Conceptualized as an outgrowth, and a home for Chef Jesse Schenker and Pastry Chef Christina Lee’s Recette Private Dining “underground” supper clubs, “Recette”(recipe in French) pushes boundaries by offering the food demanded in a fine dining experience, but in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Recette is an urban American restaurant that marries traditional and progressive techniques, while manipulating ingredients and temperature to create maximum flavor. We honor the ingredients by refusing to use anything but the best. We adjust the menu seasonally to highlight the availability of these but quality, freshness and consistency in this always remains paramount. The sophisticated yet approachable menu is designed so that diners can order just as they please. With the option to participate in one of three tasting menu options or order from the playful menu of inspired snacks and plates, diners have the ability to customize their Recette experience.
"We had a delicious meal -- as always -- but it was just too hot to really enjoy ourselves. I'm going to have to wait for a cooler evening before I can return."

"This space was the charming, friendly, classically West Village Jarnac once upon a time. We were hoping to fall in love again, or even in like. Dishes are "small plates" and the menu designed so that it appears impossible to assemble a proper meal while the waitstaff tries to steer customers to tasting menus. The dishes try too hard - charred octopus with black bean puree (not bad, but no revelation) . We ordered a bottle of wine we loved and when we asked a second, they had run out and sent something " similar" i.e. more expensive and less good. the bill for four who left hungry was over $500. Some of the other guests were partying with abandon, sports bar style.. Hard to imagine a more unsatisfactory experience."

"The food and service were excellent. The waiter knowledgeable and attentive, we ordered the set menu of 5 courses and our only concern was the food came so fast. Another patron spilled wine on me and they responded with complimentary champagne at the end of our meal. We would recommend to friends and go back ourselves."

"We split a salad and two pasta dishes. The food was delicious but I am getting really tired of waiters in restaurants that serve "small plates" telling me how much I need to order and then cautioning me that I have not ordered enough! It is fine to tell me how many plates people typically order but you should not assume that I am typical!"

"Hostess unfriendly, unable to smile, annoyed that I asked her to check our rain coats. Loud banging music. Too many tables stuffed into small room. I was bumped 20 times during meal. Waiter knowledgable but too hassled. Wine service second class, spilled drops over my menu, irritated that I asked to see cork. However food was fantastic! The chef should come out of the kitchen and clean house."

"The waiter recommendation was to take 3 plates from the main list - most of the table obliged but ordering 3 added up to a starter and two mains. Too much food. Considering the table also ordered snacks to start with this added up to a rather hefty cheque which we didn't feel is in line with recette.
The sweet west village ambiance of the place had a rather unfitting loud rock soundtrack - Beatles, nirvana, cranberries... Great for a trip down memory lane but not the ideal Dinner music."

"We ordered a la carte, and our server told us that since the portions were small we should get three dishes each. The food is quite rich, and the portions were ample, so two dishes each would have been better.
The restaurant is very small, so the tables are unusually close together. It's noisy, and anything said can be heard very clearly at the next table.
The food was fairly good, but not outstanding."

"I went here for brunch with my mother this past Sunday and it exceeded expectations. Our meals were prepared quickly and quite well and tasted fantastic (I had the short rib with eggs). I was informed that reviews usually paint this place as having unfriendly servers and while ours was a bit stoic/aloof, it didn't bother me at all and read as just a more relaxed eating space. Would definitely eat here again."

"We had Brunch last Sunday. The food was really nice as always but the service.........uggg. Not sure if someone didnt show up so one person was covering too many tables or if our guy was just not attentive, but dang........for over $100 for eggs (which I don't mind) i do expect to have somewhat decent service."

"The food was good. Service quite bad. Receiptionist was bored without any welcoming appearance. We were "instructed" to wait at the bar until the last guest of our party arrived (pretty obvious to generate some extra orders). I selected a wine out of the wine list for $69/bottle. We reived the next one on the list (which was a similar wine) for $ 131/bottle, which I haven´t recognized when the bottle was presented to us. When the bill arrived, I asked for it, so it was obviously a misunderstanding (will not say on purpose, but definately the waiter could have asked, if two similar wines of different price categories are so close on the menue). No reaction. No appolgizes. So I payed the bill but felt bad. Not a nice ending."

"Live in the hood and decided to finally try Recette. The food was creative and excellent. Different portion sizes so plentiful if you ordered enough "plates". Service sub par. Any small plate restaurant that encourages sharing should automatically bring clean small plates in between courses. We had to ask for clean plates even initially and the chef who delivered each course acted a bit annoyed and threw the plates on the table without placing one in front of each of us which is the way it is supposed to be done. The waiter was that annoying "too high energy" that makes those in his company a bit anxious. Love the food, dont love the service."

"We visited twice in the last week. The food is outstanding, and the room charming and convivial. The service can be perfunctory--there sometimes is an air of superiority on the part of the waitstaff, unlike the people at the door who are pleasant and welcoming. On our most recent visit, Thursday the 17th, we were given the bill before being asked if we would like coffee or tea."

I started with the yellowtail (so good though I didn't love the Uni) and then had the Rabbit (amazing/great comfort food) and the Beef Carpaccio (the burrata inside was insane!) Other highlights were the spaghetti + the cod fritters... everything was so tasty!
We ended it with the s'mores (SO GOOD!) Overall, it was a treat!"

"Some of the finest fish in the whole city. But bring ear plugs unless you love loud trashy 80s music and even trashier southern rock. Bizarre. Knowlegable staff but careless service. This restaurant is full of disconnects one doesn't expect at this price point. Nothing attentive management could not fix quickly. Feels neglected."

"The food--5-course tasting menu--was marvelous, the service efficient but perfunctory; our servers did not seem particularly interested in doing more than bringing plates to the table. The people at the door are lovely though, and welcoming. Your "Noise" register is curious. Is there nothing worse than energetic? Like "the music was way too loud"?"

"Everything was ok at this restaurant, just nothing spectacular. Food was average, service was average, and ambiance was average. I'm generally used to something a little nicer than this. I gave it a "no" recommendation...not because it was bad...just because nothing about it stood out."

"Great Food, but seriously overpriced... I know it's New York, but 7 tiny portions for over $100. I guess I'm just behind the times, but I've had food that was just as good, creative and fresh and didn't pay nearly this much. You've let you reputation go to your head and it's nuts. The staff was wonderful and the room pleasant, but it's ridiculous to charge so much."

"My wife and I both ordered the tasting menus (one 5 course, one 7 course) and the food was fabulous. The wine pairings were excellent as well. Our waiter did a great job of finding out our likes and dislikes which allowed the chef to tailor the dishes to our tastes. All in all a wonderful experience."

"Poor atmosphere-loud rock music by Metallica, Nirvana, Soundgarden, playing over the speakers. A waiter who kept bumping into my husbands chair throughout the night. Waiter who pushed the tasting menu because the portions are so small, its recommended you order 2 to 3 items off the entree portion-which is not mentioned on the website. I would never go back and will warn others to stay away."

"I really wanted to give Recette a much better review, given that its dishes were among the best I've had all year. This restaurant sits on a desirable West Village corner, its location creating a lovely intimate setting. Yet, it strains for a 1990s rock-and-roll vibe that seems out of character with the room ... and the food -- delicately prepared, but packing surprising flavorful punches. The hostess was brassy, and the server did not have time for us, opting to dote on the much larger table of 10 nearby. We were left to our own devices, so thankfully, the food was amazing. Finally, the wine list had mostly outrageously priced bottles -- with the few affordable ones just pedestrian. Less rock personae, more service please."

"I just love this place! Food is amazing, but we knew that coming in. What I liked the most was the ambiance - relaxed music, mix of the 80s and whatever else you can think of, yet elegant and charming place...

"Delicious food, romantic and cozy atmosphere. Pricey, particularly since the entrees are priced rather high and you're expected to order two of them. (They're fairly small.) But if you're willing to put up the cash, it's an excellent restaurant with a creative and appealing menu, and the dishes don't disappoint."

"The food is truly outstanding at this neighborhood West Village gem. It's got a great ambiance and romantic feeling.
I'm writing this review because I need to share the experience with the service towards the end of our dining experience:
Everything was great - on par from past experiences there. We were seated at 8:30 and by 10:30 our waitress became extremely pushy with presenting the check. In addition to that the staff turned on extremely aggressive music to make their point to clear out the restaurant. There were 3 other tables there and we all got the message loud and clear. All of us had no choice to leave at once. It left us with a very disappointed feeling after such a great initial experience."
