The Modern - Dining Room
The Dining Room at The Modern features Chef Gabriel Kreuther’s inspired French-American cuisine, served in a stunning space overlooking MoMA’s Sculpture Garden. Dinner options include an eight-course Tasting Menu or a $98 four-course prix fixe menu with diverse options for each course, while lunch offers a $55 three-course menu. The restaurant also boasts an award-winning wine program as well as a carefully curated list of cocktails, beer and spirits. The Modern’s Dining Room accepts reservations 28 days in advance. The restaurant also includes the vibrant and lively Bar Room (reservations encouraged), and a Bar & Lounge area that welcomes guests on a walk-in basis.

"Thoroughly enjoyed our 4 course prix fixe menu. From amuse bouche to dessert, everything was flavorful and well prepared.
Service was somewhat lackluster. Our server presumptuously recommended that my dining guest change his selections to provide more diversity in texture to his multi-course menu selections. "We heard great things about the Modern at the MOMA and thankfully, every rumor is true - this place is amazing. Have a drink first In the vibrant bar consisting of young professionals and perhaps a few tourists. The bartenders are very accommodating .
The dining experience is incredible starting with the pleasant and knowledgable wait staff and sommelier . The Chef and his staff create amazingly presented and delicious food. The pastry chef desserts are not only delicious but also works of art befitting of the MOMA. All this in a contemporary style atmosphere overlooking the Abby A. Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. What's not to like?!"

"It's not as cozy as Gramercy Tavern but it was a very pleasant place to have a business lunch. Portions are small but the quality is what you would expect from a Danny Meyer restaurant. It's never just about the food at his restaurants. I made the booking but someone else paid. :-)"

"We were seated promptly at a table adjoining the sculpture garden, which added to a nice ambiance. We ordered the Chef's tasting menu with wine pairing. The food was beautifully prepared, and the flavors were elegant and clean. The wine accompaniments were excellent - the wine steward was quite knowledgeable, and the selections complemented the dishes very well. The only drawbacks were that: 1) we didn't have any beverages to accompany the crudites, as we weren't served the first wine until the first course of the tasting menu (had we known that, we would have ordered an aperitif) and 2) the dishes could have been bolder, as the desserts brought the flavor punch that the main entrees lacked. The John Dory was the best dish of the night."

"I hadn't realised when I booked that 'The Modern' is a one star Michelin Restaurant. Compared with other Michelin star restaurants we have eaten at in the UK and in Paris, I would have to say that the food was not of the same standard, although it was very good. The presentation was excellent, and all the little extras added to the overall experience.Both my husband and I felt that the dessert course was the best part of the meal, and we were both very happy with our choices, but we were both a bit disappointed with the quail, which was uninspiring.$38 seemed a bit excessive for a pre dinner glass of champagne, and the overall bill for two including tip was just under $500. For that kind of money, everything should have been spectacular!"

"When we come to NYC from DC, this is our favorite place for lunch. It is always outstanding -- and at an affordable and excellent price!! By the way, the "surprises" that accompany the meal (starter nibbles, chocolate treats, etc.) make it all the more special."

"The Modern never disappoints me. This time I took my whole family and my Mother said it was like nothing she ever experienced in her life. The service, the food, the price. Yes, it is expensive ( my sister said she could have gone to Mexico with what the bill was) but for that special occasion, totally worth every penny in my opinion."

"No chocolate cart?!! After hearing about it for years now, it was conspicuously absent; Was it because it was Mother's Day? I didn't get my little ice cream cone though, I def'ly saw others with those. All of the "extras" I'd heard rants & raves about didn't add up to much in the end; a couple of Ok micro-amuses, a small tray of petit-fours... nothing particularly unusual/exceptional for fine dining, IMHO. Food was very good; a gussied up rendition of what's going on in the Bar Room. To hear TMDR mentioned among contenders for NYC's top restaurant seems rather over the top though. Holiday visit notwithstanding, I'd probably only return to the Bar & only because I really like a couple items they serve. Not so much the scene or service."

"Went for Mother's Day Brunch. Everything was delicious. A little bit too much food - too many little extras. Crazy to be complaining about too much. Not a complaint - it was all wonderful. The little extras kept coming. But the menu items were outstanding. Arctic char was wonderful - the salad - the sardines (altho I didn't get to taste them - my husband inhaled them before we could grab a taste). The steak - the salmon - the quail. THE DESSERTS. The little extra ice cream cone and candies. And the cookies we took home. Enough. We will be back."

"...Prx fixe menu with choices for all four courses and charmingly lovely additions thrown in for entertainment. You can go to a Broadway show, or eat here - or do both at just about twice the cost for decent seats.
The staff is attentive and the pacing perfect. I hope the chef likes the word "wow". Dishes are innovative and presentation somewhat surprising.
For example: seasoned popcorn, with appetizer spoons (raspberry, dark chocolate and cheese on one), mini sourdough baguettes with fresh butter: traditional and goat. The style of the salads, soups and entries was some innocent islands of cheese suoffle or multi-grain concoction or highlighted main ingredient in hand poured soup or sauce. Lovely, tasty, wow-worthy flourishes."

"Arrived @ 5pm & the bar was packed! Every stool, every table, taken. Luckily we had 5:30pm rez & were able to go to our table in the dining room and the view into the museum courtyard is spectacular! The dining captain as well as the servers were not as polished as in other restaurants at this price point. They seemed like the "B" team...in attitude, knowledge, and appearance. I was not impressed w/ the food, 2 dishes were too salty (artic char & the pralines foie gras), another drowning in a sauce that had too much cream/butter (the quail), and the Salmon flavors did not work. The shrimp cru and the sturgeon tart were enjoyable but not great. Danny has great restaurants but when considering only the food, this is not one of them."

"Everything about our recent dinner at The Modern was perfect. We arrived 15 minutes early and were immediately escorted to our table. The waiter, sommelier, and servers were all great with the "just right" balance of friendliness and professionalism.

"This is the second time we have eaten here. The first time we both felt it was the best restaurant we had eaten in. This time our experience was the same. An absolutely wonderful restaurant in terms of the service, the ambiance, and the food, which is excellent, unique, and delicious. We are returning to NYC in June to meet up with friends from the UK and have already promised them a dinner at The Modern. We can hardly wait."

"It is standard in many high end restaurants in NYC to serve extra plates, like amuse-bouche, chocolates or petit fours before or after your ordered meal. The modern was very generous in that sense. I don't even remember how many extra plates we got other than what we ordered and at the end, my friend and I were too full and couldn't even eat the last served item (it was something like smal ice cream cone with citrusy spicy gelato?). Then after paying, they gave us a box of small cakes. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of food/number of plates they serve. We both left the restaurants full and happy."

"I've been meaning to dine at The Modern for years. It will now be my go-to restaurant for any special occasion. We were seated at a sweet two top along the window in the dining room. Service was attentive but never pushy. The meal, wine and extras were impeccable. I hope to be back soon."

"The entire experience was incredible. How many times can you have a fabulous meal overlooking Picasso's and Miros? The restaurant overlooks the outdoor garden of MOMA so it is a constant show of people looking at the amazing Sculptires. The food was excellent as was the service. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. Now The Modern is added to my personal best experience along with Marea and Le Bernadin."

"Overall experience was hurt a bit by a laborous booking and confirmation process. First of all my Open Table booking was canceled twice without explanation - the third one stuck. Then I received a call a week ahead to reming me of my booking, then missed the one two days prior to confirm our booking. After calling back, our reservation had been already canceled and had to postpone it later to the same day. Then the next day, one day prior, another call came in, again for confirming the already once canceled reservation time. At this call they discovered I had now double booking. The food was great and the service very professional, although a bit stiff. Nice touch acknowledging our wedding anniversary though!"

"The restaurant has a beautiful outlook to MOMA gardens And beautiful decor. The bar next door was very busy. A little loud at times. The food was lovely. I really enjoyed the vichyssoise and the cod was cooked perfectly. The service was great, efficient and discreet. The chocolate truffle trolley an unexpected highlight. Would definitely recommend to visit."

"This has to be one of my favorite dining experiences in NYC, as everything was spot on. We had a terrific booth in a beautiful room which overlooked the museum sculpture garden. You can choose a $98 4 course prix fixe or tasting menu, and we went with the prix fixe. After all the starters we were given, and the extra 2 desserts it was starting to be an incredible bargain! Tiny portions across many plates with wonderful, creative and unusual combinations. The chocolate cart after dessert was definitely a highlight. What really stood out, was the amazing service, well orchestrated, friendly and fussy in a good way across the board. The sommelier was outstanding and did some amazing wine pairings for us. Truly Special. Run!"

"My wife and I have had several delightful meals in the bar. Every bite a sensation. So when our Spanish friends (regulars at Bulli), who relied on us for the restaurant selection whenever they visited, we suggested the Modern for their recent visit, emboldened by the recent Times review. The greet and seat staff were warm and welcoming. However, the wait staff were, shall we say, "snooty." No warmth. No humor. No friendliness. Cold. When the servers made their dramatic presentations, their explanations were so sotto voce that we all looked at one another and asked, "What'd they say?" Worst of all, however, the food was totally and disappointingly tasteless. Not one bliss moment. I'm sure Danny would be upset. We all were."
