The Fort
Situated in the Red Rocks country 17 miles southwest of Denver on Hwy 285, The Fort is a true replica of Bent's Fort, the first American community west of the Missississippi & rendezvous of Kit Carson & other "Mountain Men". The nine dining rooms, seating 350, are white plastered over adobe. Unusual but hearty dishes, typical of the early West, are provided from open grills. Waugh!

"Wednesday evening. Made reservations for wife’s birthday. Service was slow (e.g., took 37 minutes for appetizer to arrive). Table water had bad taste. Food was just okay, and for that price the food should be spectacular. On a positive note, my two boys enjoyed their kid’s meals."

"My friends have been hyping The Fort forever - now, don't get me wrong historically, the ambience, and efficiency from the wait staff come highly recommended but I wasn't all that enamored with the food, "I know shocking"! We ordered the guacamole, one of the staple appetizers on the menu - and quite frankly, it was bland in taste/texture and felt it was more "pre-mixed than original. The entree, Elk chops, though very good, one was cooked to perfection and the other chop was over cooked. Personally, the best part of the meal was the salad, home made blue cheese dressing. For the dessert course, though there were several temptations, we simply had the vanilla ice cream (it was good) Overall, I would certainly give it another chance."

"Great opportunity to experience a unique menu. It's not very often that you see buffalo, elk and antelope offered. If your looking for something out of the ordinary, I definitely recommend "The Fort". For the not so adventurous; no worries. They have an excellent selection of more traditional fare."

"Our waitperson, Ruth, was exceptional!! Buffalo empanadas excellent w/ two sauces. Try the Dixon's red chile sauce. Our party had the coffee & Dixon red chile rubbed duck, the salmon, the Gonzales steak, and a bison filet. Truly outstanding meal. Great pomegranate martinis; not too sweet. Blackberry cobbler, Mexican chocolate layer cake for dessert. Ambience simply lovely. We took advantage of the fire pit outside in the court yard after our meal and did some star gazing. Brought a friend from DC here for dinner who is also a western history buff. Splendid in all ways."

"Staff was very curtious and attentive. The owner came out to greet us and shared some Colorado history with our table. Beautiful outdoor views. Casual but with a fine dining feel. First time here and it was Mother's Day so they had a fixed menu. My family enjoyed the beef and game very much. No chicken on the menu for me and only 1 vegetarian dish with quinoa which I enjoyed very much. Guacamole not great. I would work on another bread roll recipe if they are made in-house. My family can't eat rolls fast enough and we usually get seconds. We didn't even finish the first basket. Very expensive $220 for 2 adults and 2 kids not including tip. Decided this will be a special occasion kind of place. We enjoyed it vey much."

"This is where I take visitors to Colorado to show them what Western dining is all about. The menu is unique, but not excessively bizarre or exotic, and I've never had even a mediocre meal at the Fort. The food is always memorable. The location, setting and decor are all "Colorado Frontier" and you know that "this ain't no city rest'raunt!""

"I have been waiting over a year to find a special occasion to visit The Fort again. The last visit one of our guests was especially impressed with the elk chops. "The Fort is a great place for anniversaries, but last Thursday night they had a party of 8-10 that was set up next to us with lots of table and chair moving and noise. This really detracted from the atmosphere. The wait staff did a very good job in coping with the situation, but the large group was just next to us and too close to be comfortable."

"Old west theme with great variety of game choices. Had the game plate with Elk, Buffalo, and Quail, the asparagus soup, and the bone marrow appetizer. Portion of the bone marrow was definitely not a single person serving, plan to share! Portions were healthy but no overwhelming. Loved the asparagus soup. Had butterscotch sundae for desert and it was delicious but was a larger portion size than you typically see in restaurants. Decor was nice but seemed a bit dated. Loved the wood and adobe structure and the teepee in the entrance courtyard."

"The Fort has a one of a kind of vibe, with Indian loot players, and birthday huzzahs going off now and then. This is backed up by a creative menu of wild game and fish. "My husband and I had so much fun last night at The Fort! We started with the Quail Egg appetizer- unique and delicious. I order the 16oz Beef Ribeye Steak Carne Asada Style- cooked to perfection (and I'm very picky about how my steak is prepared). My husband order the Buffalo Beef Ribs- they tasted much like beef ribs. They were brilliantly seasoned and the half order was plenty! Dessert followed- 'Holly's Sundae' was amazing. Very pleasantly surprised at how reasonable and extensive the wine list was. They had plenty of wines to choose from that were $30 and under. Can't wait to go back!"

"1. Our waitress was a Robot...she used the word 'wonderful' for everything...which made us feel that she had no real opinion of anything. She did everything too fast as if to rush us. We brought 8 people...only half of us had been there before, I recommended it! Darn!
2. I had duck..good but have had better..ordered rattlesnake, you had none. So ordered Rocky Mountain Oysters...over cooked ( maybe they could be a bit larger)
3. Mushy potatoes, ribs were dry!!!
It will be a long time before we go back. The flavor in the veggies/pasta...ruined the meal, had same flavorings.
4. No one enjoyed their experience except one person who had the ribeye...we went there to try the wild not the normal.

"We have eaten at the Fort many times over the years. The service, appetizer and salad were wonderful as usual. I tried the elk chops this time and they were a definite disappointment. The flavor was fine,but they were tough and dry. Definitely not worth the $41 price."

"Unique!!! Some of the best food I've ever had. Unusual fusion of items I've eaten for years and some I've never tasted. For example, the Quail Eggs wrapped in Bison served with berry jam was amazing! Our server, Eric, recommended it. We were here to try new food & were happy to have his extensive knowledge & suggestions.
The authentic greeter, who stopped by "in character" & told us stories, the sweet hosts, and professional & freindly servers made this our new favorite place before we even tasted our hand-crafted peach brandy julep or those crispy-quail eggs. Sorry, I have to mention them twice because I've never seen those anywhere and now I crave them!!!
Our server, Eric, was beyond exceptional. Cozy great atmosphere a plus."

"The Fort is a good if you want MEAT--beef, bison, elk, even antelope. I had the bison filet mignon, and it was perfectly done and delicious. The sides of asparagus and potatoes were very good. I tried bison tongue as an appetizer, and the sauce it came with saved it because it was tender, but dull on its own. The Mexican chocolate ice cream sundae was simple and yummy. If you love wine, there's an extensive wine list (albeit in plastic sleeves in a binder). The service was very good: attentive, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is kitschy, like Disneyworld. There's a gift shop, a strolling Native American flutist, and coyote and bison hats. Overall, it has unique dishes, good service, but was pricey and felt like a cafeteria."

"Took family here for wild game & weren't disappointed. Food is delicious. We requested to sit w/a view & were placed in the atrium room though, so unfortunately we missed out on the "atmosphere & decor" that the interior main dining room provides. I think next time we'll do the inside as it's got way more character than the enclosed patio does.

"The Fort is a great place for special occasions. The western decor creates a comfortable atmosphere, even with a full house. We have had the filet mignon on several occasions and it has always been good. The service staff is outstanding and always makes the experience pleasant. I have recommended this restaurant to my friends. They have also enjoyed this restaurant."
