Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.
Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. "I came here for my 5 year anniversary and have never been. The Google reviews were mixed, but we tried it anyway. We were there for mother’s day, so the menu was shorter than usual. The wine and the service were excellent. Our ribeye's were incredible and cooked to perfection. This is understandable since one of the staff was originally from the Republic in College Station. The salad was the only thing I was not to fond of. The fact the restaurant is in a church, provided for a great scene to have a romantic dinner. Yes the meal was pricey, but overall I found the food and experience worth it. You could easily spend more at other restaurants."

"We celebrate Easter and Mother's Day each year at Mark's and other times in our desire to have the best in food, service, and ambiance.
There has "never" been a disappointment. And I might add, I asked for a special table for Mother's Day in the balcony center table next to the railing, and that is what we got, and I arranged flowers to be brought there, and Mark's staff had them "waiting" for my wife as we approached the table."

"I ordered Ham and melon at Mother's Day brunch. I had visited Italy the previous year and expected something similar to the prosciutto and melon frequently offered in restaurants in Italy . I was disappointed. The ham you served was very salty and there were a few melon balls at most. It was all a little fussy. Simple wedges of cantaloupe and honeydew with some quality prosciutto would have been much better. The ratio was way off.
The desert was the best.
Overall, I would say that sometimes simple is better."

"Party of two. Our apps were great, the entrees just as impressive. And, of course, the service was just about perfect. My one and only complaint--and it's a small one--is that the time between ordering and the arrival of the plates was a bit too short. In a restaurant like this, we were expecting to take our time."

"Looking for a nice romantic restaurant with top american food as described on internet site.
Arrived in a jam packed place, so noisy we could hardly hear each other, service not so friendly, one nice waiter but another one poured water on our hands onstead of ginto the glass and hardly apologized. Reception not very welcoming.

"I have been to Marks on multiple occasions and the food, service, and ambiance have never disappointed! "At the bar, took a long time to get a Campari : they didn't find the bottle and finally there was very little aperitif and mainly ice in the glasses.
The rack of lamb ( special of the day at a very high price ) had very little meat, was very small and was not that "special"....."

"Marks is usually a great place but the service was a little off the night we ate dinner. Servers never asked us if we wanted another cocktail. Waiters were more interested in taking care of larger tables in their section rather than our two-top in the corner. The bus boy was more attentive with water than the servers were with asking if we needed anything else. It will be a while before we go back. Such a shame...use to be a great place."

"Marks is a beautifully repurposed church with stunning additions! The service is impeccable, Kent had great recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful evening. Cat had all our wine needs well in hand! The food was great and servings ample! Don't leave without trying their fried oyster app with soft shell crawfish on top! We were going to split a dessert but had to try a new one the chef was developing, glad we did!"

"The chef always comes up with wonderful creations. In my top five restaurants in Houston. American food with a french accent. service ver friendly. forget your diet for a meal, well worth it. Unsual former church decor (art deco)We usually have a pretty quite table, but the last time was next to a group that was oblivious to the amount of noise they were making...oh well food was worth it.

"We could not have selected a better or more beautiful venue to celebrate our daughter and son-in-law's first wedding anniversary. A restaurant in a church?? I couldn't quite "see it"...but it was lovely, elegant and creatively unique beyond description! Low lighting, conversation-friendly, lovely table settings and decor....all very sophisticated, yet comfortable and inviting. We appreciated the attention to our special occasion request for a great table...and also the chef's happy script wishes on the honored couple's decadent dessert presentation. Waiter was perfect and Chef Mark himself was so kind to visit our table with late evening area piano bar suggestions. Our first time at this absolutely 5-star restaurant - first of many!"

"This is moderately expensive restaurant & it is not worth the money.
My wife & I went on Friday night & had a lovely evening, but the food was not great. We started with the Salmon & Crawfish appetizer. The flavors were great, but the size of this appetizer was tiny, more for my kid than for my wife. There were exactly 3 Crawfish on the plate & enough Salmon to fit on a wasabi plate. One thing is to delicately & artfully serve a plate & another to serve a little portion, this was little.
My main course was the veal tenderloin & shortribs. The short ribs were tasteful but the tenderloin was bland. The sides were good. My wife had the Trio of Seafood & she also thought it was just alright. I must say that the clams were good. It was loud"

My main course was the veal tenderloin & shortribs. The short ribs were tasteful but the tenderloin was bland. The sides were good. My wife had the Trio of Seafood & she also thought it was just alright. I must say that the clams were good. It was loud"

"My new favorite restaurant! I took my wife to Mark's in April 2013 for our third anniversary and spent nearly $500. It was well worth every penny. Their composed dishes look like artwork with many components that come together beautifully. The sommolier was very approachable and helpful, not snooty, and the dessert wine pairings are out of this world. Mario, our server, said he's one of the "new guys" since he's only been there eight years. Amazing that the chefs still hold such a passion to excel and transport the diner to another plane of existence. If Michelin diners rated Houston restaurants, Mark's would definitely be starred."

Oysters appetizers ($51 for 2) were very good but very pricey
Nice texture on fried ones.
Seafood trio was pretty good, Veal entree was overcooked (ordered med. rare, it looked like med. well), very small portion. The bread was the best part of the meal. The church was best part of the night. Asked to take leftover bread home but didn't receive it.
Waiter didn't bother to come back at all after we recv'd our entrees to see if we needed anything else. He did offer to take our picture during dessert (we were disappointed that there was no complimentary dessert for our special occasion)

"The food was delicious, nicely presented and quickly served - well worth the price. The wine list, while extensive, was grossly over-priced. If you like a nice meal, but don't drink much, I highly recommend. If you want a few drinks or a bottle of wine, be prepared to spend no less than $100/person. We really enjoyed it and will return."

"The initial table offered to us was in a terrible location(upstairs in the back corner right next to the wine rack). The resturant is also too dark. The Food was good and the service was good and quick but we also felt rushed. I was expecting the experience to be special as I had remembered it some years before that's why I picked it for our 16th Wedding Anniversary dinner but, it did not totally live up to my expectations this time around."

"Very nice experience. Our waiter was a bit odd. When we asked for recommendations he said he didn't have any or "don't ask him". That said, everything else was very nice. It was our wedding anniversary and they added a candle and message to our dessert. I think our bill was around $200 with an appetizer, two entrees, a cocktail, 2 glasses of wine, and a dessert. The converted church is really amazing for ambiance."
