Dining at Modo Mio is a delight, thanks to the efforts of owner Gian Franco Bertolino and his talented staff. While Modo Mio translates to my way, in Italian, Bertolino has infused his restaurant with his own standard of excellence.
From the moment diners are greeted, as they enter the Newport Coast, California location, they are enveloped into a haven of warmth and hospitality. Bertolino and company are dedicated to creating and serving superb Northern Italian specialties, to their devoted clientele, in an ambiance that is both inviting and relaxing.
"This is our go to Italian Restaurant in OC. Consistently great, whether you order pasta, or other main courses. Wonderful location .always great service and to top it ,all reasonably priced."

"This restaurant was an awesome experience! From the time we entered through the doors, until the four of us left, we had a five star experience. Our female server was excellent and very professional. The entire menu is absolutely one of the very best! I had the 'wild salmon' with a wine, lemon and caper sauce. Another had the swordfish. We had salads and the soup, as well as desert. All loved the wine list! This was the best salmon dinner I have EVER had, from Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA to Newport Coast! It was the very best ever. Our party of four was raving over the dinners, and that does not happen often! All had a wonderful dining experience, and plan to return often!"

"The food is very good - service once you get seated is good - and the ambience really nice for a casual Italian with a little bit of elegance just the right amount to be casual but on the nicer side. Will for sure return but only problem is we had a reservation and still had to wait about half an hour - but it was a Saturday night and they were busy."

"Everything was very good except it was a bit too warm, we sat inside the glass window, NO ventilation. We enjoy going there for lunch, not as crowded as the evenings..."

"We found Modo Mio in 2012 when we were searching for somewhere to eat late on a Saturday night, and it has become a favorite when we visit Newport Beach. Off the beaten restaurant path of Laguna and Newport Coast, it's just across from Crystal Cove State Park near Trader Joe's. The vegetable lasagna is terrific and we haven't found anything we don't like. A nice extra is the plate of mushrooms offered by the chef (we thought they were just for us, but looks like it's on the house for everyone)! It's not a hot night spot, but the food is terrific."

"My wife and I tried this previously undiscovered retaurant in the Crystal Cove Promenade center to meet some friends visiting from the East. Based choice on the convenient location, the very reasonable but varied lunch menu viewed on line and some good on line reviews. We were the first to arrive at the resataurant for a Sunday lunch. when we left a reasonable corwd had been seated. Very pleasent staff, good service and very good food, served hot! We had Penne Salmone, Scallopine Salmone Medalions, and the daily fish special. Along with good bread and a nice Edna Valley Savion Blanc we thouroghly enjoyed our meal. We had a table by the front windows with a reasonable view of the ocean horizon given the restaurant's location."

"We were "squeezed" on a small table with 5 people while our neighboring party of 3 people spread on two tables put side by side. Service was slow and erratic; our waiter was taking care of too many tables, which is a pity on a weekend. Food was outstanding though and pricing is reasonable.
My wife ordered special fish of the day, which we were told was "white fish from the Mediterrane". When asked what kind of white fish, our waiter did not know (sic). I guess some folks think there are only 2-3 kinds of fish in the Mediterrane: white, black, red? The other selection was "white fish from the Pacific northwest". My wife did not dare ask what kind of white fish that one was ..."

"Modo Mio is one of our favorite Italian Restaurants. Especially if we're looking for more provincial Italian fare. Our late lunch/early dinner was exactly what we wanted; delicious food prepared and presented perfectly, excellent service by all the staff and they treated our five-year wonderfully, and the atmosphere was relaxed yet jubilant."

"My boyfriend and I enjoy coming here because the gnocchi is fantastic and we are huge gnocchi lovers. Also, the prices are great considering the area and the quality of food. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that the appetizer selection is small and the tables are sometimes too close together. Regardless, we will continue to dine here because it is close by, fairly priced, and great food!"

Really good bread to munch on with a fresh, tasty opening salad.
Home made pasta, the best I've had, great dryish texture, mild alfredo sauce. The chicken was tasty too, charcol grilled, I think.
Despite an uncertain start(it was 10 minutes before we were noticed in the lobby), the service was very good. We were never left waiting in a very busy room.
It can get noisy in the middle of the room; if you need quiet try for a table at the edge.
Casual though some of the rich and very rich weren't dressing down as much as we were.
It will be hard to eat pasta in another restaurant now!"

"The food was excellent, great service. Only criticism was tables being too close together, making for a crowded, noisy experience. Perhaps this was due to dining on Valentine's day, we will definitely try it another time to compare."

"Extremely loud. Decent bread, served only with butter. No grated cheese or crushed pepper offered with pasta/tomato sauce dishes, and there was no opportunity to ask for it, as we never saw the waiter once the food was delivered, until we were done."

"WORST SERVICE EVER!!!!!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I used to go there for dinner all the time, I went for lunch this time excited to show this place to my best friend who has never dined here before. I was so disappointed and embarrassed. How is it possible that the waitress does not come by not even once? not even to take our order? At the end, when she brought out our bill, she took the money and never brought our dessert out until I had to get up and complain! She was not even sorry afterwards and was so rude. She gave us the worst vibes! ALSO MENTION THAT THERE WERE ONLY 2 OTHER PEOPLE EATING THERE!!! I loved this place. My parents also go there often. I wouldn't want them to pay a penny for this place anymore"

"We went there with another couple for Newport Beach Restaurant Week and ordered off the special menu. When the first course was served, there were only three -- my salad was not served. Several "reminders" later (we asked at least three different people) and my salad was finally served (15 minutes after everyone else). For dessert, my cheesecake was unavailable (at 6:30), so I was offered something off of the regular menu. Food was okay, but nothing special. Seemed like an Italian restaurant owned and managed by decidedly NON-Italians with no clue. Highly unlikely I'll ever go back."

"Been to Modo Mio many times. This occasion was extremely disappointing. Acknowledge it was busy night however no excuse for the following: - poor communication between host and staff i.e. one person said didn't know we where waiting while other said it was under control - wine poured from bottom of bottle, this is a 9 year old wine, sediment is expect. But I do not expect to be drinking it in my glass! - mis-information, when mention compliants to staff, initially did not do anything. And when they said they would, nothing happened. Had to speak to request the manager to obtain a response. Would like to go back for the food but we are unsure"

"This is one of those places that has been under the radar for awhile, but I have a feeling that Restaurant Week this year will expose the secret. What's the secret? That Modo Mio is one of the best Italian restaurants in Orange County. The owner, Gian Franco Bertolino, also has a Modo Mio (the original) in Pacific Palisades. He's from Modena, Italy, and features mostly northern Italian specialties. The menu is varied and creative; you'll find dishes here you won't find anywhere else in Orange County. The pastas are outstanding, and they're very reasonably priced, given the quality and originality. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable and professional and was happy to make recommendations when asked. We will be returning frequently."
