Baker and Banker
Husband and wife team Lori Baker and Jeff Banker opened the doors to their restaurant on December 1, 2009. Located in an old apothecary in the residential Pacific Heights neighborhood, Baker and Banker serves up a convivial ambiance for its fresh farm-to-table New American cuisine. Caramel colored walls and leather banquettes summon diners to relax and savor multifaceted dishes from Chef Jeff Banker. Pastry Chef Lori Baker turns out hand crafted breads and sophisticated versions of classic American desserts. Between 16 and 20 wines are available by the glass, and the list favors food-friendly naturally produced wines from sustainably grown grapes.

"Celebrated our daughter's birthday here...had heard good reviews so we were very excited. Started with very pleasant greetings from the staff. Very attentive and friendly server with perfect timing in coming to our table just when we needed her. Our appetizer was just delightfully delicious...the smoked trout on potato latke...wow, what a scrumptious way to start a meal! That combined with a salad would make a fantastic meal in itself. Our entrees were the halibut and the black cod. Both were wonderful with flavors popping which made each bite so enjoyable. Finished with 2 desserts: the triple chocolate cake (w/birthday greetings) and the lemon dessert....one word: WOW! Would go back anytime to this cozy, warm and inviting place."

"I have to say it saddens me to write this review. I have been to Baker and Banker a number of times, and referred it to friends aplenty. We came with my parents to celebrate my birthday on friday. The restaurant is small and it was so noisy that we could barely speak. The menu options weren't as robust as they normally are. I am a pretty adventurous eater and there wasn't much that looked good. My food was just...eh. No one else in the party enjoyed there meal either. The salmom was unusually rare and the food wasn't as flavorful. Like I said this has long been a favorite so maybe I just caught it on a bad night. Not sure I really want to return though."

"Overall this restaurant experience was very nice. Our server was just okay but the fact that the chef came around and visited each table to check in on diner's meals I think made up for that. Food was interesting and tasty. We also enjoyed the wine."

"My friends and I have been to Baker and Banker many times, but this time was the best. The trout appetizer continues to "wow". Normally the entrees are very good - this time they were as good as the entrees. Our visit paralleled any Michelin rated restaurant, such as La Folie. Even Kokkoari, which is one of my favorite restaurants in the City, could not compare to this evening. "Wow"."

"Baker and Banker exceeded expectations. The bread was delicious and each course interesting. But even more remarkable was the excellent service we received. I have loved this spot from when it was the Meeting House, to Quince and now Baker and Banker continues to the trend of great dining experiences in this cozy neighborhood spot."

"Made a reservation via OpenTable, which the manager chose to ignore. He said it was because we were 15 min late. We were on time, but couldn't check in at the host stand because the manager was too busy talking to a bunch of people who I thought were customers. Nope, they weren't.
He then tried to give our table away to a pack of teenagers who entered the restaurant after we did. When I asked him which dishes were the quickest to prepare (FYI, since we were seated 45 min after our reservation time), the response I got was "Whatever." Wow, classy. He proceeded to snap back at every question we had about the menu. The wait staff was awesome though and they even apologized for their boss when he was out of earshot."

"We enjoyed the ambience and simple decor. The staff was very good and friendly, so the overall feel was relaxed. The menu was interesting and we were grateful for some vegetarian choices which were good. The fava beans were fantastic! And we especially liked the halibut and the salads. We will be happy to come back and try more things!"

"I now understand what it is to appreciate fine food. Each ingredient in a dish is detectable and yet the whole is a superb combination of flavors. My comments apply especially to the octopus appetizer and the Maccheroni (and I am not a vegetarian). The bread basket and the chocolate cake are also outstanding. My husband enjoyed the Bavette steak, which was cooked perfectly. The only disappointment was the special spotted prawn appetizer. The service was excellent although there was a glitch in the bill at the end because of a change in appetizer order. The design of the space is warm and comfortable."

"Just as fabulous as The French Laundry and Manresa's. We had the Line County Greens salad and Smoked Trout for starters. The salad was out of this world: very fresh butter lettuce sitting on avacado cream with the tastiest vinaigrette, every bite bursting with a multitude of fresh flavors. The smoked trout, much to our surprise (not trout people) was utterly delicious. I could have made a meal on that alone. My husband had the Kobe Bavette and I ordered the Alaskan Halibut. Everything on the plate was something special, down to the chard subric which was laced with Meyer lemon essence. The Kobe was done to perfection and very tender; my halibut was incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked. We will DEFINITELY return"

"It's been over a year since my last visit, and I think B & B has lost an effable something. While nothing was wrong with any of our dishes, and my business associate (who'd never been there before) was quite happy with his food, I remember being stunned in past visits, and there was nothing spectacular in this one. The smoked trout/latke was impeccable, but the duck dish was not memorable. In other words, a good dinner, fine evening, but not as special as it used to be."

"It was our 1st time at the restaurant and felt welcomed as soon as we walked in the door being greeted by the "Chef". We were seated immediately. Can't say enough about the food....it was fabulous and very imaginative. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Would definitely go back and would recommend this wonderful place to anyone."

"Everything was really good except the prices!
The artisanal break basket (with the types of breads written on their blackboard and costing $4.50) was delicious, but certainly at a cost. They were so tasty we ate them all, which meant we filled up on bread.
The food was good; the service was good. But for the price, it would be nice if the tables weren't so close together. We could hear everything discussed at the tables next to us. How can you have a romantic dinner like that?"

"We had a fantastic time at Baker and Banker. The service was outstanding, the wait staff worked really hard to see to it that we were comfortable and happy. We started with the trout appetizer and that beet sauce brought the whole dish together and highlighted the smokiness of the fish. I had the black cod and it was buttery and perfectly cooked, it felt decadent and rich, yet delicate at the same time. We finished with the legendary chocolate cake and a glass of Banyuls. I highly suggest you go here intending to leave room for dessert or you'll regret it. The chocolate cake blew my mind. They wrote "Happy Anniversary" on it for us which made the whole evening lovely and memorable. We'll be back."

"Everything you want in a restaurant ... Good food, good service, attention to detail and a nice vibe in the place. The owners are always there making sure everything goes well. The dishes are imaginative. The staff make every effort to please. There is a New York sensibility ... in the best waynice little bar scene......the latkes and smoked trout with beets and shaved fennel is worth the trip on its own...this is the best restaurant in the nothern end of the city...A16 and Spruce could pick up some pointers here..."

"We have eaten at Baker and Banker before and LOVED it... this time was a huge disappointment. The menu selection was tiny, the Kobe bavette was tough and could not be finished, some of the items on the plates did not seem to meld with the rest of the dish and were "just there" and in their zeal to clean up the table a full cup of coffee was taken away from one of our party. This restaurant has dropped from one of our favorites to a backup option if nowhere else is available in one saddening meal."

"We live a few blocks from B and B. we like to take friends to good places and this one is a good one. Nice waitress, good food and everyone minds their own business unless you find some kindred food freaks to talk to.
We especially liked the way our eggs were cooked for BISCUITS and GRAVY, very smooth and light, and we liked that they used good Champagne
for our Passion fruit Mimosas....nice....jl"

"Interesting preparation of vegetables, e.g. chopped turnip greens to go with the whole baby turnips. My husband loved the grilled baby bok choy, one of his favorite vegetables. Staff was very accommodating of our time constraint to attend a nearby play; however, arrival of the bill was slow. But we did get to the theater in time to get good seats given general admission. Great innovative show at the nearby Custom Made Theater Company on Gough St. Check it out. The Theater does innovative, challenging shows, in a small (less than 100 seats) in theater in the round. In general, my husband thought it was one of the better meals we have had in SF. And he is fussy. So maybe, give it more stars than I did."

"Having come to Banker and Banker for a few years now, it was a surprise disappointment this weekend. The food was rather unimaginative, presented prefunctorily. It seems like the place is resting on its laurels, few as these are now. The wine list was somewhat pared down, again surprisingly, with nothing of good value. The service was not at all polished. It's time to look for a new hangout in SF as this place won't be around for too much longer, which is a shame."

"Based on one brunch: We started w/ apple fritters, pretty good. Not a lot of apple, but they were there. I'd shred the apples and mix them in so every bite said 'apple'. That's just me (a past pastry chef). My husband's burger was on the small side. He said it was 'unremarkable'/average. Fries were great. I ordered the fruit plate. It was ridiculously puny. When you see a GIANT sticky bun and a GIANT cinnamon roll to either side of you, one would think they'd be somewhat generous with fruit. Sure, good fruit can be more $$, but still. The presentation was lovely though. Service was fine, but "restrained friendliness.""

"Well, I'm prejudiced: this is my favorite restaurant. Everything about it I like. The only thing was that last night (Thurs. evening) it was crowded and loud. Usually, I go a bit earlier and not on a Thursday, so it's more "restful." However, it's such a great place, I'll always go here!"

"Despite an awkward location, Baker & Banker manages to feel clubby and intimate. I'd been meaning to try the restaurant for years, but it is a destination on the corner of Bush and Octavia. We had a knowledgable and discreet waiter, who serviced the table with aplomb. The dishes we ordered were impeccable and enjoyable. Chef Baker stopped by the table and recommended two dessert choices. Go with her expert suggestions for a grand finale."

"Highlight, as you would expect, was their baked breads and desserts. The Lemon Meringue in the Mason Jar was a fun presentation only surpassed by the terrific tasting dessert! We truly enjoyed all their wonderful food and highly recommend this somewhat "off the beaten path" and neighborhood restaurant. Next visit, brunch!!"

"Food was excellent and the waitstaff was very gracious and accommodating- when we explained that we had flown in from the east coast and was still on east coast time ( tired and hungry) they made certain we did not have to wait for our table and were served right away. They even called a cab for us and let us know its arrival so we could return to our hotel comfortably. The cod and scallops were excellent and the salad which we shared as an appetizer was sized appropriately for two. We were just sorry we couldn't indulge in the wide array of beautifully sounding desserts but it really was too late in the evening for us (more like midnight than 9 by dinner's end). Highly recommend this neighborhood style restaurant."

"It was my first time at Baker & Banker and I know I will go back. They're doing everything right here: food, service, ambiance. It was a perfect evening, and I can't wait to have dinner there again. Table 1 has the best view of the whole restaurant, yet it's private. Bravo to the B&B team!"
