Located at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Modern is a fine dining restaurant serving Chef Gabriel Kreuther's Alsatian-inspired French American cuisine with warm hospitality in a spectacular setting. Overlooking the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, the main dining room offers a refined experience, bringing Museum dining to sophisticated new heights. The menu features Chef Kreuther's modern, creative and elegant dishes. The meal is complemented with desserts by Pastry Chef Marc Aumont. Set in one of the world's leading art institutions, design plays a major role in every aspect of the dining experience. A $88 prix-fixe menu is featured at dinner, in addition to two seasonal tasting menus. Lunch offers both à la carte and prix-fixe options. The extensive wine list includes over 900 selections with a focus on Alsace. Guests can enter the restaurant via its own street level entrance or through the Museum. In addition, The Modern also has the more casual Bar Room available.

"A meal befitting of the sculpture garden, and its varied seasonal offerings of filament and heft. We experienced outstanding service, with a vegetarian diner made to feel exceptionally included - a rarity for fine dining houses in Manhattan. In a party of 4, we found multiple, memorable offerings in appetizer, entree, and desert courses. It was often in the amuse bouche, however, where the intelligence and whimsy of chef Kreuther really stood out. We hope to have more special occasions soon to celebrate at the Modern."

"The Chef's tasting menu was one of the best I've ever had. I would rank this restaurant among my top five ever, joining the ranks of restaurants such as Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London and Tru in Chicago. The food was spectacular and the service impeccable. The wine pairings were daring, and I disagreed with some of them, but it was a good kind of disagreement -- the chance to think through why the sommelier chose a wine and why it worked or did not work."

"They really outdid themselves during our lunch here. Beautiful space in the Modern, and the food is as good as anything in the city. The service is totally professional, knowledgable and spot on. Our service captain Justin was very helpful in guiding us through the menu, wine list, etc. I had poached lobster and it was as good a lobster and presentation as I have ever seen or tasted. Truly outstanding. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation and eat lunch there one day. You will not be disappointed."

"The Modern was a real splurge for lunch, but if you are going to the museum, it provides a wonderful break in between wandering the galleries. The main dining room has a view of the sculpture garden, which was closed during our visit due to snow; rather than people-watching, we had a pristine view. Of course it would be lovely and a bit more serene for dinner after MOMA has closed. The food presentation was gorgeous and suitably modern...a sheet of gold leaf adorned the magnificent appetizer of beet risotto with flounder carpaccio. The duck breast was the best I've ever had, elegantly carved tableside. And the desserts were equally fine and pretty, too. The petits fours included a delectable pate de fruits that I'll never forget."

"The wine list has an interesting section, "gems", which lists wines recommended of great value that won't exceed the price of the dinner. There were two tasting menus which you won't have to order the same as your date, which was great for flexibility (although the chef's menu didn't meet our high expectations.) "I have eaten at a wide variety of Michelin starred restaurants and have never been so disappointed with the quality of cooking. Warm food quickly became stone cold due to its presentation on cold plates, and our main of partridge two ways was awfully cooked, tough and overdone. On an eight course tasting menu only two plates were of suitable quality, and even they were not exceptional. Wine matching was taken, but instead of a tailored approach with wines picked according to course, two wines were presented at a time, and no knowledge was shown by the waiter of the wines or their suitability with each course. I was left drinking a red with my lobster (notably totally overpowered by date chutney) introduced as just some table wine. Awful!"

"Everything about dining at The Modern is luxurious, including the price. Sitting by the window of MOMA's sculpture garden, even on a bleak, late winter's evening, is unique and inspiring and romantic. The staff is professional, courteous, friendly and discrete. And the food? Danny Meyer is New York's most dependable, imaginative, satisfying restauranteur. I ordered seared foie gras as an appetizer and venison for my main course. Bravo! If one appreciates desserts, The Modern is a sweet treat. The "action" is at the bar and in the main dining room. The quiet and opulent dining experience is found in the part of the restaurant which overlooks the garden."

"I have eaten in most of Mr. Myers stores. His restaurants are landmarks of exceptional customer service. However, I find it puzzling that leaving The Modern this past Saturday night, I had nothing to rave about. Service was very good, although the young man (waiter) who took care of us seemed overstated; he gave me the impression of trying too hard. Usually, the staff feels very genuine. So, that was a first. Maybe, he was new. Anyway, service was still excelent. The winter tasting menu on the other hand was very very average. And this was the first time I was disaponted by any of your stores. Like I said: You gave me no reason to rave about this visit."

"My wife and I came for lunch to have an intimate birthday celebration (which I had noted in our on-line reservation). The only hitch in this fabulous meal was on our arrival - tere were several tables for two available, but we were seated at a banquet for five that was quite uncomfortable for just two people. Once we expressed our preference for a smaller table, next to the glass wall to the sculpture garden, it took 5 minutes or more for that table to be set. After being seated at our preferred table, everything else was perfect.
Special Note - at the end of our meal, the waiter brought a beautiful "stacked" dessert of wafers and cream with a single lit candle and "Happy Birthday" scripted in chocolate icing on the plate. Wonderful!"

"We had a lovely table looking out on the sculpture garden. The food was spectacular and the wine was delicious. The Somaliere was truly helpful and the wine we chose complimented our meal perfectly. It was a wedding anniversary we were celebrating and I had made note of that on Open Table. They brought us a special dessert in honor of that. I would recommend it to others and go back again."

"The presentation and quality of food at The Modern were some of the best I've experienced in the city. The canapes, amuse bouche and palate cleanser before desert, along with the petit fours and chocolates at the end of the meal were extremely elaborate and inventive. I highly recommend the tasting menu-- outstanding dishes include the lobster cappuccino and the long island duck. The sommolier was helpful and very down to earth and the service was impeccable. I would highly recommend the dining room for special occasions."

"Restaurant was unable to honor request made at point of reserving table (day before dinner). Special request was to sit in a central and populated area of the restaurant. Instead we were seated in a desolate and isolated area with no people around at all. When we expressed our disappointment with the seating, they were unable to accommodate. For this reason, the service was substandard and I will most likely not return.
The food was good and wait staff very good."

"We went to The Modern for my girlfriend's birthday. I was very glad that everything went smoothly and the attentive staff made our experience very enjoyable. The dinning room with high ceiling and gorgeous flower arrangements was very pleasant. Our entrees of the Long Island duck breast was exceptionally tender and tasty (although we wished there were some cooked green vegetable to go with the meat). Wine by the glass was good but the pour could be a little more generous. Overall, this restaurant deserves a real big thumb up for that special occasion."

"We did the tasting menu with the wine pairings. The service was outstanding. For the wines, they would serve 2 wines at once to go with 2 of the tasting items, so that you could compare a French chardonnay to a california chardonnay with the same food. "The food was uniformly excellent. The preparations were generally light. What seemed to be discordant combinations of ingredients in some dishes worked together perfectly. A good example was the chorizo crusted fish. The space was very contemporary but lovely, and the noise level was quite reasonable at lunch. The drawback at this restaurant is the staff. They are all young and many of them seem inexperienced. They do not act coordinated as a team. Perhaps the worst trait in several is a non-disguised lack of interest in the customers. The front end of this establishment needs a big change. As it is, this is a very nice restaurant worth a visit. With an experienced, attentive staff it could vie for one of the best in the city."

"I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Sleek, contemporary, minimalistic dining room with gorgeous arrangements over-looking the garden/inner plaza of MOMA. "Dining at The Modern is a sybaritic experience. I love this place for the ambiance, exemplary service and creative, artful presentation of the menu. The dining area is sufficiently quiet, while the bar area is lively and vibrant. The evening my guest and I were there, the appetizers and taste treats were delightful, but my guest thought the entrees needed to be more generous, and I had to agree. A reasonably priced, 2005 Triennes St. Auguste, a very drinkable, unpretentious vin rouge, complimented our choices. Both of us thought the desserts were excessive. Too many sweets, OK for a sugaraholics but not for slim, trim New Yorkers. I'll return again."

"My girlfriend and I had an absolutely incredible evening from the moment we stepped in the room until we left many hours later. The service was warm, friendly, and World Class. Our Captain was wonderful, the recommendations of the Sommelier were exceptional, and the food (because in the end that's what it's all about) was one of the greatest dining experiences we have ever had. My tasting was nothing but spectacular and my girlfriend was delighted with the vegetarian tasting created for her by Chef Kreuther.
With the snow falling on the sculpture garden it was truly special.
Conversations regarding the best restaurants in NYC cannot be complete without the inclusion of The Modern."

"We were seated promptly. Our waiter was slightly supercilious but very attentive and provided excellent service throughout the evening. The sommelier was helpful suggesting wines for the meal. We both ordered the Winter Tasting menu and everything was done well. There was quite a bit of annoying noise from the neighboring bar dining area but we could see the waiters making sour faces so we knew we weren't the only ones who were bothered by one person who was overindulging. We were there for 3 hours and loved it, and look forward to coming back."

"Wonderful as always. The food, sevice, and decor are really special. One of my favorite new york city restaurants. The chef is really creative and uses wonderfully fresh and interesting ingredients. Some dishes don't quite work, but most are outstanding. Not quite on the level of Daniel or Per Se, but close. The wine list and pairings are excellent. We had the winter tasting menu and really captured the flavors of winter (and the dishes are little works of art on the plate). I highly recommend the tasting menus. Expensive, but well worth it."

"I've been to this restaurant several times in recent months. Dining here is always a joy for the top shelf food/service/ambiance, but this time I was taken aback to learn they'd noted my food sensitivities. When presenting one of the many delectable amusements that come between courses, the waiter pointed out that my sweetheart's portion contained nutmeg, but, (with a knowing little smile in my direction) that the chef had left it out of mine. That, and the warm "so nice to see you again's" separately from no less than 3 staff I'd enjoyed being served by on previous visits, reaffirmed this as still tops on my list. And I swear, I'm not a celebrity. Last, for a cocktail that will grab your tongue and make it rear up, try the Hinny Kick."

"I've enjoyed a number of great restaurants over the years, but this by far was nothing short of outstanding. The service was stellar, the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and wonderfully pleasant- even appropriately conversational. The food presentation and the dishes themselves were excellent. We had our teenaged sons with us, who appreciate fine restaurants, and they were equally impressed. This is not a restaurant for someone with less than sophisticated tastes, but truly for those who are seeking a great dining experience. Outstanding!"

"I love the setting of The Modern - the sculpture garden, the contemporary dining room, flowers, lighting, etc. The food is artfully presented and some of it is quite good. The prix fixe dinner is a good value, relatively speaking. Unfortunately, the complexity of the preparations doesn't always work and the flavors are sometimes disappointing. The food never looks like you think it will. I also find the whole experience to be just a bit too precious."

"Delicious! It was a delicious meal, very good service (one server was a little stuffy) but an overall wonderful experience. The sommelier helped us navigate the extensive wine list with ease and paired wines with each course.
We took our kids who are very adventurous eaters and were pleased that the wait staff didn't treat us differently because we had kids with us - they were real pros and very personable."

"With The Modern, Danny Meyer has once again proved why he is the tops in the New York dining scene. This is a restaurant to which I have returned time and time again, for lunch and dinner, and have never been disappointed. The service is perfectly executed and the food is inventive, delicious and gorgeously presented. I love having business lunches at The Modern because it's quiet and dining aside the MoMA sculpture garden inspires conversation that goes beyond business. "The Modern is an elegant and aesthetically delightful restaurant. We were fortunate enough to be sitting at a window table, looking out over MOMA's sculpture garden. Thought it must be said the window is an entire wall, and all seats see the garden clearly. The plates, stemware, silverware, even the butter dish and water pitcher are a visual joy. Every morsel of food is well thought out. The portions are suitable for enjoyment not gluttony. For 3 women celebrating a mutual birthday, very special event, it made for a memorable and gracious occasion."

"I was originally turned off by the lacklustre entrance and the hectic bar/cafe area which seem like the Museum cafeteria with the lights dimmed down. Once we were seated in the rear restaurant dining room everything changed. The food was just wonderful and the service likely the best we've ever experienced. Aside from the diverse menu they serve many extra side dishes and intermezzos that make dinner a real dining experience. The cost of the price fixed dinner is very reasonable considering the elaborate meal served and I was especially pleased thatthe wines and drinks were very fairly priced, something one rarely finds in a restaurant of this calibre. Our evening was really an "experience" and we look forard to returning."

"We felt very well welcome from the first moment we entered the restaurant. Although we had to wait for our friends to arrive we were nicely seated and could choice our preference view. Unhappily the level of the noise coming from the bar was much too loud en disturbed our conversations which we think were important, especially appreciating the nice food. The wine was excellent and the service quiet, polite and elegant. It is our second experience and we will try to come again all the way from Brussels/Belgium."

"The restaurant was full with people. We had reservations and still waited for about 10 minutes. The service was very good, all the waiters were very nice (a bit scary nice). We got a small appetizer before every course, and even after the desert we got some chocolates and small sweets. Everything was tasty except for my chorrizo crust cod fish which I got replaced with a great salmon, and my boyfriend had a medicare main course as well.
All in all - great place to eat and celebrate something - definitely go there again."

"Really fantastic. One of the best meals I've ever had. Service is outstanding and very attentive. Dining room is a little like an apple store...noisy with a lot of white. "Great service, great wine list (love the affordable Gems section) and wine steward; poached egg appetizer was superb as were the chocolate pallet and the milk chocolate daquoise for dessert. The duck and hamachi made up our main dishes and while very good they did not rise to the level of truly ourstanding. A nice touch about the Modern is the parade of amusements provided throughout the meal- four additional little appetizers came around and they were a foodie's delight, as was the Alinea-like pre-dessert refresher and the post-dessert cookies, chocolate and then to boot, we were given two delicious pannetone to keep The Modern in mind for a few more days. A lovely experience."

"This is still one of the great restaurants in New York. The setting is simply unmatched, the food and service is excellent (though I would like to see it be a bit more adventurous - it is at MoMA after all), the staff is superb, and the experience is wonderful. Be sure and try for a window table looking out to the garden. That is magic."

"Would every dining experience be so pleasant! We were given a lovely table overlooking the sculpture garden, and the service could not have been better. The food was divine, from the amuse bouche to the final chocolates. Between the celebratory feeling in the restaurant and the view out to all ages interacting with the sculptures it was the sort of memorable meal that made you feel glad to be alive."

"Everything couldn't have been more perfect. The waitstaff were all friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without hovering. The table service and presentation were so artfully done. The utensils and plates were Bauhaus, each dish was prepared and plated with such artistry - along with the view of the sculpture garden, the visual experience was over the top. The food itself was outstanding. The use and balance of unusual ingredients worked together to produce incredible intense flavors and textures. We relaxed, ate and took our time, never rushed over 3 hours. Dinner started and ended with many extras served to us, all a delight and surprise. It's probably the most I've ever spent on dinner for two, but it was worth every memorable penny."

"I have been to "The Modern" several times before. However, this time around, the experience didn't "wow" me as usual. The food was good, but didn't take me to the next level. The wine pairings were good, but didn't enrich my gastronomic experience. The service, which is usually a strong suite, was not as seamless as always. We had this server come to the table several times and abruptly turn away since she realized that she wasn't supposed to be there to begin with. I will go there again since "The Modern" has a special place in my heart, but several other places have overtaken it (like "Picholine" where food and deserts were more imaginative)."

"The food was top notch. Service was great up until the entrees were served. Then my server disappeared and never came back. It was like management cut the floor and left us with the "B" Team. We were one of the last tables served but there was an 8 top that seemed to be doing it up and they were getting plenty of attention by their service team. When our entrees were cleared I asked the back server or bus person what the beans were that accompained the chorizo crusted cod and he said blackbeans. I said "blackbeans"? There was no way they were blackbeans they were red in color. After desserts came which were the low point of the meal I had to wave down one of the other servers to get the check. One of the worst dining eperiences in a while."

"At first the service was a little slow with the left hand not knowing what the right was doing. As the meal arrived the food got better and better as did the service and attention from the staff, especially Luke. Spent nearly three hours over lunch, better food than at the Fat Duck in Bray (England). Would thoroughly recommend it and will return one day. Thank you."

"The Modern provides what I call a "destination" experience... worth the trip just to spend a few hours at MoMA and top it off with a memorable lunch. Lunch was impressive on multiple levels; food, atmosphere and service of course, but it's the attention to details, and the wonderfully friendly service that makes it. A wine suggestion by their sommelier ( a knowledgeable young lady whose name we did not get) was surprising and inventive."

"Came here for lunch with my husband for our wedding anniversary celebration. What a fantastic place! Loved the food, the service, and of course the ambiance. "As always, it was a joy to go there. While there are other restaurants with exceptional food/drinks on a par with The Modern, what sets it apart are the impeccable and cordial service, the unbeatably unique refreshing cocktails, the surprise tidbits, like portobello "popcorn", before each course, the neverending dessert (mmm....have the milk chocolate dacquoise), and last never least, the lemon bread as you leave. It's like Xmas...so many gifts. And all overlooking the MOMA sculpture garden! Please tell me, what more could you ask?"
