Nieto's
A Re-Concepted Restaurant in the Fabled Carlos’ Space by Carlos and Debbie Nieto. Nieto's is decoratively updated although the gracious wood paneled walls remain. The dining room still has an imtimate feel to it, with a more "club" like atmosphere. The menu is extensive but familiar with modern day tweeks. Comfortable for family gatherings and dates alike.

"Food, apart from an uninspired beet salad, was well prepared and tasty. The risotto was overly cheesy. The downstairs is very noisy, the upstairs much quieter but with no windows is bit claustrophobic. The wait staff is very attentive and pleasant."

"Nieto's is a great spot to dine out with friends. Noise level is a bit loud on the weekends but great ambience. The food is fantastic as is the service. They have a few tables to dine outside in warmer weather and offer valet parking."

"this was our second time at Nietos. We love the wait staff, friendly and fun. and the food is always very good - the menu fits the bill when you are not sure just what it is you are craving, as they have a good variety of styles and sizes. the seating is close together, but we have never had a problem If you are sensitive to neighboring conversation, ask for a booth - there are quite a few"

"We have been there several times and enjoyed everything. Servers are very accommodating, efficient and friendly.

"If you don't mind a high noise level and crowded tables the food is good, though nothing special. For the price there are other nearby restaurants, e.g. Abigail's or Prairie Grass, where the food is better and the noise level is better and the tables are less crowded. Sort of a very noisy Happ Inn. We will probably not go back."

"My cousin and I went here on a friend's recommendation. Nieto's is in the same space as the restaurant Carlos, and has the same owners. Nieto's menu has more reasonably priced food, but the same care and quality as Carlos. You can also get a 3 course tasting meal which definitely reflected more of what Carlos was famous for. I ordered the Lobster Cobb Salad and it was absolutely the best cobb salad I've ever eaten. One thing I would suggest is ask for it to be chopped when ordering to make it easier to eat. My cousin had the turkey burger with house cut fries and it was really tasty and came out piping hot. The service was spot on, and the noise level wasn't too bad. I will definitely return many times to Nieto's!"

"Went for Mother's Day. Strange 3 course menu with really heavy food for holiday lunch. Food was decent, but nothing special. Bread basket was the best part of the meal.
Ordered one of the entrees ala carte, only to be told upon receiving the check that ala carte price was $3 less than 3 course price. They can charge what they want, but shady to hide the fact till the check comes. When we expressed our surprise, server said, "you didn't ask." Kind of a sour note on Mothers Day.
We like Happ and Cafe Central. Wouldn't go back to Nieto's."

"Our family came to the restaurant for many years back when it was still Carlos. We also brought all of our guests there because it was one of the best restaurants in the Chicago area. After last Sunday's experience, we still thing the place is nice, but the food is not as delicious as it used to be. The portions are too large in my opinion and the style of the food preparation has changed. Before it used to be art and now it is more average. The people are nice, atmosphere is good, and the homey feeling will bring in clients."

"Nieto's is the lower cost, more casual replacement for famous Carlos Restaurant, located in Highwood. A good experience which should get better over time. Service staff was helpful, but appeared rushed at all times. Seafood was excellent, but beef tenderloin was undercooked, then overcooked. MIssed opprtunity. Nice presentation. Room was excessively noisely and felt crowded with tables too close to each other. I would go back one more time and hope for a better experience. Has potential, but not well executed. Work in progress?"

"Extremely poor service and uneven food quality. Our server took 15 minutes to acknowledge us after being seated. The entrees were a mixed bag. The grilled Salmon was good as was the burger, but the chicken was served room-temperature and was DRY. The wait for desert was another exercise in patience. It was served without spoons (problematic when its a sundae). We were told they were cleaning the spoons and they would be out shortly. Really? No clean spoons? The dinner was so long, we joked that we would be celebrating Mother's Day 2014 there by the time we got the check. No complimentary glass of wine or coffee or desert to "make up" for the long waits. Poorly execcuted and poorly handled."

"We have enjoyed many meals at Nieto's. The food is always excellent, and no detail is overlooked, from the presentation to the unusual serving pieces to the helpful staff. My guests, who are older and can be very critical, were very happy with everything - until the noise level kicked up at about 7pm on a Saturday night, making conversation diffficult. That's the only possible complaint about the restaurant. We'll be back but will try to find a quieter time to go."

"Love this place. Great casual and lively atmosphere. The owner, Debbie, is warm and welcoming. Everything on the menu is delicious, prepared to perfection with only the highest quality ingredients. Great variety of salads - my fave at the moment is the lobster cobb. My husband's braised short ribs are one of the best on the north shore. Prices are reasonable. If I could, I would eat here every night of the week."

"I don't really know how to describe Neitos. It is an old-school restaurant trying to be new. We sat upstairs, which is a strange room, decor-wise. Our waiter was very attentive, and the hostess (I believe one of the owners) was very friendly and made us feel welcome. The food was kind of old-school, but actually very good. You don't see "mixed vegetables" on a menu much anymore. I had a pork chop, asiago mashed potatoes and said mixed vegetables, and my husband had the turkey burger and fries. Everything was good, not amazingly delicious, but good. We probably won't go back to Nieto's because it's just not our kind of restaurant. They don't need us, though. People were lined up to come in when we left!"

"My husband and I enjoy our visits... the food is great and the familiarity that the owners invoke make it very enjoyable. We always enjoy our conversations with Debbie and enjoy the atmosphere she works so hard to create. With so many choices in the area, my husband and I select restaurants that show appreciation of their customers and this is one of our favorites for that very reason."

"Carlos and Debbie Nieto's Carlos was one of the top restaurants in Chicago, if not the entire United States. However it was very expensive and viewed as a "special occasion" place.
Carlos and Debbie realized this so they re-opened their restaurant as a more casual place where hopefully people will come more than once every couple decades. And I think they have succeeded. While the food is still not cheap (with wine, drinks and tip $80.00 per person) it is less expensive. More importantly, it is a different atmosphere. We were comfortable in jeans.
The food choices are varied, as there are still touches of Carlos, but now the menu includes burgers and such. I had ribs. They were excellent (fall of the bone).

"Always good food, and not crowded and noisy at the beginning of the week. Nieto's has a nice variety of choices so you can graab a bite, or dine as you choose. New 4 course menu for $48.00 is interesting, but too much food most nights."

"The waitstaff was among the best I have experienced. Very few things can beat the pride of the waiter assembling guacamole to order table side, or the waiter's singing Mariachi with your child (19) as you await your meal. Loved it and will absolutely be back."
