Bellanico is a continuation of Chris Shepherd & Elizabeth Frumusa’s successful restaurant in San Francisco, Aperto in Potrero Hill. Bellanico is a neighborhood restaurant located in the Glenview district of Oakland. The name Bellanico is derived from their daughters’ nicknames, Bella & Nico.
The Bellanico staff take great pride in food, service and wine. Jonathan Luce, Chef, serve rustic Italian cuisine that changes seasonally. They are dedicated to serving the best seasonal, local, sustainable and organic products that they can find.
Bellanico features Pitman Farms Chicken, Prather Ranch Meat, Duroc Pork and only wild caught fish and seafood. It also features a wine bar offering Old World wines with an emphasis on Italian wines. There are more than 25 wines by the glass & 6 different flights of wine.

"What would have been an excellent experience was undone once again by sloppy, unprofessional service. One example is that two separate courses were brought at the same time minutes after the waiter had spoken to us about pacing. We sent one back, but left a bad taste"

"The food at Bellanico is outstanding. Well prepared and excellent presentation. Service is very good and not pretentious.
Two small drawbacks for an overall outstanding rating - the kitchen noise level is unnecessarily too loud and the dining chairs are way too uncomfortable to bear all through dinner and dessert. Oh yes, tablecloths would be a nice addition."

"Great food, excellent friendly service. We went to celebrate our daughter's graduation and had a wonderful time. We all loved our meals (I had the pork loin which was fabulous) and the desert sampler. We had a hard time picking a favorite dessert from the sampler. Only regret is that it took us so long to go for our first time. We will definitely be back."

"This was a Mother's Day dinner for my wife and I and a first time visit to Bellanico in the Glenview district in Oakland, CA.THe restaurant doesn't look upscale polished and shiny. But the courses served are beautiful and terrifically tasteful and varied. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and willingly helpful about the menu and wine list. Bellanico has the friendly feel of a neighborhood hangout. We had a chance to converse with a young couple with an infant about food and parenting. This place seems to engender an open and casual atmosphere even among strangers."

"Upon a friend's recommendation we brought DC visitors to Bellanico for lunch. What a pleasant surprise! Tucked in a neighborhood storefront, the layout is simple and unassuming. But the food! Every selection was fresh with simply delicious flavors. This is "Italian" food, but not like any I've experienced before! European portion sizes meant we could savor several items and still leave the place feeling satisfied, but not stuffed. Our waiter was patient - the menu is surprisingly extensive and varied - and very knowledgeable. My wife and I shared a glass of a very good Piedmontese white. Reasonable price, too: $84 + tip for the four of us. This place is worth a special trip, and is now on our "have to go back again - and again!" list."

"I've been to Bellanico many time before, almost always for dinner and it has almost always been an exceptional meal. This most recent meal was for brunch and my experience was average. The fritatta and chard malfatti were tasty, but extremely salty. My companions liked their dishes but also felt they were over-seasoned. The service was attentive at first, but by the time we were well into our entrees water glasses stopped being refilled, the check was on the table before plates were cleared, and we were definitely feeling encouraged to leave. This is still my favorite restaurant in Oakland, but I may stick to dinner from now on."

"Great recommendation from Open Table. I had the porkchop which was a little too pink for my taste and my partner had the risotto. Overall, the food was good. We sat outside because of the nice warm evening and they have outdoor heaters to accomodate that. Ambiance was terrific and could easily be a romantic setting for special occasions."

"Having heard the review on "Check Please Bay Area" as well as knowing their wonderful sister restaurant in San Francisco "Aperto" - it was an easy choice when in their neck of the woods to try to get in. The service was superior, attentive but not over the top. The food was excellent - a special shout out to the risotto, which was vegan (except for the cheese) but was as hearty as any with meat sauce! Would recommend and will be back when in the Oakland Hills."

"This place is a real gem--great staff, nice ambiance, and the food? Outstanding. They can do plates like sweet potato gnocchi with lamb sugo (absolutely incredible), but also put out something simple like a grilled pork chop and have it be just as impressive. "I had a friend visiting San Francisco from Los Angeles and talked him into coming over to the East Bay via BART for this dining experience. HE LOVED IT - we three had the steak, pork chop, and children. Each of us talked at length about the quality, smells, and, of course, taste of these delightful dishes. Each felt as if it had be prepared just for us. My friends had white wine - lots of it - the Spanish and Italian varieties - I'm more of a merlot man. "We are frequent diners at a really nice little neighborhood restaurant in San Francisco on Portrero Hill called "Aperto," so when we read that its sister restaurant, "Bellanico," was in Oakland we decided to try it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bad idea. The meal started out good with the same warm and savory rosemary bread that Aperto serves, and the warm organic farro salad was truly delicious. Unfortunately, that's where the good part ended and we really do try to give independently-owned restaurants the benefit of the doubt! Next, the brocolli soup came out and it literally had no taste whatsoever. Not even red pepper flakes could give it much flavor. "Thanks to the reservation system of Open table, I were able to inform the restuarant that my wife and I were celebrating our first year wedding anniversary. Upon arriving and telling the hostess my name, she wished both of us a first anniversary. So did our server, Jessie. We loved the personal touch. I informed Jessie that we had a very decanter worthy wine, and she and the bartender pulled out a beautiful Riedel decanter.

"This was our second visit to Bellanico. We live in the general area and invited friends of ours from Marin to join us. Overall, the Italian fare here is inventive and most dishes were very tasty, but a few items missed the mark a bit. Very good: the salume appetizer, the pasta dishes, the roast chicken breast, and the skirt steak. The artic char was nicely cooked but the accompanying ragu missed the mark a bit and didn't go that well with the fish. The buratta was somewhat disappointingly lacking in flavor. The desserts were a little disappointing too (Italian butter cakew as too dry and the Italian donuts suffered from too much cinnamon). Service was very good. Overall, it's a good spot, though, and we'll probably try it again."
