"I am sad to say that, given my last 3 visits, this will no longer be my "go to" restaurant in Downtown Silver Spring. Indeed, 8407 is losing a loyal patron.
The reasons for this are several: 1) the food has become increasingly bland and 2) the service highly variable (and on my most recent visit, downright terrible). Durng this last, and final, visit, a complaint about main courses coming out before appetizers were finished was followed up by a lovely visit -- 15 minutes later -- from one of the managers -- who might has well have ended his diatribe to me with "you idiot" given how condescending he was. At $60/person, I'll spend my hard earned money somewhere else."

"I took my family here after having a great first experience, but the food wasn't very good this time around. Good sorbet, though.
apps: trio of charcuterie was low on meat and heavy on thick dry bread, calamari was nicely breaded (but poorly paired with their green sauce), steak tartare was was nice but could've used an egg or additional garnish.
entrees: ragu shrunk in size time time - about a cup of noodles + sauce that needed more flavor, duck came with undercooked potatoes, trout was good but eggplant was hard to chew
dessert: banana napoleon was mostly crust and a total of ~ 1/2 inch of banana sliced into 3 pieces and hidden in cream, ginger sorbet was nice and smooth"

"The shrimp & grits is amazing! Everyone's food was great, the restaurant is beautiful with great natural light in most of the areas. The only reason I didn't give 5/5 stars for Service was because it was a little slow to get our first plate, but that is probably because the restuarant opened earlier than usual for Mother's Day. We were tied over by some great beignets anyway. We still left very satisfied and enjoyed our experience. Will definitely be back :)"

"We've dined at 8407 a few times before and enjoyed it - good food, good service. We decided to try the brunch on Mother's Day -- a mistake. Despite being on the late end of service (as most tables should have been wrapping up, not putting orders in), there was a 45-minute wait between our 1st & 2nd courses, and my sunny-side up eggs came out resembling plastic (as though they had been sitting under a heat lamp for 20 min). They replaced my meal, and our waiter told us that between the wait and the eggs, dessert was on the house. For dessert, they brought a completely different sorbet than what we had been told was available (and ordered), and in the end, only my dessert was comped, despite the fact that everyone suffered the same wait."

"I went to 8407 on the recommendation of a co-worker. Its a little quirky finding it because of construction, but once you do the trip is worth it. Our server was great and the food was excellent. It was Mother's Day brunch so it was busy, the only negative I would mention is that we weren't greated upon arrival, which in the grand scheme of things is not that big of a deal."

"We were off to a great start with mixed drinks and appetizers. The fried calamari was lightly breaded and seasoned, and the grits and shrimp dish was delicious. I ordered the lobster, peas and gnocchi special. The sauce was superb but the gnocchi was limp. The strawberry shortcake dessert was fantastic. The atmosphere was lively and friendly. Definitely give 8407 a try."

"Good food; slow kitchen...at least this past Sat. night. I know kitchens have their nights...I worked restaurants for 10+ yrs., from dishwasher to G.M., and I know the business. But you can't be sending out first course just short of an hour after they sit down, regardless the food quality. ...and 1st course was Oysters! Fresh and tasty. Specialty cocktails were also good. Well made.

"A friend of mine and took a third friend to 8407 to comfort her about a problem she was having, to give her a nice treat, to get away from the usual lunch thing, and to have a quiet space to give her a pep talk and help her get ready for a tough experience to come. Every one of those purposes was met. She felt attended to by us and by our server, the food was a VERY nice treat, we felt like we were on vacation for an hour--someplace far away!--and it was quiet enough to have a really good heart to heart to heart talk with each other. Every bit of the food was delectable--beautiful to look at, and scrumptious to eat, and just the right amounts. We had just enough room for creme brulee--crisp on top, creamy beneath--divine!"

"Have been twice and had great meals both times. Fun, interesting drinks and a very innovative menu. The sweetbreads and grilled octopus are outstanding appetizers. The lamb and gnocci were both terrific as well. Kevin at the front bar is amazing...took care of everyone at the front bar and still wowed us with one of a kind drinks. A++. "We were very excited to try out 8407 kitchen bar. The restaurant has a nice decor which exposed brick walls and a good atmosphere. We really liked the quality of the food, it was fresh and very tasty. However, the service was simply not acceptable. After ordering our food, we waited for a very long time for anything to arrive. Eventually we got our entrees - before we received any bread/beignets and before we received our appetizer. After inquiring, our waiter said that the bread/beignets should have been there and that he forgot our appetizer. Of course, we decided then to skip the appetizer. No major apology whatsoever from the waiter! Even when we got the check, he acted like nothing had happened! We were so disappointed!"

"It's a nice restaurant for the Silver Spring dining scene -- for a special night out. The atmosphere is good and there were a variety of customers there when we ate. There's a decent wine selection, although pricey. Most of the food was very good. I particularly enjoyed the steak tartare and the creme brulee, but the ramp tagliatelli was awful. It tasted fine, but the handmade pasta was too thick. It clumped together and was undercooked -- less than al dente -- while still somewhat gummy. The fries, which we didn't try, looked delicious and seemed very popular. The service was excellent and the waiter was prepared to make suggestions for wines in the mid-price range. Overall a good experience, just select food carefully."

"Hidden behind the disaster that is the Silver Spring Transit Center project (will it ever open?), this restaurant is a hidden find. With an eclectic menu and an emphasis on using quality products I have never gone wrong when I go here. This time I had the seared scallops which were fresh, plump, and juicy presented with perfectly prepared baby root vegetables and mashed potatoes. My companion had the strip steak and after a shared bite, I realized that it, too, was right on the money! The wine list is well thought out and the bar staff is known for taking a creative twist to standards. They also are not afraid to take the adventurous step of creating their own new mixes; these have been on target, too."

"We have been to 8407 about 5 times, and three out of 5, we have had excellent food but super slow and not-too-attentive service. This is really sad as, like I said, the food is great. With 8pm reservations the last two times, it seems the wait staff just can't keep up with the crowd and pace for getting drink orders, appetizers, salads too the table. In fact, last time we were there, 45 minutes and had only one drink and no appetizer order taken. In this time, I guarantee our party would have ordered a bottle of wine and/or a few more cocktails, so the bill and tip are suffering for this slow service. Once the crowd dies down, the amazing food comes out, and then the staff is more on top of things. Too little too late, but the food rocks!"

"We really enjoyed this restaurant. Started with calamari and octopus. Would recommend calamari but octopus was very small portion. Dinners were tilefish (wonderful!), scallops (3 of them so if you are hungry don't order) and duck. All were very good. We each had 1-2 drinks...only negative is it is a bit pricey for portions. $60 per person before tax/tip and we split 2 appetizers b/w three people. Would definitely go back."

"My wife and I are semi-regular at 8407 and try to go at least once a month. The drinks are always on point and the food is almost always amazing. For appetizers, we shared a plate of the Octopus, which was prepared perfectly. My wife got the ramp tagliatelle and it was delicious. I felt the waiter was pushing the gnocchi with lobster a little hard but decided to take him up on the recommendation. The dish came with a little too much broth, which made the gnocchi particularly mushy (even for gnocchi). The lobster bits were also quite sparse.
I don't hold it against the restaurant - even Ted Williams didn't bat 1.000 - and I look forward to coming back."

"I had almost given up on finding a great restaurant in Silver Spring which seems to suffer from mediocrity but from the moment I walked in I was more than impressed. The downstairs bar and lounge area was very energetic and filled with people. The "Afterthought" cocktail provided very nice complexity and is what mixology is all about and one of the best crafted cocktails I have had in the DC area. I was pleasantly surprised to find out the staff was responsible for creating the cocktail menu. The upstairs dining area was spacious and wonderfully quaint yet absolutely elegant. Following Bec's (spelling?) suggestions we tried the duck fat fries, the gnocchi and the grouper and added on the deviled eggs. I am incredibly impressed."

"The appetizer we shared (a pasta dish) was not hot-we had to ask 2 times for a cooler for our white wine and although the food tasted good- the portions were very small. (It also really bothers me when the description of a dish includes "pecans" and it really was a tiny amount of "pecan dust" sprinkled sparsely on top- but many restaurants do that)."

"8407 Kitchen Bar is always a good choice. It's easily one of the best restaurants in the DC metro area. The menu is great and our food, scallops for me and smoked trout for her were top notch. Our experience was guided by Richard, a waiter so skilled, attentive, and knowledgeable, the management wisely had business cards made for him. Pro tip: ask the hostess to be seated in his section, as he is a wonderful guide for the culinary adventure that is 8407 kitchen bar."
