Cafe Bastille
Cafe Bastille has terrace seating with heating lamps and a canopy. The seating is bistro style and offer more than 50 seats outdoors and more than 80 seats indoors. The ambiance is incredibly relax and fun. Cafe Bastille is 18 year old and was the first restaurant in the Alley. There is a private dining area downstairs where we can accommodate your special event (birthday party, business dinner, rehearsal dinner, etc...We also have a Lunch Prix Fixe Menu for $16.5 or $19.00(soup/salad and entree) and a 3-course Dinner Prix Fixe for $32 (Soup/Salad and Entree and Dessert)

"We went there for Mother's Day for the first time. Their food is good and they have real French traditional food like Quenelle or Boudin Noir which is not common to find in other French places.
Service wise though, it was so so... especially when they started cleaning and tidying up all the tables around us. We were sitting outside on the street and enjoying our food and the weather but then you feel like you need to eat in the rush because they need to leave...It is better not to be the last ones to eat here if you want a better experience.
Also the restaurant was closing while the others on the same street were starting to put the tables outside to open...it is a bit strange."

"I used to love this restaurant. No longer... I was so disapointed this last visit on Mother's Day. We had the worst service, a waitress in a bad mood, limit rude, other staff throwing things on our table, missing knifes, forks, etc."

"We were at Cafe Bastille on Mother's Day is was OK. The restaurant didn't seem to provide anything really special for Mother's Day and the staff didn't acknowledge the special day. In fact they were pretty pushy. The food was good but unremarkable and I wish that I had made a reservation elsewhere. However, it wasn't a disaster so I appreciate that. I don't think this place is great for special occasions but for a quick and simple bite at a place in the financial district."

"This rating was requested from me after my second trip to Cafe Bastille, which was not as pleasant at my first trip.
I tried to check-in by the person I was speaking with kept talking to other employees. Our server was fair with customer service, at best. The food was still good, no change there, and the wine as well.
Overall, for French food, this is not a top spot for me but it is good. The fair service (unlike my first visit) makes me think about returning for a while."

"This restaurant has outdoor seating; what it doesn't have is level seating area. My chair was placed over a hole in the concrete and at a tilt. The chairs are metal folding style and not comfortable. The food, on the other hand, was very good. The escargot was delicious, the salmon was tender and succulent, and the mussels were spectacular. Just be willing to sit in funky conditions if you are planning on dining in the patio area."

"My family has been dining occasionally at Cafe Bastille for 25 years. The owner, Olivier, always welcomes us cheerfully. The food is delicious- my daughter and I had mussels and trout. My husband had hachis, as usual. Sitting outside in Belden Alley is like being in Europe. It is a unique experience in San Francisco."

"This is my 3rd time there. I went twice with my boyfriend but this time my friend and I celebrated her birthday. I notified them of this and they gave us a drink, Kir, on the house. We had a wonderful time. She ordered moules/frites and a small mesclun salad. I got the lardon salade. Unbelieveable. They deep fried the poached egg which was delightfully yummy and perfectly cooked."

"Traditional dishes that are sometimes hard to find in the U.S. I've never seen île flottante in a French restaurant in the U.S., only in my mother-in-law's home! Appertizers - I had French Onion soup, enough cheese and not too salty. My husband had Escargot which are very tender but little too rich for my taste.
Main courses are recommended by our waiter. I had Trout with Spinach and my husbad had Filet Mignon. Big portion for both plates unlike other French restaurants in SF. Filet Mignon is cooked just right at medium rare, tender, juicy with great sauce. We are very pleased with choices.
We elected to sit at basement, away from all other customers, which is very quite. But the waiter did not forget about us, he came to check on us many times. He is very pleasant and polite, we like this young man very much.

"The food was great. The appetizers were the highlight. I had escargo and my wife had Kobe beef. It was wonderful! The only real negative is the tables outside are very close together so if your neighbors are annoying, it may reduce the overall experience."

"The tables in the basement level offered an opportunity to have a conversation with our dining partners. The food was quite good and the wine a strong match. Service staff were knowledgeable, but the service was a bit slow. Not the place to go if you are on a tight schedule, but otherwise the outdoor seating and food would be a great attraction to this restaurant. We'll return."

"I thought the food and the service was excellent. I had the salmon with an olive tapenade and ratatouli. It was a very favorful and interesting combinaton. They make a terrific dry vodka martini and when my fell over half full, they made me a new full one -- which I thought was super nice. The creame bulle was the best I have ever had and loved the macaroons also. I would definitely go back to try their Beef Bourginon."

"We noticed that there weren't a lot of people in the restaurant, but we've had to ask the waiter if our food can be served already...we waited more than 30 minutes and during that time, the place was half empty...I had the seafood pasta, it was alright-I ate half of it. My friend had the pork chop, she liked it and finished it."

"This place has great food at very good prices; that is its strength. The desserts are unusually creative and good; not just the usual flourless chocolate cake. We were at the outside tables. Not bad but a touch chilly. I think inside is the place to be, that is on the upper level which has a fun casual French ambiance. The lower level, to my mind, is ugly. Service is friendly although they didn't ask how the food was or if we needed anything more. Those who want a touch of elegance should probably go elsewhere. But I'll be back repeatedly for the food."
