"This restaurant is in the theater district, and it is hard to get reservations in Season. We did snag one for Mother's Day and it was a memorable experience. The food was great, but you have to enjoy fine dining. There was a good selection of specials, both wine and food. It is a quite, upscale place with very good service. It is an excellent spot for a special occasion gourmet meal."

"For Mothers' Day we expected more innovative "Specials"; we found the food to be average at best and the prices to border on outrageous. Because of the mediocre food and high prices we would not return to this restaurant and would advise our friends to dine at a fine restaurant, not Cafe Bijou. Wine list was adequate."

"Dining at Bijou Cafe is a wonderful experience from the greeting at the door to our exit. Service is exquisite, prompt, and polite! Menu is outstanding with specials of the evening clearly described in detail by servers and are always delicious. Food is always served hot! Servers are beautifully trained, extraordinarily polite, and they make dining at the Bijou a special occasion, even if it is not a special occasion in our lives. THE perfect place to dine before a performance at the Sarasota Opera House. Bijou Cafe makes one feel very welcome, and it is clearly our # 1 Sarasota restaurant."

"We have been looking forward to going here for along time but were very. There was absolutely nothing special about it at all. The food was unimaginative and poorly cooked with overdone duck (supposedly their specialty), cloyingly sweet saouce and sour salad dressing. We won't go back."

"Very uneven food preparation. I had the days market fish , grouper, offered as a "delicious dish". The dish was totally tasteless. My wife had rack of lamb which she enjoyed. When I mentioned how tasteless the grouper was to the waiter he said its a tasteless fish. Service is geared for quick turnaround. There are much better places in town for this price range that are consistently excellent, and not the rushed service."

"My wife and I have dined here many times, and were somewhat disappointed on this visit. First, when the air conditioning unit kicked in, it was too cold and very drafty at our table. I complained several times and ended up suffering through the issue. Second, the waitress erred and brought the wrong soup rather than the house special crab and lobster bisque which I had been looking forward to. Third, for my main course I ordered the roast duckling with cherry sauce...which I have regularly ordered here. The duck was over cooked and dry, and tasteless without the extra bowl of sauce I requested. Notwithstanding, we will try the restaurant again on our next visit to Sarasota."

"I live in Sarasota and I know lots of people LOVE this place, I find it uneven. My visiting family insisted we go there. We had a reservation for 6PM for 3 people, they wanted to seat us in the bar. Really? I asked if there was another location and there was a lovely small room we were taken to, approx 8 tables. I thought it was perfect. Only one other table occupied the entire night. The food was really just OK. Frankly I find a few of the local chains to be better in selection, taste and variety. Why is it that right on the Gulf, the fish selections were salmon and flounder? Dessert was good, 2 people shared a banana croissant bread pudding that was a reasonable portion for sharing. It would have been great with some whipped/ice cream."

"This was our first time to have dinner at Bijou Cafe and we were not disappointed! We were celebrating our anniversary. The duck was simply perfection and the special fish (hogshead snapper) was delicious. Our salads were also very nice as was the dessert we shared. Fruit with whip cream (we chose the cold version). The ambiance is so lovely! The hostess was warm and welcoming also. I would say our waiter seemed to disappear at some point later in the evening. He was not overly attentive, but maybe that is the new thing these days! We will return."

"Outstanding dinner. Out of towners looking for a special dinner. With reservations we were seated in the bar. Not what we had in mind. Wanting the main dining room we were told a 15 minute wait, we were 15 minutes early, but told no place to wait inside. "We walked outside where a few tables and chairs were, but rain earlier had dampened out chairs and our spirits. Within minutes one of the hosts came out with cushions so we could sit, then a suggestion of a drink on the patio which we choose to celebrate. With those two gestures our spirits lifted and we had an outstanding evening. The food was creative and cooked perfectly, the service was attentive, and we found a wonderful South African wine. Cannot wait to return."

"We ate at the Bijou before going to the Opera. The service was excellent and unpretentious. We both had the special of the day, Scallops: three medium size scallops on a miniscule bed of pureed parnips, with tossed gourmet greens in a raspberry balsamic sauce.
Not worth $35.00 per plate!! The scallops were passable, but not especially tender and succulent. The desserts were fine, one creme brulee and one fruit sabayon. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly acceptable. We each had a glass of Muscadet, which was good."

"the restaurant came highly recommended and the staff were very nice, but we were disappointed by the food. It started off well with the appetizers but the main courses were a flop. He was without the very basic wait staff skills:
Did not know how to properly pour wine without spilling & dripping wine all over table, menus .& diners!
If he had only asked diners IF the preferred more wine even while I had a full glass of bottle #1, he poured me a full glass of bottle# 2. Of which I never drank & am certain my guests would have drank if left in the bottle.
I could go on but why bother. It's the establishments responsibility to train & watch staff-
Hey, how about teaching to remove in used plates from table when the are stacked up- old glasses-- ugh.

"After reading some ratings online about the Bijou Cafe we decided to try it for dinner. Unfortunately it was just average and nothing stood out as exceptional. "There were six of us and two werecelebrating birthdays, The six of us had four different entrees abd they were ALL good. The 3 people who ordered the duck had plenty leftover for lunch the following day. We informed the server that we had to be at a play at 9 (res was at 7) and we were on our way at 8:45.

So we were early, 5:00!!!!
None the less it was delightful, we all choose different meals
Amd the wine was delicious and a very nice man who served us.
We were in the bird room which we enjoyed .
As we left at 7 we noticed the Nar and it was busy and festive.
The nicest restaurant we have been to in Sarasoata,
Charming and clean.
Also pleasant staff down to the bus boy.
Thank you."

"We made our reservation online through open table. We got to the restaurant and there wasn't an "open table". The owners were very apologetic and told us we could wait at the bar and they would seat asap. Let me tell you....the food was phenomenal! We only had to wait 15 minutes to be seated and the entire staff kept apologizing for the wait. After eating dinner here, we said that we would have waited an hour or more because the food and the service is more than worth it. Joel was our waiter and he was spot on with everything. Excellent first time experience."

"The Bijou Cafe is a true gem. Finally, a chef who knows how to make a crab cake that is replete with real crab; the herb crusted salmon ranks among the best I have had the pleasure of tasting around the world...cooked perfectly. Finally, a restaurant's whose food is worth the price."

"Classic and classy but very in touch with contemporary tastes. We enjoyed duck, Scottish salmon, South African mixed grill and lamb shanks. Each diner was eager to share with the others because each was delighted with his or her own choice. The complementary canape and finishing chocolate were lovely and thoroughly appreciated touches.
