Review 6 for Meritage at the Claremont
Overall Rating
(Very Good)
"The Meritage is has a quiet and elegant setting with a beautiful view and good food. The option of having almost all the dishes as either a small or large plate is a great feature. The only negative is that the sea scallops entree, which is a featured item on both the regular menu and was one of the specials for the day, although very well prepared, had a distinct salty, soapy flavor that was noticeable despite a very nice sauce. This indicates that the scallops had been treated with a chemical preservative and were not the better quality "dry" scallops. At $28 for the entree sized plate, you would expect a better quality scallop."

"We had a window-side table with spectacular views of the Bay Bridge and the sunset. putting us in a mellow mood to enjoy the food, which was very good, even though the choice of the small portion alternatives to most dishes is really small. The presentation on the plates complemented both the spectacular scenery outside and the subtle symphony of tastes in the seared scallops with the celery root puree and the Atlantic salmon with the horseradish crust I sampled for my dinner. I liked the fact that wines were paired with each item on the menu, though I didn't chose that option for my choice of wine with dinner. The dessert was absolutely fabulous, infused with the taste of parsnip as it was."

"Lobster ravioli paired with Piper champagne, short ribs paired with Opus One, and a chocolate souffle -- Stupendous! I would love to eat like that every night, but at $50 bucks for a glass of wine, albeit well worth it, I might have to save those nights for special occasions. I must say I am completely obsessed with the Opus One, which may very well be the best wine I have ever tasted."

"We had a great dinner experience with our out-of-town guests from Europe. The service was very good. What we like most are the small portions offered on the menu - Crab cake, scallops, filet mignon, lobster ravioli - all exquisitely prepared. The wine list, beer choices, and dessert wine are adequate. We also enjoyed the chocolate souffler which is not too sweet. The atmosphere is relaxing and romantic, with a good night view of Berkeley. For people living in the East Bay, and do not want to drive up to Yontville to experience the French Laundry, this is a close substitute. We will be back."

"I read reviews of this restaurant that stated that the food is acceptable but the view is beautiful and the setting elegant. We found most of that to be true, with the exception of the food, which was outstanding - selection, taste and presentation. The menu provides large and small plates of each dish so one can order a dish as an appetizer or as an entree. This provides the opportunity to try many different items. The portions of the large plates are still modest. Their breads are really special, as odd as that seems. They offer a variety of types of special and delicious rolls. Our desserts were excellent and beautifully presented. The menu makes wine suggestions. Service is great. The cost, without wine, for three people was $130."

"Dynamite sunday brunch (especially for Valentine's Day)but any Sunday it's worth the expense for the experience. Excellent fresh orange juice and continuously poured Kenwood champagne to accompany a huge array of delectibles. Duck breast noodle salad was a delight in addition to Napa cabbage with chicken, watercress with beets. Fresh crab claws and prawns, dim sum, fresh omelette and waffle station, in additiona to traditional breakfast entrees such as eggs Benedict (perfectly runny) and roasted ham and prime rib with winter vegetables. Fresh fruit and dessert bar with an amazing array of freshly prepared tarts, puffs and pies . . . mmmmmmm. The live piano in the bar area was a delightful addition to the ambiance and spectacular views!"

"ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!!! We LOVE The Claremont and especially The Meritage. Our favorite place for brunch! The only negative aspect to the entire weekend were the bartenders at the Paragon. The staff at the Meritage are PHENOMENAL!!! Thank you!!"

"Five of us went for an early birthday dinner mid-week. Our server was formal when we got there, friendly when he realized we were comfortable with that. The menu was confusing, organized by wine instead of course and each yummy-sounding item available in two sizes. Our server was patient and helped as much as he could. We ended up each having a small sized portion as an appetizer and a bigger sized portion as an entree. Everyone loved their choices but, after cross-tasting, I think the favorites were the Cioppino and the Lobster Ravioli (1 friend classified the ravioli as one of the best things he had ever eaten). The smaller sized dishes were actually quite large though. Most of us would have been satisfied with that as the entree."

"Though we had a reservation, we had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table for brunch. This was upsetting since I was hosting my friend for her birthday. She is disabled so it was especially awkward to have to stand and wait for a table. I had requested a window table, if possible. No window table was available, but the table we did get was very pleasant. The service was excellent. It was attentive without being intrusive. The brunch was presented beautifully and there were many fine items to select from. All of the more traditional brunch items were very good.I especially liked some of the more exotic choices liked dim sum, fennel salad, Cornish game hens, and white fish."

"This was our first time, the food was excellent as was the service. The wine list was terrific. I had made a request on open table to have a window seat with a view that was not accomodated, and they seated us on Valentine's day next to the band, which made it difficult to hear each other, so I would recommend making that request ahead of time.
I would dine here again for sure and recommend to friends and family."

"The service was wonderful and the waiter allowed us to have a nice, slow romantic meal together. We had so much personal attention, and yet, we also felt like we had intimate moments alone, too. The menu is super cool: you basically design your own feast. Each entree can be ordered at half size, allowing you to design your own tasting menu (we had six courses overall!). They also divide the menu into various wines so you can decide what you'd like to taste with your food, if you so choose. Each plate was brought out as a course for us to savor slowly, and on our chocolate souffle a special message was written in chocolate syrup congratulating us on our pregnancy! We hope to come back soon!"

"The food is beautifully presented, though it doesn't taste quite as good as it looks, and our main dishes were lukewarm. The recent complete redo of the restaurant (changing from Jordan's to Meritage) resulted in a bar area that's much improved, but the restaurant looks and feels much the same. What's with the sortof rattan-like overly-casual chairs? It feels like a hotel dining room."

"I went for the Sunday Buffet brunch at the Meritage. For $60 per person, I found the food to be quite mediocre, and the food presentation was very uninteresting. The offerings were standard (omelette and waffle bar, bacon/eggs, shrimp cocktail, ham/prime rib carving station). The cheese selection was sparse and they didn't replenish the tray once for the 2 hours I was there. The small selection of dim sum items were very dry (on heat too long?)- the dumpling I took was inedibly dry. Again, I did not see them refill the dim sum once. The most varied selection was the dessert. They also did not accommodate my special request for a window seat (Birthday celebration) made on Opentable.com."

"This is a fine place for a special dinner. In the iconic Claremont Hotel, this elegant room with a view of the San Francisco Bay is a welcome addition. The menu is varied, interesting and offers a small and large portion. Pricing is reasonable and wine paring can be done in 3 or 6oz. amounts. We found that three of the smaller plates and a shared dessert was just right; satisfying and not too filling. Presentation was very attractive, all the dishes were tasty, well seasoned and very fresh. The wait staff was polite, friendly and attentive without overdoing it."

"It was my first time dining there since the remodel. The bar area is beautiful and a nice introduction to the remodeled restaurant. It's beautiful. We were seated in a lovely booth with views of the entire bay area was simply beautiful at night. Very nice for a special occasion. The menu was a little hard to follow with their special offerings. The service was good, but the server seemed inexperienced with this level of service and struggled with remembering how to introduce or describe dishes on the menu. With time, I'm sure that will improve. Over all, we were very satisfied and glad we had a chance to discover this nice addition to fine dining in the East Bay. We look forward to dining there again."

"Was a little worried when we had no problems changing our reservations - twice. They were very accommodating about this. Food was very good, service ok, but the best thing this restaurant has going for it, is the fantastic view. Not really stands out in terms of really great or not so good."

Review 41 for Meritage at the Claremont
Overall Rating

"The only negative about Meritage was the service. Beginning with the hostess, they were dismissive and not attentive. Upon arrival, there were very few tables occupied yet they seated us at a table that was not comfortable. When we asked to move, we were literally glared at and the hostess acted 'put upon'. It was Sunday Brunch and we had to flag somebody down for champagne and then only once did server return to refill glass. One member of our party was drinking wine so the server stated that he assumed we didn't want champagne because there was wine at the table. I would highly recommend this place for Sunday Brunch with the caveat that the service is deplorable."

"My wife and I with another couple spent an hour in the Meritage bar and then had dinner. Everything in the experience was superb. The environment is one of sheer quiet luxury in a venerable building that has been beautifully renovated. The service was extremely attentive, very informed, and knew when to be unobtrusive and when to have lighthearted conversation with us. The food was superb, beautifully presented, and excellent portions unlike many restaurants. Every dish (except deserts) are available in small or large size portions so you can mix and match the whole meal anyway you want. The wine selections were excellent and they let us sample to choose. The value is fantastic."

"Overall, we were not disappointed with our Sunday brunch at all. The food was diverse (and outstanding) and the wait staff were very attentive in a good way. And the view... Anyway we would definitely return to the Meritage for "special" occasions since this is not one of your less expensive, so-so restaurants."

"Had great hopes for Meritage based on what I knew about it (Chef Josh Thomsen from French Laundry), and it delivered, for the most part. The food-wine pairing approach is very unique, a treat for wine lovers and foodies. Given the breathtaking views, and the feel of being on vacation even if you're a local (how often do we get to be tourists in our own world class tourist location?), it's a gem and deserves attention as a new top spot on the east bay dining scene. I don't understand any of the highly negative reviews here, although they could have caught Meritage on an off day / night. Everything from the rolls to the cappuccino (and we're tough on cappuccino) was great. Not French Laundry sublimely amazing, but pretty noteworthy."

"OK, so we had the Christmas day buffet at Meritage. Now, one doesn't expect top flight food on a buffet -- I suppose we were going for the breadth of choices (and not doing the cooking or the dishes). In this regard it was what we expected -- a lot of different types of food, all of fairly decent quality. We went to Meritage for a regular dinner when family was staying at the Claremont, and our experience was much much better. In fact, the food and the service were excellent with a lot of locally grown, organic foods and ingredients included on an impressive menu. So, while I don't think we'll be back for the buffet, we will go back to have a regular dinner there."

"My family and I attended brunch here on Sunday Dec. 27. The quality and variety of the food was excellent. Service was outstanding. We never had to ask for refills on champagne or coffee. Everyone in our party agreed that we had a wonderful experience. The only downside was that our party was large, so we were in a room with other large parties. It was fairly loud, however, the room afforded a beautiful view of the bay! It was a blessing in disguise anyhow, because our family tends to pretty loud ourselves!! We would definitely return. This is a great place for special occasions, as the brunch is a little pricey. However, crab claws, shrimp, gourmet dishes, waffle station as well as other delicious hot dishes abound!"

"I grew up in the Claremont hotel area and have attended events there all my life. Six years ago I started bring my family to the Claremont for christmas dinner and it was like going home. The ambience and food was wonderful. The Meritage this Christmas dinner was outstanding. I loved the updated interior and the food was outstanding. I must admit that I was nervous with the anticipation of the change, but this was wonderful and I can't wait to go back! Thank you

"Christmas Dinner at The Claremont is a tradition for us. We don't tire of it and they have certainly lived up to our expectations each year! It is a buffet and I don't normally enjoy serving buffet style. However, one doesn't feel crowded or rushed while serving your plate; you can actually peruse the table and then select what you want to put on your plate. I guess part of the secret is there is plenty of space around the food tables.
The waiter kept the Mimosas coming until we elected to slow down!
Even the Gift Shop is open on Christmas Day!
Still, such a classy place and one feels special at The Claremont!"

"A friend and I went for brunch recently and had a wonderful time: for a formal yet relaxed atmosphere, stunning view, delicious brunch, and specialty drinks, Maritage is the place to go! We enjoyed ourselves 100%, from the organic apple Cosmo, to the Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine (she's vegetarian), to the the delicious coffee. While we didn't choose to have dessert, the choices looked marvelous. We lingered a long time talking and felt welcomed and attended to. Everyone around us seemed to be enjoying themselves as well!"

"We have eaten at this restaurant before when it was Jordon's and enjoyed it much more and found it to be very festive. The first disappointment was we had requested a window seat (always had our Christmas Eve dinner sitting in a window seat in prior years) and the hostess said that would not be possible as they are reserved for 4 or 5 people parties (ours was 3). We were at the restaurant for 2 1/2 hours and there were two empty window tables open/empty the entire time. The food was OK - nothing special and the drink list was boring -nothing special for the occasion of Christmas Eve. Overall, after going to this restaurant for several years on Christmas Eve, we will not go there next year! Please listen to the requests of your customer"

"If you are into food or wine you may want to stay away from this pricey destination. The food was mediocre at best and the low end wine pairings were uninspiring. Add to that poor service and a price tag of about $75 a person this place is a foodies nightmare. The meal began a bit strangely as we were greeted by our waiter who soon disappeared. We drank champagne for about 45 minutes with no other service. The manager appeared soon after and took our order. He recommended 3-4 small plates or two large plates ea. He raved about the cioppino that turned out to be the worst dish at $29--no crab, mussels 1/2 the size of my little finger in a watery tasteless broth. Any other restaurant in the area would be a better choice."

"Meritage's brunch has changed since when we were last there at Jordan's. The venue is changed with the addition of a large cash bar where there were formerly food selections and the maitre'd is now located inside, across from the pianist, who is the same wonderful gentleman. The Japanese food table is gone. There is a more limited selection of breakfast dishes and only one cook cooking only one omelet at a time. The desserts, Chinese food, and perhaps salads are unchanged and dependable. The champagne is significantly improved. One could even recommend it. Service was attentive and helpful. View remains very special and dining area along the windows has been extended into rooms adjacent to the main dining room."

"The food was delicious, and the presentation was elegant and a delight for the eye. Our service experience, however, diminished the overall experience. When we made our reservation on OpenTable, we requested the brunch. Sadly, when we arrived for our reservation, we were told that brunch began at 11 a.m.; our reservation was for 9:15 a.m. We were hurried through our breakfast. The bill was presented at 9:55 a.m., and we were told we had to pay at that time because they were beginning brunch service. We paid and the wait staff hovered over us, removing silverware, glasses [still being used] and generally sending us the message that we were supposed to leave. While I was looking forward to this dining experience, I won't return soon."

"The ambiance and the view was excellent
Not being into fine dining we found the menu to be very confusing. After it was explained to us for the third time we finally got it. The menu is set up for pairing with wine. Pick a wine then pick the best food to go with it.
The service was OK. We got the impression from our waiter that he didn't take us seriously. Once he realized we were dining inept, he probably figured we were small tippers so our service was a little lack luster. He also kept trying to look down my dates dress, which we found funny. My dates fault, if your going to flaunt them, people are going to look. He forgot our coffee and at times it was difficult to find him. By the looks of the other waiters our experience see"

"Didn't know what to expect with the remodeled Claremont Hotel restaurant, formerly the stuffy Jordans. From the new, woody bar entry to the lovely booths with views, we were very pleasently surprised. Loved the pairings of small or large plate choices with mini wine lists for each -- those both small and large portions as well. Service was outstanding, timely, sometimes 3 wait staff arriving to assure simultaneous service and hot food. And the food was uniformly outstanding. And not wildly expensive. Go and enjoy!"

"My ladies group celebrates Christmas together every December by having a holiday breakfast at The Claremont, formerly Jordan's now Meritage. The breakfast menu was very similar and we were able to order our favorites. The service was very good. We were seated at a window seat at a round table that suited us very well for our group of six ladies. The day was clear blue and sunny so the view was spectacular. We were all pleased by the remodeling that had been done. We will look forward to having dinner at Meritage. The dinner menu looks very interesting.

"The Thanksgiving Buffet was very good, considering how difficult it is to prepare food for a continuous large group. My one comment would be that a "dress code" on some level should be required. For a holiday event, my husband and I were dressed busines casual, more than our "house clothes". Many of the customers were in jeans, short sleeve shorts, and what looked like they just walked out of the house. This really spoils the ambience of the restuarant, especially on a holiday special event. Many restuarants require a jacket or provide one at the door. For such a classy place as The Claremont with its reputation for elegance, sharing a dinner with "sloppy" people really degrades the event."

After waiting 1/2 an hour, I was offered a table that was against a pillar it might has well have been in a closet. While the wait staff and food was fine, my initial treatment was less than stellar. I will not be returning."
Special Features: good for groups, great for brunch, special occasion

Review 77 for Meritage at the Claremont
Overall Rating
(Good)
"Had hoped to dine at the new Meritage restaurant for Thanksgiving, but was seated in an overflow room. The seafood was great, however the actual Thanksgiving options (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc.) were disappointing. Person working the first shift at the pasta bar refused to make personalized pasta dishes. Instead he insisted you sample the ready-made pastas at the end of the table. Piano player was great. Desserts and champagne great. Wait staff was excellent."
