Montclair Bistro
Montclair Bistro is tucked into the wooded hillside in the charming area of the Oakland Hills. Built in 1948, the style of the building is French provincial with attention paid to detail-from the weather vane atop the peaked roof, the half-timbering, to the weathered bricks along the walls and pathways. Inside, artwork on speckled walls in tones of soft leaf green and butterscotch, unobtrusive dark carpeting, comfortable chairs upholstered in a soft, dark fabric, and white linen-and-butcher-paper-covered tables create an intimate, homelike setting. Montclair Bistro brings upscale California cuisine and a casually elegant decor and service to the table. The wine list features over 150 varieties, displayed in a climate controlled wine room.

"By far the best restaurant in the Oakland Hills. Some excellent dishes - charred spinach salad, brussell sprouts, and an excellent wine list. The potato gnochi is perfectly done. And the starter consomme is perfect. My friend had striped bass which he said was wonderful. Great place for a special meal."

"A group of 6 of us and 1 baby had a nice Sunday brunch here recently. I really enjoyed my two eggs with toast and potatoes. Others on my group had the French toast (good), the salmon Benedict (good) and their two course brunch option with the shrimp cocktail (also good).
They were very attentive with refilling drinks and bringing requested items including delicious jam.
I am glad we tried it out and plan to go again when we have more company in town!"

"We've been to Montclair Bistro twice, for brunch and for dinner. We were pleased with both experiences. Overall the food we've had has been excellent.
The service when we were there for brunch was not good. They were under-staffed and everything took a very long time. However, they were nice about it, bringing free "appetizers" of fruit bowls and such while we waited, which was especially thoughtful since we were there with a 3-year old. For dinner, however, the service was perfect.
The ambiance is nice, but could use some updating. And many of the patrons were old (though we were also there for an early, 6:30pm dinner).
Overall, we'd recommend."

"To be honest, the food was overpriced and greasy. The ingredients weren't bad, but the potatoes were so covered in butter/oil and fried to a crisp it was hard to taste the potato at all. The omelet was fine, but again, the layer of grease on the outside took away from the spinach and under-ripe tomatoes on the inside. The presentation was great, I'll give them that! It's a fine spot if you're in to traditional American brunch fare, but just don't expect anything special or really any organically sourced ingredients."

"The food was not great and overpriced. I had the French onion soup and it was very sour, and not tasty at all. I also had the "Kathleen" salad which was good but not what I expected for a $19 salad. I think this place is trying to be something it's not. Also, the service was less than the stellar. While the hostess/bartender was sweet, the waiter was lingering and awkward. I will not be back."

"The food at Montclair Bistro is always excellent. My husband and I have dined there regularly for at least 5 years. The wait staff are attentive and friendly. The restaurant is elegant but relaxed. "It might have been just me not noticing the special menu for Easter Brunch on their website, but it turned out to be $40 for each adult and we had no other options (couldn't order from the menu). I'm afraid I was not counting on that!!! So, my $20 Groupon barely made a dent in the entire bill which turned out to be over $100 for 3 of us ... Not doing that again!
But aside from that shock, the food was quite wonderful and it is a special little gem for a special day. Hope to see it again on a more casual day for a regular pancakes, etc."

"We had the Greek mixed green salad which was ordinary with the dressing a bit too tart. The Sunday prime rib special was tender though not very tasty. The soufflé was, as always, excellent. Bread was nice and warm but we wish the cook or server would slice it through as it was very fluffy and any attempt to break off a piece would squash the bread to nothing. Server could use more customer focus training. He brought the complimentary soup and salad and my wife's cup was totally spilled. They gave her extra napkins but did not give her a new cup of soup!"

"Our second time at Monclair Bistro. We mentioned on our reservation that we had theater tickets. First thing our server, Nina, asked was when do we have to leave? We appreciated her concern for our time schedule. Food was delicious. We each shared. The salmon kabobs were amazing with just a hint of cinnamon. Unusual combo but It worked. "Spicy ahi appetizer, very good. Grilled artichokes, interesting but too many lima beans and too few artichokes. Striped bass entree, dull. It okay. Blackened salmon deep fried, amazing. The wine list is spectacular and so are its prices. We located their last bottle of 1990 chianti reserva, $60, the only reserve we could spring for. Crossed our fingers. It had held up beautifully. "restaurant had a private party at the bar. Patrons were way too noisy and should have been seated in a private room as their voices were so loud it was impossible to carry on a normal conversation in the main dining room. This is the second time this has happened. Waiters and waitresses were so short staff we had to wait 5 minutes before the hostess even noticed we had arrived even though we had a reservation. Service was very slow."

"The Montclair Bistro provides an excellent dining experience without the pretense. Excellent Food at affordable prices make this a perfect venue for a special evening. There are special menus on Monday and Tuesday that add more to an already attractive menu. The Bistro is a very special place that could become your regular haunt."

"I was a bit disappointed. Service was mediocre at best. My wife got an entree salad that she barely touched. Seafood Wellington was OK, but if you want veggies it's extra. 2 entrees, 3 glasses of wine, one dessert and one appetizer was $110."

"Wow, such good food at very reasonable prices, but interminable service. Two and one half hours for an app, entree, and dessert for two. We started to leave several times, but for some reason they crammed everyone into a corner and at least we could eavesdrop on every other table to pass the wait times. Won't go back."

"I was drinking my chicken consomme from the cup in which it was presented, and the server (probably trying to get a laugh out of my beautiful girlfriend) said to me, "that's an ... interesting way of doing it." Other than that it was an okay experience, though I probably wouldn't have gone if not for the GroupOn."

"We came to this restaurant because I liked their menu online. The problem for us was they had a fixed valentines menu that did not allow any choices from their regular menu. And after my husband and I left I double checked their website to see if I just missed their Valentines menu, but they had one.
We plan to go back and try the things on the menu we were hoping to experience this time.
Hopefully 2ndtime is a charm."

"My friend's soup was too salty to eat, and she had to order something else. She was not charged for the soup, of course, but still . . . Also, The waiter forgot about my glass of wine until I reminded him. Is that so hard to recall? I have been here several times, and each time I hope to enjoy it, because it is convenient and has a pleasant ambiance. But I have finally concluded that the prices are too high for the quality and amount of the food, and I don't plan to return. It's not terribly expensive, but overall the value is not there."

"Great restaurant in a nice area. Enjoyed having brunch and indulging the mimosas they offer that went well with my Tuscan Benedict. Service was great, very welcoming and attentive. Food presentation was wonderful. Only complaint I would have was that the tomato bruschetta had a soggy center bread, even though the bread was toasted! I would recommend this place if you are in the area."
