Four Square is located in the Bartlett Mangum House, a restored 1908 Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside, massive Doric columns flank the entrance. A wraparound porch, second floor balcony, and slate roof capped by iron scrollwork complete the picture. Inside, the intimate dining rooms each have their original coal burning fireplaces with tiled, carved wood and mirrored mantelpieces. Leaded and stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork can be found throughout.
Our menu changes bi-monthly to reflect our commitment to bringing diners the freshest and most seasonal products available. We rely on local famers and purveyors to bring us the region’s best, from vegetables and grains to seafood and meats. We have a passion for food at Four Square, and we hope you sense it when you dine with us.
"we chose to sit outside and although the day was warm, we were really comfortable. had a nice cozy feel and felt like we were on vacation although we live only 15 min. away. server was friendly, efficient, knowledgably, and unpretentious. the food. so great. fabulous execution from cocktail to dessert. I had gnocci that will make it incredibly difficult for any future experiences to live up. portions are on the small side but for the happy in your mouth, you won't be annoyed. a bit expensive for frequent dinners out (for us at least), but we will be making stops in for drinks/apps/desserts:)."

"It had been a couple of years since we had visited Four Square and after the meal I remembered why. The attitude is top end with an attentive staff but the food was very ordinary and extraordinary prices. I had a steak that was served with potato wedged and a vegetable I can't even remember. The steak was ordered at med. rare and was delivered medium. The cut was not good and could have had a better steak from the local grocery store on my grill. The sauce was OK but not enough to overcome a very average cut of meat. It didn't help that the server spilled half the sauce of my plate onto the table setting down the plate."

"Been to Four Square several times and it's my favorite in Durham. The menu is constantly changing and the food always is excellent. I've had food I normally would not eat, but loved it at Four Square."

"We went to Four Square for Triangle Restaurant Week, although we had previously dined there in past years. We love the historic ambience in the period building. Although the fixed price menu was creative, we were somewhat disappointed that the quail was a little dry. We had not visited Four Square for some time because in their price range and a little below, there are now some other excellent restaurants in the Durham-Chapel Hill area which seem to offer better value. I would like to see Four Square become more competitive, which can be difficult in this region which is so rich in fine restaurants."

"We were given a gift card and had looked forward to a meal at Four Square. While the service was good, we were quite disappointed in the quality of the food for the prices they charge. We won't be going back."

"My family and I enjoyed another outstanding meal at Four Square while the kids were home from college. It is certainly a splurge but well worth it. Red curry ice cream was excellent. Great service."

"This year's pairing included 2 of the 5 "mother sauces" (I looked it up) plus some new to me foods. Love the service here. Every one is knowledgeable and enjoys sharing about the food but not too hovery. Lemon tart was especially inventive. I love this old home environment."

"Flour of us enjoyed a perfect meal. Each offering was the best of its kind I've ever had. It was pricey but a great place to go for a special occasion. If you eliminate the alcohol, I'm sure it is more reasonable, but who wants to do that."

"We had a delightful dinner for a special occasion. Portions were the right size (nothing left for a doggie bag). The antelope with gnocchi was amazing & its presentation outstanding. Also recommend the calamari appetizer and crab-corn chowder -- lighter than expected and very tasty. A lovely evening."

"Really put out by our dinner at Four Square. Chose it assuming the food would be good, room pleasant and quiet, would give a chance to visit a while with a visiting adult son. Instead, we were pushed through a 3 course dinner at indecent speed, every plate removed almost the minute it appeared finished; my husband asked if he wanted another glass of wine before the first one was near finished; next courses delivered at record speed and, worse of all, presented with the check before we asked for it, without even a quick inquiry whether we wanted anything else. Some of the food was good, some ordinary, my salad was overdressed. Servers were nice. I assume they were under orders. Something wrong with us? Large bill, both in money & self esteem"

"Four Square is our place for Christmas Eve, and on Thursday was the place we chose for our anniversary. We love it there for a variety of reasons, the food foremost. But we were somewhat disappointed this time. My steak was large but tough and without taste. Everything else was fine as usual. One slip up in many years is the worst I can say. It has long been our favorite place to eat on special occasions."

"A truly fantastic experience. My wife and I went to Four Square for our 15th wedding anniversary and the owner, Elizabeth, added some personal touches to make this a special occasion. The pan seared antelope was absolutely delicious and my wife's chicken fried tuna was some of the best tuna we ever had. We topped it off with some of the best Creme Brulee we've had."

"I don't know why Four Square is rated so high. Very limited menu. Slow service. The blank walls of the room we were served made the noise level from others diners extremely loud."

"I guess that when a lot of other reviews mention that a restaurant can be very loud and that they almost always are missing one or two items from the menu that's what you should expect. Four Square delivers on these, but it also has tasty well executed food. The fried broccoli appetizer was excellent.
Both of Four Square's faults could be easily rectified.. The harshness of the acoustics could be softened with a few textiles and the seeming menu snafus could be avoided by printing paper menu on a daily basis instead of once a month.
If the noise Problem were eliminated I would certainly recommend Four Square to a friend, but as it is now the social element of a quite pricy dinning experience is significantly disabled."

"My husband and I were being taken out to" any place we wanted" by my husband's business associate. We had heard great things about Four Square and were not disappointed. My husband's associate is a foodie and travels and has been to many, many great restaurants. I quote him "I think this is the best pork chop I have ever eaten". All four of us enjoyed both courses and a great buttermilk cheesecake to top it all off. By the way I had the snapper (yum) and wanted the sides (mashed white sweet potato and broccoli slaw) that went with another entree. No problem with the substitutions . How refreshing. The service from the minute we walked in, until we left was outstanding. Great wine as well. Thanks for a wonderful meal and night out."

"The food was great, but service was lacking - probably the least attentive server I have ever had.. The server did not introduce herself. No one ever asked if our entrees were OK. Server only checked back in with us to take dessert orders."

"I took my wife here for her birthday. The atmosphere was elegant and the service was excellent. The food was delicious. We both enjoyed our selections. The only complaint was that the noise level was a little too energetic at times for a business casual setting style of restaurant. It was sometimes difficult to communicate across the table without speaking so loud that other tables could listen in our intimate celebration."

"My wife and I dined at Four Square for her birthday. I'd asked for a quiet, romantic corner and we were very pleased with our seating. Our server, Christina, was helpful, friendly, fun and attentive. I can't think of a thing I could ask her to improve upon. We both enjoyed our food and wine very much. We will certainly visit Four Square again."

"Four Square is an extraordinarily good restaurant, one of the very best in the Triangle. The food is innovative and perfectly prepared. The service is flawless. The wine list is excellent. They, also, add some classy touches such as actually "splitting" the dish in the kitchen instead of just bringing another plate. They change out the silverware for each course instead of expecting you to eat the entire meal with one fork and knife. It is an all around around great experience."

"Living in Burlington, we are so happy that FourSquare was recommended to us by several friends as a place they thought that we would enjoy. We celebrated our daughter's 35th birthday. From the bartender to our server, it was a great experience. The food was delicious and we've found a new "favorite place"!"

"This was the first visit for my husband & I but will definitely not be the last.
We found the setting in a 1908 Victorian home to be both intimate and charming. The service was friendly and knowledgable, if not quite as attentive as we might have hoped.
All of our food selections were delicious, especially the grilled scallops which were creatively paired with spaghetti squash, apple-fennel purée & a hazelnut brown butter sauce with cocoa-nibs adding a surprising and tasty crunch.
We plan to return later in the spring/summer to enjoy a cocktail in the cozy bar area, then dine on the screened porch while enjoying the crepe myrtles & other mature landscaping on the property.
All in all, this is a neighborhood gem worth check"

"To be honest, the bread was marginal. It was cold and without flavor. The lamb was pulled and mushy - over cooked. The Amberjack fish was great with the fried kale. The boar sausage was mushy but tasty. Filet mignon was average. Portions seemed right - left room for desert.
Flavors were very good but the textures of some items we did not like at all. Coffee was very good quality and we enjoyed that the most. We spent $140 with tip.
Waitstaff is excellent. Place was clean and welcoming."

"We were able to get a Saturday night reservation thru OpenTable at the only time they had showing - 5:30pm. We were the only customers in the restaurant for about 45 minutes. The food was lovely - we both had the mussels appetizer, which was delicious, just be aware that the broth has a bit of a kick. I had the duck for my entree, which was wonderful; my husband had the scallops, also delightful.
We both had desserts, which I would skip next time around.
Service was great, though when the restaurant filled, our server got busy. Guess we were spoiled by all that attention earlier!
We will definitely go back again!"

"I was there with my wife for the fixed price Valentines Dinner. This was our 1st time here and the place is very nice with very good service. My 1st course was oysters with tapioka pearls and they were so so and there were only 2 and my main course was duck 2 ways and was very good and a nice portion. My wife had pork dumplings for her first course and venison as a main course and both were very good. The service was good but not great."
