Periyali
A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers.
The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

"Periyali is a reliable choice for Greek food. The lamb chops and vegetables are good but the appetizers are even better-- chicken livers with lentils, octopus and grilled mushrooms. We got free desserts because our friend is regular and it was her birthday. Service is always gracious."

"The octopus, greek salad and grilled striped bass are all excellent. They spend three days preparing the octopus - beating, blanching, marinating and then grilling. Some of the service team have been at Periyali since the Restaurant opened more than 20 years ago. If you want a healthy, tasty and fast business lunch or a night to catch up with friends, then Periyali hits the spot."

"Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Wonderful food. Our seafood was perfectly prepared (grilled Bronzino and wild salmon in phylo ). Service was excellent and attentive but not bothersome. The small separate rooms make for an intimate unrushed dining experience. Only disappointment was that there was no Spanakorizo on the menu."

"Haven't been there in several years and used to like going there; but I was quite disappointed by this experience. I don't know if the problem is new management or something but the wait and bus staff seemed to be running all over the place but not getting anywhere. The food was overpriced for the quality and the drink prices were astronomical. Will probably not go back again."

"Followed a friend's recommendation, went to Periyali for dinner with a friend to celebrate his 50th b'day. The food was fine but not special, the service was peremptory. My feeling was that if I were a regular and had ordered a la carte and not from the Prix Fixe we might have had more attentive service. There is clearly a difference between being feeling invisible and an elegant unobtrusive attentiveness. Sadly it was the former."

"Their food is wonderful! I had heard that their Grilled Octopus was fantastic! In the past I avoided ordering this dish as I never enjoyed the chewy consistency (plus the idea of eating ugly Octopus arms/legs never appealed to me). However, we ordered this as one of several appetizers, and wow....absolutely delicious. They were firm, not chewy, and the seasoning was exceptional! I selfishly scarfed down most of the order! Their Greek meatballs were delicious as was the calamari. And we all ordered fish as our entree...my sea bass was moist and delicious, my brother's branzino fish was exceptional, the red snapper was exceptional! Wonderful service, wonderful atmosphere, wonderful food!"

"As long time Flatiron residents, it had been a couple of years since we dined here. But we had an outstanding meal. The restaurant is clean and lovely, fresh flowers, freshly painted walls. We sat in the rear room under the skylight. I had the roasted branzino and it was excellent. I was disappointed it was served with risotto as I am not a fan of it, but was surprised and delighted by the way it tasted and complimented the fish. My husband had wild salmon roasted in phyllo and it too was delicious and cooked to perfection. We will be back soon with friends."

"I went with a party of 6. Having asked for a quiet table, as I have hearing difficulties, I was very disappointed that they put us right next to another open room with a table almost on top of us. For me, the evening was ruined because I couldn't hear much of what was said. Also the waiter recommended a dish for me after I had already ordered something else and I changed my order only to take one bite and not eat another. The waiter never asked how I liked it and rushed by the table the next time, saying "I am glad everybody liked the bass (everyone else had ordered bass). I didn't return the dish because I just didn't like it. It was probably cooked properly but it had a cloying spice which I found inedible."
