"With our reservations through OpenTable, we were seated promptly despite the crowd. Our server was friendly, and as prompt as the bustling atmosphere would allow. Our food was excellent. Our scallops & fried oysters were truly superbly prepared, and our server suggested splitting a house salad, which allowed us a bit of green without spoiling our appetites our entrees. This place has been here for many years now, and is still a very popular spot. I would recommend it heartily."

"My wife and I met another couple at Coastal Grill before the Rush concert on a Sunday night. We got there around 5:30, so we were one of the first tables seated. The smaller menu was complemented by at least ten daily specials, including fresh oysters on the half shell - which were delectable, served on a bed of ice with lemon, cocktail sauce and garlic vinegar. Two had the grilled salmon special which came with lemon rosemary butter. I had grilled leg of lamb, which was excellent - not at all gamey. None of us had dessert. Overall I will think of Coastal the next time I am in Virginia Beach. It was a great find, thanks to OpenTable."

"The crowd is of the much older variety. There's nothing wrong with that; I just mention it. It's very dark inside and if you sit facing a window anywhere near sunset you will be blinded from outside light and be able to see nothing in the restaurant. Food is fair, but certainly nothing great. If you don't like seafood, don't come here! There are only maybe 2-3 other types of dishes. Oh, and don't bother leaving special requests on you open table reservation; they won't honor it. I merely asked that they wish my mother a happy birthday. Simple enough, you'd think, but apparently not."

"A locals place.The 6 appetizers & 6 entrees in addition to the limited menu should have been printed on paper--with prices too. Everything was garnished with large branches of parsley/coriander. Fried & raw oysters were good. Tuna was half good, half chewy & unedible; had to scrape burned garnish off grilled salmon; side potatoes were charred black. Shrimp & grits were okay. Acorn squash was a specialty, served with a pool of unmelted brown sugar instead of a glaze. Profiteroles were drowned in an ocean of chocolate sauce. Seems like the kitchen needs a sense of proportion. Too crowded & chairs uncomfortable. Noise level was so high we had to shout to one another."

"This was the best meal I have had in a long time and I go out every week to try a different local restaurant. They have lots of selections as well as off menu items. I had tuna which can be tricky to get right and they did. The acorn squash was perfect and an unusual find and the salad greens were special with a terrific dressing. Plus, they serve excellent bread with slabs of butter. I am going back in another week with out of town guests. The atmosphere was casual, the wait staff friendly along with good meal presentation and service timing. This is my new favorite place in Virginia Beach!"

"A Virginia Beach classic. I had been there many times before , but not in years. My guest had never been there -- she loved it -- the acorn squash is to die for! my favorite waitress was still there after many years-- unbelievable in this business. The only thing i would suggest is more vegetarian dishes . The kitchen will do a vegetarian plate with what they have -- but it would be nice to have some specific vegetarian dishes. It is getting pricey on the entries , but the food is fresh, local when available, and dependable!!! enjoy.. we will again."

"Since the early 90's I have, when back in Virginia Beach, eaten at the Coastal Grill. I enjoy the ambiance of the place, the food, the staff, and the kitchen staff. While I find the food and drinks at the Coastal Grill to be great, I continue to be amazed at their ability to put out a consistently great product and consistently pay attention to the many details. It is not easy to do that and requires good management and leadership in the back of the house, and good trained people working in the front of the house.

"We celebrated our 25th anniversary with friends here. The food and service were fantastic! We requested a selection of non-alchohol cocktails from recipes that we provided. The bar did an outstanding job! The owner was very responsive to all our request and the service was the best that I've experiences in along time (unobstrusive and attentive)."

"The place is small and cozy but the food was great and the staff was so welcoming and had great suggestions for both the wine and dinner. Great place to go if you want a nice romantic dinner or just with a small group of friends. We even took our 9 year old with us and he loved the food!"
