"We arrived and were offered a small table in the window, barely adequate for 4 people. We had to argue to be seated in at a better table. The restaurant was not full. Our waiter was terrible. We left a tip and the restaurant took more than we signed for."

"We picked this restaurant based on the unique concept of Indian Latin fusion and we were thrilled with the combo. The ribs were to die for and the steak special was one of the best my friend has tasted. The waiter was charming and attentive and knew how to describe all the dishes. All in all it was delicious.
My only request is to go more exotic on the cocktails to match that of the food."

"Great Indian, but didn't get much of the Latin influence. The scallop appetizer was out of this world and the Lobster Portuguese was amazing. Not a very extensive wine list, but decent wines. Service was very good."

"Overall the place was nice. We had a 7:30 reservation and the place was only half full. I have heard mixed reviews about the service albeit ours was pretty good. Ambiance is nice. Great decor. I am torn on the food. Had the scallop appetizer which was fantastic. My gal had the vegetarian chili-glazed blackened eggplant. Also a very delicious dish. I had one of the monthly specials...lamb enchiladas. Bland. Lacked any flavor (even wasn't properly salted). It had been overcooked. The tortillas were crisp (burnt) on the bottom. They reminded me of a microwaved meal. For a place that is Indian Latin infusion nothing should be "bland". Service was pretty good. Overall they nailed 2 out of the 3 dishes and everything went well."

"The uniqueness of the menu was quite intriguing. I found the artichoke pakoras to be excellent. The main was good, but teetered dangerously close to having too many flavors competing on a single plate. The mole on the duck was quite delicious, with the tamarind adding a zingy tartness to the traditional, tasty mole sauce. The cucumber slaw was very nice, but the quinoa was more salty than I prefer. Overall, a nice dinner and could be improved even more with a little editing of flavor pairings."

"Wonderful fusion of indian and latin american flavors! My friend and I had an appetizer size of one of their latin american/indian fusion dishes (skirt steak), and it was fabulous!! We didn't have any of the small plates, but they definitely looked appetizing as well. We dove right into their "classic Indian dishes". We had the spinach and other greens dish and the lamb shank dish- both were good, but perhaps under seasoned especially for classic indian dishes...the traditional indian dessert with rice pudding/custard was very yummy as well as the "cardamon flan"- both didn't disappoint. BTW- their cocktails are extremely creative- we had enjoyed yummy cocktails..."

"This was the forth time dining here over 2 years. Food is always good but often luke warm and extremely slow to arrive. We were there an hour and had only received appetizers. This place has exceptional potential but simply needs better management and execution."

"We are very disappointed. Our reservation, for 4, was booked over two weeks in advance with a request for a booth (it was a significant birthday celebration). Upon arrival we were seated at a regular table and when asked about the open booth, we were told it was reserved for a party of 6. However, 5 mins later a party of 4 was then seated there. We were extremely annoyed and frustrated about being lied to. Our food took 45 mins to arrive and was not consistent. The taste was off and the portions were inconsistent, one dish literally had about 20 grains of rice when it used to come with a bowl of rice.
I can truly say that a night which was suppose to be a celebration was a disaster. I would not recommend for any special occasion."

"This is a wonderful place, with some great food. It's a bit loud so not ideal for a first date but nice for a date night. The ribs are amazing. The food is prepared with authentic taste but without the ton of carbs seen in traditional Indian food. Overall it was a great experience and I plan to return soon."

"I've eaten at Vermilion four times since it opened. It promised a novel menu -- particularly for River North, which has many fine restaurants but they fall into a narrow range. "Pleasant ambience. Nice waitstaff. Food sounded interesting, but every dish tasted as if it had been seasoned with the same spice blend. Loved the jalapeno-pear cocktail (be warned, it's spicy) and the ginger-lime margarita. But after enjoying appetizers and entrees with identical spice profiles in each dish, we opted to skip dessert. Love the concept. And that spice profile was good...just didn't need it in every bite of everything....Execution needs work. :-)"

"I picked Vermilion to entertain a friend and frequent restaurant diner visiting from NY. As I hoped, the unusual fusion menu piqued his interest and his taste buds. "I was a little scared to come here on a first date due to some of the reviews. The reviews had Vermilion a hit or miss. And I hadn't been in years so I couldn't base it on my last experience which was very good, things could have changed. Well I am glad that I took the chance, they were definitely a HIT. Service was perfect throughout the night starting from the moment we walked in. The table we sat at was for 2 right upfront near the window. The table was extremely eclectic and was perfect for trying to impress the lady I was with. The candle on the table had real rose pedals around it. It was awesome. Finally the food was really good. We thought that our appetizers were just good. But the main course and dessert...OUTSTANDING!"

"I was a solo diner on a business trip. Came early (5:30pm) and got a nice window seat with great, attentive service. The complete tasting course is a good deal and I left after about 2 hours with a substantial doggie bag (which made a great breakfast). I live in Southern California and am fairly familiar with Latin Fusion food and I arrived at Vermillion after a month in India and I can say, unequivocally, this restaurant has one of the most creative chefs on the planet today."

"Sorry to say that the food was really badly cooked. In the breads (Naan), uncooked sides were clearly visible. Some other Naan peices were as thick as 2 to 3 times the normal and again totally uncooked from inside.
In the Saag Paneer (Cottage Cheese) the cottage cheese had been deep fried and was brown in color and hard and clearly reheated and not freshly cooked.
Also it is very rare in any Indian restaurant (even if one labels it "fusion"), that no onions, papad, chutneys will be served unless you pay US$ 4 per request. The restaurant expects to charge US$ 4 for each of these things by calling them "side dishes". Since when has mint chutney become a side dish."

"Great fusion of Indian and Latin American. Don't go if you are a purist for traditional Indian food. Go if you want to have your taste buds to light up with soem pretty interesting flvors.
I'm not one for cocktails, but the list was both impressive and tempting. My ginger pomegranate martini was a particularly fragrant way to start the meal. The tapas/appetizers were all interesting although I would ahve like to see even more combinations. The duck vindaloo arepas were excellent and built a nice heat for the rest of the meal and the verdant tropical salad was a spicy segway into the main courses. The chili-glazed blackened tamarind ribs were sensational and the braised duck in michoacan mole was not far behind."

"Our second visit after a great initial experience a few months ago. Waiter was not close to begin on par with one from last time, who was terrific. I assumed they charged corkage and brought my own bottle, but was disappointed when I was told no. What I picked would've been perfect for this type of cuisine, so I was bummed. all of our dishes were delicious, expect for my entree, which was the fish curry. It tasted fishy and basically a small portion of fish and gravy on top of a heaping portion of a heavy, rich potato-like starch. I would not order this again unless I needed a week's worth of carbs. Otherwise, we had a great evening."

"Wonderful experience. Re:The tasting menu - would have like to have been informed how much food the last plate had on it. Was a surprise and we'd ordered appetiser and bread Not knowing the quantites build. All in all we enjoyed the meal and ambiance emmmensly."

"The server asked: "Are WE ready to order?" The server isn't eating with us, so why say "we"? We had two servings of the crab cakes. Mine smelled "fishy" when it was put in front of me. I shared part of it with a fellow diner, though warned her it smelled fishy, thinking maybe it was "me." I took a bite, there was something wrong with it and confirmed by the other diner. I informed the server and she took it back and offered another dish, artichoke something, which unfortunately was disappointing and obviously unmemorable. The other crab cake was fine, no issues, though pretty bland. The lentil soup was great. I had a steak that was good and the ribs were excellent."

"I have never tasted such flavor combinations. The 5 course tasting menu was phenomenal. I wanted to continue eating more selections from the menu. The ambiance was hip, modern. The service staff was attentive and professional - very helpful with understanding the dishes presented to me."

"Went pre-theater. Server was very good and accommodated for one diner who didn't like things as spicy. Artichoke fritters were very good. Salmon/lobster cake a bit more spicy than expected. Butter chicken and shrimp curry very good. Atmosphere was wonderful and noise level was very good at that early time until they started setting up a table in room on other side of curtains, which was noisy and a bit loud for awhile (only real down side of our experience). Prices a bit high."

"I was there on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was pretty dead (3-4 tables). The bartender who was also my server was fantastic. The lamb chops appetizer are some of the best I've ever had. The skirt steak was pretty good and the dessert was amazing."

"So many things seemed to go wrong for our party of 5. The entire staff seemed like they did not want to be at work this particular evening. My wife ordered an entree that claimed it would be prepared table side and it was not.
Our waitress would come over periodically and ask a question like, "how is everything" and then disapear before an answer. It became a running joke with us. At the end of the night we had asked for 3 separate checks. We got 5. I asked that my 3 checks be combined to one and both the waitress and manager seemed dumbfounded by this request. I had 3 checks for my 1 beer, 1 wine, 1 appetizer and 2 entrees???
After being told over and over that, "there is nothing we can do" we left extremely frustrated and angry."

"We've gone to Vermillion several times over the last year, and have always had great food and service. For date night last night, we decided to go again, despite what appeared to be a recent trend of negative feedback on OpenTable & Yelp (our two trusted sources for dining recommendations). We were pleasantly unsurprised to find the same excellent service and food that we've had in the past, and had an absolutely lovely evening. The best compliment I've heard paid to Vermillion was from a work colleague of mine visiting from India. After I took him to Vermillion, he's been recommending to all his colleagues visiting Chicago from India."

"Despite initial reservations as we entered, the meal here was very good with excellent service. I think there was a bit of a rush and they were understaffed as initially there was no one to greet us and seat us from the door. Also, once we sat down, there was a long pause between drinks and ordering. But after that, the food was marvelous with excellent quality and surprisingly filling for tapas which I often find over-priced and small in amount."

"Food is mediocre. Extremely overpriced. They ended up charging us for ordering a little butter on the side ($4). I think that is ridiculous. Mango mint mojito was watered down. $12 for a watered down drink is too much. Each entree includes naan which it should as the entrees are priced over $20 and quantity is enough only for one person. But the quantity of naan with each entree is a joke. Ambiance was good."
