La Chaumiere is as close as it gets to dining in a French country inn. Now entering its 30th year, La Chaumiere features traditional dishes like escargots en coquille, boudin blanc, quenelles of pike, cassoulet and Grand Marnier souffle. "Three of us arrived for a 6:30 reservation, had an excellent meal, but left feeling like we were most unwelcome. The wait staff hovered, pushing us to order. Wine was poured like it was coming out of a faucet. They kept trying to remove our plates before we were finished. When we did not pack up and go after dessert, the waiter threw his hands up in despair and declared to his colleague - yes they are staying for breakfast. $230 later, one leaves feeling resentful having planned a nice evening with friends but feeling like the restaurant could not wait to get rid of you. Why do people put up with such service? There are plenty of welcoming restaurants in this town. This one is not one of them."

"La Chaumiere is an old favorite that we recently rediscovered when taking out-of-town guests to a special place with great food. Following our rediscovery, my husband and I have enjoyed dining at La Chaumiere more than a half dozen times -- sometimes on our own, sometimes with others. The superb staff and excellent food always makes La Chaumiere a Special Evening!"

"We were very pleased with everything about this restaurant. From the waiter steering us away from a particular dish (rare you get such honesty) to the delicious short rib entree. The orange hinted glaze was amazing. Excellent food and excellent service."

"Had a reservation, seated late. The maitre d' was cold and impersonal, casting our menus to the table as we sat down. The meal started nicely, appetizers arrived timely and our bottle of wine the same. Then, 1 hour passed before our entrees hit the table. 15 minutes prior, an acknowledgement of the delay, though no apology or sense of urgency to expedite the process. The food comes, it is mediocre. The mashed potatoes on my plate I assumed came from a box. The proteins were just ok, particularly considering the wait. Dessert was lackluster. We weren't thanked for our patronage, and we certainly weren't conveyed the slightest degree of regret for the gap in service that affected reservations for later in the night. We will not be returning."

"An amazing find - the food was unbelievable and the prices were incredibly reasonable given the fare. Highly recommend starting the evening with a Cheese Plate, and finishing with the Chocolate Souffle - be sure to order that when you order your meal. the service was wonderful, the atmosphere was energetic but homey. "This restaurant was referred to by a friend, and I will most definitely be referring this one to others. Every dish that was ordered by my group was amazing, from the the baked mussels to the Grand Marnier souffle. The space is charming and romantic, and very european-esque. "Being french expatriated in the USA since 2011, this is one of our best french restaurant experience in the states. We decided to try french food in La Chaumière, especially because of the impressive menu, featuring some of the hardest french dishes to realize. While the service lived to be desired ( in a hurry, rough, not attentive), the food was amazingly good. We tried "Quenelles de Brochet" (fish soufflé in a lobster sauce) and found the same delicacy as the Lyon dish. We also tried "Saumon en croûte" (salmon in a puffy home made crust), perfect ! As desserts, we had a big "soufflé au Grand Marnier" and a "Sabayon aux fruits rouges" (Berries gratin in custard) . While we already were full, we enjoyed it to the last bite."

"We were pleasantly surprised to stumble across La Chaumiere in two ways. I found it just in passing and stopped in another local spot for lunch. The manager and a patron BOTH recommended the restaurant. The selections were very good. We had the Lobster Bisque and Escargot, both very nicely done. My husband's Duck was outstanding as was my special Sweetbreads entree. The Grand Marnier souflee was also good. Very reasonably priced and our server and hostess were exception. We'll be back."

"Where to start? How about that the place packs you in like sardines and then there's a rushed sense to the whole thing. I ordered the venison medallions and my wife the rack of lamb, medium-rare. It was clear that the lamb chops were medium-well, yet, the waiter said "it is because of the light" and then "did you taste them?" before taking them back to the kitchen. It took forever for the new chops to arrive, and I had finished my entree, which was nothing special and 1 out of 3 small medallions was over-cooked. The lamb that did come back was cooked properly, but was chewy. No apologies were given and no deductions taken from the bill. Our dessert, the chocolate souffle, had clearly sat due to the problem with the lamb. Never again!"

"We went for dinner on a Friday night -- the service was impeccable, as was the food. The server split an entre of mussels for an appetizer for two of us, and they were phenomenal (and huge portions). Two of our party had the onion soup, which they very much enjoyed. The rack of lamb was outstanding, and beautifully presented. We didn't save room for dessert, but the options sounded great -- will be back to try them out!"

"We love La Chaumiere, but sometimes there are very long stretches between the order and the food. Who would have thought it would be full on a Wednesday at 7 p.m.? We ordered drinks, then the waiter arrived to tell us that they were expecting a large party, so we'd better order quickly. He reminded us twice. When we ordered, the first course came after about 25 minutes, but we waited seemingly endlessly for the main course. My husband can't sit for long periods, so he had to get up and walk around in the interim. The food is always worth waiting for, but this is the second time this has happened recently. Do they need more kitchen staff? the strong suit of the restaurant has always been personal attention. Is this declining?"

"Our waiter semed to not enjoy his job at all. we had the impression he did not want us to be there and everything we asked for was somehow an imposition. My apitizer, goose liver pate was excellent howver it cam with 2 soggy pieces of toast - had to use the table bread to eat it. the Fish stew(their version of boullabaise) had over cooked fish - the smallest shrimp I have seen and the broth had a dried out cover - it was obvious that it was made earlier and left to sit for some time. in short - DO NOT GO THERE!"

"La Chaumiere has been around for quite a while. It has a quiet and comfortable charm. You can always be sure to find foods that are French traditional as well as foods which are current and healthy. We began with good red wines, Caesar salad and a very nice, smooth root soup. We also both had the liver which was cooked exactly the way we asked. The mashed potatoes were slightly slaty we both agreed. There was a very nice brown sauce on the liver. Good coffee at the end made it a pleasant and tasty lunch. I would definitely recommend it and go back. Just an aside, it was lovely to hear the host/hostess greet familiar customers by name."

"We dined at La Chaumiere last Thursday and were lucky enough to enjoy their weekly special, Cassoulet. It was delicious. I also had the Grand Marnier souffle with creme anglaise. It was a light souffle, crispy on the top and soft and perfect on the inside. Great taste. Service was very good and I enjoyed the French romantic atmosphere."

"This is one of my favorite restaurants in Washington. It is cozy, and the food is delicious, traditional French food. We went for the Shad Roe, and it did not disappoint. The cheese soufflés at the next table looked pretty tempting, too. You cannot go wrong at La Chaumiere. It is on everyone's list of favorite restaurants! May it remain forever."

"It was like being in France but with English spoken around. Dinner, service and ambience were excellent. From the lobster bisque, Magret du Cannard, to the souffle Grand Marnier, to the Sancerre and Bordeaux , and the cheese plate, it was all delicious. The service was professional, corteous and friendly. We were only visiting for a few days, but I would definitely choose this restaurant the next time I come."

"Food is still among the best in D.C., sometimes remarkable, sometimes just good, with the elan and variety of a restaurant vying for a single Michelin star in France but not quite capable of winning it. The service used to be impeccable but has slipped two notches, sometimes nonchalant, sometimes insufficiently professional. It used to be near Michelin star level but not now. Tables are very close together and allow little room for the waiters to pass. Any guest who dares to arise is shunted to the side or asked to move on. Tables are also small and lead to spills by the waiters. They have no high chair for small children.
The restaurant has suffered from a lack of competition in truly high end cooking and service: it has slipped."
