Sasa
Sasa is a new Japanese inspired restaurant in Walnut Creek. Izakaya Restaurants are traditional small plate restaurants where friends go to have a drink and unwind after a long day. Situated in the historic 100 year old building that for many years housed the Walnut Creek Meat Market, this architectural jewel has been transformed by BH Development and Best Santos Studios. Chef Philip Yang (proprietor & owner of Blue Gingko, Lafayette) prepares Japanese influenced dishes from around the world. The staff welcomes you into their house and offers up comfort, hospitality and fun. The restaurant includes a full bar with a large Sake selection, outdoor patio, sushi bar and a commitment to fresh local seasonal faire.

"The food is what keeps us coming back. The service is a bit to be desired. Our waitress seemed put out most of the time. However the ahi parfait, Sasa roll, tempura lettuce wraps, and ginger meatballs are yummy! The riblets are usually good but they were a bit chewy this time. Love the small plates and ambiance. Just wish wait staff realized that your tip is based on SERVICE! She forgot my daughter's lemonade, defensive when I asked the status of our order and disappeared when we were wanting to order dessert. The restaurant was pretty empty which I worries me. Please go for the food and be patient regarding the servers."

"I saw this restaurant on open table and was expecting an overall better experience. Service was mixed. In the beginning, waiter took a long time before taking the order. Then when the food started to come out, it seemed too fast and the clean up felt a little rushed. Sushi seemed to be way over priced so I decided to try mostly the other small plates. Steak was too chewy and the cod was too salty. I also thought too many dishes had something fried in them which I didn't like. Generally, food was decent but not good enough for what I had to pay. I think this restaurant is a good place to go out with friends for a night out but not really to enjoy good food."

"This is the 2nd time I've been there. The first time was in the evening and we were seated in the middle section in the front right in front of the bar It was crowded and very noisy, but the food was great. The second time we were there for lunch and seated in the back room which was not crowded and much quieter so you could hear each other talk. The food was good both times. I would recommend it for the food but request the back room if you don't want to shout at your dinner companions while you eat it."

"Sasa is a modern, upscale restaurant with innovative takes on sushi and Japanese food. The traditional sashimi and sushi roll offerings are excellent, but so are the various appetizers and small plates such as ginger chicken meatballs and crispy artichoke karaage. Service was efficient and knowledgeable, and the vibe is trendy but not haughty. The bill can be pricey, but the food and dining experience is worth the added cost."

"The service at the Grange was just impeccable. The wait staff knew when and when not to approach the table, they were helpful with the menu selection, and they ensured we understood what we were ordering so we would not be surprised when it arrived at our table. The food is very "Farm to Table" oriented and was presented very attractively. Along with that, all three diners thought the food was excellent. The atmosphere was a bit loud and took time to get used to. I would definitely return."

"One of my favorite places. Love the decor. Service is very good. Unfortunately, the chairs in the main dining area are not designed to fit with the table height. We had to move our seats because it was so uncomfortable. Such a shame that a restaurant that is so well designed overlooked patrons comfort. It's an easy fix, and I hope they will consider it."

"We went there when they first opened and again shortly thereafter and thought it was fabulous. The last two times we went there more recently, the food quality had noticeably deteriorated each time -- to the point where on our most recent visit, we inquired whether the ownership or chef had changed (we were told neither had). Our server was very good, but unfortunately, he was serving up food that was mediocre at best. Also, when we asked for coffee at the end of our meal, we were told they don't serve coffee -- which at first we thought was said in jest, but our server told us he was serious -- they don't serve coffee because "the staff was drinking it all." Weird. What kind of restaurant doesn't serve coffee?"

"Hubby took me to Sasa for a belated birthday dinner. I had always wanted to try it as I had heard good things about the restaurant. It was truly a wonderful dining experience! The staff was very attentive, helpful, and friendly. The ambiance fantastic and the food exceptional!! The ahi parfait is a must, I highly recommend it! The squash dumplings were also delectable! The sushi was phenomenal with the fresh wasabi! I would highly recommend this restaurant for special event dining!"

"Excellent food, as always. The specials are worth checking out; I am never disappointed and sometimes wowed. Service was a little slower than usual this time. "Good service. Food is amazing. Some of the rolls are really good(sushi has gotten better since it opened). Appetizers great. Mostly all small plates. I'm not a big meat eater but had several dishes with beef and it was incredible. You will pay the price for how good it tastes, but for a once in a while visit it is worth the dollars. We didn't like one roll(it was just bland), wish they would have "comped" something else given we spent over $160 for two people(we kindly expressed our dislike to our server early into the tasting and she just as politely agreed with us but didn't do anything or offer anything). That was the only disappointment. A little noisy but to be expected for a Saturday night and close table placement."

"Besides excellent sushi, creative (and excellent) bar drinks, the two meat dishes we had were way above the norm. There is a sense that there a REAL CHEF running the show. Haven't brought our kids but the family behind us did and it seemed very kid friendly. There were business people on the other side. I will be returning here regularly, even in Walnut Creek which has a lot of good restaurants, this one stands out."

"This was our first time at SASA. It was recommended to us and I wish they would have never mentioned it. The few appetizers/small plates we ordered were ok and the two sushi rolls were horrible. I ordered the SASA roll hoping that it was the best one on their menu considering the name. Our server suggested it was one of their best rolls aIso. I can't imagine, if that was their best, what the other rolls tasted like because these were bland and boring!! It was pretty over priced which we knew would be the case but once again we expected it to be amazing for a $100 dinner for two without any alcohol. We'll probably never go again, most of the time I would say "glad I went, but not my kind of restaurant" not this time I regret it."

"Food was good, but a little more explanation from wait staff would have been nice. (I ordered my steak med-rare, and and was about right...except is was served on a steaming hot rock, which was interesting presentation, but it continued cooking my steak to well done) I thought he should have either told me to order rare and wait a minute or to take it off the rock) Sauce it was served with was bland.
The biggest problem was the sushi. 3 of us ordered non-sushi and 1 ordered sushi. The 3 of us had apps, got and finished our dinner (a whole steak in my case), were asked about dessert....before the sushi arrive. Literally, 2 of the people we were with paid and left before the sushi arrive. And it was a slow (empty) Monday."

"My wife and I took my daughter here for her college graduation dinner. Sasa printed up a special menu for her with her name and a "Happy Graduation" message. Nice touch!! We are all Japanese food lovers, and I have to admit that the sushi and sashimi were top notch. I could tell that the fish was fresh--even on a Sunday! We had a nice booth in the front, and it was just the right level of light and noise. The TV's over the bar are a bit distracting, but I'm sure the bar patrons demand entertainment. Would definitely go back again--this was our second time at Sasa in less than a year. Great place for special occasions."

"Sushi was fabulous at Sasa. Desert menu is not quite as creative. We had the Omakase platter, a chef's variety of sushi, sashimi and roll...it was outstanding. Expensive for your normal sushi, but well worth it. Top quality."

"Loved the food and so much to choose from on the menu. The only part was we had about 5 different people serving us so not just one waiter. It got slow in the middle/end of our meal and we had to keep looking for a waiter to get a dessert menu. However, the food was so good that we would go back."

"Service was poor at best. We always had to ask for everything we needed. Never offered clean plates or second cocktails, we had to ask. The food made up for it. I would go back again to see if it was just our waitress on a bad night."

"First time at Sasa and nothing less than amazing!! The food, the atmosphere and our service were top notch! It was a beautiful day so we sat on the patio which is right next to their parking lot but you couldm't even tell. They have plastic draped which serve as windows and a fountain that quietly babbled. The waiter came by at the right times, had some great recommendations, and let us dine leisurly. I will be back and recommending to friends!!"
