"This was my second time dining at Commis & it is still an outstanding restaurant. I ate here with friends in fall 2011 & had an amazing time. The experience was so good that it was the first place I thought of for Mother's day dinner. Considering that my dinners were a year apart, the kitchen and our server (which happened to be the same on both occasions) recognized that I had dined there before. That made me feel really at home. My mom doesn't often get to eat at fine dining establishments, but her words were "it was a great gastronomic expierience. I enjoyed the spring menu but I think I enjoyed the fall menu more. To be fair, I tend to enjoy fall flavors rather than spring. I love what they do at Commis & highly recommend it to anyone."

"My expectations were high with the Michelin Star award; expectation were not met, primarily in the service aspect. Each of the four servers made a mistake setting the table for the next course. The servers all seemed to be underdressed for a restaurant which I expected to be a special occasion venue rather then a neighborhood gem. The servers all spoke very quickly when describing the plate that had been placed before us, leaving us wondering did we hear that right?
There was one big miss food-wise that evening: the lamb dish was served rare which would have been fine if it didn't accentuate the very gristly cut of meat.
The only choice in the menu is for dessert, and the cheese option added $5 to each meal. Seems a bit petty."

"We went there for my birthday with a couple of friends. We brought two bottles of red wine and a 1/2 bottle of dessert wine. The owner insisted on enforcing the 2-bottle limit, and refused to let us open our dessert wine. That kind of dampened the spirit. The servers never smiled. It's not a warm and happy place to be for special occasions."

"A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Extremely creative food from amuse buche to cheese and dessert, it was soooooooooo good! The wine pairings were fresh, new and often, unexpected - but dazzling. Todd, "the wine guy" was knowledgeable and made a number of unexpected - reallly unusual - choices. (Like a pear cider with cheese) They all worked very well."

"I thought the food was interesting and delicious and the service impeccable. We enjoyed the wine flights tremendously. However the portions were incredibly small. The main course had one sliver of lamb! I would have rated this a 5 if the portions had been just a tiny bit bigger."

After two visits, I am not sure it is for me, either.
The tasting menu is, factually, about exquisite little bites, artfully presented.
Beautiful and delicious as these are, they are mostly just one or two bites, hardly enough to work effectively with the generous wine pairing pours.
The service is attentive and very competent, the serving dishes all unique to their purpose of showcasing the bites.
The distraction of a far too lively auditory space truly impeded my ability to taste the wines or hear my dining companions comfortably. That this significant detraction had been noted before with no effort to correct hints at arrogance in my view.

"Came here to celebrate my BF birthday with expectation for something memorable. Commis did not disappoint from the superb service to the amazing food and wine pairing (thank you Todd and other staff members!!). All the courses were fresh, unique and tasty and although each course in itself was modest, the entire meal was exceptionally satisfying. Can't wait to try again when the menu changes."

"Commis has earned its Michelin stars. My husband and I had 10 items plus an extra dessert item at the end for $75 each, as well as wine pairing for $45. For the quality of the food, the price was reasonable. We really enjoyed the dinner because there were some very interesting items like a slow poached farm egg with sweet and savory spices. Even an unusual dessert like parsnip mousse and parsley ice milk as dessert worked well, something I was skeptical about. Commis has gotten better every time we go. We understand why the portions are small with such a menu, but we have to say that we were a little bit hungry later into the evening after this meal. One should not have to be hungry after a 10 course meal."

"At $75 for a meal, it may be hard for some to consider Commis "baragain" for a meal, yet nevertheless, that is what the restaurant provides. If you were to A. Get this meal somewhere else, or B. Try to do it yourself, you would be stuck in between the truly unaffordable and the seemingly impossible. Every time I go, I feel as if I've been transported to a food newtork cooking competition only to have the non-winning dishes screened out prior to reaching my table."

"It has been a while since my first visit to Commis, and it's great to see how much things have progressed. I thought it was fantastic before but this visit blew my mind! I was accompanied by a couple of difficult to please foodie friends and they were duly impressed as well. The one dish that I really wanted was the signature egg dish, it was different from the last time I had it, but equally impressive. We had the wine pairings with dinner and found the pours to be very generous.
All in all it was an awesome dinner and my entire group loved every moment. We left wanting more!"

"The food is beautiful. The flavors are wonderful. The portions are really ridiculously small. We had a beef dish that had 1 small slice of beef. It was like eating a succession of amuse bouche. Probably wouldn't return because it was overall not very satisfying, though the service was excellent."

"Great service! The servers were attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite dish was the poaced farm egg. It was very tasty. All the dishes were really good and the presentation is impressive. I didn't care for the cara cara orange pudding. Keep the bread warm and toasty. Worth going back."

"This is the place to go when you want to see what can be done by a talented group of food artists with ingredients that are fresh and available that day. It isn't for a casual meal and there is no menu. Instead, prepare for a safe but adventurous trip through a creative and flavorful tasting menu that will give you plenty to talk about. Don't show up starving--the portions are too small for that--although there was bread and butter after the first few courses which helped allay our hunger pangs. Consider splurging on the wine pairings--you'll get to try some very interesting vintages. This is a great place to try for a special occasion with a partner or group that loves to try new foods and wines."

"The wine list was excellent, as was the staff's wine knowledge & service. We were impressed w/ the wine parings.
In all honesty, there just wasn't enough food was served. It felt like everything was a sample; a nibble of this, a spoonful of that, etc. I don't recall anything served to us being more than 2-3 tablespoons of substance. To be fair, the soup was probably 4 tablespoons.
What they did serve was pretty interesting and tasty, but I wouldn't recommend it as a place to go when you're hungry. Foodies will surely appreciate it, but normal people will need to find someplace else to eat afterwards like my wife and I did. Considering the cost, we were left wanting more."

"As expected, all details were meticulously delivered. Unexpected was the absolute delight and creativity each dish, whith it's own unique character, added to the story of the meal.
The staff was informative, friendly, polite, and so professional. After eating at the chefs table, I had even more appreciatation for the thought and the work each member of the team executed to create what was truly a masterpiece."

"You are served a fixed set of tasting plates. (They ask you about any food issues you may have, such as allergies.) We did not ask for the printed menu before hand but I assume one would have been provided. All plates were excellent. For one plate I joked to the waiter that I could eat four of them so they served it to me again complimentary. Syhabout is a great chef. The cost of a gourmet dinner here ($75 without drinks) is truly a bargain."

"Stood for more than ten minutes waiting for a table, although tables were available. The small plates that followed our eventual seating seemed to me California cuisine on steroids--over-fussed and over-worked and over-the-top. It was practically a satire on California, my home and home of the wonderful Alice Waters food movement. But like boring films that win top reviews, Commis apparently wowed the reviewers by having its chefs prepare strange dishes with odd flavors that didn't quite marry. Disappointing. The one pleasant surprise was the pinot noir we drank--excellent and not over-priced. Still, we won't be going back."

"A VERY disappointing experience in many ways. Some of the ways:
1. It was my wife's 60th and there was a very nice card on the table awaiting us--that was the best part of the meal.
2. I notified restaurant my wife was gluten-free; so what is first thing they bring us: bread. Then brought another bread course with no substitute for my wife so she had to sit and watch me eat.
3. The tasting courses are all too small,but that was probably okay since only two of the courses were tasty. Very pretentious, but not tasty.
4. My daughter asked me afterward if we had told them the meal was not to our satisfaction and I realized that no one even bothered to ask. It's the sort of place where if you don't like it, it must be YOUR fault"
