BIX
An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

"Bix has great service, drinks and food. It's got an old-school feel to the entrance (side alleyway), the architecture and the menu as well; food is a blend of the old and new (think Sinatra meets Harry Connick Jr., but with a little more soul), and the Bar can mix up anything you need.
Check the site for the nightly music - they have some really great trios and singers... it can get a little loud inside this converted old bank, so if you want a quiet dinner, you should go before the players begin. Once they start playing, the acoustics make it a bit hard to talk, though they will take breaks from time to time."

"I have been here a few times and love the art deco / jazz venue. Nice live piano. The one weak spot always seems to be the food. It is good, but for the prices it is not great and just doesn't measure up to some of the other finer restaurants. The staff was friendly, but the service felt rushed. I'm giving it a marginal 4 star rating."

"This is a classy place. Located on a narrow lane, paneled in rich looking wood, with impeccable service. This is elegant dining of the old school style. The quality and selection of food and drink is good. The only low spot was my wife's sole was too salty to eat, but the waiter took it away and brought a different entree. My daughter (28 years old), said that the burger was the best she ever had. Of course, at $28 it was the most expensive she'd ever had. I had the pork loin and pork belly combo. The portions were small, but very tasty and perfectly cooked. The bread pudding was decadent and delicious for dessert. Valet parking is available. We parked on a nearby street with no problem on a Sunday night."

"If you feel like laying down some major bucks for great food, this is the place. Gorgeous space and friendly attentive service are all part of the experience. The food takes a creative spin on American classics.
The only real issue I take with the place is the noise level. It's a very popular bar scene that gets so loud it's hard to hear the jazz band let alone the conversation at your table."

"Boy do we love this place! My husband and I were visiting from the UK and found this little gem.
The food was fantastic the wine superb and the live effortless voice of the in house singer made the atmosphere perfect.
The first night I had the crab rolls and the duck which was exquisite. We also had an oyster course with some of the freshest oysters I've ever tasted.
Night two I had the ceviche and bavette for main course the tastes were beautiful. The portions are European size but less us definitely more. It was welcome break from the tasteless excess of the restaurants in fishermans wharf.

"I'm a vegetarian and the waiters at Bix were courteous enough to provide a vegetarian friendly custom made entrees.
Potato pillows with Crème fraîche and American Caviar was yummier than they sound. They just melted in my mouth.
Yummy Butter Lettuce - very tasty.
Brussel sprouts with lemon and olive oil - very tasty.
Can't go wrong with Spaghetti with Fava beans, some greens and parmasean. It was a custom made entree for me.

"The live music is quickly drowned out by the noise eminating from the financial district drones that fill the tables. While the food was excellent as was the service, it was so noisy that even our waiter had trouble taking our order. I was expecting someplace where people actually come for the music as its a big selling point on the website. Probably wont ever come back. Total cost for a modest dinner for two and parking was about $200."

"I always feel like I'm transported to the Gold Rush Era whenever I eat in BiX. The atmosphere is the best part of this restaurant: the bar scene is very vibrant and the tiered level elegance of the entire dining room makes me feel like I'm in a scene for the Great Gatsby. The food is very good as well. Be warned, however: it is excruciatingly noisy in this place. This is NOT for dinner parties that want to have nice conversations. There is a jazz trio on the weekends, which actually brings the noise level down one decibel, but they don't start playing until 8:30 PM."

"Great room: high ceilings, live jazz trio and bar scene make it a shot right out of movie. Cocktail menu lists a Negroni -- my fave drink! But the bartender shook and bruised it (recipe calls to stir, not shake). But the food was the real disappointment. Appetizers were the least of the offenders: the potato pillows with caviar were delightful. The deviled eggs ok, and the crab on brioche, tasty. We shared an appetizer-sized lobster pasta for $24 (the entree size was $48!) that proved a huge disappointment: over-salted and only three tiny bits of lobster in each bowl, we sent it back. They made it again but this time it was bland. Fish course was salty and bland too. Net net: go there for a drink and to flirt but have dinner elsewhere."

"BIX has been a personal go-to spot for lively evenings out with good friends and good food. The live jazz here is always a blast. A before-dinner Sazerac is practically required drinking, but we've discovered via process of elimination that pretty much everything on the cocktail menu is not only drinkable, but delicious. The appetizers are designed to be shared, and feature a pretty wide array of delectable finger foods. Our main courses—the duck and the swordfish—were perfectly prepared, and there was plenty to go around. Bananas Foster rounded out the meal, leaving us stuffed and satisfied. Those longing for a taste of the New Orleans experience in San Francisco will feel right at home."

"We went to Bix for my husband's 40th birthday before a night out in North Beach. We live in SF and are near all the hotspots off Valencia. I love walking down the alley and all of a sudden Friday night bar crowd is laughing and having drinks. You are not rushed through your meal. We were there two hours. We have stopped by there before for just a late night drink and bananas foster at the bar. We save it for a special occasion so we can go all out and order starters, salads, entrees, bottle of wine and dessert with no care."

"Unfortunately, I screwed up a 6 person reservation by booking it for Friday night versus Saturday night on the Open Table app. So when we showed up on Saturday night, we obviously did not have a table. The 2 other couples I was with had never met each other so I was scrambling to find somewhere else in the neighborhood. The GM came out, greeted us personally, and assured us that everything would be taken care of. He personally brought out some small bites to eat compliments of the house and got us a table put together in about 30 mins. The food is amazing. The service is top notch. Very impressed."
