"Very busy on Sat. night. It took 15-20 minutes to be seated with 7:30 reservation. The food was very good but found the portions to be on the small side at least on the tasting menu. If you are a big eater you may be disappointed. The service was great. I was a little disappointed that there was no mention of my friend's Birthday by the waiter which I included in the reservation notes."

"One of our favorites... we went on a Friday during Lent, but we still wanted to celebrate a birthday. There is an oyster bar on Fridays, great selection of meatless or seafood dishes... yummy and we stayed inside our dietary guidelines to boot. Try the chocolate crunch cake!"

"This restaurant is a true example of fine dining and reminds me of wonderful restaurants in Berkeley, CA. A truly mixed and eclectic crowd, next to us a 6 foot blonde super model and her date, and across a group of 4 what looked to be college professors! Great food, wonderful recommendations. Service was very slow, and sporadic. for drinks, appetizer and dinner it took 2 and a half hours and there were only 3 of us and it was a Wednesday night."

"Joe's has quickly become one of my consistent favorites, and I rave about it to anyone and everyone who will listen. The quality of the food is always top-notch, and the prices are so unbelievably affordable, it makes fine dining accessible to those of us who aren't all that wealthy but LOVE a great meal and will tell all our friends to go to your establishment and give you their business. I've gotten my family and many of my friends hooked on Joe's and for good reason. AMAZING food, excellent service, beautiful and clean ambiance, every time, without fail. Please don't ever change!! Unless it's for the better, which may be hard b/c Joe's is already just one of the best spots around."

"Joe's Restaurant is a nice little find for those looking for a cozy and not too crazy place to enjoy a really nice meal. I found the service very attentive and the waiter was very helpful in suggesting menu items. The food was excellently prepared and obviously showed a lot of love and care in the process. "My wife and I had the tasting menu. The first 3 couses were good. The lamb course was awful. The cut of lamb was fatty and sinewed. It was under cooked. The orzo accompanyment did not taste very good either. The service was indifferent. Our water and coffeee were never refilled and we had to ask for additional bread.

The wine pairings were very good.

Overall, a fair dining experience. Joe's was a far better restaurant 10, even 5 years ago.
I have eaten there at least 25 times. I don't think I will return as there are far better choices in Los Angeles."

"although Joe has a good knack for tasty foods (mushroom ravioli, fois gras pate) and an interesting menu offering, the evening was overshadowed by poor service. there is a claim that the waitstaff pools together their tips, so when i requested a switch from our argumentative waiter, the much friendlier waitress was a welcome breath of fresh air, but still didn't hurdle the damage already done previously. the check also took roughly 25 minutes to arrive after having to request it, as well as the dinner plates being removed... sigh... Joe did visit our table and seemed sincere in his dismay of our experience. Joe's has a great rep and is a great find for SM/Venice area, so i still wish them the best!"

"Ambitious menu that reads well and priced well, almost priced too well. Unfortunately, ingredients quality variable which I suspect is a function of pricing. Result is in many dishes flavors are muddled or bland, e.g. porcini mushroom ravioli is bland and mushrooms slimy, shrimp app with a bunch of ingredients was just pretty much three shrimp that were very plain tasting. Some dishes cold.

Deserts excellent.

Restaurant was full and kitchen could not get dishes out--from the time we were seated to the time we were served our first dish was an hour and a half. Total meal time was four hours--not leisurely more like massive gaps it time from start to finish. Server was great but can't overcome a kitchen that can't get it out."

"They do not manage reservations well. We arrived for an Open Table reservation on a Saturday night for 8:45. They were backed up and we had six four-person tables waiting ahead of us. We finally gave up at 9:30 as there were still five other tables waiting ahead of us, with the first one in line holding a reservation from 8:15!! We were with friends, but if it had been a dinner to impress a visitor or business associate it would have been embarrassing."

"I've had brunch here several years ago and liked it. The ambiance was great, the patio was nice. The food was pricey but delicious. I decided this would be a great place for a special occasion dinner. Boy was I wrong! I don't go out to fancy restaurants often, but when I decide to do it I want to do it right. I don't mind spending the money when I know it is going to be worth it. Joe's was NOT worth it. We were seated right away but then had to wait a very long time to order. We had to ask 3 times for bread, the food was not as described, the portions were tiny and above all, it wasn't good. Everything was BLAND. There's nothing like paying $30 for a tiny entre that doesn't taste good. I am not a great cook at all and I am better than Joe's"

"Joe's has certainly earned his Michelin stars. He's always at the top of his game, trying new things to mix it up with elements from local farmers market. Joe is in the kitchen and often exceeds his excellent performances yet again with wonderful tastes. Service is great and very professional staff.

This place is a one-of-a-kind food institution in the area and even more of a bargain at lunch. I know of no other restaurant in town to match this one for consistency and great dishes. The best evidence is that other restaurants have opened in the surrounding after Joe's arrival."

"I've been going to Joe's since it opened around 20 years ago. Many of the serving staff and wait staff have been there a long, long time and a visit there usually yields a consistently good dining experience. Unfortunately that was not the case this last visit. Service (from the kitchen) was slow. The food only so/so. I, as well as a couple of unrelated diners around our table, sent food back.

On the plus side the server was congenial, the reservation was honored on time and the energy in the place was good."

"I am finding it difficult to assess Joe's. While I thought my beef cheeks were irresistibly tender and my mushroom ravioli was delicate and airy, my dining compatriots were simply underwhelmed. The pork tenderloin, a signature dish, was dry and could have used a heavier hand with the seasoning. Both of my companions who ordered fish, one a bass and the other a trout, had similar complaints. For a Michelin restaurant, I had set higher standards for the food. On the upside, the price points for both wine and food are in a manageable range, and the service was impeccable, which makes me willing to give it another shot."

"Ladies dinner out was a complete success, we dined during Dine LA week and the pre set menu was incredible. Each course was an epicurean delight. The black cod with oxtail was amazing. In fact our entire meal was orchestrated with oh's and ah's over the quality of the meal.
Our server was attentive but far from over bearing and patient with our questions. Our every need was met during the meal.
We would all go back in a heartbeat and bring our spouses"

"What a surprise! Joe's is a small place in a historic sort of strip mall in Venice, but don't be put off. This is a don't miss restaurant. We went for lunch during DineLA and had a choice of any appetizer, entree and desert from the menu plus a glass of wine for $22. Our meal was easily worth twice that or more. The food was very well prepared, the service was wonderful and the atmosphere was comfortable but stylish. All of our selections were tasty, presented skillfully, and included wonderful ingredients. We will certainly go back to Joe's when we return to LA."

"Had reservations at lunchtime, still had to wait 20 minutes. Showed Up for the Dine LA lunch, was informed that on Sunday they don't do "Lunch" just "brunch" (this would have been helpful to know) so the Dine LA thing went out the window at that point. Our server was pushy, informed us they were out of many items. When the food arrived the portions were very small, good, but small, don't show up if you are extremely hungry! Our server never came back to the table, I think her shift ended. After waiting for 35 min after we were done eating we had to flag down another server to get our bill. We all left hungry and disappointed. I expected a lot more from Joe's, this will most likely be my last visit"

"The food was excellent! It was also extremely nice of the assistant manager to call the day before and offer complimentary mimosas because the dine LA menu was not available. The only blot was our server who was both mean and belligerent. (This does not speak for the bartender, busboy, or hostess, who were all courtesy.) They made our experience very nice, I will definitely come again, but simply request another server if she waits on us again."

"This is the third year in a row that we've gone to Joe's for my birthday dinner and it has yet to disappoint. The elegant yet not overly pretentious ambiance and service is always a pleasure. We had the citrus tasting menu, which was, well, particularly tasty. The scallop crudo in pink orange blossom sauce with blood oranges was the highlight of the meal for me. It was amazingly delicate and flavorful."

"Hadn't been to Joe's in a number of years, and decided to take out of town friends to dinner there. Arrived for a 7:15 reservation on a recent Friday evening, and were immediately seated; always impressed by restaurants that honor reservations as something concrete and don't keep you cooling your heels at the bar.

Drink orders, followed by food orders, were taken. Our waiter returned just before drinks arrived, to apologize about the food orders going in a bit late, and so was he was bringing us, gratis, a charcuterie plate to go with our drinks. Completely unnecessary, but much appreciated.

Joe Miller understands what it takes to make his customers feel special - Wonderful, well executed food, served by a caring, professional staff"

"A very enjoyable experience. We arrived early for our reservation, but we were seated promptly. The host, waiter, and Joe himself all tended to us. The open kitchen is nice to see, but dinner was still quiet and intimate where you could maintain a conversation. "Brunch at Joe's has been amazing for many years, both for the quality of the food and for the price. I was surprised, this past Sunday, when I ate there and the prices had been increased by 15-20% or so (in a recession!) and the quantity of the portions (the fruit salad starter and the side with my salmon) was definitely smaller. The service and ambience were still terrific, but I hope that these changes don't portend a longer-term trend of less value."

"We always enjoy the interesting and varied menus including the set combinations. The food is delicious, perfectly and creatively prepared and served, different without being precious. (Once in awhile, the creativity might go a bit over the top, but only in the exceptional case, and even then, it would be just one item on an otherwise fabulous menu. We appreciate the whimsy and bold choices.) The vibes are compatible: hip but not self-consciously so. Everybody's welcome, everybody is there because they enjoy great and creative food. You'll see parties, families, and single individuals dining there, all treated with superb courtesy."

"I've eaten at Joe's many times over the years but the past two times are now my last, the food has gone downhill IMO. Last night, New Years, our main courses were unedible. The waiter was awful, left out a course and one of the wine pairings and LEFT before dinner was finished supposedly because his girlfriend was mad at him. Too many good restaurants in Venice and SM to keep repeating a bad meal. Food has deteriorated badly, as has our servers"

"Joe's is a lively restaurant that appears to be a neighbourhood hot spot. While the food for the most part was well executed, the service seemed inattentive which marred our experience.

Really liked the option to choose smaller plates of the entrees. This allowed us to sample multiple items off the menu. The crispy black cod served with braised oxtail and dashi broth is fantastic. Also highly recommend the mushroom ravioli, frog legs, and the bouillabaisse. Desserts need some work on flavours and textures. Both desserts that we had (chestnut crepe and apple tartin) were disappointing given how well the appetizers and mains were executed.

Food is good enough that I would return to see if service was just off on our visit."

"I had gone to Joe's a number of times for lunch, and while it was a bit pricey and slightly stuffy, I still enjoyed the environment. I recently decided to take my girlfriend there for dinner. I was very disappointed about the service. I've been to high end places where they allow time between courses for conversation, not interested in rushing you, but this was a little over the top. We waited nearly 45 minutes between appetizer and main course, and another 25 minutes after our dishes were cleared from main course to dessert. When my girlfriend's plate arrived, it was amazingly hot, as if it had sat under the warmer for a very long time, and the server didn't even warn her, as is customary. Not a good experience at all."

"The portions were VERY small. The fish with potato scales looked big because of all the potato scales on the top, but underneath, the fish was about 1/3 the size of the potato topping. Desserts were not as good as I remembered them being in the past. Waiter was good but it took one hour to get our entrees which was odd. "The food was excellent. But each dish was served right on top of the other. We felt rushed and kind-of fatigued by the time we left. We felt we had been forced to consume our food too quickly, probably so the table would be available more quickly. "This is my all time favorite restaurant where I have gone to celebrate everything from birthdays to my Mom's divorce to all sort of other occasions. The food is always reliably delicious. You leave feeling pampered. The service is wonderful... and thoughtful. This past week I brought a friend to Joe's to celebrate her birthday. All I said to the Maitre' d, when he asked where we would like to sit, let's let the Birthday Girl decide. He took that little subtle clue and when they brought out her dessert, it had Happy Birthday written on the plate in chocolate and a lovely little candle sat in a strawberry. Joe's is very thoughtful and very attentive to detail in addition to being a foodies delight."

"A return customer of Joe's because the food is always wonderful and the wait staff highly professional. I love their brunch on Sundays because it's not the usual buffet. "Joe's Restaurant has always been one of my favorite restaurants and one that I consider to be "for the Locals." I have always felt welcome, never an attitude, the waitstaff always knows about every component of the meal and the food has always been outstanding AND at a very reasonable price.

Last Saturday, I chose Joe's for our 11th year anniversary and was so impressed that we continue to praise our meal. It was such a wonderful experience and we were made to feel special from the moment we came in. The tasting menu was excellent, portions plentiful (in some restaurants the portions are so small - Im hungry afterward) and the wine pairing was thoughtful.

Joe's doesn't rely on history - they keep reinventing it for us!"
