Soba is a Pan-Asian restaurant that consistently rates as one of Pittsburgh's finest, with accolades ranging from Best New Restaurant (In Pittsburgh) & Best Restaurant (Pittsburgh Magazine) to Best Martini (Pittsburgh City Paper) & Delicious Design (Pittsburgh Magazine). The menu changes daily, allowing the chef to create signature selections with an Asian influence. The large selection of tempting appetizers are perfect for sharing among your group. Drink specialties include seasonal martinis made with house-infused vodkas. Soba's wine list is recognized by Wine Spectator and has a wine to complement any dinner. Soba is housed in a beautiful, three-story Victorian building on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside. The restaurant has an urban/modern Zen garden atmosphere with a spectacular two-story water wall. The restaurant includes a comfortable first floor lounge, several small dining rooms & a rooftop deck.

"The food was AMAZING! However, our service was a lacking on the personable side. Our main server seemed unimpressed and I got the feeling that she assumed we were young and had no money to spend. She was in a rush to get us our check and was not personable. But the wait staff was very friendly!

"The food was very good but eclectic and may not be for everyone. I think each of us in the party though our choices were either good or very good. "The menu seemed limited and unimaginative. The salmon was overcooked and the lamb and noodle dish was too spicy. The waitress forgot to bring the coffee with the desert, then brought it just as we were ready to leave. We just felt it was a flat experience and do not plan to return."

"Excellent meal all the way around. Everything on the menu is wonderful, including the desserts, so save room. Soba also has Valet parking now which makes the parking issue far less stressful.
Our table was ready for us when we arrived, and they were happy to wait til we got a drink at the bar. Our waiter was attentive and helpful. Everything was fabulous. We had two appetitzers (maki tuna and the calamri), and of course for the main courses, the miso cod was wonderful as usual, and the sesame tuna was a new gem for me."

"We went on a Monday night and found this place almost full at 6:30pm. Valet parking convenient as street parking is tight. Great decor--indoor waterfall, thoughtful art, etc. Beautiful presentation of food--my chocolate maki dessert was rolled into pieces with pistachio topping, soy sauce dish of chocolate sauce, pistachio cream for wasabi, and peeled cantaloupe flower as pickled ginger! Only negative was overly fussy and intrusive attention of wait staff. We literally took one sip of water or one bite and someone would refill our glass or ask how everything was. Even the young adult in our group noticed this."

"Previous visits to Soba have been highly satisfactory. However, this during this visit, the service was sub par, the food was simply okay, and the ambiance, although fairly quiet for a Sunday evening, was loud being on the first floor. I had noted on Open Table that it was my mother's 75th birthday, certainly an important occasion, but they never acknowledged that, even after I mentioned it. Not the best Soba experience. Hope it was an off night, because historically, it is one of our favorite Pittsburgh restaurants."

"We are upstairs in the back room - the vibe in Soba was great, but what made the experience was the food. It was absolutely amazing. "We chose to participate in a special valentines day wine paring dinner. It ended up being $85 dollars a person with four courses with a wine paring or $60 without. One course was short ribs, they were burnt and not prepared properly. Also the first course was tiny definitely not worth $15.00. The food and drink was alright but not worth the price."

"I went here with my family to celebrate my birthday and we had a wonderful time. The service was perfect, great cocktails, and delicious meals. Not much more to say! I will definitely be back again."

"First time to Pittsburgh, and first time to Soba. We thought everything was fantastic and the staff was extremely attentive and accommodating. Our waiter, Joe, was very knowledgeable and did a great job on recommendations given that we were first time Customers. Very solid Beer and Wine selection as well. Will definitely be returning the next time we are in Pittsburgh!"

"Great ambiance and, on a good night, the rock shrimp will blow your socks off. Melt in your mouth crispy batter and lemons, with perfectly balanced sauces. Unfortunately for us, the kitchen seemed more focused on it's special occasion tasting menu than on it's regular menu items because the rock shrimp were decidedly overcooked, chewy and about half the size of the last time we ordered this dish.
The fried rice was yummy, with beautifully cooked shrimp and the bok choy was lovely, though it could have used a drizzle of sauce.
The spring rolls are a better value at your run of the mill Asian eatery. We had room for dessert but didn't even come close to finishing them. We got through one, picked at another, took one home but tossed i"

"My wife and I went here for Valentine's and had a great experience. The quality of the food is top-notch, and they have an interesting bar as well. I had their signature seared tuna and it was expertly prepared, not ice cold in the middle like I have had elsewhere. My wife had miso cod and loved it. Our waitress was very friendly and was very helpful making recommendations, all of which were good. We did not feel rushed or crowded, and the free valet parking was a plus since there is very little parking in the area.
While the meal was pricey enough to keep this a special-occasions only stop for us, I might go back for drinks some time; the cocktails were excellent."

"While it was a nice experience, I felt the food wasn't nearly as good as it has been over the years. We both had the Chinese New Year tasting menu. The starter and dessert were wonderful, but the two main courses in the middle were not very good. The lamb was WAY too spicy for a prix fixe menu--my friend couldn't even eat it. The 3rd course was super-salty. Just didn't seem like their regular chef was working."

"The ambiance of the place was very nice. The decor, lighting and accents all made for a visually appealing experience. We both loved the giant rock water wall as well. The tables are fairly close together and at a busy time it might get kind of loud inside but when we were there it was not an issue.
The wait staff were all fantastic. Our waitress was always right there to refill drinks, clear plates or answer questions without being the least bit bothersome.
Now for the important part, the food! We had the Chinese New Year tasting and wine pairing and it was great. The foods were all flavorful and had unique touches to really bring them to life. The wines were paired perfectly to the courses and were very good as well."
