"Always forget how good the food is at Fred's until we make a return visit. Assume Mr. Lee is planning a renovation, as the space is in dire need of a lift. Staff is always welcoming.....a leisurely delicious dinner."

Review 4 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"The food was actually better this day than others and I am a regular. A bit disappointed. We were there early for lunch around 11:45 and it wasn't busy but the waiter wasn't attentive initially until we said something. Our guest were going to the theater. Once he knew he was accommodating."

Review 5 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"We eat there a couple times of year. We were on time, before the surge of people and we got shoved into a corner when there were plenty of tables available. Being next to the waiters station was not a highlight."

Review 7 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"I arrived on time for my reservation but was not allowed to be seated without my entire party being present. I think that if you make a reservation for a table you should be given your table when you arrive at the designated time and not have to wait outside until the remainder of your party arrives."

Review 8 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"First, I realized that the hostess will make you wait or will always tell you that they have 45 minutes waiting time, even when the restaurant has plenty of tables available. I made a reservation today, and noticed that they keep telling you to wait for a long time, and tables were available during the hour and a half that I was there. Complete lack of management. We had to request the bread while they were talking. I had the soup of the day (cawliflower) and it was ok As a main course I ordered the chicken milanese, just average and my friend ordered the Madison salad also just average. We order Tiramisu which did not have mascarpone at all, only cream cheese with coffee, really horrible. Cookie plate, lame and into a deli side."

"This was always my favorite lunch spot. I always ordered the same chicken sale which used to be delicious. This time it just missed. No Bibb Lettuce, the wrong dressing and no flavor. So sad."

Review 10 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"I had not been to Fred's for lunch in a long time. I usually stop by if I am in Barneys after work and stop by Freds after the dinner hour so did not realize even though we had a reservation it took a while to be seated but the overall experience was ok."

Review 18 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"Fred's has consistently poor service/attitude. The people who greet you are clearly not pleased that you are there. They treat you terribly. The waiters are the same. The food was good but not good enough to overcome the very bad attitude of the hostess and the servers. Management needs to fix this. It really ruins the experience."

Review 20 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"Quite the scene - ladies who lunch mixed with business people - impatient shoppers trying to get a table without a reservation and corporate types. Great looking crowds, efficient service - quite a scene. We've just relicated our offices a block away and will be back frequently!"

Review 21 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"Fred's is a lovely, relaxing, luxurious spot for lunch, and a quiet place for dinner. Most of the patrons at dinner seem to be from the area hotels, but it still has a very New York feel to it. The food is delicious. It's great for people with special dietary requirements -- vegetarians, gluten free, or modern kosher -- as the menu is quite varied. There were service glitches on my most recent visit (appetizer that came after the food, wine had to be asked for twice, burned fries delivered to table), but I've been there plenty and never had this experience before so I'm going to assume it was just an off night. Dining at Fred's is like a mini-vacation. It's too expensive for every day, but if I could eat there every day I would."

Review 22 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"Table was not ready when we arrived on time. Was "directed" by militant hostess to "wait out on the bench". Is this a bus stop or a restaurant? Get rid of the obnoxious hostess! If I wasn't on a date (and she really wanted to have lunch at Barney's" I would have told the hostess to get lost, and gone somewhere else for lunch. Unfortunately she must be a fixture there as my friend said "she's always like that."
Waited 15 mins for table. Really? You can't keep a reservation? Don't take them if you're not going to keep them."

Review 24 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"Was recommended this restaurant by friends in London. Definitely go to get a feel of the "shopping scene set". Good food and wine. Was a little disappointed with the arrival experience. I booked a table for 1300, arrived ten minutes earlier and was told "it will be closer to 1300". I came back to the lady at 1300 and the "lady" got a bit snippy telling me that "they were still seating people who booked at 1245". It would have been better if she told me that upfront and not go into a "finger pointing" dialogue. Seeing I was on holidays and would have waited anyway. She clearly needs some problem resolution training. Otherwise a good experience."

Review 26 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"So glad you asked! I've dined at Fred's many times. It's a scene. If I am midtown, it's a go-to, but I would never choose it for an intimate meal. Made my reservation through Open Table about a week in advance. My out of town friend arrived first, I arrived shortly after and checked in. I was told to wait in the lobby until my name was called. Ten minutes later a name was called and a couple stood up and went into the dining room. My friend said, "that was your name." I assumed that the couple had the same name and approached the hostess saying, "I have a common last name, was that my name that was called?" Turns out the guy's name was nothing like mine. He was seated closer to the hostess and took my table."

Review 29 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"I had read all the reviews of Fred's and was especially worried about the service issues. My daughter and I went there for dinner with a 6:30 reservation. We had a WONDERFUL time. We were seated on time, the service was excellent, and the food was fantastic. I had the ravioli and she had chicken soup. We split the cold seafood appetizer. We had a thoroughly enjoyable experience and will go back for sure next time we are in New York."

Review 30 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"This is a dependable eatery with a very accomodating staff and the food is very good. Beware that they do not have a childrens menu per se - they say they can do childrens items but when we ordered "chicken fingers and fries" the portion was huge and it was $18. So if you bring kids that won't eat anything else, be prepared to split that! Since many times you would be there with children, it would be helpful if they did have a couple of items just for kids. Good place for lunch with a friend while shopping."

"So glad we booked through Open Table. A member of our party was a few minutes late and they would not allow us to sit down and I thought the special table I had booked would be gone but I'm sure because we booked through you they held the spot.
Thank you!"

"We have eaten here a few times and this last experience was not anywhere as good as the other times. They forgot to give us rolls after we asked for them so we had to ask again. The chicken ceasar salad was somewhat limp and not as good as usual. The crabcake was only warm. The service left alot to be desired."

Review 40 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"My friend and I each ordered a salad to start, followed by fish dishes. The salad was larger than average so, of course, it took us longer to eat. The waiter didn't bother to time the order and obviously put both courses in together. Consequently, when the fish arrived at our table, it was almost room temperature. Since the waiter didn't come back to check how everything was, I just let it go (and didn't eat much). All this with an empty restaurant, so the waiter really had no excuse to be invisible."

Review 41 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"My girlfriend and I wanted to have a nice lunch after shopping in midtown. The hostess was absolutely terrible. Asked to be moved away from window (drafty) - totally empty dining room. The second table was not in a good spot, but didn't want to complain. She then seated a party of 3 wannabe hipsters in the booth on top of us (they were super loud and obnoxious). We ended up leaving before ordering. Horrendous experience - the food is great (eat here all the time) but for a $50 lunch, I expect a pleasant experience from beginning to end."

"Overall the restaurant is ok. It's a place just to people watch & be seen. Nothing really special about it. The Hostess when you enter was kind of rude (even though I had a reservation). I dont think they have their customer service together overall for it to be such a fancy restuarant."

Review 47 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"The food was great, but the condescending, rude, inattentive and poorly trained wait staff were so bad that they took away from any positive that might've come from the evening. The manager was contacted and made aware of the numerous issues the party experienced. We will not return to Fred's again nor do we recommend this place to anyone. There are other places that you can find phenomenal food in the City where you will actually be treated with the most basic amount of decency. Fred's would do well to remember that business is business no matter how young or old the client is, and every patron should be treated with the same amount of respect.
I encourage everyone to stay away from Fred's. They have some serious issues to resolve."

Review 48 for Fred's at Barneys New York - Madison Avenue
"Made a 1:45 PM reservation for lunch Tuesday - requested a table against the outside Madison Avenue wall per usual. The hostess refused to give us a table as requested (said it had been requested by someone else) and put us behind the hostess station surrounded by babies and prams and two feet from the servers' station. She made no apologies and even as other tables opened up, she refused to set them up for us. While the food is heavenly, the management of patrons clearly has no regard for neighbors and regulars who dress well, behave well and order generously (wine, etc.). High margin, neighborhood customers deserve respect, but apparently that's not a priority here. Love the food, hate the attitude!"

"Some confusion over our fairly simple order aside, I feel compelled to say that the bagels are not worthy of a New York establishment. Please consider a new source! Those tasted like Lenders."
