hassle out of your evening!"

"The service was wonderful, always around to get us anything we needed, but not too intrusive. Our server was able to recommend a great wine for us. The wines were a little pricey, but that's to be expected at a formal dining restaurant. The food was delicious! We had the wild boar bolognese and the lamb with brussels sprouts. The lamb was to die for, I would recommend trying this dish if you have the chance."

"Had a great pre-theater dinner with a friend. Can't say enough about the service. This is a big, busy room, but everyone was friendly and helpful. Server was respectful of our time restraint but never seemed harried by it. I would say that if you want to make a 7:30 curtain, make a reservation. Ours was for 5:30 and gave us plenty of time -- even for coffee and dessert. I've been to Nel Centro for happy hours, a quick pizza before a movie, lunch and dinner and never had a bad moment -- or a bad bite to eat."

"For the cost...not the best bang for your buck. Drinks were expensive ($14 for a martini and $14 for the JT in the bar...most drinks at the table were $10) and the food was not up to the menu pricing. Atmosphere was nice but a bit noisy until the initial "Happy Hour" crowd left. Nice jazz after 9:00 PM."

"The food was just outstanding. This restaurant had been recommended to us and what a prize it was. I had short ribs and I am still thinking about how wonderful they were. We will be back. Also, our granddaughter loved the pumpkin cheesecake. A lovely dinner."

"We spent the weekend and enjoyed both dinner menu and brunch menu. The entire experience was positive. The addition of live jazz both Saturday night and a special jazz brunch on Sunday added to the weekend experience. I would recommend Nel Centro and the Modera Hotel as a destination for local and distant visitors."

"Great dinner for Valentines day. We had the pappardelle with wild boar ragu and the NY strip steak. Both outstanding dishes and the pappardelle is just like we had in Italy on our honeymoon. I highly recommend it!"

"My first time there, though not my husband's. We had a very well-prepared, delicious dinner. The wait staff was very attentive. One problem was that, since I am very short, the tables and booths were too high for me. The maitre d' solved the problem by bringing me a taller chair. However, I can see that being a recurring problem for me at this restaurant."

"Took my teenager here for Jazz Brunch. Awesome! Loved the whole thing, start to finish. The music was fantastic, the service friendly and attentive, the food super yummy. House made cinnamon roll?!! It's a comfortable place, where you can comfortable taking your time hanging out listening to the music or reading the paper. Add to that all the natural light, and it makes this a wonderful place to get a morning cooking. xo"

"I might recommend if I have better food next time. I had the lamb burger for lunch. I love lamb, but this had several pieces of small bone. Not pleasant. Eventhough it had great flavor, I was more focused on chewing carefully. Salad was good.
Help was awesome. I was dining alone. Refilled my diet soda, and noticed I was ready to leave and brought the bill right away.
Will be trying again next week for lunch. Hope the food is better."
