Ping Pong Dim Sum - Chinatown
Ping Pong restaurant is a modern take on a very ancient Chinese tradition - the Tea House. Hundreds of years ago, merchants on the Silk Road would stop at tea houses enroute to rest their weary feet, relax and drink tea with their fellow travelers and share Dim Sum - baskets and dishes of little sweet and savory snacks, usually steamed, baked or fried. Ping Pong may be a Twenty-First Century Tea House, but
we’ve kept all the best bits of that ancient tradition, like meeting to relax and share appetizing food and fragrant tea. We just thought that after the first thousand years or so it would be OK to add cocktails to the menu.

"We were coming here for a late Fathers Day lunch. It was a little busy when we got in so we excused the service being slow, however when the place cleared out and we were one of 3 tables the service was still horrible. We waited 30 minutes for our cocktails, we didn't order till about 40 mins after sitting down (not by choice) and it was just overall slow and unattentive. I wanted the experience to be good because the food was OUTSTANDING- however when you have horrible service that's what you remember. I would go back just to see if it was an off day - but just a fair warning that expect a long meal."

"I recommend Ping Pong Dim Sum to anyone who asks me for a good place to eat in Chinatown. Good food, good atmosphere, interesting specialty cocktails. It's a good choice for most people, but please note, this is not a child-friendly restaurant. There's a Fuddrucker's two blocks down if you're hauling kids around."

"If you are looking for dim sum but prefer ambiance over a hole in the wall, this is the place for you. It was beautiful in it's simplicity but very elegant. There was the typical choices there and it was delicious.

"PP DS has a nice clean environment with prompt service and very good food. Some of the steamed dumplings were difficult to get out of their baskets with chopsticks. Almost all the small plates contained three items which made feeding our party of four challenging. The drinks were delicious but seemed watered down--definitely not worth the price."

"My family had a great time at Ping Pong, and we were happy to get a good reservation last minute on a Friday. The service was not as attentive as we would have liked, especially when we were trying to flag down our server to order more dim sum, but the food was all delicious and we enjoyed ourselves. The crispy duck spring roll, the pork bbq bun, the sea bass dumpling, and the spicy vegetable dumplings were our favorites. Dessert was a little disappointing, and the restaurant was very loud, but overall we had a good experience and I would definitely go back to Ping Pong."

"The first time I tried Ping Pong, I thought that it was pretentious, though the atmosphere was great. The food was good, but overpriced - considering they are located in CHINATOWN where you can get traditional dim sum for half as much. This time, I enjoyed myself more - maybe because it was before the lunch "crowd" came in (it never really got that crowded, thankfully - I think the prices keep this restaurant from being the go-to spot for the work folks), maybe it was the company. Who knows? But I did enjoy the Power Lunch selection - just as I thought I would be starving ten minutes after lunch, the stir fry selection appeared.
The menu was a bit confusing, but once cleared up by our server, it was smooth sailing."

"We had a great time--the only thing I would point out is that all of our dishes came at once which was overwhelming to recieve all at the same time. It also made for an extremely crowded table. "The food is excellent, the concept is right, the location in Chinatown is perfect. The service was a tad slow -- should have been at a quicker pace since dumplings aren't that complicated to make? Like SEI down the street, you leave a bit hungry -- due to small portions, 3 bite sized dumplings per dish serving -- and quite a bit lighter in the wallet. Overall though we rate the place highly and will return."

"We took our Daughter to dinner here prior to the Rihanna concert at Verizon. Love this place. Staff was friendly and accommodating. When some of our party cancelled because of traffic we asked if we could move to a smaller table. They gladly helped us move and thanked us for asking. Love the food and the service was top notch. We would have dinner here again without question. It is a bit on the expensive end, but we had quite a few drinks (Excellent by the way. Very creative. Now I know what Lavender and Rose taste like!) and all in all it was a special occasion so the cost was quite reasonable. Great place."

"Food was good but portions were too small compared to a 'normal' dim sum restaurant. For example, an order of 'shu mai' is normally 4 pieces, this one had only 3. Prices were a bit high as well. Between the 4 of us for a Sunday lunch, we spent over $140! The service was okay, we had to hunt down our waitress a few times. The place wasn't that busy for a Sunday but they may have limited wait staff working that day. Overall it was good but I probably won't be going back there again."

"I love Ping Pong. I've been frequenting this restaurant since I lived in London several years ago. The food is always delicious and I really enjoy the seasonal menu. However, I'm always surprised at the quality of service. It always, always, always leaves something to be desired as the staff always does the minimum. "Dined here with a group of 8 people. The food was good and the beverage selection is extensive and interesting with many unique cocktails. I ordered the asian manhattan, which was very good and mixed well. It is rather loud, so that might not be good depending on your group. However the table they sat us at was round, which helped for conversation. The service was rather slow and spotty. Overall a fun experience, but I probably would not return."

"I went for Dim Sum and was very disappointed because it's not truly Dim Sum. You order from a menu just like how your order sushi -- you don't have carts coming around where you just pick what you want. Also, it took a long time to get the food, considering it's Dim Sum and it should be ready. I realize it was a Sunday morning and it was busy, but still not at all what I was looking for.

"The service at Ping Pong was pretty bad from the moment we walked in the door. There was a very long line to the hostess stand, which we had to wait in for about 10 min. It appeared that the hostess was seating people who did not have reservations. Then, when we reached the hostess stand, we were told we had to wait for a table, notwithstanding the fact that we had reservations. The waitress was not very attentive, and it took some time to flag her down to place our order. The food was fine - not exceptional, but tasty enough. Not really worth the hassle."

"We went for Easter Sunday Dim Sum and the Bottomless Mimosas. The food was good - though there was a sameness in flavor and texture to some of the dishes. The fish cakes and black bean sauce stood out. We sat at a nice, big round table and all seven of us were able to hear each other talk, which was great. The wait staff was attentive though they were very busy, and we did not feel rushed. The bar looked like fun - worth another visit in future."

"With the brunch deal you definitely feel like you're getting your money's worth of delicious (if not entirely authentic) dim sum. The duck and five spice dumpling was hands down my favorite bite (or three), but there has really never been a dish I didn't like. Considering the price of individual drinks, you may as well get the unlimited mimosa deal as well. With the dimly lit dining areas, the ambiance can be very romantic for dinner, but the brunch crowd is pretty lively."

"The management of this place needs a lot of improvement. It lacks one central authority. When we went the cleaning staff did not hesitate to drag a cleaning cart across the restaurant causing a ruckus. The drinks menu seemed interesting but the drinks were nothing like the menu suggested. Even I could mix better drinks than that. food was the only saving grace of our visit."

"This was our first time at Ping Pong Dim Sum and I was very impressed. The food was really good and they had a great variety to choose from. The menu could use a few more descriptions, especially when the name of the dish was Chinese. And the pace of food to the table was a little off. Sometimes we were waiting for 5-10 minutes between dishes and the kids got a little impatient but I'm sure adults could fill that time with conversation. Overall a very good first experience and I would definitely go back as well as recommend it to friends."
