An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. "Awful, awful, awful!!! Food was ok, but severely overpriced. Service was horrific. The waiter and hostess were condescending, rude, and all around unpleasant. I would rather have my entire body waxed than ever return to this joke of a restaurant. Don't let the website fool you, this place is not romantic! It was a real lowlight to our anniversary weekend."

"We started with their crab cake roll for the table. It was delicious!! Then moved on to our baby lettuce salad with fresh strawberries. The amount of dressing was just right, not overdone nor underdressed. The flavor was fresh, organic, refreshing! Then for main entree, I had the braised short ribs with spring vegetables, marble potatoes, bone marrow and toast with mustard. Everthing was delicious! The short ribs and the spring vegetables were flavorful. The short ribs were tender. The bone marrow portion was a bit generous and rich for me, but it paired well with the mustard toast. My friend had the lobster spaghatti. It looked delicious and she confirmed the taste was exquisite as well! Had Warm Chocolate bread pudding, great!"

"It was my first time at Bix, and I was also alone as I was traveling through the city and heard great things about this place. The food here was excellent, and the service was phenomenal. I ordered 3 appetizers, rather than doing a 3 course as I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it, and the staff was very accomodating, and allowed me to enjoy each dish with sufficient time. The music was a bonus, and it was a lovely evening overall!"

"Everything was perfect. The food was amazing, the staff was great. We probably had the best table in the place. A corner booth with no tables between us and the piano. It was perfect. Only negative part is that we were celebrating a birthday and had to wait almost 30 minutes to be sat...with reservations. I will say that they were very attentive to the matter and gave us a free appetizer as an apology!
Definitely would go back for the lobster spaghetti. Oh my."

"When does a little noterarity and a good location just become a little too taken for granted? Arriving a few minutes late, we ordered from the bar, and waited, and waited attempting eye contact with the bartender who just never re-connected us to drinks he had prepared. We were asked to be seated and reminded the hostess of our drinks, a booth style tucked in the corner and the jazz trio played along nicely. The hostess never returned with the drinks. It became a silly and somewhat cruel joke, the lost drinks. Along came the waiter, who oddly never made eye contact. Oysters, we hope would solve all our despairs. A plate of one dozen arrived that might have been 3 actual oysters. And 9 of someone else's left over shells. Another cruel joke."

"Fantastic restaurant. Really special. We were there to celebrate my daughter's birthday and we had a special table and a note to her waiting for us on our table. Worthwhile letting them know ahead of time that it was a special occasion. Food was special. Only complaint is the music started late 8:30 and we didn't know that, our reservation was at 7."

"THis is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The service and atmosphere are top notch. The bar is fantastic. The food is excellent if maybe not the most exciting. "Although the food looks delectable and the menu, tantalizing, both my friend and I found the flavors to be wanting and the portions surprisingly SMALL, although gorgeously presented. The sommelier seemed uncommitted. We came to eat and enjoy ourselves, which we did (for about $280). I like Bix--have been a customer since it opened nearly 20-yrs ago--but the food has gone downhill."

"What a neat place! My smoked trout dish was delicious!! But the appetizer and bread were not as spectacular, which is why I gave a "very good" rating for the food. The wait staff were all very nice, but did weird reaching things when pouring water and serving the food. I found that very strange considering the atmosphere and the menu."

"Had not been to BIX since we moved to San Francisco, and remember it as a great spot for a cocktail...and that is what I would say now after having been for dinner. Had a 6:30 reservation, asked to be moved to a table upstairs, hostess stressed innumerable times that we must be out and gone by 8, as they had another party at that table then. We got it the message loud and clear.

"Dined at BIX on a recent trip to San Francisco. We arrived for an early dinner on a Thursday night, so did not take in jaz pianist slated to play from 8:30pm on. Enjoyed the food; service was attentive / friendly; and the ambiance very interesting, given the historical architecture and layout of the dining room (we dined on the mezzanine level). Would recommend dining here."

"The cocktails were great and the restaurant had an overall romantic speakeasy 40s feel. The food was rather disappointing. The signature chicken hash was like a chicken style fishstick or not so great crabcake. My girlfriend has been wanting to go here for a while and we were both disappointed in the food and having to wave down the server on a Saturday night in such an establishment."

"Bix is a San Francisco classic. Always good ambiance. And the food staples are consistently a hit. Perhaps it was because our party size was large (10 of us), but service was mediocre at best. First, the reservation was for 10, but when we got to the table, 9 table settings were placed, and while mistakes happen, the person who seated us appeared annoyed since she was apparently told there were only 9 in our party. Secondly, drink service was poor. Only twice (over 2.5 hours) did anyone come around to fill our water, and only once did our waiter take drink orders. My girlfriend ordered an iced tea, which never came, and it was difficult to find someone to track down. The waiter visibly looked disappointed when we did not buy wine."

"Through a black door in a windowless brick wall in an unprepossessing alley in the Jackson Square historic discrict, you step into one of San Francisco's gems -- two stories high with silvered Greek revival columns, polished mahogany, snowy linens, soft lighting, gigantic jazz age mural behind the bar... Time for a traditional (or not so) cocktail and a just-right meal. On my recent vist for lunch (which is only served on Fridays), service was competent, timely and unobtrusive, and my Cobb Salad was an excellent rendition of this classic."

"The food at BIx is excellent. Each dish was made to perfection, delicious. Food presentation, amazing. Love the ambalance of the resturant. Sadly, the same can not be said about the staff. The gentleman that took our coats was very gracious. Unfortuinely, friendly service stopped with him. If you are a "Foodie," and only interested in presentation and delicious food, BIX would be an excellant choice. I would not recomend going for a special occasion, group event, or over-all dining experience. From bar to table, the staff was cold, and made us feel unwelcomed. Very uncomfortable. Instead of guest, we felt like intruders. With so many choices, in such a beautiful, friendly city, we will not be recomending or returning to BIX."

"While the food is wonderful, the best dishes come from the 'for the table' menu. The main courses are good, but nothing particularly out of the ordinary. Live jazz trio played when we were there on Saturday night. The only problem we had was that the table we were intended to sit at was a great location, so the party before us took their time. We had a reservation but ended up waiting 40 minutes past our reservation time. The manager was very kind and had some appetizers brought immediately when we sat down. To me this shows how great the atmosphere is, and how exceptional the service is. My favorite menu items are the potato pillows, the crab with brioche, sweet onion and truffled cheese croques, and the steak tartare. Highly recommended!"

"Entering Bix is like walking back into the Casablanca world. The jazz was fun and the decor was sparkling. The special cocktails add to the glamour. The food however is not the main theme. Our meals were just fine but not exceptional. I had a tartare night beginning with the salmon tartare. It was parceled onto four cracker squares and a bit greasy. The beef tartare was prepared table side with great flair and was much better, fresher tasting and could be added to crusty bread or not. My husband had the lobster pasta dish which was good but not great. At times the noise of the restaurant drowned out the charming vocalist."

"This particular Friday evening the bar was four-deep at 7 PM and the noise level was "shout to your partner" loud. The hostess said that a large group came in for drinks unexpectedly, but she and the wait staff soldiered on with poise regardless. Our table at the second level at least got our party of three friends away from the crush of people, and as we enjoyed a leisurely discussion over dinner it gradually became easier to have a conversation. Food and service all quite good. Love the atmosphere. I would return and hope for a little less distraction from the bar area."
